Welcome to National Pie Day!

National Pie Day is a "day to maintain America's pie heritage, pass on the tradition of pie making and promote America's love affair with pie." It is a day to bake and eat pies, try new recipes, and give pies to others. Charlie Papazian, who later went on to found the Great American Beer Festival, started the day in 1975 in his classroom, while teaching in Boulder, Colorado. He chose his birthday, January 23, as the day of celebration. In 1986, the American Pie Council began sponsoring the day, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Crisco. National Pie Day is also celebrated on December 1, but it is unknown why this date was also chosen or who chose it.

Syracuse Football is Staying Active in Recruiting – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

Even though the college football season is over, recruiting is still in full swing. With National Signing Day just a couple weeks away, Dino Babers and his staff have been busy. On Saturday Babers was in the Dome hyping up the crowd at the Pitt SU basketball game during halftime. The next day he went down to Georgia to visit three-star defensive end recruit Steven Linton.

Besides Syracuse, Linton’s offer list includes Arizona State, Louisville, and UCF and at 6-foot-4, he has the length to play in the ACC. But, the kid needs to eat a few hamburgers. 247 Sports has him at just 195 pounds. Syracuse defensive end Alton Robinson is 50 pounds heavier than Linton, and he’s considered light for a D-lineman.

SU coaches also took a visit to see three-star running back Michel Dukes on Thursday. After a senior season where he racked up over 2,000 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns, teams have become more interested in Dukes. One of those squads is the in-state Clemson Tigers who gave him an offer on Monday. While there’s obvious appeal to staying home and playing for the reigning national champions, the Orange have a longer relationship with Dukes. SU offered the running back in September and he visited campus in early December.

ACC Football Rx: Optimism for VT, UM and FSU in 2019 (RX; HM)

In 2018, three ACC football-first teams were very disappointing: Virginia Tech, Miami and Florida State. Athlon Sports gives reasons to optimistic about all three in 2019. These are just some samples of what they wrote...

Virginia Tech Football: 3 Reasons for Optimism About the Hokies in 2019
Oftentimes, year three in a coach’s tenure is when a team makes an ascension... but... Justin Fuente’s third group of Hokies suffered unexpected personnel losses both before and during the season, and coupled with those that they knew would move on following the 2017 season, Tech regressed to 6-7...

Despite this year’s problems, there are reasons for hope going forward. Here are [excerpts from] three of them with an eye towards Virginia Tech's 2019 outlook.

1. The passing game
Ryan Willis [and Josh Jackson] will return [at QB, along with]... plenty of capable receivers to target. The top five pass catchers will be back, including top target Damon Hazelton and Tre Turner... An offensive line that started three freshmen in the Military Bowl should make strides...

2. Defensive improvement
[Except for] tackle Ricky Walker... everyone else on the defensive side of the ball returns... the defense was exceptionally young, as eight of the 11 starters in the Military Bowl were either freshmen or sophomores... it stands to reason that the Hokies will be much better...

3. Schedule sets up nicely
The Hokies play at Notre Dame on Nov. 2, but assuming they can get by Old Dominion this time around, the rest of the non-conference schedule is easy... No one in the Coastal brings back more starters than Virginia Tech.

ACC Football Rx: Ten Best Unsigned 2 Recruits (RX; HM)

College football recruiting: Top uncommitted prospects ahead of National Signing Day
Taking a look at 10 of the best players available and where they might be heading in February

Five-star DT Ishmael Sopsher (Amite High School, Amite, LA)
... 6-foot-3, 334-pounder ...desire to play with his older brother Rodney. LSU and Oregon are the only that have extended offers to this point.

Five-star OT Darnell Wright (Huntington High School, Huntington, WV)
... [Tennessee] priority No. 1... has reserved the last weekend before signing day for a visit with the Vols... the No. 2 offensive tackle in the country, will have all of the other national powers chasing.

Four-star LB Henry To'oto'o (De La Salle, Concord, CA)
A physical, hard-nosed linebacker... has official visits scheduled for Tennessee, Oregon and Alabama... has already taken official visits to Washington and Utah.

Four-star RB Jerrion Ealy (Jackson Prep, Flowood, MS)
A longtime Ole Miss commit... official visit to Clemson... Tigers have since emerged as the clear favorite... may be the best running back in the country but... real possibility he never plays college football... expected to be an early round pick this spring for the MLB Draft.

Four star-DB Kaiir Elam (The Benjamin School, North Palm Beach, FL)
...Kaiir is a prime target for Florida... It appears to be a Georgia-Florida battle... could find his way back to Miami for a second official visit due to a new NCAA rule that allows an additional official visit in the event of a coaching change.

Four-star ATH Mark Antony-Richards (Wellington High School, West Palm Beach, FL)
An athlete that projects to running back... courted by Penn State, Florida and Auburn... younger brother of injured Hurricane wide receiver Ahmmon Richards and that Miami tie lingers... Auburn and Florida appear to be trending for the 6-1, 200-pounder but it was Diaz that was in his home on Wednesday night.

ACC Football Rx: SI's Best Game Each Week for 2019 (RX; HM)

According to SI, these are The Best Games Every Week of the 2019 College Football Season Has to Offer (Top game plus ACC/ND honorable mentions shown here; click the link to see the rest):

WEEK 1: HOUSTON at OKLAHOMA
Honorable mentions: Florida vs. Miami — It’s a shame this is in Orlando instead of at one of these in-state rivals’ home stadiums. Boise State vs. Florida State — Willie Taggart's seat could get very warm if FSU blows another season opener, this one to an always-tricky Boise State in Jacksonville. Duke vs. Alabama

WEEK 2: LSU at TEXAS
Honorable mentions: Texas A&M at Clemson — Last year’s game in College Station went down to the wire, and Jimbo Fisher’s second Texas A&M team should be even better.

WEEK 3: CLEMSON at SYRACUSE
In the past two years, Syracuse has been the conference opponent that has given Clemson the most trouble. Last year, Clemson lost Trevor Lawrence early in the game and needed a clutch fourth-down conversion to keep the game-winning drive alive. In 2017, the last time Clemson went to the Carrier Dome, the Tigers lost a different starting quarterback and fell 27–24 to the Orange. Syracuse had a breakout season in ’18, winning 10 games and ending the year ranked in the top 15, and eight defensive starters are set to return. While the Orange will miss QB Eric Dungey, backup Tommy DeVito should be ready to take over.

WEEK 4: NOTRE DAME at GEORGIA
Praise both sides for agreeing to an on-campus home-and-home, the first half of which ended in a thriller two years ago. This stands to be the biggest non-conference game of the season and one of the most important games of the season’s first month. Georgia gets a chance to make an early College Football Playoff statement, as it did when it edged Notre Dame in 2017; the Irish get a chance to avenge Georgia’s 20–19 victory in South Bend and chart their own playoff return. The atmosphere in Athens should be electric, and both teams’ 2018 starting quarterbacks, Ian Book for Notre Dame and Jake Fromm for Georgia, will be back.

Honorable mentions: Appalachian State at North Carolina — The Tar Heels open a tricky September with South Carolina, Miami and Wake Forest and then take on an App State team that lost head coach Scott Satterfield but should retain its knack for scaring Power 5 teams.

WEEK 5: OHIO STATE at NEBRASKA
Honorable mentions: Virginia at Notre Dame — The Cavaliers had a banner year in 2018, and this is a big opportunity to add to that momentum with a signature upset.

WEEK 6: AUBURN at FLORIDA

WEEK 7: OKLAHOMA vs. TEXAS
Honorable mentions: Syracuse at NC State — Two ACC also-rans that exceeded expectations in 2018 square off in primetime on a Thursday night.

Shilo Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, picks South Carolina over Colorado State (coloradoan.com; Lytle)

Well, CSU fans will always have the fun of the Instagram post to look back on.

Rams fans were abuzz in December when Shilo Sanders, son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, took an official visit to Colorado State University.

On the visit, Deion was active on Twitter and Instagram posting pictures and praise for CSU and coach Mike Bobo.

Alas, it wasn’t enough for the Rams to land the three-star cornerback, as Shilo announced his commitment to South Carolina on Tuesday night on social media.

Shilo Sanders

@ShiloSanders

He had 15 reported offers, according to 247Sports, including eight from Power 5 schools. The reported Power 5 offers in addition to South Carolina were Florida State (his dad’s school), Georgia, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, Syracuse and Tennessee.

His two official visits were to CSU and South Carolina.

Clemson's 2019 football schedule should provide some early challenges (independentmail.com; Keepfer)

As the defending national champion, Clemson is likely to be favored in each of its games on the 2019 football schedule, which was released last week by the Atlantic Coast Conference office.

But truth be told, despite a 55-4 record during the past four seasons and four consecutive ACC titles, coach Dabo Swinney’s team seems to have at least one game each season that causes Clemson fans to squirm.

Last year, it took heroic efforts from Travis Etienne and backup quarterback Chase Brice to save a 27-23 victory against Syracuse and a last-minute to interception to seal a two-point win at Texas A&M.

In 2017, the Tigers actually lost to Syracuse 27-24.

In 2016, Clemson survived in overtime against N.C. State and lost to Pittsburgh.

In 2015, the Tigers had a two-point win against Notre Dame and a three-point victory against Louisville.

The 2019 challenges will begin Aug. 29 when the Tigers host Georgia Tech in what will be the earliest season opener in program history and the debut game on the new ACC Network.

The game against the Yellow Jackets – a team that Clemson has defeated five consecutive times at Memorial Stadium – will kick off a key three-game stretch to open the season.

Game 2 will be the second game of a home-and-home series against Texas A&M, which finished 9-4 in 2018 in its first season under former Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. The 2019 game will mark the 10th consecutive year that Swinney’s and Fisher’s teams have played.

The Aggies finished ranked No. 16 in the final major polls after defeating N.C. State, 52-13, in the Gator Bowl.

The Saturday after the Texas A&M game the Tigers will travel to Syracuse to face the Orange in the Carrier Dome – the site of Clemson’s last league and regular-season defeat.

Boston College and Kansas meet for the first time in series history. All-time, the Eagles are 22-28-1 against current Big 12 members. The majority of those games, 33, were against West Virginia when the two schools met both in non-conference matchups and as members of the Big East.

Army vet opens Latin American take-out restaurant in Syracuse (PS; Weaver)

This is what Regina Montalvo wants you to know about her family’s new take-out place, G’s Cocina:

The empanadas, chicken stew, rice and beans and tostones are the same as the ones she serves her growing kids.

“I want people to taste a home-cooked meal,” Montalvo said of the new restaurant on Burnet Avenue. “I want people to be able to eat at a reasonable price.”

Montalvo is the G in the restaurant’s name: Some friends and family call her G, short for Gina. G’s Cocina is still making some of the baked goods once sold by Liberty, including the half-moon cookies. But she and her family have added a selection of Latin American foods to the menu.

RE: ACC Football Rx: 2019 ACC Schedule: TV Guesses - 1/18/19 (RX; HM)

My TV predictions for Syracuse home games:
Clemson - ABC
W Mich. - ACCN
Holy Cross - ACCN
Pitt - ACCN
BC - ESPN or ACCN (TBD)
Wake Forest - ACCN

So lots of ACC Network...
It will be interesting to see what ESPN does with the weekday night ACC games. I think they have no choice but to show most of them on ESPN or ESPN2. What are they going to show instead? I thought the ACC Network would pick up a couple early in the year but I think they need 9 to fill slots for ESPN and ESPN2.

So I think Pitt is going to be ESPN and I think BC will definitely be ESPN. That should be a pretty important game for the conference, just like in 2018, when it was also on ESPN.

Hopefully most of these Saturday games will be 3:30 pm or 7:0 pm starts. I think we will find that the ACC will typically only have 1 or 2 games at noon on Saturdays. One always on ACCN, and sometimes another on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU. That to me is a nice benefit of bring the ACCN on line.
