With winter still going strong, a day dedicated to a type of warm, sturdy clothing is well welcomed. Flannel is made of a fine, smooth yarn called worsted yarn. The yarn is napped on one or both sides. Napping is a finishing process where the fiber ends are brought to the surface, making the fabric softer and warmer.
The words "flannel" and "plaid" are often used interchangeably, but they are referring to different things. Flannel is a material or fabric, not a pattern. In contrast, plaid is a pattern. It originated with tartans many centuries ago. Many plaid shirts today are made of synthetic fabrics and lighter cotton instead of flannel, although many plaid flannel garments are still made.
Flannel was first made in Wales, in the sixteenth or seventeenth century. It was made to replace wool, as it was warmer and sturdier. Since its creation, flannel has been a mainstay of workwear, and it has been important to fashion at certain times throughout history as well. Throughout the years, its warmth, comfort, and versatility have kept it popular.
After getting its start in Wales, flannel spread around Europe during the Industrial Revolution, being aided by a process called carding. It is not known where its name came from, but the French began calling it flanelle, while Germans called it flanell.
In America, it may have first been used during the Civil War, in soldiers' undershirts and four-button coats. In 1889, Hamilton Carhartt opened a factory in Detroit and started making flannel clothes for workers to wear. It was at this time that flannel started being worn by factory workers, by those working on the railroads and in other types of construction, and by loggers. It was also used for long underwear.

4 Syracuse football players invited to 2020 NFL combine (PS; Mink)
Syracuse football will be well-represented at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.
Four players off the 2019 team will be heading to Indianapolis later this month to participate in the preeminent showcase for NFL draft prospects. The four are the most Syracuse has had at the combine since joining the ACC in 2013.
Defensive ends Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson will join punter Sterling Hofrichter and wide receiver Trishton Jackson at the combine, it was announced Friday.
The four players are the most the school will have representing it at the combine since 2013, when Shamarko Thomas, Justin Pugh, Ryan Nassib and Alec Lemon were invited. Pugh is the school’s most recent first-round pick. Thomas and Nassib were both taken in the fourth round that year.
The 2020 combine runs Feb. 23 through March 2. NFL Network will televise coverage.

Syracuse football has scheduled a very manageable future series with UConn. Here are the details and why this is good news for the Orange.
Syracuse football and UConn will be renewing their rivalry and series it was announced in a joint press release.
The two squads have come to an agreement that they’ll play four times between 2022 and 2027. Here’s how it breaks down: the Orange will welcome UConn to the dome on September 6, 2025, and additionally on October 3, 2026.
While on the other side of the coin the Huskies will host Syracuse on September 10, 2022, and also on November 6, 2027.
“We look forward to our four-game series with UConn,” Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack said via the press release. “This is a game our fans have always embraced, both at the Dome and in Connecticut, where we have a strong alumni concentration.”

The former Syracuse football quarterback didn’t get the starting nod for the Dallas Renegades in Week 1. Instead, the team leaned on Philip Nelson for the team’s first XFL game.
Dungey didn’t register a statistic on the day and with starting quarterback Landry Jones set to return in Week 2, Eric is likely going to be buried on the depth chart moving forward.
Dallas ending up losing 15-9 to the St. Louis BattleHawks. Next week the team will travel to face off against the Los Angeles Wildcats on the road on Sunday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

Deal gives county 40 acres of parkland on Onondaga Lake (exclusive) (PS; Knauss)
Onondaga County officials plan to take possession of more than 40 acres of new parkland on the shore of Onondaga Lake. The deal will be announced tonight by County Executive Ryan McMahon at his State of the County Address.
McMahon will announce that Honeywell International Inc. has agreed to give the land to the county along with $625,000. The deal amends a 2004 legal agreement between the county and Honeywell over the cleanup of polluted areas near the lake.
The new agreement requires approval by the county legislature before it becomes final.
The new waterfront acreage along the southwestern shore would give Onondaga County ownership of nearly every inch of the 12-mile lake shoreline, except for a viewing area owned by the city of Syracuse and a state boat launch.
Besides offering new recreational opportunities, the land ensures that county officials control what happens anywhere on the lakefront. That’s important now that water quality is improving and the lake is regaining status as a community attraction, McMahon said.
“To us, it is meaningful that we control the waterfront property around the lake and anything that happens there,’’ McMahon told syracuse.com. “It complements our investments and our assets.’’
Honeywell has been restoring the 40-acre property under a plan approved by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. That work will be completed this spring. Among other measures, Honeywell is establishing at least a foot of soil cover and planting vegetation on land that includes a former Allied waste bed.
