Welcome to The Day of the Programmer!

The Day of the Programmer is an international professional day that is celebrated on the 256th (hexadecimal 100th, or the 28th) day of each year (September 13 during common years and on September 12 in leap years). It is officially recognized in Russia.[1][2]

The number 256 (28) was chosen because it is the number of distinct values that can be represented with a byte, a value well-known to programmers. 256 is also the highest power of two that is less than 365, the number of days in a common year.

The Team That Beat Clemson by Turning Football Into Chess (wsj.com; Higgins)

Since Dabo Swinney won his first national title at Clemson in January 2017, only two teams have managed to defeat the Tigers. One of them, Alabama, is not a surprise, given that the Tide are themselves a dynastic juggernaut.
The other is, surprisingly, Syracuse. Not one of college football’s major powers, Syracuse is often not very good at football. Last weekend, they were shellacked 63-20 by unheralded Maryland.

Yet in October 2017 at the Carrier Dome, then-second-year coach Dino Babers’s team knocked off the Tigers 27-24. It would be the Orange’s fourth and final win of the season.
Underdogs still in 2018, an improved Orange team marched into Death Valley and nearly defeated Clemson again. Syracuse led for most of the game until the final 41 seconds, when Clemson’s star running back Travis Etienne capped a comeback drive with a touchdown to give the Tigers a 27-23 win.
As Syracuse prepares to host Clemson again on Saturday, the rest of college football may wonder: What does Dino Babers know that other coaches don’t? The answer may be tournament chess.

Babers learned chess in third grade and started competing in tournaments in middle school. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he said that playing chess on the clock taught him the value of speed, a principle he has since co-opted for his offense.

“Once you hit the clock, if the opponent hasn’t moved by the time the clock moves, you get to have two moves in a row, which is a huge advantage,” said Babers of the board game. “We kind of play football that way.”

Roth: After Maryland debacle, Syracuse faces major gut check against Clemson (D&C; Roth)

The Syracuse University football team is about to find out if it is good at getting up off the canvas.
If it can, as the old Timex commercial went, take a licking and kep on ticking.
The Orange getting blown out at Maryland 63-20 last week was among the worst losses in coach Dino Babers’ three-plus seasons.

But it was easily the most disappointing given SU was coming off a 10-3 season, its best since 2001, and was ranked in the preseason Top 25. Handing yet more fodder to critics who believe, when it comes to football, the Atlantic Coast Conference (yawn) consists of Clemson and nobody else.

Was it a case of possibly taking an opponent just a tad lightly and, as human nature is prone to do, peeking ahead to Saturday’s showdown against the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Tigers at the Carrier Dome that will house just its ninth sellout for a football game since its white puff debuted on the Syracuse skyline in 1980?

We’re about to find out.

“When you lose like that, it’s time to check your hole card, that’s for sure,’’ said Babers, who during his weekly news conference chased down his humble pie with a bottle of TUMS. “I don’t know about the challenge; if you got something in you, you’re going to respond.’’

Ever since joining the ACC in 2013, Syracuse has been a thorn in the Tigers’ paw. Clemson leads the series 5-1 but four of the six meetings have been decided by 10 points or less, the last two coming down to one possession.
Syracuse upset Clemson 27-24 in 2017 at the dome, moving Tigers coach Dabo Swinney to visit the Orange locker room and offer congratulations (shades of Joe Paterno in 1987). It was the last time Clemson lost a regular season game, its streak now at 19.

Advanced outlook: Clemson-Syracuse projections (tigernet.com; Rink)

for gbo

Clemson’s recent series with Syracuse may be the prime example of how much projections and odds can go out the door when toe meets leather on kickoff.
Three-straight games, three-straight seasons with a starting QB going down to injury in the first half -- the last two certainly having an effect on Clemson’s gameplan in a series split home (27-23 Clemson win in 2018) and away (27-24 Syracuse win in 2017).
That hasn’t been the sole factor for closer games, the Orange have limited mistakes (one turnover in each game) and took advantage of Clemson’s (10 points off of three Tiger turnovers in 2018). Syracuse has used tempo to keep the Clemson defense off-balance, especially in its 2017 win, often snapping the ball before Tiger defenders were fully set. They rank 31st nationally in plays per game coming in (77.5; FBS opponents only per TeamRankings.com) after ranking second in the nation last year. Also key in the close calls and possibly a big difference this year -- now-graduated Syracuse QB Eric Dungey made big plays at big moments to keep the Orange in it, and in 2017, come out on top.

As Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has had to point out this week — after an Orange blowout loss at Maryland — the 2017 Syracuse team wasn't particularly eye-catching either and still pulled off the upset, improving to 4-3 with the win and then proceeding to lose out for a 4-8 final tally. They entered as a 24-point underdog, which is where the odds started this week before pushing to around four touchdowns (27.5).

That all said, Clemson is a big favorite for a reason. Here’s how they shape up efficiency-wise through two games:

Efficiency ranks Offense Defense Special teams

CU SP+ ranks (No. 2 overall)15443
SYR SP+ ranks (No. 70 overall)85525
CU ESPN ranks (No. 5 overall)18283
SYR ESPN ranks (No. 74 overall)875736

(SP+ is a metric from ESPN's Bill Connelly, formerly of Football Outsiders and SB Nation, that combines ratings for the five factors of efficiency, explosiveness, field position, finishing drives and turnovers. ESPN’s Football Power Index-based metric has similar statistical factors weighing together).

The defensive efficiency numbers are a little more forgiving for Syracuse -- probably because of just how many of the Maryland yards were totaled with the game in hand last week. By the Orange's game averages, they rank 97th in rushing defense, 103rd in passing defense, 102nd in scoring defense and 105th in third down defense. Back to the analytics realm, they are 109th in stuff rate (percentage of carries stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage) but 10th in sack rate, improving early on a top-25 finish in the stat last year (21st).

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney isn’t worried about style points, he said before the start of the 2019 season.
His players had a different message following last week’s 24-10 victory against Texas A&M.

From star quarterback Trevor Lawrence to starting safety Tanner Muse, Clemson’s goal for the matchup against the Aggies was clear during postgame — to leave no doubt.

“A lot of people said it was lucky we came out of there [in 2018] with a win. So we wanted to leave no doubt this year, and I think we did that,” Lawrence said.
The goal is the same for the top-ranked Tigers this week as they travel to Syracuse — the site of their last regular season loss. The Orange upset Clemson in the Carrier Dome in 2017, and the Tigers had to rally for a 27-23 victory a year ago.

“The last time the team went to Syracuse I wasn’t on the team, but they beat us, so we’re going to have some motivation going into the game,” Lawrence said. “Definitely kind of want to leave no doubt this game.”
Clemson is at a point now where it’s not good enough to just win. The Tigers want to win handily and impose their will on the opposition.

Clemson has won each of its past 12 games by at least 14 dating back to last year’s matchup against Syracuse. The Tigers will almost assuredly be double-digit favorites for the rest of the regular season.
“We try to dominate the opponent. It doesn’t matter who you play or where you play,” Swinney said. “They keep score for a reason. Let’s try to dominate the opponent and have a killer instinct to our team and do it for four quarters. Let’s come out ready, let’s try to sustain for four quarters and let’s finish.”

CLEMSON FOOTBALL: Syracuse faces 'big test' (thetandd.com; Lentz)

The No. 1 Clemson Tigers travel to Syracuse this week to take on the Orange in Syracuse's home opener.

CLEMSON FOOTBALL: Lawrence not worried about stats, just winning

The stakes are even higher for the Orange as they look to pick up their second all-time win over a No. 1-ranked team, appear on ABC's "Saturday Night Football" for only the second time in school history and play in front of a sold-out homecoming crowd.

Head coach Dino Babers understands the challenge facing his Orange is one of epic proportions.

CLEMSON FOOTBALL: ‘No doubt’ Syracuse to be ready, Swinney says

"I think we have a big test. What we just went through was big and now we have another opportunity against the best team in the country," Babers said. "I look at Clemson and think about the [1972 Miami Dolphins] going undefeated in the National Football League. It's only been done once. Other teams may get a Super Bowl ring, but they don't go undefeated. What Clemson did going undefeated is impressive, but to me that's a heck of an accomplishment, and now they have the opportunity to do it again. It's been very, very impressive."

Orange on offense

Since Babers arrived in 2016, Syracuse has run 3,210 plays in 39 games – an average of 82.3 plays per game.

AP Top 25 Reality Check: Will winning keep Clemson at No. 1?

The Orange have ranked in the top five in the FBS in total plays each of the past two seasons, including logging a school-record 1,063 plays in 2018. Syracuse's average of 81.8 plays per contest last season was second nationally to ACC rival Wake Forest (82.1).

This season, the Orange are averaging 74.5 plays per contest.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the Orange have six 50-plus points games, third most of any ACC team during that span.

Five of those offensive outbursts came in 2018 as Syracuse established a new school record for 50-plus-point contests. The previous standard was set by the 1904 team, which achieved the feat four times. In 2018, the Orange matched the school record with 62 total touchdowns on the way to scoring 523 points, the highest single-season total in program history.

Want to get a whole lot more from TheTandD.com?

However, even facing a Tiger team that lost five defensive linemen to the NFL, Babers is not expecting anything to be easy.

Syracuse faces another daunting task vs. Clemson (SI; Axson)

It can be argued that the toughest opponent Clemson has faced over the past two seasons has been a surprise thorn in the side of the Tigers.

In fact, over Clemson’s last 36 games, only two teams can say they sent the defending national champions home with a loss: Alabama in the 2018 Sugar Bowl and division foe Syracuse, which beat them three months earlier.
The Orange were close again last year and had the Tigers dead to rights after Trevor Lawrence was knocked out the game in the second quarter of his first college start with a head injury. Lawrence’s backup, Chase Brice, rallied them as Clemson came back from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to win 27–23. Brice led them on a 94-yard, 12-play game-winning drive, capped off by a two-yard touchdown run with 41 seconds left by Travis Etienne, who ran for 203 yards.

Heading into 2019, optimism was high for the Orange, who even received two first-place votes to win the Atlantic Division in the ACC preseason media poll. But a sluggish offensive performance in a 24–0 opening win over Liberty portended a 63–20 blowout loss to Maryland in Week 2, re-setting expectations for this season.
Clemson will now be more than a three-touchdown favorite when the teams square off Saturday night, but there is no doubt this is still a big game, at least to Syracuse. The Carrier Dome will be sold out for a football game for the first time since the 1998 season.

The Tigers opening two games, against Georgia Tech and Texas A&M, have featured their stout defense, which held both opponents to under 300 total yards. Clemson has gotten off to slow starts, making for the possibility of a team to think it has a chance to actually win, but the inevitable happens once the offense gets cranked up.

Starting Over In Syracuse (shakinthesouthland.com; dbbm)

Hey what the hell was that, Syracuse? Three years of improvement in a row, a ten win season last year, and you couldn’t keep a game with Maryland competitive enough to stay ranked for one more weekend? There’s no ranked vs. ranked games this week, this could have been something. As it stands you’re 1-1 and have yet to play a normal football game. Coming into the season there was an expectation that blue chip/extremely Jersey QB Tommy Devito would step right into noted crazy person Eric Dungey’s shoes and the Orange would keep rolling. So far that hasn’t happened and it looks like Syracuse might be in for more growing pains for a while on offense. Through two weeks the offensive line is struggling, Devito appears to be lacking any of Dungey’s ability to improvise, and the receivers and QB look out of synch in Baber’s option route heavy offense.

We’ve hit the Art Briles point of this article. While Briles is justifiably gone from the college game, his impact on schemes at this level is not. Dino Babers runs a scheme that originated out of Art Briles’ “veer and shoot” offenses that melded an inside, option oriented run game with wide splits and aggressive shots downfield in the passing game. Combine that with lightning fast pace and aggressive usage of RPO’s and you have a recipe to create a lot of stress for a defense.

Babers has typically run a more pass oriented version of this system, often using four and five wide receivers to spread the field out vertically. Last year marks the first time in a long time that one of his offenses was able to run the ball efficiently, and the first time Syracuse ran more than threw in his tenure. In 2018 Dungey and then Junior RB Moe Neal were able to provide the backbone of an efficient, if not explosive, rushing attack.

The ground game is where the Syracuse offense has looked its best this year, leaning on the run in the second half against Liberty because Devito was getting throughly outplayed by “Buckshot” Calvert. Neal, Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard give Syracuse an experienced and versatile trio of running backs. Syracuse also has a pair of serviceable tight ends, and has been pretty varied with personnel and formation, even occasionally going under center. Babers is quite good at using formations to create space in the running and passing games.

Matt Connolly "Orange Nation" 9-12 (espnsyracuse.com; radio; Axe)

Matt Connolly of The State newspaper in Columbia, SC joins the show to talk about what Clemson players are saying about playing in the Carrier Dome, the Tigers weakness, and much more!

SU Head Coach Dino Babers sits down with Brent for their weekly interview to talk Syracuse Football, Clemson, and Mike Tyson quotes.

Clemson Football: 3 Reasons the Tigers blowout Syracuse (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

for gbo

The Clemson football team will take on Syracuse Saturday evening. Here are three reasons the Tigers blowout the Orange in the Carrier Dome.

The Clemson football team is coming off an impressive win over the Texas A&M Aggies in Death Valley.

The Tigers beat the Aggies 24-10 and didn’t allow a touchdown in the game until less than 10 seconds remaining. To score, Jimbo Fisher had to call a timeout and score on a fourth and goal play from inside the 5-yard line.
With the win, Clemson improved to 2-0 on the season and the Tigers control their own destiny for their path to the CFB Playoff.

On the other end of the spectrum, Syracuse is coming off a 63-20 loss to Maryland a week ago. The Orange were ranked and looked to be in shape to make this one a game, but the loss has put that into question.
The Clemson football team comes into the match up with Syracuse as a 28-point favorite. Many analysts around the New York area believe the Orange aren’t just up to cover that number, but to provide an upset during the team’s Homecoming game.

That being said, there’s a reason that Clemson football is a heavy favorite.

Here are three reasons why the Tigers could blowout Syracuse Saturday night in the Carrier Dome.

It’s clear after watching the first two weeks of the season that Tommy DeVito isn’t Eric Dungey. DeVito is a decent passer of the football and he’s done a nice job, but he doesn’t have the running ability or intangibles that Dungey possessed.

That doesn’t mean that he couldn’t develop into a solid QB. But, for now, it’s just not the same playing field.
One of the reasons that Syracuse had success against the Tigers the past two seasons is because of Dungey’s ability to make things happen. I’m not sure that DeVito possesses that same ability.

In addition, Syracuse has an inexperienced offensive line that could make things that much harder on DeVito with Clemson’s pass-rushing ability.

USA TODAY Sports college football staff picks for Week 3 of the season (usatoday.com; Staff)

Sometimes the best weekends are the ones you don't expect to have a lot of drama.
If that's the case, college football fans should be in for a treat in Week 3. There's no games matching ranked opponents and no contests that have obvious College Football Playoff implications. But there's plenty of interesting rivalry and conference showdowns that have potential to make things interesting.

No. 1 Clemson had a hard time dealing with Syracuse the past two seasons, losing once and barely surviving at home last season. The Tigers travel to face the Orange, who will be looking to bounce back after a poor effort against Maryland last week.

Other intriguing conference matchups have No. 6 Ohio State visiting Indiana and No. 8 Florida heading to Kentucky. If in-state rivalries are your thing, there's Iowa State hosting No. 18 Iowa and No. 11 Penn State facing off with Pittsburgh.

The one game that might be the most interesting sees No. 16 Central Florida clash with Stanford. The Knights have been unbeaten the past two regular seasons and haven't come close to making the playoff. A win against a Pac-12 team could give them an opportunity to have a stronger case this year.

Syracuse football will wear ‘classic’ uniforms against No. 1 Clemson; SU student section renamed; more (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football is going back to a classic look for Clemson.
After wearing white jerseys for each of its first two games on the road, the Orange is breaking out the blue for homecoming against the No. 1-ranked Tigers on Saturday.
SU announced the uniforms with a video on Twitter Wednesday. The video says “Classic never changes” at the end.

The combination will be an orange helmet with a blue jersey and orange pants.

Classic is back. The Orange return to the traditional home uniform look on Saturday.

In more Orange sports news, Otto no longer has an Army.

Syracuse announced on Wednesday that the student section for SU athletics is now called the Ozone, after years of being Otto’s Army.
Here’s more from SU on the name change:

The renaming of the Ozone is the result of a collaborative effort involving Otto’s Army, the Residence Hall Association, Student Association, and Greek Life, and will serve as a vehicle to bring all groups from campus together on game day. The section has been called ‘Otto’s Army’ in prior years. The student fan group that bears the same name will continue to lead the cheers at all Syracuse University athletic events.

The Six Pack: Iowa-Iowa State, Clemson-Syracuse among best college football picks in Week 3 (cbssports.com; Fornelli)

I don't know who has had it worse to start the season, The Six Pack or Tennessee. Sure, the Vols have opened the year with home losses to Georgia State and BYU, but The Six Pack went 1-5 last week. That was a follow-up to a 2-4 performance on the season.

We're entering Week 3 staring at 3-9 and trying to dig ourselves out of one hell of a hole.

But you know what? We will dig out of that hole. It won't be easy, but it will get done, because we #TrustTheProcess around these parts, and it's always darkest before the dawn. Plus, you know, even if we keep getting picks wrong, you can always fade us and get rich. You win either way!

Games of the Week

Iowa State (+3) vs. No. 19 Iowa: There are no games between ranked opponents this week, but I probably would have included this as a Game of the Week even if it were. This is one of my favorite rivalries in college football, even though it doesn't get much attention outside of Iowa. Rare is the occasion these two play with much fanfare, but ESPN's Gameday is coming to town on Saturday.

All of which is great, but has no impact on what The Six Pack thinks about the game. Generally, when it comes to rivalry games like this one, I gravitate toward the dog and try to convince myself with reasons to go against it. I can't find enough here. I know the Cyclones didn't look great in their opener against Northern Iowa, but I try not to take too much from openers. If anything, I see this as a team that's coming off a bye and had the extra week to prepare for hosting their in-state rival. I don't know if the Cyclones win, but I think this will be a fun, close game, and it's hard to pass up the home team getting points. Iowa 24, Iowa State 23

Syracuse (+28) vs. No. 1 Clemson: Clemson and Syracuse have not shared the ACC for long, but while Clemson has a 5-1 advantage over its new division mates as ACC foes, three of those five games have been quite close. Last year, Syracuse nearly knocked off the Tigers in Death Valley, but Clemson prevailed 27-23. The year before, Syracuse beat Clemson in The Dome Formerly Known As Carrier 27-24. The 2015 affair in Syracuse was a 37-27 Tigers win. Now, because Syracuse got waxed on the road by Maryland last week, this is suddenly a four-touchdown spread? With Syracuse at home?

Sure, I'll take four touchdowns! Clemson is an absolute juggernaut, but this line is an overreaction to Syracuse looking bad in its first two games of the season, but Syracuse was in the odd position of opening its season with consecutive road games. Also, as amazing as Clemson is, it doesn't perform all that well as a huge favorite. Since Dabo Swinney took over, the Tigers have been favored by 20 points or more in 40 (40!) games. They're 14-26 ATS in those games, and that includes a mark of 1-5 ATS when favored by 20 or more on the road. I don't think Syracuse is going to win this game, but it deserves far more respect than this spread is giving it. Clemson 38, Syracuse 20

Syracuse football is hoping to regroup in time to pull off the upset vs Clemson in Week 3. Here’s the only way they can do it says an ESPN expert.

After the Syracuse football squad surprisingly lost to the Maryland Terrapins in Week 2, a lot of media analysts and fans jumped off the bandwagon.

Despite the massive slip up on the road, the Orange have a massive opportunity in front of them to change their 2019 destiny.

It’s a game that has been widely discussed over the last several months, especially considering the last two matchups in 2017 and 2018 between Syracuse and Clemson.
The Orange are 1-1 and their immediate future is uncertain. While the Tigers are 2-0 and feeling great.
After parsing through the analytics, discussion, and details it seems like there’s only one way for Syracuse to pull off the upset per ESPN broadcaster Sean McDonough who joined The Manchild Show with Boy Green earlier this week on The Score 1260:

“Syracuse is going to have to keep pace with them because Clemson is going to score a lot of points. It’s a little scary if Maryland put up 63, how many points are the Tigers going to put up? The Orange have to trade blows with Clemson if they want to have much of a chance. The good news is they have the confidence of knowing they can play with this team based on the last two years. If you’re an Orange fan you have to hope last week was an aberration and maybe this is the week Syracuse puts it together.”

Clemson football travels to the Carrier Dome for a matchup with Syracuse on Saturday. Can the Orange pull the mammoth upset?

There’s always an air of intrigue when a highly ranked team travels to the Carrier Dome. It’s one of the more unique atmospheres in college football, and it has proven to frustrate good teams in the past. Clemson themselves dropped a game here just two seasons ago.
This game is even more intriguing du
e to Clemson’s performance through the first two weeks. They’ve been very good, there’s no doubt, but they haven’t been firing on all cylinders.

Trevor Lawrence is completing 63.8 percent of his throws, and he’s thrown three interceptions to only two touchdowns.

Saturday features several matchups that see highly ranked teams going on the road. It could be a chaotic weekend, and this game could be a part of that.

Date: Saturday, Sept. 14
Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
Location: Syracuse, NY
Venue: Carrier Dome
TV: ABC
Live Stream: WatchESPN or FuboTV
Keys to Victory

For Clemson, this game comes down to finding their rhythm offensively. Lawrence hasn’t found the Heisman form that many expected of him, but it’s still early on. This game could end up being a breakout performance for him.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...ling-entering-acc-matchup-turned-upside-down/ (washingtonpost.com; Wang)

Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins was in his early teens when the 25th-ranked Cavaliers last hosted Florida State. At that time, the Seminoles still were regularly in the national championship hunt while his current school remained an afterthought in the ACC football hierarchy.

Perkins, a redshirt senior, recalls watching plenty of Florida State games from thousands of miles away in Arizona, where he was blossoming into a high school star, because the Seminoles always seemed to be featured on national television.

“There’s a tremendous history of great football players and a great football program,” Perkins said during Monday’s news conference at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, “and it’s definitely one of the handful of teams when growing up, you’re like, ‘They’re great.’”

The fortunes of both programs since have changed dramatically.

The Cavaliers, picked in the preseason to win the ACC Coastal Division, are seeking to go 3-0 for the first time since 2005 as they continue their ascent in the fourth year of Coach Bronco Mendenhall’s rebuild.
Mendenhall, who came to Charlottesville from BYU, is one of three active coaches who has taken over two or more programs with a losing record the year before his arrival and directed those teams to a bowl game within his first two seasons. The others are Nick Saban (Alabama, LSU, Michigan State) and Mark Dantonio (Michigan State, Cincinnati).

This week, the Cavaliers moved into the Associated Press rankings for the second time under Mendenhall.

“What it would mean is we’re starting to build a reputation that, yeah, we’re capable and worth considering, especially if you start the season strong,” Mendenhall said of the ranking. “After saying all that, it’s really just interference, and we’ll focus on the game.”

Officials aren't specifying why Florida State punter Logan Tyler is indefinitely suspended from the football program, but the move follows an August DUI crash under investigation by the Tallahassee Police Department.
Florida State coach Willie Taggart confirmed during his weekly news conference Monday that Tyler remained suspended. FSU classified it as "a violation of team rules."

After a public records request from the Tallahassee Democrat for all reports involving Tyler, the Tallahassee Police Department provided an incident report connecting Tyler to an Aug. 22 DUI case.

The names and locations on the incident report were redacted. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Tallahassee police officers were dispatched to a traffic crash at 2:08 a.m. where a man was found unresponsive. The report says EMS officials were unsure if the victim was unresponsive "due to a possible injury or due to his level of intoxication."

For the second straight week, we get no Thursday night college football. That’s a shame, an outrage, and I’m more than slightly sad about it. If you have to watch something, you can watch the Thursday night NFL game to see which of Jameis Winston (5) or Cam Newton (7) breaks their streak of consecutive losses as a starter. Bad NFL football! Yay!(?)

For the second straight week, we also get multiple Friday night games involving ACC teams - and thanks to Wake Forest, we’re 3-for-3 in that regard on the season. UNC-CH and Wake will square off in a non-conference game, so that’s fun. Boston College gets to earn an easy non-conference P5 win as they take on Kansas. If you’re staying up late, that Washington State @ Houston game should put up a ton of points.

There aren’t a lot of great Saturday game either, sadly, and one of the more interesting ones (K-State @ Mississippi Sate) is the same time as the NC State game. When Iowa @ Iowa State is your College Gameday selection, you know it’s a poor week.

Florida State @ Virginia will be interesting in the evening slate of games, while Hawaii plays at a non-insomniac hour as they look to take down their third straight P5 opponent (Arizona, Oregon State) to start the year.

Bad football is better than no football, y’all! Enjoy!

So why in the name of Peahead Walker are these traditional rivals — their first meeting marked the birth of college football in North Carolina — playing a NON-conference game Friday at Wake? And again in 2021 at UNC?

The short answer is the ACC has a flawed schedule rotation in which each of its 14 football programs meet six league colleagues from the opposite division, on average, only once every six years.

But that’s old news. What follows is the long answer prefaced by a suggestion:

After three years of intense and understandable focus on ACC Network preparations — the start-up launched Aug. 22 and has exceeded even internal distribution projections — it’s time for Commissioner John Swofford, his staff and league athletic directors to again explore scheduling alternatives.

The most direct route to ACC programs meeting more often is to play nine conference games a season, a step I’ve long advocated. That would double, to once every three years, the frequency in which teams in opposite divisions that aren’t annual crossover rivals play.

But the route from eight to nine league games is littered with potholes.

Notre Dame, an ACC member for sports other than football, is contracted to play, on average, five ACC opponents each season on a rotating basis. That curbs non-conference scheduling flexibility, especially for the four ACC schools — Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State and Louisville — that have an annual contest against an in-state rival from the Southeastern Conference.

In expanding from 12 to 14 football schools in 2013, the ACC adopted a nine-game model. But the schedule was scrapped before implementation when the Notre Dame deal emerged.

A nine-game schedule translates to five league road games every other season, which in some years might preclude Clemson playing seven home dates, four conference and three non-conference. Clemson’s athletic department and the town’s businesses crave the revenue from those seven games and accompanying crowds of 80,000-plus.

The Tigers don’t and shouldn’t have veto power over the ACC’s scheduling model, but with success comes influence.

Each of the Power Five conferences that play nine league games — the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pacific 12 — has been left out of the four-team College Football Playoff at least twice. Neither the ACC nor Southeastern Conference, which also plays eight league games, has ever been left out.

That’s more a reflection of the ACC’s Clemson and SEC’s Alabama dominating the sport than of their conference schedules, but the theory in some ACC quarters is you don’t mess with happy.

You'll also want to at least keep tabs on the Clemson at Syracuse game Saturday night while you're watching FSU/UVA - just in case the Orange make a game of it again like they have the last 2 seasons.

Best Tailgating 2019

From NewArena: The 30 Best Tailgating Schools In College Football

28. Virginia Tech
Blacksburg isn’t known as a hotbed for partying. However, the Hokies know how to turn up during game-days in the fall. Hokie Village and Hokie Wal are extremely fun areas to check out. The general area surrounding Lane Stadium is simply buzzing — particularly when Virginia Tech is in conference title contention.

27. Florida State
Tallahassee is a wonderland of cocktails, beer bongs, barbecue, and scantily clad women. In short, there are few atmospheres better within the ACC footprint. Of course, the atmosphere is better when FSU is nationally relevant. All the same, one will have fun at Florida State when looking to throw a couple back before the contest begins.

9. Clemson
Though many teams have a similar activity, the Tiger Walk at Clemson is truly fantastic. The main parking lot outside of Memorial Stadium is jam-packed with pop-up tents. RVs roll into the parking lot as early as the Wednesday before the game. From a bird’s-eye view, it’s almost as if the entire region has been cloaked with an orangish-purple blanket. As the fans continue to party, the entire team makes the long walk through the tailgating section into the locker room. With Clemson recently turning into a national power, these tailgates are truly a sight to behold.

2019 Impact Transfers

College Football Transfers Who Will Have the Biggest Impact in 2019

Tavien Feaster, RB, South Carolina
The former top all-purpose running back recruit, per 247Sports, who was stuck behind Travis Etienne at Clemson, Tavien Feaster was no slouch for the Tigers. The bulldozing back runs as hard as anyone in the country, showing terrific power and fearlessness when faced with contact.

The Gamecocks picked up one heck of a back via transfer.

South Carolina's offense has already suffered a loss as quarterback Jake Bentley broke his foot, and Feaster's presence will help freshman Ryan Hilinski transition into a starting role. He has already contributed 136 yards and one score on the ground, in addition to his efforts in the receiving game and as a pass-blocker. He's the bell-cow back this team has lacked for years.

Feaster's efficiency for his build (6'0", 221 lbs) is especially impressive. He's never averaged less than 2018's 5.6 yards per carry. He's already up to 7.2 through two games, showing his capability as a lead back away from Clemson.

Watch for Feaster's role to continue growing as Hilinski leans on him for stability and playmaking.
__________

James Gilbert and Jordon Brown, RBs, Kansas State
New Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman knew he needed to remake the running back room upon his arrival in order to build the program in his image. His North Dakota State teams were often factories for running backs, able to plug and play a new one whenever needed and still produce.

It’s coming...

If you blink, you’ll miss it. New York state’s fall foliage season has begun, according to I Love NY, the state’s tourism website.

Previously reported, Upstate NY’s warm and wet summer could mean later fall colors this year. However, the first signs of autumn colors have appeared in hues of mustard, copper, and bronze in Northern NY.

Shades of red, yellow and orange leaves are also visible in other regions. Here’s a look at this weekend’s expected color change, as provided to the tourism agency by spotters around the state.
