Welcome to National Caviar Day!

On July 18, National Caviar Day recognizes a seafood delicacy with roe on toast. The day also raises awareness about the survival of the sturgeon.
In simple terms, caviar is Sturgeon fish eggs. There are several species of Sturgeon fish. As a result, the caviar produced varies in colors depending on the species. Caviar is full of protein and vitamins making the delicacy a healthy meal.
The United States led distribution at 600 tons per year until around 1900. However, due to the over-harvesting of Sturgeon fish for the caviar, the U.S. banned harvesting for a time to protect the sturgeon fish from becoming extinct. The population has never recovered sufficiently since the ban, resulting in caviar’s continued status as a luxury item. Since then, harvesting, import, and export are restricted.

He deftly sidestepped the conversational minefields Wednesday. Syracuse coach Dino Babers couldn’t be coaxed into discussing his team’s Week Three showdown with Clemson, and he politely tempered talk of his warp-speed offense.
But when it came to his punter, Babers pulled no pooches.

“Our punter is an NFL punter, write it down,” Babers said at the ACC Kickoff at The Westin Charlotte. “He will kick in the National Football League.”

If that prophecy plays out, the next Armwood High alumnus to reach the NFL will do it by virtue of a hang time instead of a 40 time. Former Hawks specialist Sterling Hofrichter, entering his senior year at Syracuse, could emerge as the country’s best punter this fall.

“Sterling can consistently punt the ball and hit the ceiling in our indoor (facility), and that’s pretty amazing,” Orange senior defensive end Kendall Coleman said. “It’s not something that every once in a while happens by chance. If Sterling wants to, he’ll be like, ‘Hey, watch this,’ and knock it off the top.”

But don’t just take Babers’ or Coleman’s word for it, look at the Hofrichter resume, which includes eight field goals, 61 PATs and a 40.1-yard punting average his senior year at Armwood in 2014.

A first-team All-ACC pick in ’18, he enters his final college season with a 42.9-yard career average. Fifty of his 201 punts have covered at least 50 yards, and 70 have been pinned inside the 20.

To boot, he also handled kickoffs last season, averaging 60.2 yards on 101 attempts for an Orange unit that ranked first in the conference in return-yardage defense (18.3 yards per return).

“Some of the biggest arguments I got into with (assistant) coaches last year was, ‘Let the guy punt,’” Babers said.

“They’d be like, ‘Well, we’re gonna rugby, we’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do that.’ We’re like, ‘The guy’s an NFL punter, let him just punt the ball.’”

A quick take on the “start” of the college football season, the annual two day ACC Football Kickoff event, Wednesday and Thursday, held at The Westin Charlotte in the heart of the Queen City’s uptown district:

WHAT HAPPENED: The seven Atlantic Division teams went first this year with interviews and press conferences, following Commissioner John Swofford’s annual address which was highlighted by the impending debut of the ACC Network in just over a month. Besides Dino Babers, the Orange were represented by sophomore quarterback Tommy DeVito and senior defensive lineman Kendall Coleman.

ANALYSIS: Syracuse certainly has the respect and attention of the media covering the league and the other 13 league programs, as evidenced by the number of inquisitors around the Orange trio at the ‘Kickoff’ coming off a Top 25 finish and 10 victories. Babers was having nothing of talking Clemson in the third game of the season on Wednesday: “You guys (the media) jump to week three, we’ll have our hands full at Liberty and Maryland. Let us get there first. We don’t want to be a team that’s occasionally great, but consistently great.”

HERO: Clemson football. For without it, there would be no impending ACC Network. Business is good right now for the ACC with both the residing football/basketball national champions in the same academic year for the second time in three seasons. As a result, all of the league’s men’s and women’s programs have a new 24/7/365 national platform to showcase their campuses, coaches and athletes, with most non-football game coverage being orchestrated directly from new production control centers at each school.

The biggest obstacle standing between Clemson and a fifth straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship may be an early season Sept. 14 matchup at Syracuse.
Clemson has largely breezed through the ACC schedule over the last four seasons, going 34-2 in conference play while winning four straight conference titles and two national championships. The Tigers have defeated conference opponents by an average of 22 points during that four-year span, and few have been able to compete with them.

That is, except the Orange.

Coach Dino Babers' squad stunned No. 2 Clemson in 2017 27-24 at home. Last year the Orange gave Clemson another big scare at Death Valley before falling 27-23 after a touchdown run by Travis Etienne with 41 seconds left.

Florida State was supposed to have the best shot at putting an end to it. Louisville was maybe going to have the goods to get it done when Lamar Jackson was in town. Even North Carolina State had a few believers.

All fool’s gold. None of them had what it takes to knock Clemson from its now four-season perch atop the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Atlantic Division, but there’s a new challenger on the scene, and it’s far from one of the usual suspects.

Syracuse is the ACC underdog darling of the moment. Coming off a 10-3 season that saw it join reigning national champion Clemson as the only ACC teams ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll last season (the Orange were No. 15), there’s optimism in upstate New York.

And why not? Syracuse has 13 starters back (six on offense, seven on defense) and is the only team not named Alabama in the past two seasons to beat Clemson — handing the Tigers a stunning 27-24 loss in 2017.

Yet, Syracuse fourth-year coach Dino Babers is a realist. When asked Wednesday at the annual ACC Kickoff media event if he thought there was a talent gap between Clemson and the rest of the ACC programs, he went directly to last season’s national title game.

“Did you see what they did to Alabama?” said Babers, referring to Clemson’s 44-16 win, which served as redemption for the Tigers’ 24-6 loss to the Crimson Tide two seasons ago in the national championship game.

Still, the fact remains Syracuse is a poised bunch after last season’s shocking success coming off back-to-back 4-8 seasons in Babers’ first two years. Giving Clemson fits for two years straight, including Syracuse’s tight 27-23 loss last season at Clemson, has only served to further encourage the notion the Orange is for real.

“I think we match up really well,” Syracuse defensive lineman Kendall Coleman said. “That being said, Clemson is a phenomenal team with lots of talent. That’s known. I think talent-wise, we’re catching up. We’ve got more talented guys coming in to fill my shoes. It’s just exciting what we’re on the verge of.”

Coach Dino Babers says Syracuse plans to adjust its play-calling with redshirt sophomore Tommy DeVito under center.

Devito replaces Eric Dungey, the school’s all-time leading passer who helped put Syracuse football back on the map with a win over Clemson two years ago and a 10-win season in 2018 — the school’s first in 17 years.

While Dungey was a dual-threat QB who was never shy about breaking out of the pocket and making plays with his feet, DeVito is a self-proclaimed pocket passer who says running the football “is not my first thought.”

Babers says he thought long and hard about whether to bring DeVito to ACC media days given he’s entering his first season as the starting quarterback. He eventually relented, saying “if the shoes are too big, then you need to grow up and fill them.”
DeVito showed promise in his brief playing time last year when Dungey was hurt, leading Syracuse to wins over Florida State and North Carolina.

Football season is kinda, sorta here! Welcome to our 2019 ACC Kickoff opponents thread. This Wednesday and Thursday each team in the ACC will field questions about their expectations and prospects for the 2019 season. We will keep a running thread of what they’re saying in here and give you a crash-course on every 2019 Syracuse opponent.

11:45 a.m. – Florida State (vs. Syracuse Oct. 26th)

2018 Record:
5-7
All Time Series: 2-10
Last Meeting vs Syracuse: 7/15/18 Syracuse 30, FSU 7
What to Know About The Seminoles:
The pressure is on Florida State and head coach Willie Taggart as he enters year two at the helm. After snapping a 36-year bowl streak, FSU returns a large chunk of its defense and some blue-chippers on offense in running back Cam Akers and wide receiver Tamorrion Terry. In true Florida State fashion, talent is not the issue. It’s weather the Seminoles can sure up their offensive line woes and put last year behind them?

Syracuse "rivalry"

I expect the Syracuse rivalry to become like the Louisville "rivalry" and when they have a very talented QB they can keep it a good game but now that their QB is gone it will look a lot more like the Louisville game and previous Syracuse games before Dungey.

I think Babers is building his program the right way. He’s a lot different than Petrino. I think he has improved the talent level a good bit.

They probably won’t win 10 games again but I could see 8-9 depending on QB play.

Don't underestimate DeVito. He is very good, will probably out perform Dungey this year.

ACC Network announces personnel lineup for games, studio shows (awfulannouncing.com; Bucholtz)

We’re getting closer to the Aug. 22 launch of the ACC Network, and while whether some big providers will carry it is still up in the air, we’re learning more and more about the new network’s on-air talent. On Wednesday, ESPN announced the network’s three football broadcast teams, plus additional studio talent and studio shows.

And the talent there is an interesting mix of veteran ESPN personalities in new roles (including Dave O’Brien, Tim Hasselbeck and Jac Collinsworth) and new-to-ESPN figures (including Jon Beason, Wes Durham, Mark Herzlich, Eric Wood and Mark Richt). Here’s more about the broadcast teams (shown in the graphic at top) and the studio analysts from ESPN’s release:

O’Brien, who has been in the industry since 1987, including 15 years at ESPN, will call play-by-play alongside former NFL Live studio analyst Hasselbeck and former NBA sideline reporter Katie George. Chris Cotter, another versatile ESPN on-air personality, will be joined by newcomer and Super Bowl Champion Mark Herzlich in the booth and former Charlotte, N.C., sports anchor Kelsey Riggs on the sidelines. Twenty-five-year professional Wes Durham will be accompanied by ESPN analyst Roddy Jones and former NFL Pro Bowler Eric Wood on the field.

In addition, Collinsworth, the host of NFL Live, will also host ACCN’s signature football program The Huddle, while Beason, a studio analyst, will share insights and analysis earned during his playing days at Miami and in the NFL.
“We feel very lucky to have assembled such a smart, fun, thoughtful group to cover ACC football both in the studio and announce booth on ACCN,” said Amy Rosenfeld, ESPN senior coordinating producer and production lead for ACCN. “ACC schools are well represented on our team. We will also have the benefit of a wide range of experience – from coaching to alums from both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.”

First-year coach Scott Satterfield says he won't measure Louisville's success this season in terms of wins and losses, but rather by if players are demonstrating the right attitude and giving their best effort on a daily basis.

He said Wednesday at ACC media days that in the long run daily effort is most important for the Cardinals' flailing football program.

Satterfield knows Louisville faces a long road back after going 2-10 overall and 0-8 in ACC play in 2018. They have question marks up and down the roster with no clear star players to build around.

The even-keeled Satterfield plans to lean on his success at establishing Appalachian State as a winner in his attempt to rebuild Louisville. He led the Mountaineers to four straight bowl wins and three conference championships before accepting the job at Louisville.

4 p.m.
For the second straight year, Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson enters the season unsure of who'll be under center.

But unlike last year he has two quarterbacks with some college playing experience.

Sophomore Sam Hartman and redshirt junior Jamie Newman return from last year and will battle this summer for the job, Clawson says.

Hartman started nine games last season and threw for 1,984 yards and 16 touchdowns before a season-ending injury against Syracuse. Newman started the final four games and won three, including the Birmingham Bowl against Memphis to put himself in contention for the starting job.

In the rush of a Power 5 college football coaching negotiation with the University of Louisville, Scott Satterfield didn’t have a lot of time for research.
The one thing he knew: Louisville was an Atlantic Coast Conference program that, despite a rough season, had been successful in the league. And coaching in the ACC would be a dream come true for a guy who grew up in Durham, N.C., selling game programs to get into Blue Devils’ games for free.

On Wednesday, Satterfield realized that dream when he stepped onto a stage with other coaches from the ACC’s Atlantic Division. As the group posed for a photo, he was told, "Here, you sit down in the front row," next to Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.

His response: “I’m just glad to be on the stage.”

“The opportunity to coach in this league that I've followed my whole life is a dream come true,” Satterfield said, over and over again, during a day of ACC interviews.

But when he started taking a serious look at where the Louisville program was shortly after his arrival, the feeling was hardly euphoric.

“You take a job, you don’t have a lot of time for research,” he said. “I didn’t know they'd given up 50 points five straight games. I didn't know that. I wouldn't even think to look. I saw their record. I knew something wasn't right.”
But evidence of something wrong was all over the place, beginning with the roster itself.

“We had eight scholarship linemen,” Satterfield said. “That blows my mind. They had 15 receivers on scholarship. Those should be reversed, I think. That was surprising to me.”
It wasn’t all. He said coming from Appalachian State to Louisville, he expected to see a pretty significant increase in overall talent.

“That wasn’t the case,” he said. “Some of the talent at App probably would start in front of these guys. And then the other way around with some. I just anticipated these guys would be a lot better, and it wasn't the case.”

And then there were the little things. He was surprised to learn that many of Louisville’s players never had been upstairs to the coaches’ new offices (though it should be note, they haven’t been in their current configuration long, since the football facility expansion was only completed before the start of last season).

“That blows my mind,” Satterfield said. “So the fact that we're having them over to our houses, and they're hanging out in our offices, that means a lot to them and to us. We’re with these guys every day, for a long period of time, and we want them to be able to trust us, and we want to be able to trust them. And you do that by having relationships. That's what it's all about.”

Those kinds of things have been a revelation to the players, according to wide receiver Seth Dawkins.

Football:
Head coach Willie Taggart, defensive tackle Marvin Wilson and wide receiver Tamorrion Terry all spoke at ACC Media Days in Charlotte on Wednesday, touching on everything from season expectations to the turnover backpack. See their interviews here, or a quick recap below:

Transfer quarterback Jordan Travis is still waiting for a decision on his application for a waiver to be eligible this year.

Cam Akers, who set a 585 lb. squat personal record on Wednesday, was also named to the Doak Walker watch list.

An article from Bleacher Report last month brought to light some of the dysfunction from the end of Jimbo Fisher’s Florida State tenure, and he was asked about it at SEC Media Days:

“In this business, you learn to have tough skin, you learn the circumstances of everything that happens and how it happens (but) that’s part of this business,” Fisher said in the Hyatt Regency Birmingham-Wynfrey Hotel. “People are going to say and write things, and you know what goes on and you move on. I have nothing but respect for my time at Florida State. It is a phenomenal place and those players and kids and everyone that was there. I had a great time. We had great success. I wish them nothing but the best. You move on with your business and move on. They’ll be successful I know, that’s a great program.”

Mark Richt still draws a crowd, is still talking about N’Kosi Perry and the UM quarterback situation and is back to being that affable, easy-going, slow-talking southerner who continues to gush about his wife, Katharyn.

But now he’s also telling folks in South Florida to “do what you gotta do’’ to plea to popular cable providers such as Comcast/Xfinity and AT&T U-verse that haven’t yet partnered with the soon-to-be-launched ACC Network, to get it done so thousands of University of Miami fans can watch their Hurricanes.

The day before UM football coach Manny Diaz was to make his grand entrance for the first time at the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff, former Canes coach Richt, who retired from coaching after a dismal 7-6 season, was introduced to the media Wednesday as an analyst for the soon-to-be-launched ACC Network.

https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/2019/07/17/acc-network-comcast-swofford-richt-2019-football/ (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Northam)

Talks about the ACC Network have been ongoing for three years, but now there’s just a little more than a month left until the highly-anticipated 24/7 channel launches on Aug. 22.

On Wednesday at the ACC Kickoff – the league’s branded term for its football media days – at the Westin hotel in Charlotte, staffing and programming were unveiled for the new network. Fans learned whose faces they would see the most, and what kind of shows the network would air when live sports aren’t happening.

While there was much excitement about that, feelings of anxiety crept in when ACC commissioner John Swofford was asked about the network’s distribution to cable providers. Swofford was specifically asked about the league’s negotiations with Comcast, which is a major cable provider in Pittsburgh, Miami, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and other large media markets.

He didn’t exactly answer the question directly.

“You’ll be able to get the ACC Network anywhere in the nation one way or another, whether it’s DIRECTV, whether it’s Hulu that are already on-board. People will have an opportunity to change carriers if they’re not happy with their current one who is not carrying the ACC Network,” Swofford said. “Contact your carrier if they’re not carrying it and demand that you want it. It’s a consumer sort of thing. Be passionate when you do it.

“The questions about distribution really should be answered by ESPN. What I will tell you is that we’re very confident that ESPN are the best in the world when it comes to distribution.”

The ACC Network has struck deals for distribution with Altice, DIRECTV, Google Fiber, Hulu, Optimum, PlayStation Vue, Suddenlink, TVision and Verizon Fios. But, in addition to Comcast, major cable providers such as Armstrong, Cox, Spectrum, Dish Network and AT&T U-Verse still don’t have an agreement with the ACC Network.

ACC Network — not football — dominates ACC Kickoff (greensboro.com; video)

Commissioner John Swofford speaks during the Atlantic Coast Conference NCAA college football media day in Charlotte, N.C., Wednesday, July 17, 2019

The CBS Sports Analyst joined the show to give us a full preview of the upcoming ACC season, including if anyone in the conference can come close to matching up against Clemson...

https://jerryratcliffe.com/acc-football-kickoff-notebook-swofford-urges-fans-to-request-acc-network/ (jerryratcliffe.com; Ratcliffe)

My good friend Tony Barnhart, known in Southern circles as “Mr. College Football,” wrote recently that if the SEC Network was not available to football fans down in Dixie, passionate fans might threaten to burn someone’s house down.

ACC Commissioner John Swofford doesn’t want his league’s fans to go that far, but he did strongly encourage them to make their feelings known to cable providers. The new ACC Network, affiliated with Disney-owned ESPN, is set to launch at 7 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Problem is, many of the cable TV companies within the ACC footprint — including Comcast/Xfinity in the Charlottesville region — haven’t signed on to carry the new network. The Miami, Fla., area (also a Comcast region) also hasn’t signed up along with many other areas of the ACC.

For instance, the Central Virginia area Comcast cable offers both the SEC and Big Ten networks, neither of which would be as relevant as the ACC’s own network.

Because the ACC boasts the largest population and the most TVs of any conference in the nation, the lack of a deal with cable companies presents a significant hurdle.

“I think our fan bases will respond very, very negatively if they’re not able to get [the network],” Swofford said Wednesday at the ACC Football Kickoff. “I think [fans] will show that. I would encourage them to show that, short of burning down any houses.”

The league’s long-time commissioner said that the way distribution works is that many such deals happen at the midnight hour.

https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2019-07-17/everything-dabo-swinney-said-about-acc-leadership-and-clemson (ncaa.com)

for gbo

Dabo Swinney has joined the elite ranks of college football coaches, leading his Clemson Tigers to two national championships in the past three seasons. Swinney spoke at ACC media days on Wednesday. Here's everything the coach said.

You can see the full transcript from John Simpson, Tanner Muse, and coach Swinney here.

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Coach Swinney.

Q: You've been in Charlotte a lot lately. How important is Charlotte for you guys? How important is Charlotte for the ACC?

DABO SWINNEY: Charlotte has been great, really has. This is a wonderful city, has a great infrastructure. Actually came up here for the All-Star basketball game this year. That was pretty cool.

It's a great venue that we're blessed to play in here in Charlotte. It's one of our goals every year, is to try to get here. Love everything about this city.

Q: Seems like every team today has been asked how they might be able to close the distance with Clemson. Knowing you still have that giant target on your back, how important is it for you to keep hammering those things that have made you successful to this point?

DABO SWINNEY: Yeah, it's kind of business as usual for us, to be honest with you. It's just what we do every year. We've had eight 10-plus winning seasons in a row, been very consistent. The reason for that is we start over. You heard these guys talk about it. Truly, we don't carry everything over. It's a new team, there's new challenges. You got to redevelop the leadership, reinstall the core values.

I start my meetings tomorrow with the coaches. We have five days. Even though we've all been together for a long time, when we meet tomorrow, it's as if we just showed up and met each other for the first time. We're going to install the program, what we do, how we do it, why we do it that way.

PRESEASON RANKINGS: NCAA.com's early top 25 teams for 2019 | Every college football poll, explained

Then we just go execute the plan. That's just the mindset that's woven into the culture. It's always about what's next. You got to show up every year with something to prove.

That sense of urgency, we create that all the time. It's in our off-season, our strength and conditioning program, the way we practice, the way we meet and message with our team.

For us, that's what we do. Then you got to continue to recruit the right people, develop your players. We've been able to consistently do that.

Q: Over the last several years you guys I think are 34-2 against ACC foes. You beat them by an average of 22 points. Seems like most teams you're rolling over. The last couple of years there's one team that has given you fits, and that's Syracuse. Why have those guys been able to play with you? Do you view them as your biggest obstacle in your path of where you want to go?

DABO SWINNEY: We've had a lot of teams give us fits. We've had some good wins and some games we've been able to get control of. I mean, shoot, we had three games with Louisville go down to the last play. Epic battles with NC State. I know Florida State this year was a different type of game, as they're transitioning. Unbelievable battles with Florida State, on and on and on.

Syracuse, Dino has just done an unbelievable job. It's a great place. It starts with him. I mean, he's put a good staff together. They have a good philosophy in place. They're well-coached. They recruit well. They develop well. You can tell that it's a relationship-driven program. He does a great job in connecting with his players. They play hard. They play hard.

He's created the belief in his team that they can win, regardless of who they play. That's what it takes. He's done an awesome job of instilling that mindset into their team. He's had good players, some really good players.

So I don't see them going away any time soon.

What was your favorite Halloween candy?

Which former Deacon great would you have liked to have played with or coached?

What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?

What did you dress up as for Halloween?

Those were just a few of the multitude of questions that Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson, senior linebacker Justin Strnad and senior running back Cade Carney faced during the Atlantic Division's day on Wednesday at the 2019 ACC Football Kickoff. More than 450 media members gathered at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte to discuss the seven Atlantic Division teams.

Each ACC Atlantic team was represented by an offensive player, a defensive player and the head coach. Each group met with the many different media outlets that cover the ACC including ACC Network, CBS, Fox Sports, Raycom, ESPN Gameday, the ACC Digital Network and Sirius/XM radio. Among the many luminaries in attendance were Wake Forest Learfield IMG College radio team members Dave Goren and Lary Sorensen, Wake Forest beat writers Conor O'Neill of the Winston-Salem Journal and Les Johns of Demon Deacon Digest, Wes Durham and Mark Packer who cover the ACC on Sirius/XM, and numerous new ACC Network announcers, analysts and sideline reporters. There were also bowl game directors from the ACC's newly announced line-up of 10 guaranteed bowl slots for the 2020-2025 seasons.

CBA grad Stevie Scott on watch lists for Doak Walker, Maxwell awards (PS; Owens)

Christian Brothers Academy graduate Stevie Scott III will have a lot of eyes on him this year.

The sophomore running back for Indiana University this week was named to the watch lists for two major college football honors -- the Maxwell Award, given annually to the player of year, and the Doak Walker Award, given to the top running back.

Scott made a big impression with the Hoosiers last year, setting school true-freshman records for rushing yards (1,137), rushing attempts (228), rushing touchdowns (10) and 100-yard games (six). He was an honorable mention all-Big Ten selection. Among true freshmen running backs, Scott ranked second nationally in yardage, 100-yard games and attempts and third in rushing touchdowns. His running backs coach at Indiana is Mike Hart, a former Onondaga High School standout who coached running backs at Syracuse University in the 2016 season.

Scott was an all-state player at CBA. He ran for a combined 42 touchdowns and more than 2,500 yards in his sophomore and junior years, but has his senior season shortened by a foot injury.

The Maxwell Award is given to the player of the year in college football. It’s presented by the Maxwell Football Club in honor of former player, referee and sportswriter Robert “Tiny” Maxwell.

The Doak Walker Award is given annually to college football’s top running back. It’s awarded by Southern Methodist University in honor of Doak Walker, who won the 1948 Heisman Trophy and is a member of both the college and pro football halls of fame.

Heat alerts issued in Upstate NY; it could feel like 110 degrees this week (PS; Coin)

The first of what will likely be many heat alerts has been issued for Upstate New York for the weekend.

An excessive heat watch has been issued for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Livingston, and Ontario counties. The watch is in effect from noon Friday through Saturday night.

“The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible,” said the National Weather Service. “Heat illnesses are likely for those spending prolonged periods outdoors or in non-air conditioned locations.”

An excessive heat watch means “that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected,” the weather service said.
Forecasts call for highs in the mid 90s Friday and Saturday, with oppressive humidity. The heat index, which calculates the combined effect of temperature and humidity on human skin, could reach as high as 110 degrees.
The weather service is likely to issue more heat alerts over the next couple of days, so check our weather page for updates.

All-ACC QUARTERBACK: Bryce Perkins – QB – Virginia?
Are you SERIOUS? You mean over Clemson's Trevor Lawrence? I watched the VT/UVA game - I'm not 100% convinced that Perkins is the best QB in the Commonwealth of Virginia... I also watched the ACC CG, the CFP semi-finals, and the CFP national championship - I AM 100% that Perkins is not better than Lawrence.

This should be part of our recruiting schpiel:

DABO SWINNEY:
Syracuse, Dino has just done an unbelievable job. It's a great place. It starts with him. I mean, he's put a good staff together. They have a good philosophy in place. They're well-coached. They recruit well. They develop well. You can tell that it's a relationship-driven program. He does a great job in connecting with his players. They play hard. They play hard.

He's created the belief in his team that they can win, regardless of who they play. That's what it takes. He's done an awesome job of instilling that mindset into their team. He's had good players, some really good players.

So I don't see them going away any time soon.

Perkins is a heck of a QB, but look at his pick at kicker?
FSU's Aguayo > Szmyt?
Aguayo went 11-for-17 (65%) last year on field goals.
