Welcome to Asparagus Day!

Asparagus, from the genus family Asparagaceae, is made up of more than 200 species. The most common and economically important is garden asparagus, which is cultivated to be eaten, and is celebrated today! It is usually green with a purple-tinged top, but white asparagus is another common variety and is often grown in Europe. In particular, in France's Argenteuil, asparagus is grown underground so that chlorophyll does not develop. This white asparagus is thick, is smoother than green types, and is known for its tenderness and delicate flavor. There is also a purple variety of asparagus called viola.

Asparagus was a delicacy of the ancient Romans and Greeks, and its name comes from the Greek word "asparagos." The name first appeared in print in English around 1000 CE. Native to the Eastern Hemisphere, it is not known exactly when it came to America; there is record of it growing in New Jersey by at least 1740. It was being grown in California by the 1850s, and 70 percent of the national crop is still grown there.

Position Breakdown: Receivers — 2019 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse loses its top receiver from 2018, Jamal Custis. He led the Orange with 906 yards and six touchdowns last season from the outside receiver position, landing Second-Team All-ACC honors.

Though Custis wasn’t selected in the 2019 NFL draft, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs for a guaranteed $100,000, the biggest payday for an undrafted WR in the last two years, which is a good sign that he’ll make the 53-man roster.

The Orange also lose Devin C. Butler, who fell out of favor after a Week 6 suspension against Pitt for a violation of team rules. Freshman Taj Harris started in his place and Butler never found his way back into the starting lineup, finishing with just 126 yards on 14 receptions on the year, roughly half of his sophomore year production.

Butler put his name into the transfer portal in early January.

Finally, SU’s top tight end, Ravian Pierce, exhausted his eligibility after a season where he caught 16 passes for 105 yards and three touchdowns.

PROJECTED STARTERS

During the spring game, Syracuse listed Sean Riley, Nykeim Johnson, Harris, Cameron Jordan as its starting receivers in four receiver sets. Riley, Johnson and Harris were all starters by the end of last year.

Riley emerged as an All-ACC caliber slot receiver last season, leading the team with 64 receptions and finishing second on the team with 756 yards to go with three touchdowns.

Returning Production from 2018
up down

This is based on an article posted back in January on SBNation about 2019 NCAA Football Returning Production. The idea is to look beyond simply how many players are returning, to how much productivity - how much value - is returning. With that in mind, here's how the ACC looks:

Team OFF RET Rk DEF RET Rk Total Ret Rk
Virginia Tech 60% 77 96% 1 78% 11
Florida State 74% 33 80% 17 77% 13

North Carolina 81% 15 61% 76 71% 35
Clemson 77% 26 52% 100 64% 53
Pittsburgh 64% 62 64% 62 64% 54
Virginia 56% 90 72% 38 64% 55

Midweek Musings - How Would Penn State Do in the ACC? (blackshoedairies.com; Lucia)

5-7? 4-8? Speed kills.

Here’s a fun thought experiment for you - what if, back in the early 1990s, Penn State had opted for the ACC rather than the Big Ten?

Of course there are a lot of elements that would have changed, but let’s imagine just for a minute than in 2019, Penn State was a member of the ACC, perhaps with Pitt traded out. Let’s say in the early 90s, the Big Ten desperately wanted Pitt (I know, humor me), and the Panthers joined the B1G. Let’s say that Penn State instead joined the ACC, and let’s also assume the same other expansions, including Miami, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse in the intervening years. Here’s how the ACC would look:

Atlantic Division
Boston College
Clemson
Florida State
Louisville
NC State
Syracuse
Wake Forest

Coastal Division
Duke
Georgia Tech
Miami
UNC
Penn State
Virginia
Virginia Tech

As much as I enjoy the Big Ten, it’s fun to think how this conference would play out. Playing teams in Virginia, one of our regular recruiting grounds would be fun, and having an extended presence in the southeast could only help our visibility with the recruiting hotbed down that way.

For an extra fun exercise, here’s what our schedule would look like in 2019 if we flipped spots with Pitt:

Virginia
Ohio
at Pitt
UCF
Delaware
at Duke
at Syracuse
Miami (FL)
at Georgia Tech
UNC
at Virginia Tech
Boston College

...Does any team on that schedule scare you? There’s no team in the same continent as Ohio State or Michigan on that schedule. UCF, Syracuse, and Miami (FL) would all be fun games, but I can’t imagine Penn State wouldn’t be favored in all three.
