Welcome to National Camera Day!

Everything comes into focus on June 29th each year when we recognize National Camera Day. The day commemorates photographs, the camera, and their invention. A camera is an irreplaceable tool used to record and replicate memories, events, and people/places. Before the invention of the camera, the only resource to document a vision was a painting. Capturing an image of a person or place in a drawing took time and skill. Very few people can perfectly draw the likeness of someone, let alone capture the essence of an event.

The power of a camera provided many with a simple, inexpensive, and fast solution. George Eastman, also known as “The Father of Photography,” brought the camera to the masses. While he did not invent the camera, he did develop many additions improving the use, ease, and production of the camera. His developments made the camera widely available to homes around the world.

Syracuse Football: Analysts project Orange for 2021 3-star QB and DE (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football has landed a few prognostications in its favor from recruiting experts as it pertains to a 2021 three-star QB and defensive end.

Syracuse football presently has a 2021 class with a dozen verbal commitments that, collectively, ranks in the top 60 across the country according to 247Sports and .

Those ratings could certainly improve if the Orange secures some additional 2021 pledges in the near future. To that end, several recruiting analysts have logged projections for the ‘Cuse regarding a three-star quarterback and a three-star defensive end in this cycle.

Steve Wiltfong, director of football recruiting for 247Sports, has put his Crystal Ball prediction for talented quarterback Justin Lamson in Syracuse’s direction.

There’s not many Tahj Bullocks around’: Why Virginia Tech’s recent QB commit is a special talent (richmond.com; Niziolek)

St. Peter’s Prep quarterback Tahj Bullock had to wait his turn.

Bullock was No. 2 on the depth chart as a sophomore behind Maasai Maynor, a four-year varsity player who went on to sign with the Naval Academy.

St. Peter’s offensive coordinator Ryan O’Flaherty said Bullock probably didn’t even play 50 snaps as the team’s backup, but when he burst onto the New Jersey prep scene a year later, leading the Marauders to a state title (11-1) with four fourth-quarter comebacks along the way, it wasn’t a surprise.

“There’s not many Tahj Bullocks around,” O’Flaherty said. “We knew what we had long before the season started.”

O’Flaherty said this week that Virginia Tech is getting a special talent. Bullock committed to Tech on June 17 after an intense months-long, teamwide recruiting effort.

Bullock had double-digit offers with Rutgers and UCLA looking like strong contenders until Tech got involved. The Hokies initially focused their recruiting efforts at quarterback on Dematrius Davis, a four-star recruit out of Texas.

O’Flaherty said Bullock — a 6-foot-4, 200-plus pound dual-threat quarterback — probably would have a dozen more scholarship offers in a different year, but the NCAA put a dead period in place after the COVID-19 outbreak that upended the recruiting calendar.

“The great thing about Tahj was that he wasn’t overly obsessed with having ‘x’ amount of offers,” O’Flaherty said. “He was very confident with how things were playing out and now I think he’s walking into a great situation.”

O’Flaherty saw flashes of Bullock’s Power Five potential going back to when Bullock was a freshman. The team didn’t have a full-blown quarterback competition the next year, but the coaching staff gave Bullock plenty of practice reps against the first-team defense.

“We knew he was going to be the guy,” O’Flaherty said. “If you talk to Maasai, he knew Tahj was there. I think it helped us as an offense and program where we have this young kid really pushing our talented senior.”

Swofford's Legacy (RX; HM)

Swofford's Legacy

John Swofford, ACC Commissioner: 1997-2021

What is John Swofford's legacy after 24 years at the helm of the Atlantic Coast Conference?

Here's what ESPN President, Jimmy Pitaro had to say about it:

Commissioner Swofford will leave a lasting impact on college athletics. He has enhanced the Atlantic Coast Conference in a multitude of ways, including his vision for ACC Network, during his two-decades long tenure as Commissioner. He’s been a tremendous partner, and his progressive nature and leadership advanced not only the ACC but all of college athletics. His influence will be felt for years to come.
Let's take a few moments to really break down the good - and the bad - of John Swofford's tenure as commissioner of the ACC...
Major Accomplishments
Expansion:
Miami (FL), Virginia Tech, Boston College (2003-4)
Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Louisville (2013-4)
Notre Dame (partial member)

When asked on the Packer & Durham show what was his most important accomplishment, Swofford pointed to the expansion teams added under his watch - rightfully recognizing that the other things probably don't happen without expansion.

Power Five
Related to expansion, when the 6 BCS auto-qualifier conferences were pared down to 5 "power" conferences, obviously someone had to go - and it wasn't the ACC. In fact, at one point there was talk that maybe there should only be four "power" conferences, but expansion which brought in recent national championships (Miami) and another finalist (Virginia Tech) ensured that the ACC would remain "in the club".

ACC Network
It happened, which is huge in itself considering how many doubters there were. On top of that, the ACCN has enjoyed monster distribution since it was launched.

Rx: Recruit Like Clemson! (RX; HM)

Rx: Recruit Like Clemson!

I've heard from fans of multiple ACC teams that the Clemson Tigers are "sucking all of the air" out of ACC recruiting by grabbing up most of the best players in the conference footprint. While it is true that Clemson is dominating recruiting in the region, the implication that it's somehow their fault is just not fair or accurate in my opinion. If ACC teams can't compete against Clemson in recruiting, they probably weren't going to get those players anyway.

So today I thought I'd look at what the Tigers have that might be appealing to recruits to see what it would take for other teams to emulate them...

Back in May 2016 I posted an article called "Why Top 2017 Recruits LOVE Clemson". In it, we looked at criteria recruits said were important to them in deciding where to play, Here's how the Tigers scored:

Who's the best head coach in college football? - 2. Dabo Swinney, 16.67%
Who is your favorite coaching staff? - 1. Clemson, 25%
Which team has your favorite uniform? - 2. Clemson, 13.04%
Which team has your favorite facilities? - 2. Clemson, 18.52%
Which is your preferred conference? - 2T. ACC
You may be surprised by that last one, but in fact the only conference preferred over the ACC was the SEC (the other league tied for 2nd was the Big Ten).

Should VT stop recruiting Texas? (RX; HM)

Should VT stop recruiting Texas?

Is it time for the Hokies to give up on TX2VT?

From 247Sports "Virginia Tech in Texas: By the numbers":

According to the 247Sports database, Virginia Tech offered 32 high school players from Texas in the 2020 class. Two of those players signed with the Hokies -- weak-side defensive end Alec Bryant, a four-star on the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, and weak-side defensive end Robert Wooten, a high three-star prospect.

Bryant and Wooten represent a significant change in philosophy for the Hokies in regards to the state of Texas. The 247Sports database goes back to the 1999 signing class for Virginia Tech, and a grand total of zero high school prospects from Texas signed with the Hokies from 1999 through 2019.

Miami Football 2022 QB prospects high on Rhett Lashlee list (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

for gbo

Without a quarterback committed for 2021, the offensive coaching staff for the Miami football program is simultaneously recruiting signal-callers in the class of 2022.

Four-star 2022 quarterback Jacurri Brown played well at the Jacksonville Showcase Camp last weekend according to numerous reports. Brown is one of the QBs that new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is recruiting the heaviest for the Miami football program in the 2022 class per reports. Brown is interested in multiple schools.

Florida currently leads for Brown with the Gators as the only school listed as warm according to his 247Sports profile. Brown is a high school teammate at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, of 2021 defensive end Thomas Davis who is expected to commit to the Miami football program on his birthday August 24.

Miami has offered scholarships to 10 QBs in the Class of 2022. Six Pro-Style QBs have been offered and four dual-threat QBs have been tendered by the Hurricanes. California based QB A.J. Duffy appears to be the most interested. Oregon is the favorite for Duffy with Miami and USC slightly behind.

Brown and several other QBs are worth watching for Miami in the 2022 recruiting cycle. Four-star QB M.J. Morris from Carrollton, Georgia is the 41st ranked player in the Class of 2022, second-ranked dual-threat QB and fifth-ranked player in the Peach State. Morris is being considered by the college football elite.

Zion Turner sophomore highlights

Alabama and Georgia are among his suitors, but Morris does not appear to be leaning towards anyone currently. Lashlee is working hard sending out offers to potential QBs in the 2022 Class in addition to the ones stated above. Lashlee has been in contact with several Miami QB prospects electronically.

Clemson’s grip on ACC is as firm as it has ever been (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

Clemson has owned the ACC for more than a half decade now, ripping through the conference with a 38-2 record since the start of the 2015 season, which does not include five wins in the ACC Championship Game.

The Tigers enter the 2020 season with 19 straight conference wins, 22 when adding their wins over Miami, Pittsburgh and Virginia in the ACC Championship Game.

No one has been a challenge for Clemson from the Coastal Division. After holding off North Carolina and Virginia Tech in the 2015 and ’16 games, the Tigers have annihilated Miami, Pitt and Virginia in the last three title games.

Clemson beat Miami, 38-3 in 2017, Pitt 45-10 in 2018 and Virginia 62-17 last season. All three games were over by halftime.

But the Coastal is not all to blame, either. The Tigers’ longtime rival, and thorn in their side for more than two decades, has fallen into mediocrity. Clemson has defeated Florida State by an average margin of 40 points the last two seasons and in 2017 won by 17 points.

Overall, FSU has lost five straight to the Tigers.

The last two seasons, only Syracuse has come close to beating Clemson in the Atlantic. Chase Brice came off the bench for an injured Trevor Lawrence and rallied the Tigers from a 10-point deficit to beat the Orange, 27-23, in 2018.

Since then, the Tigers have won its last 11 games against Atlantic Division foes by at least 20 points and have an average margin of victory of 42.8 points. No division foe came within 31 points of them last year.

A lot of credit for Clemson’s dominance in the ACC goes to the type of program Dabo Swinney has built in Tigertown over the last decade. Clemson has not only destroyed the ACC, but its also taken down college football powers Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma along the way.

University at Buffalo coach Lance Leipold talks to his team during practice at UB Stadium on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019

Every college football program could have at least one case of Covid-19 (buffalonews.com; Lenzi)

Zach Binney doesn’t hesitate to forecast a probability for college football this year.

Binney, an epidemiologist at Oxford College of Emory University in Atlanta, believes at least one player on each of the 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams could test positive for Covid-19.

It's not an indictment of college football. It's the reality of a highly contagious viral disease that doesn’t have a vaccine and that, in some parts of the country, the number of cases is continuing to spike.

“That’s not a stretch,” Binney said. “That’s virtually guaranteed. There’s simply too much of the virus for someone not to get sick or become infected at some point. Not because they’re playing football, but because of the prevalence and the contagion of the disease.”

As college athletes return to campus for voluntary workouts this month, they’re getting tested for Covid-19. As of Saturday, at least 48 of the 130 FBS schools have had athletes or athletic staff test positive for the virus or for antibodies. Only Indiana, Maryland, UTEP and Florida Atlantic have confirmed they have yet to have an athlete or athletic staff member test positive.

Some schools are releasing data in the name of transparency, while at least 13 athletic departments at FBS schools, including the University at Buffalo, are citing student and medical privacy as a reason not to release data regarding positive tests.

The interesting thing about Chimney Bluffs, especially in the summertime, is how the sun strikes the peaks both at sunrise and sunset, making the ancient glacier silt deposit’s orange composition truly spectacular. The angular spires reach over 125 feet in the air above Lake Ontario just east of Sodus Point in Wayne County. Nearly five miles of trails criss-cross the park with a cliff-edge Bluff Traill above and the wave-worn stony shore below the best vantage points to enjoy the view. But no matter seductive the siren call of the pinnacles are, however, they remain prohibited to scampering feet and hands, so look, but don’t touch the delicate formations. Chimney Bluffs State Park Directions: 7700 Garner Road, Wolcott, NY 14590. From NY 104: travel north on Bluff Road to the park entrance off Garner Rd. There is also an entrance to the Bluff Trail at the end of East Bay Road, which is off Garner Road. Parking: Parking is available in the west parking (main) lot, near the Wetland Viewing Area, and on the east side of the park near the stairs to the Bluff Trail. Cost: Free, open year-round Reporter David Figura contributed to this story.
