Welcome to Equal Opportunity Day!
The Gettysburg Address is celebrated today by various groups in different ways, and the holiday is given a few different names. It is informally named Gettysburg Address Day simply because it marks the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's reading of the Gettysburg Address. It is also known as Equal Opportunity Day. This day was created by the National Urban League in 1956 and continues to be celebrated as such by the league and others, being proclaimed by politicians on multiple occasions. The third name given to the day is Dedication Day, having been formally named as such by a joint resolution of Congress in 1946. It continues to be celebrated as Dedication Day at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.
The Battle of Gettysburg took place on July 1-3, 1863, between Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces and the Union Army of the Potomac under George G. Meade, in the southern Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. The Confederates were defeated, and Lee and his men retreated on the Fourth of July, the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was a battle of high casualties, with 23,000 Union and 28,000 Confederate soldiers killed, wounded, or missing, out of the 170,000 that fought.

Dino Babers talks defensive switch, offensive line, looks ahead to Louisville (DO; Black)
After defeating Duke to finally break out of a four-game slump and defeat a Power 5 opponent for the first time all season, there was a celebration in the Syracuse (4-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast) locker room on Saturday. The following day’s team meeting was just as exuberant, Dino Babers said on Monday during his weekly press conference.
“It was a good Sunday,” Babers said, smiling. “Was more positive than negative, but we still had growth that had to happen, so it was a good, positive meeting.”
The fourth-year Syracuse head coach praised the play of his defense against the Blue Devils, as the Orange not only forced three turnovers in the third quarter alone but also prevented Duke from ever reaching the end zone. It was the first game for interim defensive coordinator Steve Stanard, who took over the position two weeks ago after Brian Ward was fired following the Boston College game.
A big addition for Stanard during his first showing was the debut of defensive lineman McKinley Williams, who had missed the first nine games of the season due to a foot injury. Babers agreed that Williams’ return to the lineup was key to the defensive resurgence, but the senior’s performance “just OK,” at least compared to his play last season.
“I think the biggest difference is that he allowed other guys to play fresh,” Babers said. “By having that one body there you can put the other three guys, Ruff and Black, on a rotation, where now they’re fresher.”
Another significant change for the Orange was their shift at offensive line, where Airon Servais moved to left tackle and Carlos Vettorello started at center. The swap seemed to have worked, as Syracuse allowed just one sack, tied for a season-low, and ran for a season-high 286 yards and four touchdowns. Babers couldn’t stress enough about how important the center position is to an offense and compared the structure of a football team’s lineup to that of another sport.
“Football is like baseball,” Babers said. “If you wanna have a good baseball team, you need to have a catcher, a pitcher, you better have a shortstop, a second baseman, and a really good center fielder. Then, the rest of your baseball team, you can fill out the edges.

Small changes contribute to offensive breakout for Syracuse (DO; Schafer)
About an hour before Syracuse kicked off the first of three games that will decide if the team is worthy of a postseason appearance, there came the first signs of change. Redshirt freshman Carlos Vettorello and Airon Servais swapped positions, moving Servais back to left tackle, the position he was slotted to play in August.
The move was one of several — including the hiring of a new defensive coordinator — that Syracuse head coach Dino Babers made prior Saturday’s game after a week off.
While there’s no guarantee a simple switch was the solution for the Orange, it led to Syracuse’s best offensive line performance of the season. Syracuse (4-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast), who’s ranked in the bottom of the country in sacks this year, allowed only one. A team that’s rushed for more than 150 yards four times this season compiled a season-high 286. The 49-6 win marked the first time that the Orange had breached 27 points against a Power 5 team this season.
Yes, three turnovers, one of which was returned for a touchdown, gave SU the ball inside Duke’s territory on three consecutive possessions in the third quarter. But still, an offense that had limped through conference play finished opportunities the defense created and provided a spark when the Orange needed a win.

VIDEO: Louisville Football – Syracuse Preview + Vince Tyra (thecrunchzone.com; video; Farmer)
University of Louisville VP for intercollegiate athletics (aka athletic director) Vince Tyra spoke on Monday after the Cardinals earned bowl eligibility in Scott Satterfield’s first year at the helm. Expectations were low coming into the season, with most pundits predicting a three win season at best.
Scott Satterfield took a few moments to reflect on the big win in Raleigh but, as usual, was quick to pivot towards the contest with Syracuse next Saturday.
...
Syracuse not thinking postseason just yet (ESPN: AP)
Syracuse is still alive in its quest to reach the postseason. Dont bother mentioning that to Orange coach Dino Babers.
Were not falling in that trap anymore, Babers said Monday in response to a question about bowl eligibility. Weve got Louisville at Louisville.
Syracuse (4-6, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) snapped its four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 49-6 rout at Duke and winning the final two games would qualify the Orange for the postseason. After Louisville (6-4, 4-3), Syracuse closes the season at home against Wake Forest (7-3, 3-3).
The victory over the Blue Devils was dominant for a team that entered the contest as 10-point underdogs. The ground game produced 115-yard performances by both Moe Neal and Jarveon Howard, who each scored, the defense had three takeaways in the third quarter that were converted into touchdowns and Tommy DeVito was efficient, scoring on a 1-yard run and throwing for two touchdowns.
It doesnt get much better than that.
By far, defensively, offensively, that was the best effort of the season and the score reflected that, Babers said. That was a very, very convincing win. It was thorough. It was extremely thorough.
That it came against a team that also has been struggling was not lost on Babers. Duke has now lost four straight, the last two by a combined 87-13, and is dealing with several injuries, including to center Jack Wohlabaugh and left tackle Casey Holman, who was hurt in the first half of Saturdays game.
That team was extremely banged-up, Babers said. Thats what happens when you get to this stage of the season.
The Orange defense, led for the first time by interim defensive coordinator Steve Stanard in place of the fired Brian Ward, was bolstered by the return of senior lineman McKinley Williams, who suffered a foot injury in preseason camp. He finished with three tackles, including a half sack in his first game of the season, while Andre Cisco returned his 10th career interception for a touchdown, a first for the standout sophomore safety. Duke finished with 279 yards offensively in 85 plays.
I thought it was a good game plan (defensively), Babers said. I thought the kids executed the game plan and I think there were some things that went our way.
It will be interesting to see how it goes this Saturday because the offense that were about to play is a lot better than the offense we just played.
DeVitos final numbers were modest at best -- 6-of-15 passing for 105 yards with zero turnovers while being sacked just once, a rarity this season (Syracuse leads the nation in sacks allowed with 46). Experience-wise, DeVito pretty much has a full season under his belt now -- he played in eight games last season as a redshirt freshman and led the Orange to two victories in relief of injured starter Eric Dungey. DeVito has a streak of 146 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, the third-best mark in the country. His last pick came on his final throw against Holy Cross of the Football Championship Subdivision in late September.
I just think hes settling down, Babers said. Hes about 12 games in. Were starting to see some growth in some areas. Hopefully, we need to see even more growth before we move on to the next chapter because this chapters not done yet.

Seth and Paulie talk about the busy weekend of SU sports and are joined by Syracuse Football beat writer, Nate Mink to discuss the blowout win against Duke.
Syracuse Football: Kendall Coleman will take his talents to Shrine Bowl (itlh; Esden Jr)
Syracuse football stud Kendall Coleman is heading to the Shrine Bowl. Here are all the details and why that won’t be the last honor he receives.
After a dominant performance vs the Duke Blue Devils, Syracuse football star defensive lineman Kendall Coleman is heading to the Shrine Bowl.
Coleman registered 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, a pass deflection, a quarterback hurry, and recorded seven tackles. Most importantly the Orange snapped a four-game losing streak with the 49-6 victory. On the season Kendall has four sacks, which brings his Orange career total to 15.5.
The Shrine Bowl is an annual college football all-star game that has been played since 1925.
This is an opportunity for Kendall to increase his NFL draft stock in front of a national stage. Dozens of NFL scouts attend the game and the practices leading up.
Last year another former member of the Orange also earned an opportunity in the Shrine Bowl and his NFL draft stock went soaring after Jamal Custis made the play of the day trucking over a defender.

How Syracuse Football and Basketball are Responding to #NotAgainSU – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)
The #NotAgainSU movement has gripped not only the Central New York community but the national news landscape for the better part of the last week. Numerous bias incidents fueled by racist and anti-Semitic language and symbols have been reported across the Syracuse University Campus. These incidents plus a lack of response by the University have led to a sit-in protest at the brand-new Barnes Center that’s working into its seventh day as of Monday night.
That protest has garnered massive amounts of attention throughout the region as other schools weigh in and national news organizations like the Today Show and NBC News Tonight travel to Syracuse to cover the protest. Because of its high-profile nature, many prominent figures in the community have been asked to comment on the events that continue to unfold while others have visited the protestors at the Barnes Center.
That list includes SU basketball coach Jim Boeheim who brought pizza to protestors before the Orange’s matchup with Seattle on Saturday night. Because of comments he had made earlier in the week after the Colgate game, the protestors voted to not accept the pizza and donate it. Boeheim spoke with students about their concerns and many protestors thanked him for being there. Here’s how Coach Boeheim and other prominent SU sports figures are responding to the #NotAgainSU protests.
BASKETBALL
Jim Boeheim
“What you’re doing is what we do in this country. This is how you evoke change. Remember, I was here in the 60s. This is not even a protest compared to the 60s. I went through that.”
“This is the way things do get to change. I’m not saying in any way shape or form that anything is okay. Even if we found out who did this and who didn’t do it, that doesn’t change what you’re all saying. I think that’s something that the University has to come to grips with.”
“I’m here to support you and I will continue to support you.”
“The one thing I’ve always felt since I’ve been here, the people in charge, the chancellors through the years have listened. They don’t always do what we all want them to do, whether it’s what I want or whether it’s what you want. But I’ve always felt that there were people here that would listen. Does that mean things are perfect? No it doesn’t.”

There are only two weeks left in the regular season for ACC Football. We’re running out of time in 2019. Let’s move quickly: here are this week’s ACC Football Power Rankings, starting with You Know Who.
No. 1 Clemson
In last week’s power rankings, we discussed just how well Trevor Lawrence has played over the last month. Lawrence continued to hum in the blowout win over Wake Forest: 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) through the air for 272 yards, four touchdowns — three to Tee Higgins — and zero interceptions. Over the last four games, Lawrence is now 69-of-89 passing for 1,041 yards (11.7 yards per attempt), 13 touchdowns and no interceptions.
Trevor Lawrence & Tee Higgins . . . ok at football

The Tigers — with the nation’s No. 1 defense and a red-hot offense led by a generational quarterback prospect — are starting to have That Look. With nine wins over FBS opponents (the only team that can make that claim in 2019), Clemson has an open week before a matchup at South Carolina and the ACC title game.
This team is rolling and dangerous.
Clemson’s seniors won their 52nd game today, bringing their 4-year record to 52-3. The final score of their final home game? 52-3.

Up Next: Bye Week (at South Carolina, 11/30)
No. 2 Virginia
It may be hard to not look ahead — from the outside, at least — but Virginia appears focused on this week’s foe, Liberty. While the matchup with Virginia Tech looms, Bronco Mendenhall isn’t thinking about divisional championships or long-standing losing streaks just yet.
#UVA coach Bronco Mendenhall doesn't love me asking if he'll rest Joe Reed or anyone else vs. Liberty: "We'll play every single player that's available to us in this game. … It sounds like I view the quality of this opponent at a higher level than maybe the outside world does."
— Mike Barber (@RTD_MikeBarber) November 18, 2019
Up Next: Liberty
No. 3 Miami
Despite some recent struggles on the recruiting trail, Miami is in the midst of playing its best ball under Manny Diaz. The Canes have won three straight ACC games, including two on the road; Jarren Williams looks good running the offense, too. After an off week, Miami will take on FIU.
Also, this is good news.
Manny Diaz says Brevin Jordan is "did more" last night at UM practice than he did the previous week. He said the bye week came at a good time for him.

Up Next: FIU
No. 4 Virginia Tech
Ships passing in the night: Virginia Tech and Duke. Since Duke’s 45-10 demolition of Virginia Tech back on Sept. 27, these two programs have moved in completely opposite directions.
- Virginia Tech: 5-1, +89 point differential
- Duke: 1-5, -96 point differential
The #Hokies are playing better football than anyone in the ACC not named Clemson, writes @DavidTeelatDP. Bowl eligibility for these Hokies anything but routine
— Jami Frankenberry (@JamiVP) November 17, 2019
Up Next: Pittsburgh
No. 5 Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh hasn’t won 10 games in a season since 2009 — when the program was in something called the Big East and a 6-foot-4 mustache named Dave Wannstedt was its coach. The 7-3 Panthers have the opportunity to do just that in 2019 — perhaps even more. Regardless, it starts again this week at Virginia Tech.
Week 13 ACC/NC lines
NCSU (pk) @ Georgia Tech
Wake Forest -6.5 vs Duke
Virginia Tech -1 vs Pitt
Louisville -8.5 vs Syracuse
UVA -18.5 vs Liberty
BC +18 @ Notre Dame
Miami -18.5 @ FIU
App State -30 vs Texas State
ECU -14.5 @ UCONN
Charlotte +7 vs Marshall

No. 6 Louisville
Louisville’s run game was held in check — 77 yards on 39 carries, no touchdowns — but the Cardinals still won with relative ease at NC State, 34-20. That’s a nice team rebound after the 25-point loss at Miami.
Scott Satterfield’s program is now 6-4 and headed to a bowl game; this is quite the turnaround from the 2-10 campaign in 2018.
Know this isn’t the game everyone was paying attention to tonight, but Scott Satterfield getting Louisville to a bowl in Year 1 is incredible. https://t.co/8G1ZO5OOXL

No. 11 NC State
Dave Doeren has guided NC State to a bowl game in five straight seasons. For that streak to remain alive, the Pack must snag a critical Thursday night win on the road. NC State hasn’t won a football game since Oct. 10.
Before that, though, a quick tip of the cap to NC State’s run defense, which held its own against Louisville’s strong ground game.
NC State gave up 429 rushing yards to Boston College. Louisville has 28 in a half of football.
— Mark Ennis (@MarkEnnis) November 17, 2019
Up Next: at Georgia Tech (Thursday, 11/21)
No. 12 Syracuse
Syracuse hit the brakes on what had been a four-game losing streak with a dominant win at Duke, 49-6. While the team’s passing attack still slumped, this was Syracuse’s best game of the 2019 season: 286 rushing yards (6.7 yards per carry) and four touchdowns on the ground.
Syracuse football opens as a 9-point underdog at Louisville next week. Orange won this week at Duke as a double-digit underdog.

ACC Football 2019: Best and worst from Week 12 (chopchat.com; Parker)
The 12th week of the 2019 ACC football season is in the books and we break down what went right and what went wrong for the conference.
Entering the weekend that just took place, the ACC football world knew that two things were definite the rest of the way – the Clemson Tigers, for the fifth straight season, are going to be heading to Charlotte and that there might be a game of rock, paper, scissors taking place to decide who they will play.
While the Coastal Division is still a cluster entering the final two weekends of the season, the Tigers showed no mercy in their final game – and made a place where the FSU football team could do something that hasn’t taken place in nearly five years at the end of this season.
This week, nearly the entire conference is taking the field – and maybe, just maybe, we might get a slight step closer to knowing who will be joining the party this December 7th in the Queen City.
Here’s a look at both the best and worst to take place this weekend involving the Power Five league and what took look forward to the most during the next weekend of the college football season.
...
ACC Football News and Notes: Several Teams Still in Play in the Coastal (ngscsports.com; Doucette)
With two weeks left in the ACC season, not everything has been decided. The Coastal Division is a mess with several possibles still in play for Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech. The only thing we know for sure is, the winner will get Clemson in the championship game on December 7.
The other bit of impressive news with the league is just how good its been against all comers. The ACC leads the nation with 32 wins vs teams with a .500 record-or-better. It also points out why the league has so many teams that are bowl eligible with two weeks left. Eight teams, Clemson (11-0), Pittsburgh (7-3), Virginia (7-3), Virginia Tech (7-3), Wake Forest (7-3), Louisville (6-4), Miami (6-4) and Florida State (6-4) can start making bowl plans. Boston College can join this group if they can win one more game. It will not be easy as the Eagles will finish their season on the road with games at Notre Dame this Saturday, then at Pittsburgh next Saturday.
Speaking of the Seminoles, they became bowl eligible last Saturday at home beating Alabama State 49-12. The win puts them back in a bowl game for the 38th time in the last 40 seasons. Virginia Tech is another team that has a similar streak. The Hokies victory over Georgia Tech last weekend means that Virginia Tech has made it to bowl season 27 straight times. It’s the longest active streak in the country.
Before the Pittsburgh Panthers can even think of playing in a bowl game, they have to right a ship that did not get off to a good start. The Panthers started the year at 1-2 and have since won five of their last six games to get to a possible bowl game. Head coach Pat Narduzzi improved to 3-0 in overtime games. Pittsburgh, still in the race for the Coastal Division Championship, may have that decided one way or the other when they host Senior Day on November 29 versus Boston College.

Week 12 ACC Football Musings (accsportswar.com; Cates)
Week 12 ACC Football Musings
While Clemson continues to casually steamroll through regular season play, The ACC Coastal race has come fully into focus.
Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh will play a Coastal Division semifinal game next week in Blacksburg. The Panthers don’t make it look pretty very often, but they continue to play great defense and piece things together on offense.
Pitt ranks 11th in the nation in total defense and leads the nation in total sacks with 45. The defensive line is a force to be reckoned with, though coach Pat Narduzzi expects more.
“We’ll have a better outing this weekend. I promise you,” he told the media this week.
The Hokies are clicking on offense since switching quarterbacks and finding a ground game. Hendon Hooker has played efficiently and limited mistakes while also opening up the running game.
Tech has also improved dramatically on defense currently sitting at 44th in total defense after a brutal start to the season. This game is shaping up to be a classic.
Meanwhile, Virginia will await another crack at the Hokies and ending that streak everyone knows about. They have an interesting match up with Liberty (6-4 overall) which is a game they have no business losing, but might prove to be a challenge.
The Flames are pretty solid this year, though they did lose to Rutgers. Yikes.

Brett McMurphy’s College Football Bowl Projections After Week 12 - Stadium )watchstadium.com; McMurphy)
Last week, I mentioned how I had projected Oklahoma as my fourth team in the College Football Playoff for the past four weeks and would continue to do so until the Sooners lost.
Well…I had a change of heart.
Actually, it wasn’t so much anything the Sooners did, but more so what their opponents did — Kansas State and Texas both suffered losses last week. The Wildcats and Longhorns will now likely fall out of the College Football Playoff’s Top 25 rankings Tuesday night, impacting Oklahoma’s strength of schedule down the stretch.
Just last week, I was projecting Oklahoma to finish with a very impressive 4-1 record against teams in the College Football Playoff’s Top 25 (Baylor twice, Oklahoma State and Texas), but now if OU runs the table, the Sooners will likely only be 3-0 vs. CFP Top 25 teams (Baylor twice and Oklahoma State) with their loss to K-State now even worse, since the Wildcats will probably no longer remain in the Top 25.
I’m projecting Utah to win the Pac-12 Championship Game and earn the fourth College Football Playoff bid along with undefeated LSU, Ohio State and Clemson.
Since I’ve been projecting LSU to win the SEC, I haven’t had Alabama projected in the playoff for quite some time, but I dropped the Crimson Tide’s projection from the Sugar Bowl to the Orange Bowl because of the impact of the unfortunate season-ending injury to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

That said, since the 2nd quarter of the Louisville game, Lawrence has completed 77% of his passes while throwing 16 TDs and 0 INTs....advanced metrics say Clemson is what they always are. The flaw — and I feel almost silly calling it that — is perhaps if you can force Trevor Lawrence to press.

From "Winners and Losers from Week 12 of College Football" by BleacherReport, here are the ACC-related snippets:
Winner: Clemson's Playoff Pose
Winner: Notre Dame Mastering a Unique TestDon't look now, but... every element of their football team [is] clicking. This looks like a squad that could repeat as national champion... scored at least 45 points in five consecutive games... The defense is dominant too.
Loser: Mack Brown's Close-Game MojoThe Midshipmen are routinely underdogs, and there's little to gain for the Fighting Irish if they win the game... [a] challenging showdown for the Irish because of Navy's archaic option attack... Ian Book ripped off four first-half passing touchdowns as Notre Dame built an insurmountable 28-0 lead on its way to a 38-3 halftime advantage... The Midshipmen simply aren't built to come back from a large deficit... once things snowballed, it got ugly.
UNC actually rallied from 14-points down to tie the game and force overtime... then:The evidence that coach Mack Brown is turning around North Carolina's program is abundant... But he missed yet another golden opportunity for the Tar Heels to pull an upset Thursday in a 34-27 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on the road.
The Panthers scored a touchdown first in overtime... then stopped Carolina from doing the same...

New outdoor gear retailer open at DeWitt Town Center, Camillus Dressbarn closing (PS; Tampone)
A new outdoor gear retailer is open at the DeWitt Town Center on Erie Boulevard.
All Seasons Outfitters opened Nov. 11. The store carries workwear, outerwear, hunting and camping gear, seasonal sport equipment and more
DeWitt Town Center, located at 3179 Erie Blvd. E., has continued to stay busy following a major overhaul several years ago. The plaza sat largely vacant for years following the closure of big tenants like Hechinger, Price Chopper and Big Lots.
New owners invested in a makeover starting in 2013. They added new lighting and façade improvements and made parking lot repairs, among other things.
Icon Cos., a Syracuse firm, took over leasing. New tenants like Sky Zone, Harbor Freight Tools, Par’s Indoor Golf and others began to move in. The center has been humming since then.
A new gym chain is set to open at the plaza soon. Crunch Fitness is opening its first Syracuse-area location at the center on Dec. 6.
The 23,000-square-foot gym will be in space previously occupied by Herb Philipson's.
Over in the western 'burbs, the Fairmount Fair Dressbarn is on its way out. The chain announced earlier this year that it would close all its stores, but didn’t have a timeline.
The store closing sale at the Camillus location is now underway. The Dressbarn at Destiny USA closed in 2018.
