Welcome to National Eskimo Pie Patent Day!

Today celebrates the anniversary of the patent of the Eskimo Pie, which is seen as being America's first chocolate-covered ice cream bar. In 1920, a boy had come into Christian Kent Nelson's sweets and candy shop. He ordered ice cream, but then changed his mind and asked for chocolate instead. Nelson asked him why he didn't order both, and the boy said it was because he couldn't afford to—he only had a nickel. Nelson worked to find a way to melt chocolate onto ice cream in such as way so that it would adhere to it, and he found that using melted cocoa butter worked the best. He called his bars "I-Scream Bars," and after they were a hit at the village fireman's picnic, he started searching for companies to manufacture them. He partnered with Russell C. Stover, and they made an agreement where they would split the profits. At Stover's insistence, the name of the ice cream treat was changed to "Eskimo Pie"—a name that evoked the cold north, and the indigenous people that lived there; some today see the name as being culturally insensitive.

Top non-conference battles of the 2018 MAC football season (hustlebelt.com; Helwick)

In the MAC, the college football season arises with a non-conference slate and winds down with a series of bowl games against foes from other leagues. Excluding conference-play sandwiched in the middle, the MAC teams held 54 opportunities to assert themselves and upend opponents from other leagues, ranging from Week 1 kickoffs to late-December bowl games.

The conference finished 19-35 in out-of-conference matchups. While the MAC won all 10 of its FCS games, its teams only fared 9-35 against the rest of the FBS. A non-conference win in the MAC signified a new tradition in 2018 — the hoisting of the MAC Jolly Roger flag, issued by the conference’s commissioner.

Power Five teams fell as victims in three of the MAC’s nine non-conference triumphs. Purdue (Eastern Michigan), Rutgers (Buffalo), and Northwestern (Akron) all suffered home losses in Big Ten country early in the season, making way the Jolly Roger to fly.

Without further ado, here are the top 10 non-conference bouts of 2018 MAC football, ranked by the thrill factor of the contest.

10. Syracuse 55, Western Michigan 42

August 31, 2018 — Waldo Stadium, Kalamazoo, MI

What a way to open the season. One thing we didn’t know at the time was that Syracuse — who hadn’t participated in a bowl since 2013 — was a 10-win program, good for No. 15 in the country at the conclusion of the year.

The first half of this game was a snooze fest. The Broncos entered halftime getting decimated, 34-7, to the typical-ACC bottom feeder.

After Eric Dungey and Co. dominated Western Michigan for 30 minutes, Syracuse opened the second half with a fumble on its first play from scrimmage. The Broncos answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jon Wassink to wideout D’Wayne Eskridge, who finished with a career day with 240 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Eskridge would strike again several drives later, burning the Syracuse secondary on an 84-yard streak route touchdown. A three-and-out passed and Western Michigan’s big-play offense hit yet another grand slam. This time, LeVante Bellamy sprinted past the Orange for a 64-yard score. All of a sudden, Waldo’s scoreboard read 34-28.

Western Michigan forced another defensive stop, but a face mask on 3rd-and-long extended the Syracuse drive, leading to an acrobatic Jamal Custis touchdown catch on the ensuing play. With the offense en fuego, Wassink powered in for six, immediately after hitting Eskridge on a 59-yard bomb.

Unfortunately, the Broncos’ defense never held firm after the face mask penalty and Syracuse continued their offensive domination. An interception prevented Western Michigan from ever completing the comeback or getting the ball down one score, but it was one heck of an offensive showdown.

The teams combined for 1,181 yards and 97 points. Wassink passed for 379, Bellamy ran for 120, Eskridge had 240 receiving. In the winning effort, Dungey picked up 200 on the ground and Custis finished with 168 receiving yards.

With smaller crowds spotted across the nation, Texas drew more football fans in 2018 | Hookem.com (hookem.com; Davis)

During the 2018 football season, Texas sold out three home games and averaged 97,713 fans over its six appearances at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

UT’s attendance numbers at home ranked seventh nationally. In 2017, UT drew an average of 92,778 fans for its six home games. That 5.3 percent increase in the stands can actually be considered an abnormality by the NCAA.

Of the 64 football programs playing in Power 5 conferences, 41 averaged a smaller crowd at home this year than in 2017. Texas was one of 22 schools that saw an increase in average attendance, and only seven of the other programs boasted a bigger boost at the box office. Georgia remained steady with its at-capacity average of 92,746 fans.

Hotter ticket

Texas was one of 22 Power 5 programs that averaged a larger crowd in 2018 than it did in 2017.

BC Football Recruiting: 2019 OL Christian Mahogany Commits To Eagles (bcinterruption.com; Black)

Boston College football got a late commitment yesterday as Paramus Catholic OL Christian Mahogany committed to Steve Addazio and Co.

Christian Mahogany

@CMahogany73

C O M M I T T E D ‍♂️ #WeAreBC #DecideToFly NJ➡️BC

Mahogany, a 3* OL, visited Chestnut Hill this weekend, which must have went well. The 300 plus pounder had a solid list of offers including Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia along with a bevy of MAC schools. He joins Jack Conley and Blerim Rustemi as offensive linemen in the current class. Over the weekend BC also had a visit from a University of Miami offensive lineman who could be coming as well. With most of the line graduating after last season, there will be spots open immediately for underclassmen to fill, so there could be lots of competition going into camp this year.

The later National Signing Day is occuring on February 6th, and BC still might have some more commits heading their way. Make sure to check out BC Interruption for more updates.

No spring football game for Louisville? No big deal (courier-journal.com; Yates)

Scott Satterfield’s first season as the University of Louisville’s head football coach will not include a spring game.

The Cardinals will begin practice on Feb. 11 and wrap up camp on March 7.

Some may see not holding an official “spring game” as a big deal but I can assure it’s not. There are a few reasons.

You never really gain much from a spring game. You get to see the first-team offense score a bunch of points on the second-team defense, so you never get a real gauge of what the offense will do during the regular season.

Spring games are not a “big draw” for some college football teams. Obviously, there are exceptions from your power teams like Alabama and Clemson, but most schools like U of L don’t sell out a spring game. Louisville will still be holding an open practice for the fans and media, including a scrimmage, so people will still get a sneak peek of the new offense and defense.

Louisville football trending for 4 star DE who could help right away (bigredlouie.com; Lane)

Louisville football is looking to close out the recruiting cycle with a bang. Currently they are leading the way in the crystal ball predictions for their highest rated recruit remaining. Can they close the deal?

Scott Satterfield, Cort Dennison, and the entire Louisville football staff have been out on the road busting their butts looking to finish off the 2019 recruiting class with a big bang. With only two and a half weeks remaining until National Signing Day and 11ish spots to fill, there’s no doubt there is plenty of work left to be done.

While the majority of the recruits the Cardinal staff are pursuing are quality 3 star recruits who will be able to play a roll in turning around the Louisville football program, there are none more highly touted at this point than four star defensive end, Ja’Darien Boykin.

Boykin, a 6’2, 235 pound defensive end out of Georgia, currently holds offers from the likes of Miami, Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Arizona State, but it’s Louisville who seems to be trending in the right direction at the right time. Once overlooked, Boykin has begun loading up on offers in the last few weeks and now will have a tough decision to make.

An early look at Clemson’s 2019 football schedule, what to expect (thestate.com; Connolly)

Clemson has won two of the past three national titles, and the Tigers will likely be the favorites to win it all again in 2019 as Trevor Lawrence and plenty of playmakers will be back. Clemson has a couple of early tests, but the schedule sets up nicely for the Tigers to return to the College Football Playoff for a fifth consecutive season. Here’s a look at each game of next year’s regular season:

Georgia Tech, Aug. 29, Clemson

The ACC Network, which is set to launch if August, picked this matchup as its first football game to be played on the network. This should be an opportunity for the ACC’s premier team to get off to a strong start in 2019 and continue to show how far ahead it is as a program from the rest of the league. New head coach Geoff Collins may have success at Georgia Tech eventually, but it’s not going to come in Week 1 of Year 1 on the road breaking in a drastically new offense against defending national champion Clemson.

Texas A&M, Sept. 7, Clemson

One of two teams to play Clemson to within a touchdown in 2018, Texas A&M should give the Tigers a challenge again. Jimbo Fisher is bringing in one of the top recruiting classes in the country in 2019, and the Aggies already have plenty of talent returning. Quarterback Kellen Mond gave the Tigers fits in 2018, and Mond and the Aggies will provide a tough early test for a Clemson defense that must replace seven starters.

Syracuse, Sept. 14, Syracuse, N.Y.

The other team to play Clemson to within a touchdown in 2018, Syracuse is on the rise under Dino Babers. The Orange won 10 games this past season, including a 34-18 win against West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl. Quarterback Eric Dungey is gone, but this will still be one of the toughest challenges on Clemson’s schedule in 2019. Clemson lost at Syracuse in 2017 and had to rally to top the Orange at home in 2018.

Charlotte, Sept. 21, Clemson

After opening the season with three Power 5 programs the Tigers’ schedule gets a bit lighter with a home game against a Charlotte team that finished 5-7 a year ago.

Clemson Football: Continuity in the coaching staff has been key (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

Having continuity and chemistry in the coaching staff has been a great asset to building the Clemson football program over recent years.

The Clemson football program has climbed the ranks and become No. 1 in the nation.

The Tigers are coming off their second National Championship in the past three years, a fourth-straight berth in the College Football Playoff and a fourth-straight ACC Championship.

That’s special.

Honestly, it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen before in Clemson football. The amount of success that Dabo Swinney has had, especially in the last five years, stems to how he has built the program from the foundation up through the years.

One of the keys to the success is, without a doubt, the continuity in the coaching staff.

It’s just something special…

Former 4-Star WR Marques Ezzard Is Leaving Miami (thespun.com; McCarty)

A former four-star athlete recruit is on the move. Miami announced it has parted ways with wide receiver Marquez Ezzard after he spent just one season with the Hurricanes program.

Head coach Manny Diaz released a statement about the move: “Marquez and I talked, and we decided that it was in his best interesting to pursue opportunities at another school. We wish him all the best in his future plans.”

Ezzard played in three games during his freshman season, which means he can use the new redshirt rule and have four years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career.

DOUGHERTY: Breaking down the 2019 football schedule (cavalierdaily.com; Dougherty)

It has been quite some time since the Virginia football team has entered a season with such high expectations. After many years at the cellar of the ACC Coastal, the Cavaliers should now be a favorite to win their division after an 8-5 2018 season that ended with a 28-0 thumping of South Carolina in the Belk Bowl.

The Cavalier faithful got one of their first tastes of the 2019 season on January 16 when the team’s schedule was released by the ACC. At first glance, the top-heavy schedule is unconventional, but it could give the country a quick sense of what to expect from the Cavaliers with some crucial early matchups.

With the schedule already having some people anxiously awaiting the first kickoff, I will break down some takeaways and expectations from the Cavaliers’ 2019 slate.

The opener carries major weight

It’s rare for a team to start the season against a division rival, but the ACC decided to schedule Virginia at the defending Coastal Division champion Pittsburgh for a showdown right out of the gate. The Cavaliers have not taken down the Panthers since 2014, most recently experiencing a disappointing 23-13 home defeat in a game that had key implications for winning the Coastal.

Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi’s run-heavy style of play seems to always give Virginia fits, and more of the same can be expected next year. With the Panthers pounding the ball, it will be an entertaining game for four-star defensive lineman Jowon Briggs to make his Virginia debut after a lot of hype as the jewel of Coach Bronco Mendenhall’s 2019 recruiting class. The matchup will be a huge tone-setter and could have a major hand in deciding the Coastal.

The Absolute Best Chicken Wings in New York (grubstreet.com; Street)

...
15. Old Town Bar and Restaurant’s Buffalo Wings

45 E. 18th St., nr. Park Ave. S.; 212-529-6732

If you’re going to eat classic Buffalo wings, you ought to put yourself in the hands of some experts — the recipe is so simple that it’s easy to totally phone it in and find yourself gnawing on gristly meat soaked in too much hot sauce and grease. (There’s a reason some bars sell wings for 20 cents a pop, and it’s the same reason you don’t want to eat them.) Old Town doesn’t cut corners, and the wings are straightforward, classic, and satisfying, bearing the optimal mix of butter and hot sauce. —H.G.

16. Dinosaur BBQ’s Jumbo BBQ Wings

Multiple locations

You can do much better for all-around barbecue in New York City than Dinosaur (which hails from Syracuse, of all places), but they really do have great wings, cooked on a hot grill until their fatty skin is perfectly rendered and the meat is tender, then crisped and glazed (in sauces ranging from mild Honey BBQ to extra-spicy Devil’s Duel, with Wango Tango in the middle) directly above the coals. And because they’re not fried, they have less potential to get soggy, making them a realistic game-day takeout option. —H.G.

17. Emily’s Nguyen Hot Wings

919 Fulton St., nr. Waverly Ave., Clinton Hill; 347-844-9588

A pizza place this good has no business making such excellent wings, too (not to mention one of the most-buzzed-about burgers in town) but the Emily crew is unstoppable. These are great, coated in a gochujang-based glaze and grated pecorino, and served with homemade ranch and thin slices of radish. —H.G.
