Welcome to National Fried Chicken Day!

Fried chicken, also known as Southern fried chicken, is eaten today. In order to make it, chicken is usually cut at the joints into smaller pieces, and the skin and bones are left on. It is coated in batter, which is made of ingredients such as eggs, milk, flour, and seasoning. It is then pan-fried, deep fried, or pressure fried in lard or oil. It ends up with a crisp or crunchy outside and a juicy inside.

The Scottish were the first Europeans to fry their chicken in fat, although they didn't use seasoning. Many ethnic groups in West Africa made seasoned fried chicken, that they battered and then cooked in palm oil. Today's fried chicken has its roots in the American South, where African Americans combined the frying techniques of the Scottish with the seasoning methods of West Africa.

Prior to the mid-twentieth century, chicken was quite expensive and fried chicken was only eaten on special occasions. Its price went down with the rise of industrial animal farming, and by the late 1990s and early 2000s, fried chicken was being mass-produced. There are now many fried chicken restaurants, and some of them have deals on National Fried Chicken Day. In the past, Grandy's, Church's Chicken, and KFC have participated.

Recruiting Roundup: Justin Lamson to Syracuse; Duce Chestnut drops top 8 - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse football got two pieces of good recruiting news over the weekend.

The first was a commitment from three-star 2021 Oak Ridge (Calif.) quarterback Justin Lamson. He picked the Orange over Louisville, Boise State, Wyoming and San Jose State on Friday.

Thank you to all the coaches who have recruited me and believed in me
COMMITTED
— Justin Lamson (@justin_lamson10) July 3, 2020

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect is rated by 247 Sports as the 31st best dual-threat quarterback in his class, and threw for 3,576 yards and 29 touchdowns, and rushed for 462 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He was named Sacramento Bee All-Metro Player of the Year.

Lamson is Syracuse’s earliest quarterback commitment in a cycle since Tommy DeVito committed in April, 2016. The converted safety is now SU’s 14th commitment in the class of 2021.

» Related: 2021 DE Jatius Geer to Syracuse

Syracuse is not expected to take another quarterback in the 2021 cycle, which means Lamson will join DeVito, the likely starter in his redshirt senior season, David Summers, Drew Gunther and Dillon Markiewicz and JaCobian Morgan.

On the July 4th holiday, Syracuse was named a finalist for 2021 Camden (NJ) defensive back Duce Chestnut.

Rated four stars by 247, Chestnut’s final eight also includes Michigan State, Ole’ Miss, Miami, Rutgers, Michigan, Kansas and Louisville.

California QB Justin Lamson commits to Syracuse: 'They're getting a competitor and leader' (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Justin Lamson is just the latest high school football player to pledge his services to the Syracuse University program.

A rising senior from just outside of Sacramento, California, Lamson picked the Orange over several other offers, including Louisville and Boise State.

He made his college decision Friday afternoon with the intention of entering his high school senior season with his school of choice behind him.

Now, after enjoying a nice weekend at Lake Tahoe in California, the 6-foot-3 quarterback jumped on a video call with CNY Central to discuss perhaps the biggest decision of his young adult life.

"It's been a little hectic," he shared with a smile. "Just with everyone congratulating me and stuff -- my teammates and coaches. People knew about it -- the coaches -- about a week ago. Now all the players on the team know. It's been pretty nice to meet those guys and text with them and stuff. So, it's been cool."

Lamson's the 14th prospect to commit to Syracuse's 2021 recruiting class, and the first quarterback to do so.

Syracuse Football: Landing Justin Lamson will bolster recruiting efforts (itlh; Adler)

In a positive sign for its recruiting, Syracuse football secured a commitment from Justin Lamson, one of the top un-committed 2021 QBs in the country.

It’s no secret that Syracuse football has somewhat struggled as it pertains to recruiting quarterbacks in recent cycles, but getting a pledge from 2021 three-star QB Justin Lamson could do wonders for the Orange coaching staff moving forward.

In mid-June, the ‘Cuse offered the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Lamson, a rising senior at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, Calif. A couple of weeks later, and Syracuse had its quarterback for the 2021 recruiting cycle. He’s a top-20 dual-threat quarterback in his class.

Per CuseNation.com’s Mike McAllister, getting Lamson at this stage, as it relates to quarterbacks, is “the earliest in a recruiting cycle since Tommy DeVito pledged Orange in April of 2016.”

2021 4-star CB puts Michigan in 'Elite 8' (wolverineswire.usatoday.com; Hole)

Michigan currently has one cornerback committed in Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas three-star Ja’Den McBurrows, and it’s been seeking out a second to join the 2021 class.

One of its top options is a player from a familiar high school: Camden (NJ) — where both Cesar Ruiz and Brad Hawkins attended before ultimately transferring to IMG Academy and Suffield Academy, respectively. That recruit is four-star CB Duce Chestnut, who released an ‘Elite 8’ on Saturday evening.

The Wolverines made the cut, along with MSU, Ole Miss, Miami (FL), Louisville, Syracuse, Rutgers and Kansas. But the No. 137 player in the country — per — still remains open as to where he might attend at the next level, he contends.

Elite 8

— Darian “Duce” Chestnut (@BallgameDuce) July 5, 2020
Still, the maize and blue have a lot to offer the emerging defensive back.

He shared in April with WolverinesWire what he’s looking for in a prospective program, why he’s a good fit anywhere and his strong relationship with Michigan cornerbacks coach Mike Zordich:

Given his versatility, Chestnut isn’t seeking a particular scheme as much as he’s looking for a team that recognizes his inherent value.

That said, he brings a little something to the table no matter what a defense runs in the defensive backfield.

“That’s what’s good about my game,” Chestnut said. “I can play Cover 2 base corner, I can play in man-to-man, press corner. I can do whatever you need me to do, so it doesn’t really matter the scheme of the defense.”

At the moment, Chestnut and Zordich are continuing to build upon a solid foundation, relationship-wise.

Get to know Syracuse’s class of 2021 football commits (DO; Emerman)

Terry Lockett became the first commit of Syracuse football’s 2021 class on March 22. Lockett, a 3-star defensive tackle from Springfield, Massachusetts, promised to recruit more prospects, using social media to add more high school juniors to Syracuse.

“I’m just thankful to start the process at Syracuse, and hopefully other people will come along and join the family, because this is something special that Syracuse is building,” Lockett said.

Eleven more commits have since followed Lockett. Many have communicated with SU coaches via videoconference and have taken virtual campus tours due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

As of July 3, Syracuse’s 2021 recruiting class is 13th out of 14 ACC schools, per 247 Sports, with 12 three-star commits. Here’s an overview of each of their verbal commits:

Terry Lockett, 6-foot-1, 255-pound defensive tackle, 3-star

Lockett weighed offers from Michigan, Buffalo and UMass before choosing SU. At Springfield Central (Mass.), he’s coming off two straight Division III state championships.

Hayden Nelson, 6-foot-4, 248-pound defensive end, 3-star

Nelson, a Wisconsin native, was mainly recruited by new defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Vinson Reynolds. Nelson never visited Syracuse’s campus in-person and committed after taking virtual tours.

ACC Football Has Strong Start In Recruiting Class of 2021 (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Vukovcan)

When looking at the job the Pitt football staff has done recruiting this year, even the most negative Panther fan would have a hard time finding many negatives.

Pat Narduzzi, has compiled a Top 25 class and have had to win many recruiting battles in order to land some of their top recruits. That recruiting ranking has the chance to increase depending on who they’re able to land with their final scholarships along with the high chance to a few of their current commitments get elevated to 4-star status.

The good news is that Narduzzi has surrounded himself with a very talented group of assistants, led by Charlie Partridge, Archie Collins and Chris Beatty. Pitt is recruiting as well as they have in many years which is good news for the future.

The bad news is that they’re going to have to maintain this standard because the overall recruiting in the ACC is really strong and in particular the ACC’s Coastal Division.

Louisville Football: 3 reasons the Cardinals will struggle in 2020 (saturdayblitz.com; Gershon)

After a surprise 2019 season, Louisville football’s high expectations heading into 2020 will not be met if they cannot address some major weakness.
The Louisville Cardinals were one of the nation’s best stories in 2019.

After a 2-10 campaign in 2018 that led to the firing of Bobby Petrino and saw the Cardinals drop all eight of their conference games, getting blown out 56-10 at home by arch-rival Kentucky, Louisville put together an 8-5 season in 2019 that ended in a Music City Bowl victory over Mississippi State.

Fresh off a breakout season, many are tabbing the Cardinals as a top 25 team heading into the 2020 campaign.

With 2019 ACC Coach of the Year Scott Satterfield leading the charge and a dynamic offensive trio of Micale Cunningham, Javian Hawkins and Tutu Atwell set to light up the scoreboard, it’s easy to see why Louisville would be looked at in this light.

However, there are some major concerns specifically on the defensive side of the ball that should give fans and media pause before pegging the Cards among the nation’s top 25 squads.

Here are three reasons the Cardinals may see some significant struggles in 2020.

3. Run defense has not been a strength for Louisville

You’d be hard-pressed to find a worse run defense than the Cardinals on display a year ago.

Louisville finished 111th in the country and second to last in the ACC by allowing 212.2 rushing yards per game, including 517 yards in a single game to the rival Kentucky Wildcats in an eye-opening 45-13 loss in the regular season finale.

This wasn’t the first year the Cardinals struggled to slow down the run. In 2018, they finished third-worst in the nation (128th) as they allowed 278.8 rushing yards per game.

While they were able to improve by 66 yards a year ago, it’s hard to expect much of a jump in production in 2020.

Virginia Tech football is the most disrespected team in the ACC (fansided.com; Buhler)

for Hokie Mark

We have a bad habit of forgetting about Virginia Tech football in the ACC.

Virginia Tech football was supposed to be a cornerstone for ACC football growth, right?

Adding the Virginia Tech Hokies to the conference in 2004 after a decade in the old Big East was supposed to take ACC football over the top. Frankly, the Hokies have done more than their fair share of the work in helping make the ACC a respectable football conference in the last 16 years. They have won four ACC Championships and won six division titles since coming over in 2004.

Yet for some reason, we never, ever seem to give the respect to Virginia Tech football it deserves. Even though the legendary Frank Beamer retired after the 2015 college football season, it’s not like his successor Justin Fuente has done a deplorable job replacing a coaching icon. Fuente is 33-20 overall, 20-12 in ACC play and won the ACC Coastal in his first year on the job in 2016.

While Virginia Tech is not one of roughly 20 teams in the nation that have a semi-realistic shot of reaching the College Football Playoff, this graphic by FOX College Football must make every Hokie’s blood boil. It’s blatant disrespect to a program that has simply earned better than this. Since when do the Louisville Cardinals and the North Carolina Tar Heels get to skip ahead in line?

Rx: Football during a pandemic? (RX; HM)

Rx: Football during a pandemic?

Can there still be ACC football this Fall? If so, what needs to happen?

First, a brief recap...
At first there was reason for optimism... During the state-mandated "stay-at-home" orders, the new cases of COVID-19 were flat or declining in most states; the pandemic appeared to be under control!

Then the reopening, and something absurd happened: people didn't simply re-open their businesses, but a significant percentage of people went crazy, it seems. They refused to keep their distance from strangers, attended large gatherings - sometimes in confined spaces and so-called "super-spreader events". They refused to wear masks, even at times insisting they be allowed to enter public buildings filled with other people with their faces uncovered.

The pandemic spiked.

So now, amid that scenario, student-athletes returned to campus and, not surprisingly, football players have been testing positive for the novel Coronavirus. The Clemson Tigers alone have had 37 players test positive.

Is moving football to the spring really such a bad idea? Like it or not, it's time to consider the option (Dallas Morning News; Sherrington)

Straight up: The 2020 sports calendar is irrevocably wrecked. Doesn't matter what happens now, there's no fixing it. The Mavs could come to like living in a bubble and FC Dallas could avoid infecting the rest of MLS and the Rangers could remember to close the lid before flushing, and it wouldn't help. Not enough, anyway. No one will look back at the most tumultuous year in at least a generation and label it a golden year of sport.

So if it's already a bust, is flip-flopping football really such an awful idea?

I can hear you all the way over here: If God really wanted us to play football in the spring, He'd have found better financing.

But let's face it, at the rate cases are spiking, there's a pretty good chance football might not be an option this fall, either. Might as well consider our options.

Lincoln Riley, for one, has thought about flip-flopping, and he's all in if it comes to that.

"I think the people who say it's not (an option), in my opinion, just don't want to think about it," the Oklahoma coach told reporters Friday. "I just think it would be wrong of us to take any potential option off the table right now. I think it'd be very difficult to say the spring is not a potential option.

"I, for one, think it's very doable."

Riley's opinion carries some weight, too, and not just because he's the only Big 12 coach these days who can find his way to the College Football Playoff. You might recall he was one of the few coaches who thought bringing players back to campuses so soon this summer was a bad idea. He could end up 2-for-2 on coronavirus questions.

Riley isn't the only coach open to the possibilities. Jason Lovvorn has thought about it a lot.

The football coach at First Baptist Academy went so far as to formulate timelines for flopping spring and fall sports. A poll of North Texas football coaches by our Greg Riddle found 84% were in favor of such a plan.

How ACC Expansion Teams have worked out so far (2013-19) (RX; HM)

How ACC Expansion Teams have worked out so far (2013-19)

It's been 7 years for most (6 for Louisville) as of yesterday. How have the newbies done so far?

If you count all ACC championships equally, you'd have to say Notre Dame has been the best - even without being eligible for one particular ACC championship:

On this date, @FightingIrish, @Cuse, @GoCards, and @Pitt_ATHLETICS joined @theACC
— ACC Network (@accnetwork) July 1, 2020
Personally, I do NOT subscribe to the "all championships are created equal" garbage! I say assign points to each title based on how much revenue that sport brought in. Of course, even looking at it that way, Notre Dame has the one Men's Basketball championship, so...

ACC Football
...but this is a football blog, so let's talk football! Since joining the ACC, here's how the expansion teams have fared in conference play (note: I've included Notre Dame from 2014-19 since that's the period the Irish have been under the ACC scheduling agreement).

TeamWLwin%
Notre Dame23874.2%
Pitt312654.4%
Louisville262254.2%
Syracuse193733.9%

Clearly, if Notre Dame football were in the ACC, it would be one of the top contenders most years.

Pitt and Louisville football ARE in the ACC, and those programs ARE contenders - though not quite good enough to merit the word "top".

Syracuse football just hasn't been a contender, except for 2018.

ACC Basketball
For men's basketball I got a bit lazy and just averaged the win percentages for each year played in the ACC (from 2013 for Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse, and from 2014 for Louisville). Unlike the ACC, I did not toss out Louisville's vacated wins because, well, I just think that's dumb.

TeamWins%
Louisville63.5%
Syracuse54.8%
Notre Dame50.0%
Pitt32.1%

Why is Cable TV Dying? (RX; HM)

Why is Cable TV Dying?

Some of us still remember when Cable TV used to be reasonably-priced and if your favorite team wasn't playing on one of the cable channels, well, it just wasn't on television. But something happened on the way to 2020, and now cable is not only way more expensive, but you'll need a combination of cable and streaming subscriptions just to see all of the games.

What happened? That's the subject of the article "Who Killed the Great American Cable-TV Bundle?" Here are a few choice snippets (click the link to read the whole [long] thing):

As of August 2018, every minute, another six people cut the cord.

The reason American consumers are abandoning their cable subscriptions is not a mystery: It’s expensive, and cheaper online alternatives are everywhere. But who exactly is responsible for the slow demise of [cable] television? ... The answer can be traced to a few decisions in recent years that have set the stage for this extraordinarily lucrative and long-lived business model to unravel: licensing reruns to Netflix Inc., shelling out billions for sports rights, introducing slimmer bundles, and failing to promote a Netflix killer called TV Everywhere.

Stimulus payments: Here’s when you might see a second round of checks (PS; Linder)

Well, according to multiple reports, early August could be the time to keep in mind when planning for the boost in income.

There’s lots of smoke when it comes to a second stimulus payment — lawmakers have been talking about it more recently — and, although most of those folks are currently on vacation during the Fourth of July holiday, Cnet reports the Senate will have a period of 15 days between July 20-Aug. 7 where the package could be hammered out and agreed upon. If it doesn’t happen then, there’s another window — Sept. 8-25 — when the package could be agreed on.

But, again, provided things go smoothly, the site reports early August is when money could begin to be sent out.

The next stimulus bill would come out of the HEROES Act, which is a follow up to the CARES Act and has passed the House but not the Senate. It would give $1,200 to single filers and $2,400 to married filers, and up to three dependents would get $1,200 as well. Additionally, those with a taxpayer identification number would get a payment, as opposed to CARES, which was just for those with a social security number.
