Welcome to National Zipper Day!

National Zipper Day is observed each year on April 29th. This day celebrates something that we often do not think about and just automatically take for granted.

It was first in 1851 that Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, received a patent for an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure.” Howe never made an attempt to market his invention and missed the recognition he may have received.

Forty-two years later, Whitcomb Judson began selling the “Clasp Locker.” Being very similar to Elias Howe’s patent, this device served as a more complicated hook-and-eye shoe fastener. Judson started the Universal Fastener Company where he manufactured his new device and debuted it at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 but was met with little success. Because Judson put his invention before the public for sale, he earned credit as its creator.

In 1906, Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American electrical engineer, was hired to work Universal Fastener Company. He was highly skilled and known for his devotion to the company. In 1913, he invented the modern zipper. The patent for the “Separable Fastener” was issued in 1917.

By 1923, B.F. Goodrich popularized the word zipper as it applied to use in the boots and pouches it made. The company even copyrighted the name for a time.

Several former Orange football players find NFL homes as undrafted free agents (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Once the 254th draft pick was announced on Saturday evening, all 32 teams in the National Football League began making calls to undrafted free agents to join their respective rookie mini camp this summer.

Only one Syracuse football player was selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, as the New York Giants took Orange defensive tackle Chris Slayton with the 245th overall pick in the 7th round.

Besides Slayton, Syracuse had a handful of others sign undrafted free agent deals across the league.

Below are each player and where they're headed:

Jamal Custis (WR) -- Kansas City Chiefs
Cody Conway (OT) -- Tennessee Titans
Koda Martin (OT) -- Los Angeles Chargers
Dontae Strickland (RB) -- Arizona Cardinals
Ravian Pierce (TE) -- Cleveland Browns

Former Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey has yet to sign with a team as of late Sunday night. If Dungey does land a deal moving forward, stay with CNY Central for all the updates.

Former South Brunswick star Strickland invited to Arizona Cardinals minicamp (mycentralhersey.com; Tufaro)

Former South Brunswick High School football star Dontae Strickland, who ended his career at Syracuse University as the college’s 25th all-time leading rusher, has accepted an invitation to the Arizona Cardinals rookie minicamp.

Strickland, who was the Home News Tribune’s 2014 Defensive Football Player of the Year, will attend the three-day camp, which commences Thursday, according to DEC Management, which represents him.

The Cardinals, who did not draft a running back, feature five running backs on their roster. Arizona’s offense was among the NFL’s worst last season, ranking last in yards passing, yards rushing and points scored.

Strickland rushed for 1,717 yards on 432 attempts and caught 63 passes for 505 yards during 47 games with the Orange, 27 of which he started.

Not unlike his high school team, Syracuse utilized a backfield by committee.

Given the construct of South Brunswick’s triple option, Strickland’s opportunities to make an impact on offense during his scholastic career were, compared to other big-time playmakers, limited.

The Conferences With The Most Picks In The 2019 NFL Draft (thespun.com; Holleran)

The 2019 NFL Draft is over and, unsurprisingly, the SEC once again led the way when it comes to major college football conferences.

The SEC had more selections than any other conference. This is the 13th year in a row that the SEC had more picks than anyone else.

The league had 64 total selections.

Adam Schefter✔@AdamSchefter

SEC led all conferences in draft picks for the 13th straight year. There were 64 selections out of the SEC this year, most by a conference in the Common Draft Era.

Here are the full standings for this year’s major conferences:

SEC – 64
Big Ten – 40
Pac-12 – 33
ACC – 28
Big 12 – 26
Independents – 7

Dabo's New Contract - 4/29/19 (RX; HM)

Friday, Clemson University gave head football coach Dabo Swinney a major contract extension, and it's worth discussing here, IMO. From an article in USAToday:

The Clemson Board of Trustees Compensation Committee approved a 10-year, $93-million deal for Swinney on Friday morning. Swinney holds the largest contract in college football history, eclipsing the eight-year, $74-million deal Alabama awarded Nick Saban last year.

In other words, Swinney will be making $9.3 million/year on average, while Saban will have to try to get by on a mere $9.25 million/year... poor Nick! It does seem like the title "largest contract in College Football history" is a very short-term thing these days, though.

Coach Swinney's deal is front-loaded, too:

Swinney will earn $10.25 million in the first year of the contract, including $8.25 million in total salary, $1 million for a split-dollar life insurance premium and a $1 million retention bonus from the previous contract. That figure pushes Swinney ahead of all Bowl Subdivision coaches for the 2019 season.

Here's a table of other highly-compensated head football coaches, based on data published by USA Today:

Head Coach School 2019, $M
Dabo Swinney Clemson $10.25
Nick Saban Alabama $8.7
Jim Harbaugh Michigan $7.5
Jimbo Fisher Texas A&M $7.5
Gus Malzahn Auburn $6.7
Kirby Smart Georgia $6.6
Jeff Brohm Purdue $6.1
Dan Mullen Florida $6.1
Lincoln Riley Oklahoma $6.0

2019 Undrafted ACC Underclassmen (RX; HM)

2019 Undrafted ACC Underclassmen

No NFL

From NFL.com: 2019 NFL Draft: 30 underclassmen go unselected

There were 103 underclassmen who received special eligibility for the 2019 NFL Draft; 30 of them (29%) went undrafted. (Last year, 35% of the underclassmen went undrafted). Of course, many of them will get an opportunity to try to make an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent - but that's a much taller hill to climb.

Here are the ACC underclassmen who went undrafted but completed their degrees:

Venzell Boulware, OL, Miami
Joe Giles-Harris, LB, Duke
Jakobi Meyers, WR, N.C. State
Anthony Ratliff-Williams, WR, North Carolina
William Sweet, OT, North Carolina

There were three more undrafted ACC underclassmen:

Hamp Cheevers, CB, Boston College
Greg Dortch, WR, Wake Forest
Tre Lamar, LB, Clemson

BOTTOM LINE: every year there are a few ACC players who had great seasons, declared themselves eligible for the NFL draft... then don't get picked.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2019/04/28/less-than-stellar-nfl-draft-is-a-warning-sign-for-acc/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Fann)

Less than stellar NFL draft is a warning sign for ACC.

Some fans get caught up with their conference’s recruiting rankings, and NFL draft numbers rather than actual on the field results. That doesn’t mean they are meaningless though. The ACC typically runs second to the SEC during the NFL draft weekend. In 2018 the SEC led all conferences with 53 draft picks and the ACC with 45. In 2019 though the ACC overall took quite a step back.

ACC Atlantic
BC -4
Clemson -6
FSU -2
Louisville- 0
NC State - 4
Cuse - 1
Wake - 1

ACC Coastal
Duke - 1
GT - 0
UNC - 1
Miami - 5
Pitt - 1
UVA- 2
VT - 0 #Cyclical

Chase Goodbread✔@ChaseGoodbread

2019 draft picks by conference:

SEC - 64
Big Ten - 40
Pac-12 - 33
ACC - 28
Big 12 - 26
Indies - 7

The fact that Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech combined for exactly ZERO NFL draft picks, and Florida State had only 2 speaks to the recent decline of those programs. That’s a serious warning sign for the conference overall, and one that could take a few years to remedy. Each of these schools had multiple 9+ win seasons during the middle part of the decade, but have fallen. This has certainly diminished the ACC’s depth. It will take some time to remedy this, because if it continues the ACC could struggle with a lack of depth like during the 2018 season. Kudos to Syracuse for being the ACC’s only other ranked team in 2018 after Clemson, and Virginia for being considerably improved.

60-Second Syracuse: The Elvis concert which never happened (PS; Croyle)

One of the tragic facts about the music industry is that many of its most famous stars die way too young.

Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Colbain were each 27 when they died. Buddy Holly was 22, Tupac Shakur was 25.

The loss leaves their fans with feelings of what might have been, and a potential not fully reached.

Elvis Presley died at the age of 42 on Aug. 16, 1977.

And while the “King of Rock and Roll’s” star may have been fading when he died, to his most die-hard fans the sense of loss was enormous.

“The biggest box-office attraction in the history of movies, Presley first came to public attention as a sneering, hip-swiveling singer of hillbilly and blues tunes, and he was to exert an unending fascination on three decades of teenagers,” the Post-Standard said the day after Presley’s death.

For Elvis fans in Syracuse, the loss was even more painful.

“The King” was scheduled to perform at the Onondaga County War Memorial just four days later.

Devastated fans, saddened that would not have another chance to see Elvis live, clung to his records and their memories.

Why is Notre Dame listed in the football draft listings? They are not in the ACC.
