Welcome to National Apple Strudel Day!

Apple strudel, a type of layered pastry filled with apples, is celebrated today. Strudels are usually sweet, but they can be savory as well. Their name comes from the German word "strudel," which means "whirlpool" or "eddy." The oldest recipe for them dates to 1696, and they originated from similar pastries from the Middle East and Byzantine Empire. During the eighteenth century, they became popular in the Habsburg Empire. They are associated with Austrian cuisine, and common in all areas that once comprised Austria-Hungary.

National Apple Strudel Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 17th.

Syracuse Adds Versatile Athlete to 2020 Class (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse's 2020 class has grown by one of the more versatile athletes in the Northeast. Three star Suffield (Conn.) Academy athlete Justin Barroncommitted to Syracuse during an unofficial visit. He is the Orange's fitch commitment in the 2020 cycle and first from Connecticut. He is the second from New England, however, joining three star defensive lineman Kevin Lemieux. He is also the second commitment on Sunday as the Orange landed three star defensive end Leon Lowery earlier in the day.

“Syracuse felt like home,” Barron said. “I want to be a part of a program where I am going to help win championships.”

Barron has visited the Syracuse campus multiple times before. The Orange prioritized him early, and stayed in constant communication. The staff, including primary recruiter Brian Ward, was able to develop a strong relationship with Barron, which led to the ultimate commitment during the visit. Barron chose Syracuse over offers from Boston College, Connecticut, Navy, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Virginia, among many others including interest from Penn State. He is rated a three star prospect and the eighth best player in the state.

Congratulations to Adrian Autry, Allen Griffin and Jalen Carey for helping the USA East Coast team to a 3-0 record on its exhibition tour of Greece! On to today’s recruiting links…

Syracuse landed its fourth commitment in its 2020 class on Sunday, with three-star defensive lineman Leon Lowery announcing his decision on Twitter. The North Brunswick (NJ) prospect chose SU over offers from Indiana, Rutgers and Temple, among others.

A few hours after that, Syracuse received its fifth commitment in the 2020 class, adding three-star athlete Justin Barron from Suffield (Conn.) Academy, he announced on Twitter. 247 Sports’ Mike McAllister caught up with him after the announcement. “Syracuse felt like home,” Barron said. “I want to be a part of a program where I am going to help win championships.” He held offers from schools that included Boston College, Connecticut, Navy, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Virginia. He projects as a linebacker, tight end or receiver in college.

The Orange is also in the final six for 2020 three-star linebacker AJ Roberts, he tweetedon Friday. The schools also include Duke, UMass, Boston College, Pitt and LSU. McAllister also caught up with him following the Staten Island (NY) prospect’s announcement, saying that SU has been checking in with him “like crazy.”

Syracuse extended an offer to 2020 wide receiver Jahmal Banks from Arlington (Va.), he announced via Twitter on Saturday evening. William & Mary, Wake Forest and Elon are among the other schools after his services.

https://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/06/16/syracuse-seeing-spike-in-football-season-ticket-sales/ (nbcsports.com; McGuire)

Dino Babers had Syracuse enjoying a 10-win season for the first time since 2001 last season. Fans of the Orange have had their enthusiasm for the football program rejuvenated and it shows in the season ticket sales this offseason.

According to a report from Syracuse.com, Syracuse has recorded 4,500 more season ticket sales this year than the school saw all of last year. To date, as of Friday, Syracuse has sold 6,800 season tickets for the 2019 season as the total inches closer and closet to a possible school record (8,000).

On top of the increased season ticket sales, Syracuse is also seeing a great retention rate through season ticket renewals. Syracuse has seen over 90 percent of season ticket holders renew their ticket packages for the 2019 season.

Syracuse ended the 2018 season ranked No. 15 in the final AP poll. IT is the highest Syracuse has ended a season in the AP Top 25 since the 2001 season (No. 14). Babers also ended Syracuse’s bowl drought in style by coaching Syracuse to a Camping World Victory in Syracuse’s first bowl game since 2013.

Syracuse opens the 2019 season on the road at Liberty on Aug. 31.

https://cnycentral.com/sports/college/plenty-of-syracuse-athletics-games-will-be-on-new-acc-network-will-you-be-able-to-watch (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

It's a new channel by ESPN that will broadcast more games in the ACC than ever before and especially offer extra exposure to every sport.

It will also bring more money to the pockets of all ACC member schools, including Syracuse.

But will you be able to watch the ACC Network?

The channel launches in August, with early football games offering enticing programming and even basketball season openers will feature marquee matchups like Syracuse hosting Virginia on November 6th in the first game of the year for both schools.

Like any new channel or network, there are negotiations between the TV carriers (Charter/Spectrum, DirecTV, Dish, Verizon Fios etc.) and ESPN and the ACC.

Right now, the ACC Network has carriage agreements with Central New York favorites like DirecTV, Verizon Fios and several others along with prominent streaming services like Playstation Vue.

But you may have noticed, one major carrier is missing, so far.

Charter/Spectrum and the ACC/ESPN are still in negotiations, something Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack says could continue "into the 23rd hour".

Wildhack has the unique perspective of being a former top executive at ESPN with intricate knowledge of how these negotiations can work.

Louisville football recruiting providing new hope in the future to Cardnation (bigredlouie.com; Meyer)

After an unprecedented week on the recruiting trail, we look back on the timeline for every new Louisville football commit.

Are you having a hard time keeping up with Louisville football’s 2020 recruiting class? So are we.

The Cards have landed eight commitments in five days, making them by far the hottest team in the country on the recruiting trail. The success we’ve seen on the recruiting trail has been unlike anything we’ve ever witnessed before, as the Cards have jumped upwards of 50ish spots over two and a half weeks.

After months of identifying talented players, ones that fit the new offensive and defensive systems, and beginning the early stages of relationship building with players in the 2020 class, the commitments are beginning to role in.

Players are picking up the message of culture change, brotherhood, and family that the staff is selling and hopes are rising quickly in Louisville. Not to mention, the Louisville football staff is using Card Nation’s favorite medium to tease news in their favorite way – gifs on Twitter.

Dwayne Ledford, ShaDon Brown, Gunter Brewer, and Scott Satterfield are using their fun personalities and Twitter to bring a newfound excitement to the Louisville program and fans are loving it.

https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2019/06/rx-what-can-acc-do-about-gap-in-2019.html (RX; HM)

The ACC doesn't distribute as much money as the Big Ten or the SEC and possibly never will, but can it cut the financial gap so that it's not a significant disadvantage? Here are some ideas I had for what the ACC might be able to do about the money situation...

Rx: Main TV Contract.
The next "look-in" for the ACC and ESPN is reportedly scheduled for 2022. What is the purpose of these look-ins, and how might the ACC be able to use them to increase revenue?

The ACC’s contract with ESPN calls for periodic “look-ins” - times when executives from both entities will be able to sit down and discuss whether the contract terms needs to be renegotiated. This is NOT an automatic adjustment based on performance! Whether the ACC exceeds expectations or grossly under-performs has no bearing on the contract. So what good are these look-ins?

The purpose of the look-in is to address changes in the media marketplace and make adjustments in the ACC/ESPN contract accordingly. How could that play out? Let's say the internet-based TV market is really taking off by then (not hard to imagine). Could there be a market for an a la carte ACC digital network? That would likely call for a change in the contract.*

Here's another scenario: what if the ACC and ESPN decide to launch a virtual reality version of the ACC Network: ACCVR? That would probably mean a whole new contract, with its own revenue parameters (I say probably because we're talking about difference cameras and, most likely, a different way to broadcast games).

Syracuse just got a verbal from a player from Glastonbury...

From StadiumTalk: Best High Schools for Sports by State
I've included bits from the states ACC teams are more likely to recruit - to view the other states, click the link above.

Alabama: Hoover High School
City: Hoover
Year opened: 1994
Type of school: Public
Enrollment: 2,950

Connecticut: Glastonbury High School
City: Glastonbury
Year opened: 1953
Type of school: Public
Enrollment: 1,991

Delaware: Newark High School
City: Newark
Year opened: 1893
Type of school: Public
Enrollment: 1,150

Florida: The Bolles School
City: Jacksonville
Year opened: 1933
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $55,630 (boarding), $27,240 (day)
Enrollment: 1,800 (pre-K-12)

Whenever you throw "the" in front of your school name à la The Ohio State University, you better have the accolades to back it up, and The Bolles School does. Bolles' athletic programs are so prestigious that their 11 football state championships don’t even get top billing. That’s because Bolles’ swimming program can stand toe-to-toe with any other high school sports program in the country. The boys’ swim team has won 40 state championships, including 31 straight from 1988 to 2018, while the girls’ team has won 32 state titles, including 28 straight from 1992 to 2018. The two teams also have combined for 17 national championships in swimming, and Bolles has had at least one student or alumni swimmer compete in every summer Olympics since 1972.
Georgia: Parkview High School
City: Lilburn
Year opened: 1976
Type of school: Public
Enrollment: 2,984

Just outside of Atlanta, Parkview is one of the newest schools on this list, opening in 1976. However, over that time, Parkview has racked up 57 state championships with seven coming in baseball. The baseball team also claims three national championships with all of those coming this decade. Parkview also has had success in other sports as its 1997 state championship football team appeared on local Cheerios boxes. Additionally, Parkview has won 16 state titles in soccer (seven in boys, nine in girls) and the boys’ team had a 57-game unbeaten streak in the 1990s.
Indiana: Pike High School
City: Indianapolis
Year opened: 1892
Type of school: Public
Enrollment: 3,306

Kentucky: St. Xavier High School
City: Louisville
Year opened: 1864
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $14,325
Enrollment: 1,334

Founded in 1864, St. Xavier is the oldest all-boys high school in Kentucky, and all of that history has lent itself to many championships — 180 of them to be exact. In fact, the school has won at least three state titles in every sport offered. St. Xavier's swimming and diving team has racked up 54 titles, but the St. Xavier Tigers football team gets the most recognition. That’s because they play in what’s called "the most attended regular-season high school football game in the country." St. Xavier and its rival, Trinity High, routinely have nearly 40,000 fans in attendance at the University of Louisville's Cardinal Stadium to watch their annual matchup. The crowd is just a few thousand short of what Louisville football averages for its home attendance.
Louisiana: Jesuit High School
City: New Orleans
Year opened: 1849
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $9,150
Enrollment: 1,372

Maryland: Gilman School
City: Baltimore
Year opened: 1897
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $30,550
Enrollment: 1,015

Massachusetts: Cushing Academy
City: Ashburnham
Year opened: 1865
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $61,500 (boarding), $41,800 (day)
Enrollment: 390

With a tuition for boarding students that exceeds $60,000, Cushing is one of the most expensive schools in the country. Their students are supplied with world-class facilities, including a hockey rink that NHL players used during the lockout. Cushing Academy’s boys' hockey team has produced dozens of professional players, won three state championships and 21 in-season tournaments. Hall of Famer Ray Bourque was so impressed with the school and the hockey team that he served as a volunteer coach for the squad after hanging up his skates.
Mississippi: Jackson Academy
City: Jackson
Year opened: 1959
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $15,900
Enrollment: 1,250 (K-12)

New Jersey: Don Bosco Prep
City: Ramsey
Year opened: 1915
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $16,935
Enrollment: 850

New York: Archbishop Molloy
City: New York City
Year opened: 1957
Type of school: Private
Tuition: $9,200
Enrollment: 1,490

Located in Queens, Archbishop Molloy’s athletics programs begin and end with one name: Jack Curran. The New York City native was the longtime coach for both the basketball and baseball teams, and he won more games as a coach than any other high school coach in the United States. Curran, who coached at the school for 55 years (from 1958 until his death in 2013), is the only person to be named national coach of the year in two different sports and was named local coach of the year an astounding 47 times total. He was equally adept as a coach in both sports, sending six players to the NBA and coaching Molloy’s baseball team to a 68-game win streak, the longest of all time, until La Cueva broke it.

Friday the 13th (Sept. 2019) (RX; HM)

Friday the 13th (Sept. 2019)

Here's the college football lineup for the evening of Friday, September 13th, 2019:
Game Network Coverage Notes Time
Washington St. vs. Houston (at NRG Stadium) - (Time and Network TBA, but will be an ESPN network)
North Carolina at Wake Forest - ESPN 6:00 PM
Kansas at Boston College - ACCN 7:30 PM
That's a lot of college football on a Friday night!

Why didn't ESPN move one of these games to Thursday night?
There IS an NFL game on TV that night - Tampa Bay at Carolina, 8:20 PM, NFLN - which I suppose would've been tough competition for the UNC/Wake game, but... not sure how much that would've taken away from the Kansas/BC game though.

What about Saturday night?
Glad you asked... but the ACC is already pretty crowded there as well:
Clemson at Syracuse - ABC 7:30 PM
Florida St. at Virginia - ACCN 7:30 PM

https://rubbingtherock.com/2019/06/17/clemson-football-3-reasons-chase-brice-best-backup-qb-nation/ (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

for gbo
The 2019 Clemson football team will have one of the best quarterback rooms in the nation with solid depth because of the Tigers’ backup Chase Brice.

The 2019 Clemson football team is one of the favorites to get back to the CFB Playoff and compete for the National Championship.

One of the major reasons why the Tigers are expected to dominate the ACC and get back to the playoff is because of Heisman contender Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. Lawrence, now a sophomore, led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 season taking over as the starter as a freshman and never looked back.

He was the Offensive MVP of the National Championship game.

But, behind Lawrence, Clemson football also has a solid option in a man named Chase Brice.

Here are three reasons Chase Brice is the best backup quarterback in the nation.

https://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/columnists/university-of-tennessee/john-adams/2019/06/17/tennessee-football-vols-recruiting-mack-brown-geoff-collins/1412336001/ (knoxnews.com; Adams)

No other conference can match the SEC when it comes to football recruiting.

That was true five years ago. It's just as true now as teams recruit their 2020 classes.

LSU, Alabama and Georgia are ranked in the top five. Ten SEC schools, including Tennessee, are ranked in the top 25 in 247Sports' composite rankings.

But a couple of SEC outsiders could provide even more competition, thanks to new coaching hires at North Carolina and Georgia Tech.

Mack Brown, who won 158 games in 16 seasons at Texas, came out of retirement after last season and returned to North Carolina, where he coached from 1988 to 1997. Brown’s first two teams at North Carolina won one game apiece. His last two teams there each won 10 games.

Brown has won wherever he has been. He also has recruited well.

He apparently hasn’t lost his recruiting touch. The Tar Heels already have 15 commitments, including four four-stars, for 2020.

It’s highly unlikely Brown will out-recruit UT, which ranked 12th nationally in 2019 in coach Jeremy Pruitt’s first full recruiting year. The Vols currently are No. 25.

But Brown might make it more difficult to get players out of North Carolina.

Geoff Collins isn’t recruiting as well as North Carolina in his first year at Georgia Tech. However, his recruiting work far exceeds that of his predecessor, Paul Johnson.

And Collins' initial success – 15 commitments (but only one four-star) – has the Yellow Jackets ranked 14th.

Like Pruitt, Collins built his coaching reputation as a defensive coordinator and a recruiter. He’s also a good promoter, which he’s already demonstrating at Georgia Tech.

It’s not easy for a college program to generate publicity in a pro town the size of Atlanta. Moreover, Georgia Tech long has been overshadowed by Georgia.

That’s why Collins’ promotional skills could have an impact. So could his recruiting. Georgia has become one of the hottest states in the country for football recruits, and the Bulldogs can’t get them all.

https://chopchat.com/2019/06/17/fsu-football-noles-secondary-rated-one-worst-acc/ (chopchat.com; Hunt)

FSU football is always in the discussion as “DBU” when it comes to producing the best defensive backs to play in the NFL.

FSU football has put its share of defensive backs in the NFL. There are former Noles littered across the league with multiple players making Pro Bowls recently.

Jalen Ramsey, Xavier Rhodes, Derwin James and Lamarcus Joyner just to name a few who have signed contracts worth millions of dollars.

However, none of those former players could help the ‘Noles secondary last season who gave up a record 30 passing touchdowns and over 3,200 passing yards.

It was a rough season for Harlon Barnett in his first year as defensive coordinator. A former NFL defensive back himself, he couldn’t be happy with that unit’s performance last season.

I wrote how I expect the defense to bounce back as a whole in 2019 as they had a lot of things going against them. However, one thing that definitely needs to improve is the play of the defensive backs.

They were so bad last season that Athlon Sports has them ranked among the worst in the conference:

  1. Virginia
  2. Clemson
  3. Syracuse
  4. Miami
  5. FSU
  6. Duke
  7. Virginia Tech
I know there are more than seven teams in the league but you’d never expect to see the likes of Syracuse, Virginia or even Clemson ahead of the Noles when it comes to secondary play.

Clemson has been great defensively, but their secondary has always seemed to be their weakest link.

The crazy thing is recruiting wise, FSU’s defensive backs are likely the highest ranked group of all those listed here.

Therefore, it’s inexcusable they’d be ranked that low. The good news is it’ll be the second season in Barnett’s scheme and the Noles have better talent and are deeper in 2019.

New task force to explore ways to use the Erie Canal (PS; AP)

A task force charged with revitalizing New York’s Erie Canal will hold its first meeting later this month and will soon announce several public meetings across the state.

Former Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney chairs the group, which has 19 members.

Among the group's focal points are potential new uses for 195-year-old waterway, how the canal can enhance economic development, recreation and tourism, and expansion of irrigation for farms in western New York.

The group also will explore ways the canal can mitigate impacts from flooding and ice jams along the 363-mile route and restore ecosystems in canal communities.

Recommendations will be made to Gov. Andrew Cuomo at year’s end.
