Welcome to Fat Thursday!

Taking place on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent, Fat Thursday is a Christian feast that is primarily celebrated in European countries. It is similar to Fat Tuesday, which is celebrated the following week, but in many European countries, it is the more important holiday of the two. It also is associated with Carnival. As much fasting is done during Lent, Fat Thursday is a day for getting together and eating sweets and other foods that are eschewed during that season. Commonly eaten foods include pączki, berliners, and angel wings.

The holiday is given different names in various European countries, where distinct foods are associated with the day. The day appears to be most widely celebrated in Poland, where it is known as Tłusty Czwartek. Pastries and doughnuts from bakeries are eaten, especially pączki. The tradition of eating doughnuts on the day began in the seventeenth century. In parts of Germany, it is known as Weiberfastnacht. People wear costumes, and celebrations in the streets and in pubs begin at 11:11 a.m. It is known as the "women's carnival" and there is a tradition of women "taking over" town halls. In some parts of Germany, the holiday is also known as Fetter Donnerstag.

How new NCAA transfer proposal could help SU football this season (PS; Mink)

The NCAA is moving toward allowing all Division I athletes to transfer one time without having to sit out a season.

We’re not there yet.

But the Division I Council is expected to consider in April a new proposal that could go into effect for the 2020-21 academic year.

If approved, it would pave the way for Syracuse football offensive lineman Chris Bleich to become eligible to play this upcoming season.

Bleich, a Florida transfer, enrolled at SU last month.

He would still need a waiver approved by the NCAA to play in 2020. This new proposal would change the guidelines used to approve the waiver, making the process more clear and more likely the waiver gets approved.

An NCAA spokeswoman confirmed mid-year transfers such as Bleich would have the new guidelines influence the waiver application.

The NCAA’s willingness to expedite the issue comes one day after the ACC announced its member schools supported a measure to allow all athletes, including those in high-profile sports such as football and basketball, to transfer once without having to sit out a year.

“The current system is unsustainable. Working group members believe it’s time to bring our transfer rules more in line with today’s college landscape,” said Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, chairman of the group putting forth the change.

“This concept provides a uniform approach that is understandable, predictable and objective. Most importantly, it benefits students.”

Under the new proposal, Bleich could be granted a one-time transfer waiver if:

2020 Academic Rankings and the ACC

I saw what claimed to be the US News ranking of national universities posted online. I tried to check it but it appears that US News' website has been hacked (or, at least, there's a problem with their security). So I wasn't able to confirm this data independently - sorry. What do USC and VT have in common? (RX; HM)

What do USC and VT have in common?

The 2020 USC recruiting class ranking was possibly the most disappointing the school has ever had. How did it come to this for the once-dominant Trojan football program, and what does that have to do with Virginia Tech?

Jason Kirk over at Banner Society compared every FBS team’s 2020 class to its recruiting baseline [SOURCE]. The program that stood out the most was USC.

Of course, brand-new coaches hired near or after the end of the season usually struggled to put together a recruiting class - that's normal (and doesn't apply to USC or VT).

Jason found that some schools (like Texas and OU, Miami and Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee , Louisville, etc.) signed 2020 classes which were right in line with their historical averages. Some schools (like Clemson, Kentucky and Georgia Tech) were significantly above average. However, there were a few schools which we way, way below average (such as USC and Virginia Tech).

Virginia Tech's 2020 class was ranked 42.9 spots worse than its all-time norm, and USC was even further below average, at 49.9 spots below. About the Trojans, Jason commented:

In normal seasons, none of the top 22 all-time recruiters had ever finished with a single class ranked outside the top 50. USC, you’ve made exciting history.
Keep in mind that USC isn’t just one of the top 22 all-time recruiters - it was #1 all-time! Well, it was... the 202 class was so bad, it dropped USC down from #1 to #6 all-time. Prior to this, USC had finished outside the top 12 just twice ever, including #20 in 2019... then the class of 2020 came in at #55! Head coach Clay Helton has now signed the two lowest-rated classes in USC history.

Meanwhile, former USC interim head coach Orgeron just won the national championship and signed the #4 class. Buyer's remorse, anyone?

Former Georgia football HC Mark Richt offers opinions on CFB transfers (ugawire.com; Shearman)

It’s an intriguing change of opinion, especially from a man who never blocked any of his players’ transfer waivers in his time as the University of Georgia’s head football coach.

Mark Richt once declared that “life is too short” to prevent collegiate athletes from pursuing transfer options.

While employed as Top Dawg in Athens, Richt allowed tailback J.J. Green to transfer to in-state foe and yearly opponent Georgia Tech. He allowed quarterback Nick Marshall and safety Tray Matthews to transfer to conference rival and fellow yearly opponent Auburn. Multiple others switched allegiances to teams the Bulldogs chance facing every season.

“If the kid wants to go…let him go wherever he wants to go.”

Along nearly fifteen years in Athens, Mark Richt held true to these statements.

That was until, early in his tenure as the Miami Hurricanes’ head coach, Richt blocked the transfer of tailback Gus Edwards. Edwards, a redshirt junior at the time, expressed his intention to transfer to Syracuse University to be closer to his family, which included his newborn child.
