Today we celebrate poultry: domesticated birds that are raised for their meat and eggs, and sometimes also for their feathers. Besides referring to the bird itself, the name may also refer specifically to the meat of the bird. Birds such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese are considered to be poultry, while birds such as parrots and songbirds are not. Other birds considered poultry include quail, pheasants, and guineafowl. Birds that are hunted, known as game birds, are usually not included in the definition. The word "poultry" goes back to the Latin word pullus, which means "small animal."
The domestication of poultry began thousands of years ago, but it may not have originally been for food. For example, chickens may have first been kept for cockfighting, which was possibly the first spectator sport ever, starting in Persia around 6,000 years ago. Soon afterward, poultry began being domesticated for food. Poultry is now the second most eaten meat in the world. Approximately 30% of the world's meat production is poultry, while about 38% is pork. Poultry may be purchased fresh or frozen, cooked or raw, as a whole bird or in cuts, with or without the bone, and seasoned or plain. Most farmed birds are now raised in intensive commercial farming operations, as opposed to being extensively farmed. As time progressed, selective breeding practices took root, where birds were bred for certain attributes, such as being able to grow faster or lay more eggs.

‘Biggest job interview of our lives:’ Takeaways from Syracuse’s pro day (DO; Graham)
Over five weeks out from the NFL Draft, Syracuse football hosted its pro day on Monday, featuring 13 former SU football players.
With 26 NFL teams represented, players worked through a day of combine drills. Two players in attendance — wide receiver Jamal Custis and defensive tackle Chris Slayton — received invites to the NFL combine earlier this month.
Here are three takeaways from the day.
Eric Dungey throws
Dungey said he was mad he wasn’t invited to the NFL combine. He told reporters that after he turned in a consistent, albeit ordinary throwing workout.
“I think I could’ve gone there and done really well,” he said about his absence from the NFL combine.
Dungey attempted 42 throws to receivers running routes, completing 36 of them. He feasted on intermediate routes, displaying the refined footwork he and his quarterback coach Jake Heaps spent the past 10 weeks working on.
Heaps came away from Dungey’s work out pleased, he said. They had a script of throws intended to display Dungey’s known skillset and beyond, including “NFL” throws like 20-yard outs to the far sideline, sluggos and fly routes down the sideline. Dungey did struggle with his deep accuracy, pushing a few throws beyond his receivers. He also hit some timing routes from 10 yards out late.

Syracuse Football: Orange in Alliance of American Football, Week 6 recap (itlh.com; Esden Jr)
Week 6 of the Alliance of American Football is in the books. Here’s how all the Syracuse football alum performed over the weekend.
Amba Etta-Tawo, WR, Birmingham Iron
After enduring a two-game losing streak, the Iron scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to come back and beat the San Diego Fleet. Although they did that without Etta-Tawo’s services as he continues to work his way back from injury.
Ervin Philips, WR, Atlanta Legends
So far this season Erv Philips has registered nine receptions for 96 yards. Atlanta has used a wide variety at the receiver position this season, but Philips has proven his worth. This AAF league is all about second chances and getting back to the NFL. Ervin is a guy who has NFL abilities and it’s just a matter of time before he’s back.
Kevin Coyle, HC, Atlanta Legends
The Atlanta Legends were on a bit of a hot streak heading into Week 6, but it all fell apart against the San Antonio Commanders: 37-6. Now the Legends are really in a tough position as it pertains to the postseason. Atlanta has the second worst record in the league at 2-4 and is three games back of first place in the Eastern Conference.

Programming ideas for the new ACC Network (stateoftheu.com; Dottavio)
The ACC Network (via ESPN) will launch on Thursday, August 29, 2019 with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets taking a road trip to face the Clemson Tigers. The Jackets will have a new head coach in Geoff Collins, while Dabo Swinney’s Tigers are the defending College Football Playoff National Champions.
The ACC joins the Pac-12, SEC, and the Big Ten Network as full on conference network programming. Back in 2006, the Big Ten’s first live broadcast was Appalachian State at Michigan in what could be dubbed the biggest upset in college football history. The Pac-12 Network has been an utter failure while the SEC Network, also an ESPN affiliate, has done well with a focus on homerism and Paul Finebaum.
For the ACC Network to really work as more than just a place to watch a few games- they’ll need more than a mixture of solid live programming, studio shows, and personal interest pieces. It would benefit the network to go with more left field ideas and I have a few that I would love to bounce off the ACC and ESPN executives for the 2019 season.
“Portal Leap”
While the prime purpose of the ACC Network might be to broadcast live football and basketball games, their primetime show will be based on The U. “The New Miami” might be the tagline but I’m calling the show “Portal Leap,” and of course it stars Miami head football coach Manny Diaz.
In “Portal Leap,” Manny Diaz goes through the transfer portal but instead of taking him to another campus in the present day, it will take him to the Hurricanes Greentree practice fields in different eras throughout time. Like the DeLorean, Coach Diaz could punch in whatever date he wants and pull a former Hurricane back through the portal and onto the 2019 Miami Hurricanes roster.

It’s the start of spring (sort of) so it’s time to break down the 2020 recruiting so far in each conference. We continue with the ACC.
Biggest commitment: OT Kevin Pyne, Boston College – Boston College is on top right now with the biggest commitment in the ACC as Pyne has a chance to be special and is a great fit for the Eagles. It’s not often the Eagles land a national top 50 recruit, so this one is a big deal.
Best Out Of State Grab: OT Mitchell Mayes, Clemson – There are a few nice out of state grabs in the ACC, but I like Mayes to Clemson here. He’s big and athletic and continues the pipeline from North Carolina to Clemson.
In State Keep: WR Porter Rooks, NC State – In-state recruiting is going very well in the ACC and Rooks is a huge keep for the Wolfpack. He’s an elite receiver ready to contribute immediately.
Positional Fit: DE Samuel Anaele, Miami – Athletic edge rushers will be key for Manny Diaz and his defense and as Anaele gets bigger, stronger and learns more technique he could be that elite outside pass rusher the Canes like to feature in their defense.
Top Class: Miami – Clemson is No. 1 right now by a couple of points, but that’s to be expected coming off a national title. Miami’s class is loaded with in-state talent and is very impressive early. Clemson will finish with the No. 1 class but right now I’m more impressed with the ‘Canes.
Underrated Class: North Carolina – Mack Brown knows how to recruit and UNC has been a sleeping giant in the ACC forever. They are a long ways away from competing on the field, but a Top 15 class right now feels like it’s underrated a bit.
Long Haul Commit: QB Ben Finley, NC State – Look around the ACC and there aren’t many big-time commitments from a long way away. However, Finley following his brother Ryan to NC State all the way from Arizona is a big deal for the Pack and they can only hope he has a similar career.

Virginia Tech football spring preview: Defensive backs (gobblercountry.com; Manning)
The Virginia Tech Hokies have long been known for having one of the best secondaries in the nation. Since Tech’s rise to prominence in 1993, the Hokies have generally always had a strong secondary that saw multiple players go on to play in the NFL.
Whether it was the 90s that featured Tyrone Drakeford, Antonio Banks, Torrian Gray, Pierson Prioleau and Ike Charlton, among others, to the 2000s with DeAngelo Hall, Eric Green, Kam Chancellor and the Fuller brothers, the Virginia Tech secondary was always loaded with talent and a mindset that embodied defensive coordinator Bud Foster’s philosophy to a tee.

An unexpected treat for week zero!

Mainly I'm just curious to see how long the Blue Devils can hang with the Tide.

BSU is better on paper, but FSU is close to home and the Noles must be better than last year, right?
UNC S.Carolina
If Larry Fedora were still coaching UNC, I wouldn't give them a chance; with Mack Brown in charge... I still don't like their chances.

Tough start for Scott Satterfield's new coaching job

ACC Football Rx: National Champs, last 50 years (RX; HM)
National Champs, last 50 years
Athlon Sports had this "Ranking Every College Football National Champion Over the Last 50 Years" and of course there were plenty of teams now residing in the ACC... 16 of the 59 national champions mentioned by Athlon are teams fielded by present day ACC member institutions.
59. 1970 Texas Longhorns
58. 1973 Alabama Crimson Tide
57. 1974 USC Trojans
56. 2007 LSU Tigers
55. 1969 Texas Longhorns
54. 1984 BYU Cougars
53. 1990 Colorado Buffaloes
52. 1989 Miami Hurricanes
Record: 11-1
Finished: Beat No. 7 Alabama 33-25 in the Sugar Bowl
Final Ranking: No. 1
Notable Wins: No. 14 Pittsburgh (24-3), No. 1 Notre Dame (27-10), and No. 7 Alabama (33-25)
Consensus All-Americans: One (Greg Mark)
Miami’s national title hopes appeared to be dashed by a 24-10 loss to Florida State loss in the middle of the season. The Hurricanes got redemption in the final game of the regular season, beating No. 1 Notre Dame 27-10 to move up to No. 2. Miami then dispatched Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and Notre Dame beat No. 1 Colorado to give The U its third national championship.

Trump housing chief Ben Carson interested in Syracuse Surge, plans visit (PS; Weiner)
Ben Carson, President Donald Trump’s top housing official, wants to visit Syracuse to check out plans for the Syracuse Surge, a $200 million economic development plan to remake the city.
Carson, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, discussed the proposal during a private meeting last week with U.S. Rep. John Katko at HUD headquarters in Washington.
Carson expressed interest in visiting Syracuse to see how the city plans to transform its economy with public and private investment centered on a series of projects on the south end of downtown, Katko said.
The centerpiece of the plan is a Southside Campus for the New Economy that will be anchored by the overhaul of Central Tech into a high school dedicated to science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Students would be accepted from throughout Onondaga County.
