8 Syracuse football freshmen participating in spring practice (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football returns to the field Sunday to kick off spring ball with an unpadded practice.

It'll be the first look at the eight true freshmen who enrolled ahead of the spring semester.

Will any of the eight be key contributors in the fall?

Syracuse last season leaned on safety Andre Cisco, a January enrollee who went on to become an All-American and tie for the national lead in interceptions.

Two other mid-year enrollees, linebackers Juan Wallace and Lakiem Williams, contributed on special teams.

Of course, more freshmen will join the team ahead of fall camp, and it won't be too late for those players to make a favorable impression on the coaching staff.

Trill Williams, Taj Harris and Jarveon Howard all made an impact throughout SU's 10-3 season in 2018.

Here is a closer look at the eight freshmen who will practice this spring:

WR COURTNEY JACKSON

The Pittsburgh-area native comes to SU from Gateway High School, one of the best programs in Western Pennsylvania.

"You see them doing a lot of the same stuff we're going to ask Courtney to do here," tight ends/inside receivers coach Reno Ferri said when Jackson signed in December.

"So I think he has a leg up on a lot of the incoming guys."

Jackson fits the build of other slot receivers in the SU program and says he ran a 4.45-second, laser-timed 40-yard dash during winter workouts.

As things around Wake Forest’s football program change, one constant stands out to start spring practice (dailylocal.com; O'Neill)

Many things looked different Tuesday during at Wake Forest’s first spring football practice.

A few reasons relate to the nearly completed Sutton Sports Performance Center. Most notably among those is that the Deacons’ weight room has moved out of the end zone of McCreary Field House — giving Wake Forest a full 120-yard football field with which to work.

Other reasons include the Deacons’ changing personnel as the book closes on the 2018 team and the story of the 2019 team begins to be written. Maybe one of the clearest indications of that is Demetrius Kemp, last season’s starter at rover as a redshirt senior, is now helping in a volunteer capacity as he prepares for a shot at the next level. There were four players in Wake Forest’s practice who were playing high school games less than three months ago.

ACC Football Rx: Fan Gear INforcement (RX; HM)

Fan Gear INforcement

Special thanks to Bill Dooley for pointing this one out: how to use unsold tickets to create more T-shirt fans...

Summary: You're not going to sell out every game -- you'll always have some extra tickets. How can you utilize that ticket inventory without devaluing tickets that have actually been sold? The Chicago Cubs are tackling this issue with some brilliant creativity. Named after the MLB team's "Everybody In" slogan, the Cubs created an "IN-forcement" team, charged with finding random people wearing Cubs gear. When they encounter a fan, the IN-forcement team issues a "citation" which contains two tickets to a regular season game.

Chicago Cubs tickets are on sale for the 2019 season, and in order to thank fans, the team has mobilized an “IN-forcement” team. The Cubs sent out that team, so-named after the club’s “Everybody In” slogan, and they were tasked with finding fans who were sporting the team’s gear. If a fan was seen wearing Cubs garb, they were given a “citation,” which included two tickets to a 2019 regular season game at Wrigley Field...

The campaign is a great example of something that can be adapted to your campus and community. The key component is capturing it and sharing via social. You can see from the posts in the article, fans were actually changing their routes so they could be given a citation. If you're going to do something, do it well. And if you do it well, share it on social media.

source: Ranking the ACC's Football Rosters for 2019

FSU's #1 rank is a bit misleading - a lack of stability in the program and gaps in recruiting have been big problems for the Seminoles. Particularly, weaknesses and outright holes on the offensive line and at quarterback have hamstrung this otherwise strong program.

Clemson at #2 is actually on the rise.

ACC Football Rx: Stadium Shrinkage - 2/26/19 (RX; HM)

From John Wallstreet: Stadium Shrinkage En Vogue as “Time Has Become More Valuable Than Money”

Pro sports venues are shrinking. The Braves, Marlins, Twins and Yankees have all downsized since ‘09 and the Tampa Bay Rays plan to reduce seating at Tropicana Field from a league low 31,042 to between 25,000-26,000 this season. The Falcons, Vikings, 49ers, Colts, Cardinals and Rams (+Chargers) all opted to go small (71,000 seats or less), as well, with their new venues and the 65,000-seat building that the Raiders are building in Las Vegas will be among the league’s 5 smallest; only the Cowboys and Jets/Giants have built stadiums with more than 80,000 seats this millennium...

Why are they doing this?

Shrinkage is en vogue because fewer people are going to games... the increased competition (see: esports) for fans’ time, money and attention... won’t be changing, so pro sports venues will continue to get smaller and more efficient...

Besides continuing to shrink the stadiums, what can be done to attract fans?

Interesting article on stadium size. I would think removing some seating in the dome would be part of the renovation. Too many seats. Creates no demand.

I wouldn't think the Carrier Dome has too much capacity - it's not really all that big for football (for basketball maybe). Cuse might benefit from the ideas put forth in this article: ACC Football Rx: Rx: Fixing Ticket Sales at FSU (and elsewhere)
1. alternating 2 P5 home-and-home series so that one is at home each year
2. remote campus location - so limit TRUE home games to 6 per year, and
3. ONE neutral site per year that's convenient to large pocket of alumni (e.g. NYC)
4. Have both premium and cheap seats; both season tickets and "3-packs"

Been there, done that.

So what do you think is the reason Syracuse can't draw 49K for football? Is that really such a big number for the combined populations of Syracuse and Rochester (plus 15K undergrad students) to support?

could be a comination of just how many sports can a region actually support. FB is not king up here. if VT was to be under .500 for about 10 yrs they might have attendance issues too

Maybe there is more to do in upstate NY than rural VA.

Several Reasons:

1. Not as strong a Football Culture
2. Pretty mediocre to bad team records since 1999
3. Thousands of high paying jobs have left CNY since the last tie the Dome was mostly full (late 90's)

Good for Pitt. I thought their recent uniforms looked okay, but they didn't look like Pitt any longer. It is about time the schools took back their identities from the clueless and tasteless shoe companies who have been calling the shots in recent years.

I hope Syracuse can be as forward looking some day.

Does this mean we can't have platinum anymore?
