Welcome to National Root Beer Float Day!

Tuesday is “National Root Beer Float Day.” Did we need a day to celebrate the root beer float? Probably not. But since we have one, we might as well use it to score some free root beer.
A&W is celebrating the day by offering root beer enthusiasts a coupon for a free two-liter of the beverage.

Like all good deals, there’s a catch: The company wants you to commit to spending an hour on Friday nights without technology. That said, they can’t exactly check up on that one, so if you want to cheat we’re guessing you can probably get away with it.

To get a coupon, go to rootbeer.com on Tuesday and make the pledge. When you do, you’ll get a coupon that can be used to score a free two-liter of root beer that you print out and immediately use.
Unfortunately, if you want to go the float route, you’ll have to buy ice cream on your own.

Syracuse football training camp blog 2019: Tommy DeVito a bright spot on offense (DO; Graham & Black)

Syracuse football training camp opened Friday, Aug. 2. The Daily Orange beat writers, Eric Black, Andrew Graham and Josh Schafer, will keep a running tab of updates from each SU practice this summer before the Orange’s first game at Liberty on Aug. 31. Follow along here and on Twitter @DOsports.

Monday, Aug. 5
After 220 days since the end of the Syracuse’s paradigm-shifting 2018 season, the Orange opened fall camp Friday, officially beginning the 2019 season.
“This is the best time of year,” head coach Dino Babers said Monday. “I really like to consider myself an unselfish guy, but I get really selfish about people trying to take my time away from baking the cake the right way.”
On Monday morning, during the 70-minute open portion of the first practice media were allowed to attend, Babers and co. worked their players through a litany of team and positional drills.

First open period of SU’s fall camp just closed.
Only two players — r-Fr. DE Caleb Okechukwu and WR Ed Hendrix — didn’t participate in practice.

— Andrew Graham (@A_E_Graham) August 5, 2019
Practice began with the usual defensive stretching and offensive routes versus air (RVAs), where the quarterbacks warm up by throwing to receivers and running backs running undefended routes.

The offensive line then broke off with offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh. SU’s offensive line was a key component to the Orange’s 10-win season a year ago, but questions remain heading into 2019. Airon Servais, Evan Adams and rotational piece Sam Heckel return from 2018 and are listed as starters on SU’s most recent depth chart. Servais is listed as the starting center but played at tackle on Monday. Heckel and Adams are listed as the starting guards, but Heckel played center in SU’s first practice.

Ryan Alexander, a graduate-transfer tackle from Southern Alabama and Darius Tisdale, a redshirt-sophomore, also worked with the first-team offensive line, at tackle and guard, respectively. Redshirt freshman Carlos Vettorello, listed as the starting left tackle on the depth chart, played second-team center and struggled during goal line drills delivering multiple bad snaps in a row.

Top Syracuse Football Training Camp Battles (247sports.com; Guarin-Camargo)

Training camp is upon us, Orange fans. With less than a month left before SU’s season opener against Liberty (08/31), head coach Dino Babers and the rest of the Orange’s coaching staff need to start putting the best possible roster.
While some units are secure in their line ups (pass catchers, defensive backs, and defensive lineman) there are still open competitions for some of the more important positions on the team (offensive line, linebacker, etc.).
Here are the three training camp battles to look out for in the coming month.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
Last year, three of the five starting jobs were held by seniors; Cody Conway and Koda Martinmanned both tackle spots, while Aaron Roberts was at left guard. All three have graduated. Only two positions on the offensive line seem secure: center (redshirt junior Airon Servais) and right guard (redshirt senior Evan Adams).

Both tackle positions are up for grabs going into training camps. Currently, both starting nods are held by underclassmen; redshirt freshman Carlos Vettorello and freshman Anthony Red.

While both players have proven to be promising players for the Orange’s future, they both have upperclassman going for their jobs. Redshirt sophomore Darius Tisdale is a JUCO transfer from Lackawanna Community College, where his team went 11-0 and won the El Toro Bowl against Arizona Western. Lackawanna’s offense averaged 401.4 total yards & 38.5 points per game with Tisdale on the line.

As for redshirt senior Ryan Alexander, the former Southern Alabama Jaguar earned an All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention selection in 2018, leading the Jaguars’ offensive line with 46 knockdown blocks.

https://cnycentral.com/sports/orange-zone/who-will-be-this-years-breakout-star-for-syracuse-football (cnycentral.com; Tamurian & Hauswirth)

It seems like every season there's a star that seemingly comes out of nowhere for Syracuse Football.
Last year, look no further than true freshman Andre Cisco tying for the nation's lead in interceptions, and freshman kicker Andre Szmyt winning the Lou Groza Award for the best kicker in the country.

Who might have that kind of an impact this year?

Sure, winning a national award would be a bit lofty of an expectation, but inevitably there will be a new star for SU Football fans somewhere on the field.

Here are our picks:

Niko Tamurian- Tight End Aaron Hackett
Dino Babers' offense features so many weapons all over the field. Tight End is no different. Ravian Pierce was a force for two seasons and when Syracuse was in short yard situations, Pierce could be counted on for a first down or a touchdown----if his blocking wasn't opening a hole for a tailback. Pierce is gone, and my money's on Aaron Hackett to slide nicely into that role. He has the physical tools at 6'3" 234 and has shown flashes of what he can do. In an incredibly tense situation, he caught a 4th and 1 conversion pass at #2 Clemson that could've sealed the deal. That catch was called back for an ineligible man downfield but it shows Hackett has that knack for making a high pressure play. He may have only caught four passes in 2018 but one of those was for a touchdown against Pittsburgh, and isn't that the definition of a breakout star? There will be a lot of different receivers hauling passes from Tommy DeVito, but the junior from Venice, Florida could very well be Tommy's security blanket underneath. I expect a good haul of red zone targets and touchdowns from Hackett in 2019.

Matt Hauswirth- Defensive Back Evan Foster

Predicting every ACC team's final record in 2019 (247sports.com; Crawford)

It's Clemson and everybody else in the ACC this season and for the foreseeable future.
Consistently rated near the bottom in terms of Power 5 league strength, the ACC has captured two of college football's past three national titles, but until another titan emerges behind the Tigers, the league in its entirety won't be respected as a nationwide power.
Will that change in 2019?

Willie Taggart is in the middle of a slight rebuild at Florida State, while Miami takes the field this season with a first-year head coach in Manny Diaz. Then, you're looking at Virginia and Syracuse as two potential darkhorses building off last season's success in the Coastal and Atlantic, respectively.
No team in the ACC has the depth of talent Clemson possesses and most pundits are expecting another lopsided slate in the Tigers' favor as a result.
Here's a game-by-game look at every ACC team's schedule this season and a final record projection for each:
...
...
SYRACUSE ORANGE

2019 schedule: at Liberty, at Maryland, Clemson, Western Michigan, Holy Cross, at N.C. State, Pitt, at Florida State, Boston College, at Duke, at Louisville, Wake Forest
Projected final record: 10-2, 6-2
Predicted losses: Clemson, at Florida State
The skinny: Outside of the Week 3 showdown vs. Clemson, it’s hard to believe a Power 5 contender has a schedule this easy. Syracuse has two high-end pass rushers, and a veteran signal caller in Tommy Devito who has waited his turn. Road games vs. N.C. State and Florida State could be season-definers following the tussle with the Tigers.
N.C. State Wolfpack
2019 schedule: East Carolina, Western Carolina, at West Virginia, Ball State, at Florida State, Syracuse, at Boston College, at Wake Forest, Clemson, Louisville, at Georgia Tech, North Carolina
Projected final record: 7-5, 4-4
Predicted losses: at West Virginia, at Florida State, Syracuse, at Wake Forest, Clemson
The skinny: The Mountaineers won’t reach bowl eligibility this season, but they’ll beat an unproven Wolfpack team in Week 3, N.C. State’s first road contest of the season. Dave Doeren has recruited well for program standards and the Wolfpack could have one of the league's more athletic defensive fronts this fall. It'll be interesting to see who shines in fall camp and starts at quarterback as well, a three-player competition between redshirt sophomore Matt McKay, redshirt freshman Devin Leary and former Florida State player Bailey Hockman.

https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/2019/08/05/acc-opener-has-pitt-football-focused/ (pittsburghnow.com; Berger)

The Pittsburgh Panthers will start off the season with a conference opponent for the first time since 2013, their first year in the ACC. They faced off against then freshman quarterback Jameis Winston and the Florida State Seminoles, falling 41-13 to the eventual Heisman trophy winner and national champions.
Six years later, they will open the season with an ACC opponents once again. This time, they take on preseason Coastal division favorite Virginia on Aug. 31 at Heinz Field.

Head coach Pat Narduzzi says that the early season test isn’t doing anything to affect the start of training camp.
“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing,” Narduzzi said. “I think the energy is the same.”
Still, Narduzzi admits that this year’s opener may have more importance than seasons prior. Pitt has opened the last five seasons with FCS opponents, most recently Albany in 2018.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/27298043/preseason-college-football-power-rankings-anyone-stop-alabama-vs-clemson (espn)

The top of our preseason college football power rankings should surprise no one. Clemson, coming off a 44-16 throttling of Alabama in the national title game, stays on top, but the Crimson Tide are right behind at No. 2. The prospect of Clemson vs. Alabama, Part V is very real.
Among the teams looking to break up the Tigers vs. Tide monopoly on the national title are Georgia, Oklahoma (now featuring Jalen Hurts!), Ohio State (now featuring Ryan Day and Justin Fields!) and many more. See how all the contenders stack up below.

Voters: Andrea Adelson, Edward Aschoff, Kyle Bonagura, Bill Connelly, Heather Dinich, David Hale, Sam Khan Jr., Chris Low, Ivan Maisel, Myron Medcalf, Adam Rittenberg, Alex Scarborough, Mark Schlabach, Tom VanHaaren
No. 1 Clemson

The defending national champions start at No. 1 on the strength of what they have coming back on offense, starting with preseason Heisman candidate Trevor Lawrence. The true sophomore led the No. 3 offense in the country a year ago, with the Tigers averaging 527 yards per game. With Travis Etienne, Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross and three starters back on the offensive line, expect this unit to be even more dynamic. To put into greater perspective how dominant many expect the Tigers to be this season, they placed 13 of their 22 starters on the preseason all-ACC team -- eight on offense. Clemson has work to do to replace its starting defensive front, but Xavier Thomas is a star in the making. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons is a preseason All-America candidate, and the starting secondary is strong. -- Andrea Adelson
No. 2 Alabama

Whether you buy Alabama's reasons for why it lost to Clemson or not, the fact remains that this team is motivated by how it ended last season. And a hungry Nick Saban-coached team is a dangerous one. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa says he's in the best shape of his college career, and with his top four receivers back, including Biletnikoff Award winner Jerry Jeudy, the offense could be in for another monster year. -- Alex Scarborough
No. 3 Georgia

"Do more" is the motto in Athens these days as the Bulldogs are trying to get over the hump from really good to great. Standing in the way, of course, is Alabama. The offense is well-positioned, with quarterback Jake Fromm, running back D'Andre Swift and offensive tackle Andrew Thomas all returning. It's the defense, which must replace cornerback Deandre Baker and linebacker D'Andre Walker, that raises some questions. -- Scarborough
...
...
No. 21 Syracuse

The big question Dino Babers faced at media day was whether last season's success is sustainable. Much of that will depend on what he gets out of quarterback Tommy DeVito. To be sure, DeVito is a totally different player from Eric Dungey, who could not only run and throw but brought his own physical stamp to the game. DeVito has patiently waited his turn. Syracuse does return one of the best defensive-end duos in the country in Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson, along with freshman All-American safety Andre Cisco and Lou Groza winner Andre Szmyt. Babers has worked tirelessly to upgrade the talent in this program, and headed into Year 4, all signs are pointing toward a Syracuse team that is ready to be a consistent winner. -- Adelson

Louisville football: Cards look for late season surge starting with Miami (bigredlouie.com; Brown)

Will two weeks preparation be enough for Louisville to topple Miami and their new head coach down in Florida?
Coming off their late-season bye week, the Louisville football program (predicted 5-3 (3-2 ACC)) will take a trip to Coral Gables to play the Miami Hurricanes.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools since Louisville announced their arrival in the ACC with authority back in 2014, beating Miami 31-13 in front of a raucous Cardinal Stadium crowd.
We are all aware of the uncertainty surrounding the Cardinals’ season, with all of the staff and personnel changes. What you might not remember is that Miami is in a similar situation.
Right after Christmas, Miami head coach Mark Richt made a somewhat shocking decision and announced his retirement from coaching.

The school wasted no time in naming Richt’s replacement and named the inventor of the Turnover Chain, Manny Diaz, head coach only a few days later.

Diaz had served as Richt’s defensive coordinator for the last three years, so he was familiar with the program. The odd part of the new hire was that Diaz had just been announced as Temple’s new head coach two weeks prior to Richt’s announcement.

The Syracuse football squad earned some serious hardware on the Stick to Football ACC season preview show. Here are all the details.
Syracuse football has garnered a ton of national attention after their record-breaking 2018 campaign. But perhaps none are as significant as the notoriety from one of the greatest podcasts in the universe: Stick to Football.
Stick to Football is a tri-weekly Bleacher Report production podcast that covers college football, NFL, and the NFL Draft with its three hosts Connor Rogers, Matt Miller, and Mello.

Before the college football season starts, the trio has been breaking down all the conferences. On Monday they broke down the ACC.
During that conversation, the group gave out some awards and several Syracuse football players received praise.
The first award that was handed out was the defensive ACC Heisman award and Connor Rogers picked a member of the Orange:

“This conference always has great defensive line play, but Alton Robinson is really the guy who stands out to me. He had 10 sacks last year and he’s really on the rise. When you look at that defense it’s exciting and Robinson is a true double-digit sack player.”
All year long the Stick to Football podcast wants fans to tweet at them with the hashtag #DefenseForHeisman to nominate candidates.

As Patrice Rene walked into the Hyatt Hotel in Chapel Hill for fall camp move-in day last Thursday, he wore a white hard hat, a bright orange safety vest, goggles and a CAT hat attached to his Jordan Brand book bag.
He looked like a construction worker.

“All work,” he said, showing his outfit to a camera recording him.

As the Tar Heels prepare for the 2019 football season, Rene, a 6-2, 208-pound senior cornerback from Ontario, Canada, says he’s all about business.
Rene came up with the idea to dress up after watching some of his favorite NFL players do the same for their training camps. He bought most of his outfit at Walmart and some of it at Lowe’s.
Rene said by dressing up as a construction worker, he was trying to send a message to his teammates that he’s not there to mess around.
“I had a different attitude,” Rene said Saturday. “It’s all work, no play. This is the last one, so this is all or nothing for me.”

Still, his teammates couldn’t help but laugh.

The Pitt football program held the fourth practice of its 2019 training camp on Monday morning at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side of Pittsburgh.

Head coach Pat Narduzzi met with reporters prior to the session, while graduate transfers Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Kylan Johnson and Nolan Ulizio and quarterbacks Jeff George Jr. and Nick Patti all answered questions from the media after the workout.

Head Coach Pat Narduzzi

Opening Statement:

"Monday morning, practice number four and second day in the shells. Yesterday was our first day in shells so it's always interesting. I don't think the defense tackled like they needed to, which is usually part of what they've done all summer. A lot of things we're trying to fix right now, which is a product of what I call the summer skelly, you know, them out there coaching themselves. They're not very good coaches; they're good players and good athletes. Tackling needed to improve. I was impressed with some of the things the offense did in the run game as well as the passing game. Today will be an interesting day. Today will be a little bit more competitive. They get a day off tomorrow, so they kind of know that ahead of time. We'll be out for about an hour and 10 minutes and get after it."

The Dude of WV, part 597...

From the twitter account of Christopher Lambert (aka @theDudeofWV):
Since I’ve already let the cat out of the bag I will summarize to context of the article.
— Christopher Lambert (@theDudeofWV) August 5, 2019
1. The Big 12 must expand to take advantage of emerging markets. Expansion is the only way the Big 12 can keep pace and maintain their revenue position.
2. The common misconception of instability surrounding the Big 12 is a barrier to expansion.
3. By extending their base deal with ESPN and the GoR to 2035 the Big 12 puts itself in position to widen the revenue gap with the Pac 12 and dispel any thoughts of instability thereby making the Big 12 an attractive option to the Pac 12.
4. The Big 12 must finalize the ESPN/GoR before the Pac 12’s TV deal expires.
5. Several Pac 12 schools have expressed interest.
5. The Big 12 is not interested in a scheduling alliance witn the Pac 12 at this time.
6. The Big 12 is prepared to expand with any combo of UCF/BYU/USF. ESPN has told the Big 12 expansion with UCF/BYU/USF is acceptable but P5 schools are preferred.
7. The Big 12 expects an increase of magnitude with expansion and the addition of at least two broadcast partners other than ESPN. CBS, DAZN, Hulu and Apple being the most likely.
8. I have documents in hand detailing the commitment of both UT and OU to the Big 12 and their agreeing to extend the GoR.
9. The resignation of Gallogly at OU has been the only issue causing a delay.
10. I will publish the product of both FoIA requests with my article. Unedited, in full...

ACCN Rumors - 8/6/19
When it comes to the ACC Network: although no large distributors have signed up recently, the prevailing rumors have at least turned more positive...

July 18, 2019
From SportsBusinessDaily: Sources: Comcast, Cox, Dish Unlikely To Carry ACC Net At LaunchSources said that it looks unlikely that Comcast, Cox and Dish Network will have deals in place by the ACC Network's Aug. 22 launch. Their affiliate deals for all Disney networks don't expire for several years, and it is unlikely they will cut a deal for ACC Net on a standalone basis...
August 5, 2019
From SyracuseFan.com's "ACC Network Thread"
Q: Any word regarding Comcast?
Chris02M: yes when i was on chat just now they said an agreement is close
Hopefully they weren't just jerking his chain to get him to stay (which would only work for so long if they don't, you know, actually get the network!)
From AllSportsDiscussion: Perspective on Mack Brown plus ACC Network Update from ESPN/Fox Talent Spotter @billgarrity3
Q: Should ACC fans be concerned that some of the larger carriers have yet to sign on to ACC Network or do you expect most if it not all will ready by the launch?
A: No. There may be a couple late to sign up, inconveniencing some, but I doubt it will last. I have U-verse and that may be a problem. AT&T has planned to phase it out and push those customers to DirecTV since they bought the latter. Dish is building out a 5G network and may not add anything due to that distraction. Other than that, Disney knows how to deal with carriers.
If U-verse is on the way out, you may want to switch anyway. As for Dish: they'll need to compete with DirecTV - which means they'll need all of the sports channels.

Clemson QB led Tigers to undefeated season as a freshman

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/the-19-compelling-storylines-that-will-lead-us-through-the-2019-college-football-season/ (cbssports.com; Dodd)

All that sweat equity, so little time. Year 150 of college football commences this week with 130 teams in camp competing for four spots in the College Football Playoff.

Are two of those slots already filled?

That's just one subject we will explore as we look ahead to the 19 top storylines of 2019. The offseason has been filled with more money (for coaches), more freedom (for players) and talk about more records (to be broken).
Does all of it mean a lot more of the same? Clemson and Alabama start out the season ranked 1-2 in some order. But a century and half after those roustabouts from Princeton and Rutgers scrummed, some basics still apply.
Primarily, you have to play the games.
1. A parody of parity: Let's get this out of the way early. For the second straight season (at least), Alabama and Clemson have separated themselves from the pack. Clemson is an SEC power that just happens to reside in the shallowest ACC in recent memory. Alabama and Georgia have transformed the SEC into a two-team league. One or the other between the Tigers and Crimson Tide has won the last four national championships. But that's not the scariest thing. No league that plays nine conference games (Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12) has won a championship in the CFP era. So yeah, it might be a good idea to take Bama-Clemson vs. the field. The SEC and ACC are the only Power Fives that continue to play eight-game conference seasons.
2. Alabama-Clemson V? It sure looks like it. Clemson has a quarterback who looks like he could play in the NFL (Trevor Lawrence). Alabama has a quarterback who led FBS in passer rating in his first full year as a starter (Tua Tagovailoa). Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney have combined for seven of the last 10 national championships. Clemson's regular-season schedule seems so Charmin soft that the Tigers not running the slate undefeated at 13-0 should be considered an upset. Bama has the revenge motive. If the two teams don't meet in the postseason for the fifth year in a row, consider that an upset as well.

https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2019-08-05/college-football-power-five-acc-sec-pac-12-big-ten (latimes.com; McCollough)

Which underachieving Power Five division will assert itself?

When the ACC added Miami and Virginia Tech in 2004 and Boston College in 2005 to become a 12-team conference, leading to the creation of two divisions, the assumption was that the Hokies and Hurricanes would annually battle for Coastal division supremacy and the winner would face Bobby Bowden’s dominant Florida State program in a high-stakes league championship game.

At the time, there was every reason to believe that was fair. Miami had played in back-to-back BCS title games in 2001 and ’02 and had won five national championships dating to 1983. Frank Beamer had built Virginia Tech into a consistent winner, and the Hokies had even played in the national championship game in 1999.
Last season’s scenario — a mediocre Pittsburgh team that finished 7-7 won the Coastal and was all that stood in the way of Atlantic division winner Clemson and the College Football Playoff — would have been unthinkable 15 years ago.

But since joining the ACC, Miami has compiled just one 10-win season, and Virginia Tech has reached double digits only once in seven years. With Manny Diaz taking over for Mark Richt at Miami and Justin Fuente struggling to elevate Virginia Tech, it looks like another year of Clemson having the easiest road to the playoff.
In the realignment era, setting up even divisions has been a challenge across the country.

The Big Ten’s West division has been hurt by Nebraska’s irrelevance, and Wisconsin looks underwhelming after falling flat last season with a No. 4 preseason ranking. Northwestern represented the West in the league title game, which is telling.

Here in the Pac-12, a down USC has made the Pac-12 South a bit of a punchline. Utah won the South last year and was surprisingly picked by the media to win the league this year.

Much of this is cyclical, and college football’s three underachieving Power Five divisions all need the same thing: their name programs to play to their traditional standing.

The Trojans have the talent to take back the South from Utah, but the smart bet is for the Big Ten West to make the most progress this season.

Nebraska is a trendy pick to have a bounce-back year under second-year coach Scott Frost, who will attempt to bring modern offensive football to America’s Heartland by unleashing sophomore quarterback Adrian Martinez. Wisconsin’s program has a strong backbone and returns All-American running back Jonathan Taylor to carry the load. Even Kirk Ferentz’s steady Iowa Hawkeyes have the look of a top-25 team.

Syracuse University is back on top as the No. 1 party school in America.

The Princeton Review released its list of 2019 party school rankings on Monday, and SU topped the list for the first time since 2014. Syracuse has been in the top 10 for eight years in a row, coming in fourth place for the past two years.

In other party categories, Syracuse ranked No. 2 for “lots of hard liquor," No. 8 for “lots of beer,” No. 19 for “reefer madness" and No. 18 for Greek life. SU also scored highly thanks to Syracuse basketball and football fans, ranking No. 3 in the nation for school spirit (“students pack the stadiums”).

In other categories, Syracuse ranked No. 7 for intramural sports, No. 1 for best college newspaper, No. 6 for best college radio station and No. 11 for most politically active students.
The 2019 party schools list also includes one other Central New York college: Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. Colgate came in at No. 7 this year, up from ninth in 2018, making its fifth year in a row in the top 10.
Colgate alumnus Jay Chandrasekhar, who formed the Broken Lizard comedy troupe with friends while attending the Hamilton school, often credits Colgate's hard-partying reputation for his success. Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske co-wrote and starred in "Beerfest" and the "Super Troopers" movies.
