Welcome to Women's Equality Day!

Women's Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.

SU News

http://dailyorange.com/2019/08/3-storylines-syracuse-entering-2019-season/ DO; Graham)

Syracuse wrapped up fall camp Friday and has turned its attention toward Week 1 opponent Liberty.
Through four weeks of camp, SU’s defense maintained its claim as the team’s best unit while the offense, still determining the hierarchy of reps, comes into focus. As the Orange finally enter a game week — opening the season at Liberty on Aug. 31 — for the first time all season, here are three storylines from fall camp.

A dominant defense

For the first time in the Dino Babers era at Syracuse, the defense is poised to be the team’s better unit — at least in the beginning of the season.

“I saw a defense dominate the entire scrimmage,” Babers said on Aug. 7. “If you’ve got a good defense, suppose you have a chance to win, right?”

Headlining the Orange’s defense are seniors Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman, a defensive end duo that each delivered 10 sacks a season ago. Robinson and Coleman’s success rushing the edge was predicated on nose tackle Chris Slayton, now a member of the New York Giants, drawing double teams in the middle.

Syracuse doesn’t have an immediate plug-and-play option to replace Slayton. The likeliest path to replacing Slayton’s production is rotating defensive linemen in the middle. Upperclassmen Josh Black, McKinley Williams and Kenneth Ruff contended for reps in camp, while defensive ends Brandon Berry and Kingsley Jonathan could also rotate inside at times. The development of options in the middle bears extra importance now, since Williams is out indefinitely with a left lower leg injury.

“I’d be very disappointed if we don’t have the same type of production out of those three guys together that we got out of (Slayton),” Babers said on Aug. 5.

The 2018 Syracuse football campaign was one that brought its fanbase back in time. Last season marked the first time since 2001 that the Orange reached ten wins in a season and that campaign also marked the last time SU was ranked in the national polls. Syracuse wrapped up Dino Babers’ third season at the controls with a 10-3 mark, a win over West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl, and the #15 ranking in both polls.

The team started the 2018 campaign with four straight victories, grabbing headlines in week three by thumping Florida State at the Carrier Dome, 30-7. The Orange then traveled to Clemson and held a 23-13 lead early in the fourth quarter, but wilted, allowing the eventual national champions a pair of touchdowns, the latter with 41 seconds left.

SU dropped their second straight road game the following week, an overtime loss at Pittsburgh, but responded with another four-game winning streak. The offense propelled the Orange in that span, averaging 44 points per contest, including a pair of 50-plus point explosions.

Syracuse fell to 8-3 after being routed in Yankee Stadium by #3 Notre Dame, but bounced back to close their schedule with a 42-21 win at Boston College. The team received a berth in the Camping World Bowl and scored the final 17 points of the game to pull out a 34-18 victory over West Virginia.

That double-digit win campaign has reinvigorated the football program. In spite of the loss of do-everything quarterback Eric Dungey (11,333 career yards of total offense and 92 career touchdowns good for first and second in school history, respectively), more good things are expected of the team, which was voted #22 in both the AP and coaches polls prior to the season.

The team was voted second in the Atlantic Division in the ACC Media Preseason Poll behind Clemson, garnering a pair of first-place votes both in their division and in the conference as a whole. The Orange return 14 starters overall, including eight on defense. Senior defensive ends Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson each logged ten sacks last season while sophomore free safety Andre Cisco received All-American honors both following last season and heading into this campaign.

2019 Syracuse football predictions: Will Orange dethrone Clemson in ACC? (PS; Mink)

The Syracuse football team will open its 2019 season next week at Liberty.
The Orange is coming off a breakthrough, 10-3 season under head coach Dino Babers.
Now, everyone is asking: Can SU take the next step in his fourth season and unseat Clemson from the top of the ACC mountain?
Our football staff tackles this question and others in our annual season predictions.
Feel free to come back to these picks throughout the season and make fun of us for what we got wrong.
In fact, someone was so bad last year, predicting SU to finish 5-7 and Michigan to win the national championship, we didn't invite him back this year.
You can also make your own predictions in the comments section.

Brent Axe: SU record
9-3
Syracuse has enough depth at running back, wide receiver and on defense combined with a favorable schedule to make a nine-win season a reality, and I will put my chips in the middle of the table based on that.
That said, I have three concerns about my pick. One is that the offensive line needs time to gel. Two, I have real concerns about the backup quarterback situation behind Tommy DeVito. Three is simply that college football is weird. Things that sound crazy in August become reality in November. Like, you know, a Syracuse team picked to finish last winning 10 games.

Stephen Bailey: SU record
9-3
I'll stick with my early prediction from April as not much has changed. The Orange's offensive line might need some time to mesh -- especially with center Sam Heckel missing time during camp -- and the linebackers will have to learn from inevitable early season slip-ups. But team depth is at its strongest in the Dino Babers era and this year's schedule is by far the lightest. Aside from facing reigning national champion Clemson, SU shouldn't be a significant underdog in any contest this fall.

Nate Mink: SU record
10-2
Nothing has changed since the spring. If Syracuse is healthy, it has the second-best roster in the ACC.

https://heavy.com/entertainment/2019/08/tim-green-wife-illyssa-green/ (heavy.com)

Tim Green‘s wife, Illyssa Green, was described as “a force just as bullish” as the former NFL defensive end, best-selling author and lawyer.

Green is fighting Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.. His story was aired on 60 Minutes, which received two Emmy nominations this year.
They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in May. They have five children: Thane, Tessa, Troy, Tate and Ty. The family has lived in Skaneateles, New York since 1993.

Illyssa Wolkoff met her future husband, Tim Green, at Syracuse University. He was soon drafted to the Atlanta Falcons.
The couple has been together through the highs and lows of life. When the two first met, Tim Green was struggling with the prospect of finding his birth mother. He was raised by loving parents, but struggled with feelings of inadequacy and strongly desired to understand his background. She encouraged him to find his birth mother, saying the quest would have a happy ending.
Green was eventually diagnosed with ALS, and his wife is fighting the battle alongside him.

In football circles, Tim Green has always been known as a Renaissance man. He was an All-American defensive lineman at Syracuse University and an English major who graduated magna cum laude. He spent eight years sacking quarterbacks for the Atlanta Falcons and picked up a law degree in his spare time. And during a decade in the broadcast booth for Fox Sports, he started writing books. Six became bestsellers. Then, last September, the man who seemed to be able to do anything sent us news he could no longer hide. He is suffering from ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, one of a growing number of NFL players to receive that diagnosis. His body is starting to fail and his voice has lost its timbre, but his story is even more compelling now than it was when we first met him back in 1996, upon the publication of his football memoir "The Dark Side of the Game."

Syracuse University handling Carrier Dome name change all wrong (itlh; Arrigo)

Syracuse University has failed to admit that football and basketball venue name of the Carrier Dome is dead, despite all indications that there will be a name change.

Earlier this week, Syracuse University removed all mentions of the word “Carrier” from their football media guide. Despite the media catching this, school officials have not come out and addressed the situation. The Dome is getting a massive facelift over the next year, and with that, it seems like signs are pointing toward the school looking for a new company to buy the naming rights to the arena.
However, Syracuse University won’t acknowledge these actions publicly, and they are making it seem like the name Carrier Dome never existed. Former All-American Dwight Freeney’s famous quote about the Carrier Dome is now misquoted.

Per Syracuse. com:

“There’s no place like the Carrier Dome,” previous media guides attributed to Freeney. “It’s the loudest place. Nobody liked coming to play us there. You can talk to any of the guys in the NFL right now who played there and they’ll tell you. The Dome was the worst place to come to play.”
The 2019 version uses the same quote but has eliminated the word Carrier, a trend that carries through the entire 254-page book.
They even removed the word Carrier from their timeline dedicated to the creation of the Dome.
According to Syracuse.com, Athletic Director John Wildhack said to a reporter in April that eliminating the word “Carrier” from numerous guides and websites was not a message to the company. He deflected the question to say:

“I think our fans, you know, they ask, ‘Are you going to the Dome today?’ I’ve been a fan for 30-plus years. I’m an alumni. They say, ‘I’m going back to Syracuse, we’re going to the Dome for a game.’”
Despite the media beating the University to the story, neither Wildhack or any school officials have addressed this, despite the writing on the wall.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/08/23/syracuse-football-moe-neal-become-orange-rushing-legend/ (itlh; Lee)

Moe Neal heads into his senior season on the verge of becoming a top 10 rusher for a Syracuse football program with a storied history of running backs.

Syracuse football running back Moe Neal came to the Orange prior to the 2016 campaign and has quietly rushed his way into the Syracuse record books.

2016 was a significant year in Syracuse football program history — not for the success on the field, as the Orange went 4-8 for the second consecutive season — but because of the people who came to campus that year.

Including Neal, Syracuse brought in fellow recruits including Sam Heckel, Rex Culpepper, Sean Riley, Evan Foster, and Kendall Coleman, among others. In total, this recruiting class, when healthy, projects 11 guys to be listed as a starter or first backup on this year’s Cuse depth chart.

2016 is also the year that brought current coach Dino Babers to the Salt City. Babers told everyone to be patient that it would take time, but after three years on campus, Syracuse has seen their first real taste of success in many years with a 10-3 season in 2018.
Over the last three years, the Orange have put up some historic offensive numbers, with the second-highest three year scoring stretch in school history, averaging 386.67 points per season (1996-1998 Syracuse averaged 452 points per season) including the first time in history the Orange scored 500 points in a season with 523 in 2018.
Most of the headlines were generated, reasonably so, towards former Orange quarterback Eric Dungey, and even Lou Groza award winner Andre Szymt after he led the country in points per game at 11.6 in 2018. While his importance has overlooked or his impact in the turnaround, Neal’s career statistical output has been overshadowed during his time at Syracuse.

Neal currently is 5th in program history with 5.44 yards per carrier (minimum of 200 career carries) according to the Syracuse Football 2019 Media Guide. in total yards, Neal sits at 1,714 yards after compiling 869 yards on the ground last season on 155 attempts.

Going into his final campaign if healthy Neal is expected to be RB1 for the Cuse with a heavy load of carries coming his way and only needing another 748 yards to secure a position in the top 10 for rushing yards in team history.

https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2019/08/26/clemson-football-georgia-tech-offense-opener-acc/2100355001/ (greenvilleonline.com; Robinson)

for gbo

First-year Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins would be in good shape if he were preparing for a seven-on-seven tournament.
Through the previous decade under Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech utilized a triple-option offense with agile quarterbacks, speedy receivers and an array of dynamic running backs.

Specializing in cut-blocking

However, in the run-heavy scheme, Johnson’s offensive linemen specialized in cut-blocking and were often undersized compared to their peers in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude does not yet have all the pieces to fit his pro-style puzzle. Tech did not even have a single tight end when the new staff arrived in Atlanta.

Patenaude spent much of the offseason assessing his players' strengths. Now, he must tailor his scheme to fit them, even if that means deviating from his preferred plan. Thus, no one outside the program is certain what the Yellow Jackets will run Thursday night in the season opener at Clemson.

Including Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.

“Who knows?” Swinney said. “There's a lot we don't know about our self yet, but there's a lot we don't know about them. It's that way every year, every opener. You have to get ready schematically for what you think they might do.”
Sleeping Giant: Geoff Collins, Georgia Tech could soon give Clemson a real ACC rival
To composite at least a hypothesis for what Tech will run, Clemson coaches have studied film of Tech’s spring game and footage from Collins’ previous school, Temple.

Florida Football: 3 overreactions from season-opening win over Miami (satrudayblitz.com; Pryor)

1. Miami is headed toward a disastrous season
Before we bench Jarren Williams, fire Manny Diaz and destine the Hurricanes to the bottom 10, let’s pump the brakes for a moment.

First, they only have one tough road game (FSU) and their ACC crossovers are Florida State and Louisville, avoiding both Clemson and Syracuse.

The Hurricanes have a lot to work on, especially on offense. Jarren Williams needs to learn how to throw the ball away instead of taking the sack. The offensive line has to protect him better and consistently open holes for DeeJay Dallas and the run game. Keep in mind, however, Florida didn’t run away from this game, and the offense didn’t give up (although Florida gifted them plenty of penalties and turnovers).

Let’s keep in mind that we are talking about the ACC Coastal division. It’s as wide open as any division in the Power Five. Miami is super young, but it’s also super talented, and that defense kept the ‘Canes in the game until the very end. They have to score off turnovers. They had four turnovers, yet they could not capitalize off of them. That’s the learning curve of a young team.

They should be able to “out-athlete” Duke, Georgia Tech and even Virginia. Are they young? Yes. Does the offense have a learning curve? Yes. Their offense will keep them in games and give their offense chances to score; their offense just needs to take advantage.

Smith-Williams enters the 2019 season as the #3 Freak on The Athletic’s annual list. 2018 was his first year as a starter, tallying 9.5 tackles for loss and 6 sacks. He graduated in December with a degree in Business Supply Chain Management, and earned All-ACC Academic honors.

McCloud played in 11 games in 2018, and started in each one, after starting in 8 games total as a Freshman and Sophomore. His 8 pass breakups ranked 9th in the ACC last year, and he also intercepted 2 passes. McCloud’s 51 tackles ranked 4th on the team last year.

Morehead started all 13 games for NC State last year, and is entering his third year as a starter for the Wolfpack. He was the 2nd leading tackler last season, tallying 81 stops.

On Second Thought: UM vs UF 8/25/19

Having had a chance to look at film, statistics, etc., I'd like to give some "second thought" observations...

1. Miami QB Jarren Williams has potential. If he ever gets some pass protection, watch out! He looked good (214 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT) despite 10 sacks.
2. Speaking of pass pro, either the Gators defensive line is going to be dominant (possible) or the Canes need work on the O-line (probable).
3. Miami RB Deejay Dallas is the TRUTH! That kid looked good running over (and out-running) Florida defenders. Again, he needs better blocking.
4. The Canes defense looked pretty good.
5. Florida won special teams - the Canes need to improve there as well.

Gifts and commitments to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, Georgia Tech athletics’ fundraising arm, totaled a record-setting $53.5 million for the 2019 fiscal year, GT athletics announced on Friday.

The $53.5 million raised from July 2018-June 2019 far exceeded the A-T Fund’s previous single-year record of $46 million, set in FY 2000. Single-year giving to the A-T Fund hadn’t surpassed $30 million since 2009.

NYS Fair 2019 attendance continues to soar on Day 5 (PS; O'Toole)

As the price of admission to the fair dropped this weekend, attendance continued soared.

“Another sunny day of mild late-summer weather and another stunning crowd: 119,301,” fair spokesman Dave Bullard said. “That’s 17,711 better than a year ago and good for second best ever for the first Sunday. Every day this year so far has either been the best or second best ever.”

The record attendance for Day 5 remains at 123,206, set two years ago.

In an effort to draw more people to the state fair this year, the fair lowered its admission price on weekends to just $1. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the price drop after the fair set daily attendance records on two of the first three days.
Fair officials also announced on Sunday that parking in the Willis Lot, one of the new parking lots at the New York State Fair this year, will be free for the remainder of the 2019 fair.

After the first five days, the 2019 fair attendance is 432 more than it was in 2018, Bullard said. Last year, a record-breaking 1,279,010 people went to the fair.

One big draw on Sunday night was the Dropkick Murphys concert, which drew an estimated 30,200 people at Chevy Court. Earlier Sunday, about 2,500 came out to see rising country star Jimmie Allen at Chevy Court and roughly 5,000 people watched Pop Evil at the Experience Stage.
...

NC State does the same thing...not to mention a slew of other schools.

Hugh Freeze's Syracuse Press Conference:

Unfortunately, I'm really impressed by this guy.

Grudgingly agree.

You can say things about his character and past actions, but - as a football coach, he seems to be really, REALLY on the ball.

The fact that he's been away from the program due to his personal health issues, is probably another thing in our favor, but the bottom line is - nobody really knows what to expect from Liberty on either side of the ball, so that's a tad unnerving.

We have the better athletes.
We have more of them.
We have established coaches and systems in all 3 facets of the game.

Those things should be enough to prevail, and ideally by at least whatever the spread ends up being at kickoff.
