Welcome to Chop Suey Day!

This is a day for the American Chinese dish, chop suey. It usually consists of a meat—such as pork, beef, shrimp, chicken, or fish—and eggs, which are quickly cooked in a sauce with vegetables like cabbage, celery, and bean sprouts. It is usually served with rice, but stir-fried noodles may be added. In Cantonese, a Chinese language, its name literally means "odds and ends". There are so many conflicting stories of its origin, that no one really knows where it came from. Most believe it was invented by Chinese Americans. Some say it was made by those working on the transcontinental railroad, or for miners by a Chinese cook in San Francisco. Some claim it was made by the chef of a Chinese official who was visiting the United States in 1896, or that the official wandered into a Chinese restaurant and the chef there came up with it for him using leftovers. A few have also claimed that it is based off a dish from Taishan, a Chinese county in Guangdong province. No matter where it got its start, it is now a prominent food in American Chinese cuisine.

Syracuse football’s Nike jerseys delayed over production error (PS; Burrows)

Syracuse football fans will have to wait a little longer to purchase a jersey featuring the team’s signature orange as the primary color.

Syracuse AD John Wildhack told syracuse.com’s Brent Axe on the Syracuse Sports Podcast Wednesday that the orange and white jerseys have been delayed until later this year because of a production error with Nike.

“There was a production issue with the orange and the white in terms of what was delivered,” Wildhack said. "They got the font wrong on the numbers – and this happens, so this is not unique to Syracuse, it happens in the industry. So we went back and we said this is unacceptable.

“I’m not going to put anything that’s not authentic on the market for our fans. We will have the orange and the white for sale, probably – they should be in sometime in October. Not ideal, but again, we want to make sure what we put on the market is truly authentic.”

https://cnycentral.com/sports/college/season-predictions-our-panel-of-experts-on-syracuse-footballs-2019-record (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

It's finally here, Syracuse Football season ends the most anticipated offseason of the new century and begins the 2019 campaign Saturday at Liberty.

There's plenty of reason for optimism and it reflects in the highest overall preseason record predictions we've had on The Orange Zone since the show launched in 2013.

Damien Rhodes: 8-4

Damien, our Orange Zone co-host and Syracuse running back from 2002-2005 cites the potential for trap games. Maryland, Florida State, NC State, Duke and even Liberty road games have the top-10 Orange rusher concerned. It doesn't mean they would lose all those games, there's just reason to be wary. Damien looks for road growth as Tommy DeVito grows into the starting quarterback role

"The schedule is set up for a great season on how it is segmented" said Rhodes.

Certainly, we all think an even higher win total is possible, especially if the Orange can beat Clemson. But the reality of ACC Football is every team will be tough and looking to score their own signature win against the Orange.

Niko Tamurian: 8-4

Like Damien, I think the potential is there for a truly magical season with a magical record. To have those win totals as expectations and not hopes, however, is a disservice to the hardworking kids on the team. Especially in August. The days of scratching and clawing to try and get six wins are over, but that doesn't mean the ACC Atlantic schedule suddenly became a cakewalk. Florida State is recharging and ready to prove doubters wrong---a game at their place was never going to be easy, either. Week 2 at Maryland is a very concerning matchup with a team that has a Power-5 level talent. Dino Babers told me last week the first two games concern him because there's such limited film he can watch on those squads early in the season, especially with both Liberty and Maryland breaking in new head coaches.

The four games I'm concerned about the most: at Maryland, Clemson, at NC State and at Florida State.
8-4, in my opinion is a reasonable expectation in the first year of Tommy DeVito as the starter. That record could very well still get them into the Orange Bowl, which happens if Clemson goes to the College Football Playoff and Syracuse is the next-highest ranked team from the ACC.

Syracuse football has announced their first uniform combination of the year vs the Liberty Flames in Week 1. Here are all the details.
The season opener for the Syracuse football squad is rapidly approaching against the Liberty Flames, one of the most anticipated aspects of the Week 1 matchup has finally been revealed.
Since the announcement of a new contract with Nike for athletics’ apparel and the subsequent announcement new uniform announcement, seeing the look for the Orange a leading factor in excitement for the matchup with Liberty.

Syracuse announced Wednesday via their Twitter account (@CUSEFootball) they will be heading into the opener with the new white jerseys with “Orange,” written across the chest in what else but Orange. Plus even more orange with the orange helmet and pants as well.
This has been a favorite amongst Orange Nation in regards to the away threads. A clean look for SU that has routinely popped, even without the best of uniform design. With so many universities claiming to control the color Syracuse dawns as it’s identity from, it is a refreshing change to see it be to continue to be embraced and shown off, especially right of the bat.

First look at our new unis this weekend.
— Syracuse Football (@CuseFootball) August 28, 2019

With all the white and orange, Syracuse didn’t forget the accent of blue. The blue was a little too upfront on the past renditions of the uniform highlights the orange jersey, at the collar with an orange block “S,” and stripes down the white pant leg and Nike Swoosh on each.
Do you approve the Week 1 @CuseFootball uniform vs Liberty this week? #Orange #OITNF

Twenty-one years.

It's been more than two decades since Donovan McNabb led Syracuse to an Orange Bowl berth in 1998. Back then the Orange Bowl was apart of the Bowl Championship Series, now it's one of the New Year's Six Bowl games.
The goal for every program is to land one of the four spots in the playoffs which will be hosted at the Peach Bowl and Fiesta Bowl at the end of the 2019 season. However, the New Year's Six games are a worthy consolation prizes and include the Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl.

Fresh off a 10-win season, the Orange are ranked No. 22 in the Amway Coaches Poll and Associated Press Top 25. When was the the last time Syracuse began the season ranked in national polls? Also 1998 under McNabb.
For players and fans alike the preseason hype is a different reality than the last few years.

"You can tell there's a lot of excitement. People are starting to notice it's not a basketball school only and that football is here and it's here to stay," starting quarterback Tommy DeVito said.
His comments will be tested as the Orange will enter 2019 as one of the hunted as opposed to being a hunter. After Clemson, the ACC is wide open and with playmakers on each side of the ball, the path to another 10-win season is certainly manageable.
However, in order to reach that number or any of the New Year's Six, the Orange will need to navigate these five games that could make or break the season:

Maryland (Sept. 7)

Expecting to see Clemson here? Current Illinois coach Lovie Smith once said don't let one opponent beat you twice and that rings true for 'Cuse with Maryland. The Terrapins may have only finished 5-7 last season, but they're an opponent the Orange can't afford to look ahead against, especially with new head coach Mike Locksley.

Remember, Locksley was the offensive coordinator for Alabama's record-breaking offense last season and he'll try to emulate some of that success at Maryland. Anthony McFarland is one of the most underrated running backs in the Big Ten after rushing for 1,034 yards.

Virginia Tech transfer Josh Jackson Jr. will provide Locksley with a quarterback he can trust. Injuries derailed Jackson last season, but as a redshirt freshman he threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. This could be a tough test for the Syracuse defense.

https://www.mlive.com/broncos/2019/08/predicting-wmus-2019-football-season-game-by-game.html (mlive.com; Nothaft)

Five new assistant coaches indicate Tim Lester was ready to shake things up inside the Western Michigan football program after the Broncos sputtered to a 1-4 finish last fall.
Two losses against Top 25 teams to start the season can be excused, but a late season collapse that included a trio of embarrassing defeats to Ohio, Toledo and a 4-8 Ball State team, well, that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Defensive coordinator Tim Daoust was fired the next day, and despite reclaiming some momentum with a win in the regular-season finale against rival Northern Illinois, WMU made sweeping changes in the offseason with five new assistant coaching hires.
The Broncos enter the season with a new-look staff, but a lot of familiar faces on the field, and that's bringing some excitement into 2019.
The Mid-American Conference coaches and media members both picked WMU to finish second in the division, and if the Broncos can stay healthy, there's a good chance the Week 14 showdown with NIU will have a trip to Ford Field hanging in the balance.
But before we look too far ahead, let's take a look at a possible path for WMU with predictions for all 12 regular season games.

Week 1: vs. Monmouth
A far cry from 2017's opener at USC or last year's Week 1 matchup with nationally ranked Syracuse, WMU's matchup with Monmouth sets up nicely for the Broncos, who will have a chance to see how their new defense stacks up against quarterback Kenji Bahar, the Big South's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and a watch list selection for the Football Championship Subdivision's Heisman equivalent. Bahar's ability as a passer will be a welcome challenge for WMU's cornerbacks, but after sending two receivers to the New York Giants this offseason, Monmouth lacks an elite playmaker on the outside that could give Dee Eskridge or Anton Curtis real problems.

The Hawks have a trio of solid FCS running backs in Pete Guerriero, Juwon Farri and goal-line specialist Devell Jones, but WMU was strong against the run last year, and shouldn't have too much trouble with Monmouth's ground game.
Defensively, Monmouth will struggle to contain the Broncos, as the Hawks are coming off a season in which they recorded just 11 turnovers and 11 sacks. Running backs LeVante Bellamy and Davon Tucker should feast on the Hawks' defense, and quarterback Jon Wassink should start building chemistry with the Broncos' young receiving corps. At the same time, don't expect WMU's offense to pull out too many tricks with Michigan State on deck.
A key matchup will be the Broncos' pass rush vs. Bahar. If guys like Ali Fayad and Ralph Holley can pressure the pocket, there's almost no way Monmouth keeps the game close. If Monmouth goes max-protect and Bahar has all day to throw, we'll learn a lot about WMU's cornerback situation.
Prediction: WMU 45, Monmouth 17

...
...
Week 4: at Syracuse
After hosting the Orange for an exciting Week 1 matchup in 2018, WMU heads to the Carrier Dome, where Tim Lester served as a Syracuse assistant from 2013-15.
Quarterback Eric Dungey and giant receiver Jamal Custis have moved on to the NFL -- much to the relief of WMU fans -- but Syracuse still features some potent offensive weapons, including running back Moe Neal, speedy slot receiver Sean Riley and a pair of preseason second team All-ACC linemen. While quarterback Tommy DeVito struggled against WMU in relief of Dungey last year, the former four-star pocket passer is now in his second season with the Syracuse offense and should be much improved this time around.
The break-neck speed of Dino Babers' no-huddle offense could also give WMU some problems, as defensive coordinator Lou Esposito has stated a preference for rotating heavily along the defensive line and at linebacker, but without time to shuffle guys in and out between plays, the Broncos could get stuck in some unfavorable matchups for extended periods of time.
As unique as Syracuse's offense is, the Orange's strength this year should be its defense, which returns eight starters, including preseason All-American safety Andre Cisco, and preseason first team All-ACC defensive ends Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson.

https://studentunionsports.com/acc-football/syracuse-football-season-opener-what-to-expect-from-liberty/lowens (studentunionsports.com; Owens)

Syracuse football opens their season on the road once again this year. In 2018, it was a 55-42 opening win in Western Michigan that kickstarted the Orange’s 10-3 campaign. This time around, Syracuse travels down to Lynchburg, Virginia, to take on the Liberty Flames. This will be the first season Liberty will be competing fully at the FBS level as an independent. This means the Flames will now be bowl eligible as opposed to last season.

But just because the Flames are new to the FBS level does not mean they don’t have the talent to compete. Liberty went 6-6 last season, including wins over Old Dominion, New Mexico, Troy, and New Mexico State. These may not be powerhouse FBS schools, but Liberty won’t be a cakewalk for the Orange. Liberty is now led by head coach Hugh Freeze, who was most recently at Ole Miss.
The Offense

The Flames are led by veteran QB Stephen Calvert, who threw for 3,068 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. However, he struggled against Power Five opponents. In two games against Auburn and Virginia, Calvert went a combined 24-55 passing with 228 yards, zero touchdowns, and five interceptions. Syracuse’s pass rush and elite secondary should have no issues solving Calvert, who doesn’t leave the pocket much. The weapons for Calvert at receiver include Antonio Gandy-Golden (1,037 yards, 10 touchdowns) and DJ Stubbs (631 yards), along with returning eight of their nine top pass catchers from 2018. This return of experience should help the Flames this season, but if the Orange can solve Gandy-Golden, the receiving core gets weaker from there.

In terms of rushing, Liberty has a trio that gets it done. Frankie Hickson went for 1,032 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, while Peytton Pickett added 457 yards and 9 touchdowns of his own. The trio is rounded out by Maine transfer Josh Mack, the FCS’ leading rusher in 2017. If the Orange secondary is lockdown early, expect Liberty to pound the ball and test that front seven.

The Defense

Everyone is anxious to see what the Orange offense can do now under the command of Tommy DeVito, myself included. But it might be the Orange run game that shows up in Week 1. Liberty allowed 2,662 yards rushing in 2018 and over 5 yards per carry. The Orange attack led by Moe Neal and Abdul Adams could have a huge night.
The pass defense wasn’t much better for Liberty last season, but they were able to generate a decent amount of turnovers. However, the defense allowed 40 or more points in seven games last season. Syracuse’s offense scored 40 or more points eight times last season. You do the math. It should be close to automatic for the Orange to score this Saturday.

Prediction

Syracuse should not have much trouble on Saturday night. There will be some growing pains, but overall the Orange are a much better team than Liberty. The Flames may try some trick plays or something of that nature early, especially with a veteran head coach. But even with a slow start, Syracuse will win this game going away. I may even be going too low with the point total, but I’ll take the Orange to win Week 1 by a score of 62-17.

DEFENSIVE LINE

The highlight players of the defensive line are senior ends Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson. Both logged ten sacks last season and the Orange got at least one sack from the duo in ten games last season. Each player had multiple sacks in three games, including one effort with three sacks. Coleman notched his trio in the bowl game against West Virginia, while Robinson got his against Connecticut.

A three-year starter, Coleman has 11.5 sacks among his 16 career tackles for loss. Robinson, who has 20 starts in his two years on campus, has 15 sacks and 23 tackles for loss in his career and forced three fumbles last season. Both earned All-ACC honors from various media outlets coming into this season.

The cupboard is not bare beyond the starters. Junior Kingsley Jonathan played in every game last season, starting the last two games. Jonathan finished third on the team with five sacks in that limited action. Redshirt senior Brandon Berry has played in a dozen games in each of his two seasons as SU, starting six times in 2017. He notched his first career sack last season against Notre Dame.

The worst injury suffered by any player in fall camp to this point is a leg injury to senior McKinleyWilliams. Williams has missed only one game in three years and head coach Dino Babers mentioned in late August that he expects Williams to return from this injury by mid-September. A nine-time starter at nose tackle last season (15 starts overall), Williams was slotted at defensive tackle coming into the year.

Josh Black will take over the nose tackle spot as a redshirt junior. Black, who started four times last season at the nose, started nine games at defensive end as a freshman, but has bulked up and is one of the strongest players on the team. He has registered eight tackles for loss in his career.

Kenneth Ruff will be the likely starter at defensive tackle while Williams remains on the shelf. The senior has appeared in 32 games at Syracuse without a single start. Ruff notched a pair of sacks as part of his 4.5 tackles for loss last season.
Redshirt senior Shaq Grosvenor appeared on the two-deep entering fall camp at tackle and redshirt sophomore Curtis Harper will be next in line at getting a shot at seeing the field. Grosvenor has seen action in just five games and Harper made it on the field just once last season.

https://fansided.com/2019/08/28/syracuse-football-2019-preview-schedule-predictions/ (fansided.com; Nissen)

It’s going to be tough to replace All-ACC quarterback Eric Dungey, but behind talented sophomore Tommy DeVito the Orange hope to build on their first 10-win season since 2001.

After three straight 4-8 seasons from 2015-2017, Syracuse finally turned it around last year with a 10-3 record including a huge bowl win over West Virginia to cap it all off. Dino Babers inherited a bit of a mess from former head coach Scott Shafer, and while it took him a while to turn it around, the results from last year are undeniable.
The offense ranked No. 11 in the country in points per game last season and it was in large part due to Eric Dungey, who had a fantastic season for the Orange. Dungey threw for a career-high in passing yards and passing touchdowns in 2019 with 2,868 yards and 18 touchdowns. Unfortunately, that production will need to be replaced, but people around the Syracuse program seem to think that Tommy DeVito is up for the job.

DeVito, one of the best recruits Babers has signed, was a four-star recruit that ranked as the No. 13 pro-style recruit in the class of 2017. The 6-foot-2 signal-caller has a fantastic arm, but questions could arise about his accuracy. If DeVito can effectively get the ball to what should be a talented receiving corps, he will have no problems replacing the production of his predecessor.
The defense was one of the best at getting to the quarterback last season. The Orange ranked sixth in sacks last year and that should continue this year too with seniors Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman returning after recording 20 combined sacks last season. The line will be by far the best part of this team and has the chance to be one of the premier units in the country in 2019.
Syracuse football best-case scenario

  • Aug. 31 – at Liberty – W
  • Sep. 7 – at Maryland – W
  • Sep. 14 – vs. Clemson – L
  • Sep. 21 – vs. Western Michigan – W
  • Sep. 28 – vs. Holy Cross – W
  • Oct. 10 – at N.C. State – W
  • Oct. 18 – vs. Pitt – W
  • Oct. 26 – at Florida State – W
  • Nov. 2 – vs. Boston College – W
  • Nov. 16 – at Duke – W
  • Nov. 23 – at Louisville – W
  • Nov. 30 – vs. Wake Forest – W
Record: 12-1 (7-1 ACC)
This would be rather ambitious and it would probably warrant a top ten ranking going into bowl season, but it isn’t impossible with the weak schedule that it presents itself for Syracuse this upcoming season.

http://dailyorange.com/2019/08/breaking-no-22-syracuses-schedule-game-game/ (DO; Graham)

Syracuse’s 2019 schedule offers a favorable path for the Orange to repeat or even better their 10-3 record from 2018.
SU currently faces just one team ranked in the preseason Top 25, No. 1 Clemson in the Carrier Dome on Sep. 14. Syracuse’s 2018 opponents won a combined 51.7 percent of their games, as opposed to the 2019 slate, which finished last season with a 55.8 winning percentage.

Here’s a game-by-game breakdown of Syracuse’s 2019 schedule.

at Liberty (Saturday, Aug. 31, 6 p.m.)
Dino Babers said he’s nervous about this game. SU doesn’t really know what to expect from the Flames. Even though the eligibility of Auburn transfer quarterback Malik Willis was denied, Liberty is still debuting a new scheme under new head coach Hugh Freeze. Freeze was once the offensive guru behind Ole Miss’s powerful offense. SU’s challenge is meshing study of Freeze’s schemes with notes about personnel. Ultimately, while Babers might be nervous about this contest, if the Orange don’t come out asleep, there’s too much talent on SU’s side of the ball.

at Maryland (Saturday, Sept. 7, noon)
Syracuse starts the season against two-straight new head coaches on the road. Against Maryland, the Orange will travel to College Park and face off with Mike Locksley’s Terrapins. Locksley was Alabama’s offensive coordinator last year, helping unleash the potential of Heisman contender quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. But without top receiver Jeshaun Jones, the Terrapins are just a bit hamstrung. How Syracuse shows up on the road in Week 1 could go a long way in informing how they’ll handle Maryland a week later.

No. 1 Clemson (Saturday, Sept. 14, 7:30 p.m.)
What a game to make a home debut. The last time these teams played in the Carrier Dome, SU pulled off the program’s biggest upset since the Orange beat Penn State in 1987. Then last year, the Orange went to Death Valley and almost stole a win. But don’t forget, backup quarterback Chase Brice played most of that game. Sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence, when healthy, is arguably the best player in college football. He filleted Alabama’s defense to the tune of 44 points in the National Championship game. If he plays the whole game, this one might be over quickly. The Orange simply do not have anyone close to as talented as Lawrence. College GameDay, anyone?

https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny/sports/2019/08/28/letters-to-larson-week-1 (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson)

Each week, Spectrum News Sports Director Mark Larson will answer your questions on everything Syracuse football. Have a question for Mark? Ask and follow him on Twitter! For a full Syracuse football preview, tune into Orange Empire: The Next Step, on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. on Spectrum News.

When Dino Babers first came to Syracuse, he said to have faith and soon the community will see something they’ve never seen before. Four years later, Syracuse sits at pre-season ranked 22nd in the country. Is this now Syracuse football?
It’s a little too early to tell if this is now the new norm for Syracuse football. There’s no doubt Dino Babers has rejuvenated a once proud program and returned it to prominence. But as Babers’ own mantra says, the Orange want to be consistently good and not occasionally great. So let’s see what the next season or two holds in store first.

The biggest question going into the 2019 season is Tommy DeVito. The season that Eric Dungey had in 2018 was a key for the Orange’s success. With a new QB under center, should the results be any different?
As good as Eric Dungey was, the Orange have a chance to be even better under Tommy DeVito who has a better arm and seemingly just as much moxie. Dungey was a relatively unheralded recruit who turned out to be one of the best in program history. DeVito is a 4-star prospect who has the potential to put up even bigger passing numbers over the next three seasons because he won’t run as much as Dungey and should stay healthier.

The Orange have four running backs that can all see the field. Moe Neal is the most experienced running back, Abdul Adams showed flashes in the Camping World Bowl, Jarveon Howard scored seven touchdowns in 2018, and Jawhar Jordan is a speedy freshman with potential. How do you see the running back situation playing out?
Running back is unquestionably the strength of the offense. Syracuse has two or three guys who could start a game and at least three of them have breakaway speed. Expect to see plenty of Neal and Adams throughout the game and Howard in goal-line situations. Now it’ll be up to the offensive line to make some holes for them to run through.

There’s lots of talent at the wide receiver position. Who sticks out to you and why?
The Orange have had some good receivers over the last few years with Amba Etta-Tawo, Erv Philips, and Steve Ishmael re-writing the record books. But from what little I’ve seen from Trishton Jackson, he looks like a guy who will eventually be playing on Sundays. His TD catch in the Camping World Bowl was special, and his ability to get himself open should make him one of the best in the ACC this season.

Syracuse football will face the Clemson Tigers in Week 3 of the 2019 season. College GameDay may not be coming to host after the latest bombshell.
In one of the most anticipated Syracuse football seasons in history, there is one game that is circled on everyone’s calendars: Week 3 Orange vs the Clemson Tigers.
The game already has a ton of hype around it with Tim Green’s jersey retirement, home/ACC opener, homecoming weekend, primetime game (already set for 7:30 p.m.), and this could decide the power of balance in the entire conference.

For all of those reasons and more, many assume that ESPN’s College GameDay will grace the hill for the very first time in history to cover the Syracuse football squad.
In the wise words of Lee Corso, not so fast my friends.
An interesting nugget was dropped this week that may mean nothing but could be an indication of where ESPN is leaning this season.
Syracuse Alum Sean McDonough has been assigned the play-by-play duties for the huge game that will take place at the Dome on September 14 between the Clemson Tigers and the Syracuse Orange.
McDonough will be on campus the day before to receive an award from the University called the George Arents Award, which is given to an alum who has performed above and beyond in their respective professions.

On most Fridays in the fall, McDonough is on the road getting ready to announce a football game for ESPN the following day. However, because of McDonough receiving such a high honor from his Alma Mater on September 13, ESPN is making McDonough’s traveling schedule much easier and will put him on the game against Clemson the next day.

But is this a signal toward ESPN’s plans regarding College GameDay in Week 3?

More 2019 Preseason Bowl Projections (RX; HM)

More 2019 Preseason Bowl Projections

Here are two sets of preseason bowl projections...

From BR: Predicting College Football's 2019-20 Bowl Games
Walk-On's Independence Bowl (Dec. 26): Houston vs. Wake Forest
Military Bowl (Dec. 27): Memphis vs. Pittsburgh
Quick Lane Bowl: NC State vs. Northwestern
New Era Pinstripe Bowl: Boston College vs. Minnesota
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl: Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech
Belk Bowl: South Carolina vs. Virginia
Sun Bowl: Florida State vs. Washington State
Camping World Bowl (Dec. 28): Oklahoma State vs. Syracuse

Goodyear Cotton Bowl (Dec. 28): UCF vs. Notre Dame

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. UCF has been the Group of Five's New Year's Six representative in each of the past two seasons, and it should be the cream of the crop once again. Expecting another undefeated season might be a bit much with a home game against Stanford and road games against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh on the docket, but it's feasible. The fantastic part of this projected matchup is that Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush is almost certainly going to be UCF's starting quarterback with McKenzie Milton expected to miss the entire season following last year's gruesome knee injury and with Darriel Mack Jr. out indefinitely due to a broken ankle. It would be poetic justice for Wimbush to finish out his career with a statement win over the coaching staff who decided (rightly so) that it was better off with Ian Book at quarterback.

Capital One Orange Bowl (Dec. 30): LSU vs. Miami
Here's a not-that-bold prediction for you: No 2019 bowl game will have a wider spread in Vegas than the Orange Bowl. That's due to the combination of the fact that it will be the top non-CFP team from the ACC against either Notre Dame or the second-best non-CFP team from the SEC and the assumption that the only good team from the ACC (Clemson) will be in the CFP Top Four. Maybe it ends up being Georgia or Texas A&M instead of LSU, or perhaps it's Syracuse or Virginia Tech instead of Miami. Either way, you're looking at one of the projected eight best teams in the nation against an opponent right on the preseason Top 25 cut line. Of course, Georgia was supposed to blow out Texas in last year's Sugar Bowl, and that didn't happen...

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Oklahoma
Playstation Fiesta Bowl: No. 2 Clemson vs. No. 3 Michigan

Bowl Games by Conference
ACC
(10 teams): Boston College (Pinstripe Bowl), Clemson (Fiesta Bowl), Florida State (Sun Bowl), Miami (Orange Bowl), NC State (Quick Lane Bowl), Pittsburgh (Military Bowl), Syracuse (Camping World Bowl), Virginia (Belk Bowl), Virginia Tech (Music City Bowl), Wake Forest (Independence Bowl)
BOTTOM LINE: These predictions stink! I hate 'em and what's more, I think they're wrong. I mean, what are the odds that the Belk Bowl will choose the exact same teams as they had last year? and why would the Camping World Bowl want Syracuse two years in a row? for that matter, why would Syracuse want that? I do like the idea of Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee in Nashville, though...

Top 5 ACC Sports Moments? We can do better! (RX; HM)

Top 5 ACC Sports Moments? We can do better!

The night the ACC Network launched, the co-hosts were asked to list the top 5 ACC sports moments of all time. Their picks were, shall we say, a bit controversial...

From ACCN Launch Special:

Top 5 Moments in ACC Sports History

JORDAN

1. 2016 Clemson Nat'l Champ - final TD to Renfro
2. Notre Dame Digger Phelps ends UCLA streak
3. NC State 1983 MBB Champ vs. Houston
4. UNC women's soccer dynasty 92 straight wins
5. UVA MBB redemption 2019

KELSEY
1. NC State 1983 MBB Champ vs. Houston
2. 2016 Clemson Nat'l Champ - final TD to Renfro
3. Duke MBB Laettner beats Kentucky 1992
4. UNC Michael Jordan 1982 Nat'l Champ
5. UNC women's soccer dynasty 92 straight wins
PURE GARBAGE.

We can do better... MUCH better!

HOKIE MARK's TOP 5 ACC SPORTS MOMENTS:
1. Florida State ends the SEC reign in the final BCS Championship Game.
Why top 5? It changed the narrative for 2 conferences - the ACC and the SEC - in football. Keep in mind that every other P5 conference and Notre Dame had all tried and failed to unseat the SEC atop college football - this was the first ACC team to give it a try, and the Noles came through big time. The ACC hasn't missed the playoffs since, and has won 3 of 5 national championships - but it all began with that one.

2. Clemson hands Nick Saban his worst loss at Alabama - in the 2019 CFP Championship
Why top 5? Not only was it Clemson's third national title... over the big bad bully Alabama... it was a total humiliation job on national tv. Now the question isn't "can an ACC team win the national championship in football" but, rather, "can the best SEC team keep up with the ACC's best?" (In my mind this narrowly edges out the Renfro TD catch - but take your pick).

3. Duke beats UNLV in the 1991 NCAA semi-finals
Why top 5? The Blue Devils had played in several NCAA MBB finals games but had never won one - and the previous year set an NCAA record for the worst championship game loss ever (by 30, to UNLV). So when Duke found themselves facing the Runnin' Rebels again in 1991, everyone assumed they had no chance of winning. The moment I remember from that '91 semi-final was early on, when a UNLV player was racing for a layup and the only defender back for Duke was Bobby Hurley, he gave the Rebel player a hard foul and glared at him - the UNLV player looked surprised; the Blue Devils came to play! (Note: Duke went on to win the national championship in '91, then repeated in '92 - a rare back-to-back pair of NCAA trophies).

4. Virginia Cavaliers win 2015 College World Series
Why top 5? Similar to FSU's BCS Championship in 2013, this broke the SEC/Pac-12 stranglehold on college baseball and gave the ACC its first champion in the sport since 1955 (now that's a long drought!). Even though ACC baseball was respected, it seemed no team was ever able to get over the hump. This title reinvigorated the Spring pastime.

5. UNC women's soccer dynasty 92 straight wins
Why top 5? I have to give props to the ladies - this IS impressive!

As season kickoff approaches, Clemson Tigers fan is featured in College Colors Day video (greenville.com; LaFleur)

for gbo

College Colors Day is quickly approaching and one Clemson fan is featured in a special video to celebrate this year's significant football anniversary.

The annual celebration, created by collegiate licensing leader CLC, invites college football fans to don the colors of their favorite school as the football season kicks off.

2019 marks the 15th annual College Colors Day.

Celebrated on Aug. 30 this year, it includes a partnership with the College Football 150th Anniversary and showcases the history of the sport with the theme "Never Fade."

College Colors Day rolled out a new video series showcasing 12 unique fan stories. Clemson fan Stinson Carter is featured in his own video.

In the video, Carter tells his unlikely Clemson fan story. Carter is a screenwriter who grew up in Hollywood and never expected to be a Clemson fan, but was quickly changed when he met his now wife, a Clemson fan.

"She was like a completely different species than what I was used to," Carter said of his wife, Susan.

KISS these boots: Syracuse shoe guy repairs Paul Stanley’s platforms ahead of Amp show (PS; Cazentre)

Ralph Rotella often keeps meticulous records of the work he does at his Discount Shoe Repair shop in downtown Syracuse.

In this case, the records show a pair of boots he resoled this week were 14 inches high, with 7-inch platforms at the heel and 5-inch platforms in the front. The platforms were covered in silver rhinestones. The tops were black leather with a zipper.

But these weren’t your everyday rhinestone-studded, black leather, platform boots.

They’re the ones KISS guitarist and singer Paul Stanley wore for a concert Tuesday night at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview. This is billed as the farewell tour for the legendary rockers.

Rotella didn’t actually meet Stanley, known for his “Starchild” persona in the heavily made-up band.

“These two pretty ladies came in, and said they were from the band,” Rotella said. “They said he (Stanley) needs new soles on these boots for every show.”

Based on past errors, I can almost guarantee 2 phones would have accepted (if he even looked at them) the incorrect jerseys and put them up for sale. Thank goodness for Wildhack.

so how far down a run do you get before things like font are reviewed? if it happens all the time then it would make you think the process has an issue that needs to be addressed.. Dont they have pretty good mock up software these days?

RE: Sean McDonough calling the CU/SU game -- IMO, you guys need to start a write-in/email/twitter/call-in/whatever campaign to demand that ESPN send Gameday to Syracuse for this game. Forget "Loud House"... you need a "Loud Mouse" campaign!!!
