The Atlantic Coast Conference said Wednesday afternoon that it plans to announce the 2020 ACC football schedule on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 9 a.m. ET.

The ACC previously announced on July 29 that ACC football teams would play an 11-game schedule in 2020 with 10 conference games and one non-conference game. At that time, the ACC revealed the opponents for each team but not the date of games.

It's the date of each game that is scheduled to be announced Thursday morning.

Florida State's opponents for 2020 are scheduled to be Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Virginia at home. The FSU road games are scheduled to be Duke, Louisville, Miami, NC State and Notre Dame.

SU football will soon learn opponent for season opener (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse football will learn who it will face in its season opener when the ACC office announces dates for the schools’ 10-game conference schedule Thursday morning.

The ACC said the full schedule, with game dates, will be released at 9 a.m.

Syracuse knows which ACC opponents are on the new schedule as part of the conference’s 10-plus-1 model announced last week, but the order of opponents, and when the games will be played, will become known tomorrow.

The season is scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 7-12. The Orange starts practice Thursday as well.

Here’s a refresher on SU’s 10 conference opponents. SU will also play one nonconference game against an opponent to be determined. That game must be played in New York.

SU athletic director John Wildhack said last week Liberty would be the school’s first option to fill the nonconference slot given the two schools already had a contract agreed upon.

One ACC division would give Syracuse football better scheduling balance (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football would get to play a larger variety of Atlantic Coast Conference teams if the league elected to have one division.

Syracuse football and its Atlantic Coast Conference peers will suit up in one league division, rather than two, as part of the conference’s 2020 scheduling model released a few days ago.

The league’s 14 members, plus Notre Dame for the upcoming season only, will compete in 10 conference games each, as well as one non-conference battle.

Yet assuming the fall stanza does transpire amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, there always exists the possibility that ACC officials could consider continuing on with one division in the future, if the reception to this kind of model is favorable.

Nate Mink of Syracuse.com noted in an article that ‘Cuse Athletic Director John Wildhack and other ADs in the league have supported making slight changes to the present system “so that schools face each other with more regularity.”

Prior to this football campaign, the Orange has played within the Atlantic division, along with Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, N.C. State and Wake Forest.

The Coastal division, meanwhile, encompasses Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Syracuse Football: Orange heads to pre-season camp on Aug. 6 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football will soon begin its pre-season practice schedule where the entire team is together and players are in pads.

As Syracuse football waits for more details on its 2020 campaign, including dates of its league games and its non-conference opponent, Orange players will transition into their pre-season fall camp beginning this Thursday, Aug. 6.

Syracuse football communications officials have sent out a press release to media members outlining when the ‘Cuse will hold these full-team, padded practices.

The Orange will have 16 pre-season practices, running from Aug. 6 until Aug. 23, with two days off. Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, all of these practices are closed to the media as well as the general public. Head coach Dino Babers and certain players will be available for virtual interviews via Zoom.

Syracuse football commencing its pre-season calendar is a product of a timeline approved by NCAA officials in June. Originally, the ‘Cuse was supposed to kick off its 2020 campaign on Sept. 4 at Boston College.

However, amid the pandemic, Atlantic Coast Conference leaders last week unveiled a proposed scheduling model that entails 10 conference contests and one non-conference clash.

Other Power Five conferences have announced their 2020 dockets as well, with the Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC opting for only conference games, while the Big 12, like the ACC, is proposing one non-conference battle in addition to its league slate.

At this juncture, Syracuse football doesn’t know which foe it will face first. Further details on the Orange’s 2020 schedule, including dates for conference duels, should come soon, media reports indicate. So far, the first non-conference option for the ‘Cuse is Liberty.

3 big questions going into SU football camp (PS; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football opens its fifth preseason camp under head coach Dino Babers on Thursday.

This one, amid the coronavirus pandemic, will be different than the rest. If there is a season to follow, here’s a few of the major storylines that will surround the Orange’s attempt to bounce back from a 5-7 finish a year ago.

How strong is SU’s depth, preparedness compared to its opponents?

We’ll avoid getting into the what-ifs of a potentially shortened season. For this exercise, let’s say college football goes on despite the seemingly unavoidable wave of positive tests that Major League Baseball is dealing with in its non-bubble format.

Depth will be tested. Players across the country will miss practices and games. So, how ready is each team to improvise and adjust?

Babers is no stranger to depth limitations. He’s leaned hard on cross-training his players, particularly linemen, and is doing so again in 2020. For instance, Chris Elmore, the team’s top lead blocker and a rotational defensive tackle last year, is already spending time training at offensive guard.

Syracuse football will travel more than 3,100 miles under new ACC docket (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football has a rough road slate, and it entails the Orange traveling more than 3,100 miles in the 2020 campaign.

The Syracuse football 2020 schedule, as released by the Atlantic Coast Conference a few days ago, did the Orange no favors. The ‘Cuse has to make trips to five ACC foes, four of which are expected to arrive in the top six of the league standings when all is said and done.

An interesting piece by 247Sports national news writer Dean Straka, citing FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman, takes a look at how many miles each of the ACC’s 15 members, including Notre Dame for the upcoming term, have to endure as part of the league’s newly unveiled docket.

Syracuse football, as it turns out, is right smack in the middle, checking in at No. 8 overall throughout the ACC, with the Orange having to travel 3,152 miles over its five-affair road calendar.

As the conference has presently proposed, Syracuse football will pay visits to ACC title-favorite Clemson, along with Notre Dame, North Carolina, Louisville and Pittsburgh.

Syracuse football’s new 3-3-5 defense calls for playmaking DBs - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Sunday’s verbal commitment from four-star defensive back Duce Chestnut will hopefully be a sign of things to come for the Syracuse football team. The team’s offseason overhaul on defense, headlined by a switch for the 3-3-5 defense, should lead to an emphasis on defensive backs in recruiting.

The defensive backfield will not be the only place where recruiting targets are a little different. The switch will result in a greater emphasis on size in the first two levels of defense, particularly among the linebacking corps. While the defense in previous years was willing to trade off a little bit of size in exchange for greater speed on the second level, now those linebackers need to be bigger to fend of blocks with one fewer lineman in front of them to take the heat.

The defensive backs, however, will have a different emphasis. By playing five of them on every down, they will likely have the greatest numbers of any defensive unit. While bigger players have already been a target to provide greater length for coverage and size for run support, these supersized defensive backs will also be looked upon to provide impact plays in the new scheme.

The hallmark of the 3-3-5 is the flexibility provided by its defensive backs. The defense has multiple blitz options, ranging to seven or even eight pass rushers, but also can feature just as many players, if not more, dropping into coverage. It increases the defense’s speed and most players will know their assignment when the play is called, enabling them to just play instead of think about what the offense is doing and responding accordingly.

Syracuse football commit Darian 'Duce' Chestnut chats with Niko and Matt after decision (cnycentral.com; video; Matt & Niko)

He's the highest-rated recruit for the Syracuse football program in nearly a decade.

He's also the highest-rated recruit in the Dino Babers era.

Darian 'Duce' Chestnut, a four-star defensive back prospect out of Camden, New Jersey, announced his college decision on Twitter Sunday afternoon.

Now, he's talking with CNY Central Sports Director Niko Tamurian and Matt Hauswirth about his decision to play college football in Central New York.

"I'm just a playmaker and a winner," Chestnut answered when asked what type of player Orange fans should expect. "I've never been apart of a losing program. If you've watched me play football, you've seen me making plays all over the field. So, just making plays all over the field and my versatility."

Chestnut turned down offers from Miami (FL), Louisville, Michigan State and Rutgers, among so many others, in favor of the Orange.

He tells CNY Central it was the relationship he built with head coach Dino Babers that put Syracuse over the top.

"Coach [Dino] Babers preaching 'La Familia', just a family environment," he explained. "Seeing what those guys are doing up there, seeing what coach Babers is building and seeing the process and I want to be apart of that."

Babers has been known to be a player-friendly coach, but also known to use his military upbringing to shape boys into men on the football field.

Chestnut was looking for all of that, resulting in a bond with the Syracuse head coach second to none.

"We've got a great relationship," he added. "We FaceTime every weekend and just talk about football and things off the field. We just have great conversations. He's a great guy. You can tell just by talking with him and everybody's got good things to say about him. So, it's just a great bond with that guy and I can't wait to play for him."

How UConn's Cancelled Football Season Could Impact Syracuse (lite987.com; Coombs)

The University of Connecticut Huskies officially cancelled their 2020 football schedule--and that could have some interesting ramifications for Syracuse football and beyond.

The decision makes UConn the first Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school to bow out of play this year due to the pandemic. The move will bring about some ripple effects. First of all, it leaves ten teams with an empty slot in their 2020 season. Those teams could now be looking for a new opponent to fill an open date. Perhaps one of those teams could play against Syracuse.

The Orange already have an open date on THEIR schedule, ever since Colgate decided to cancel its 2020 season.

SU has vacant slots between their season opener September 4th against Boston College and September 26th against Western Michigan.

Maybe one of UConn's 2020 opponents could fill it. The University of Virginia Cavaliers are now available on Saturday, September 19th, when they were scheduled to play UConn.

The other factor centers on UConn Huskies players who might be disenchanted with postponing their college football careers at UConn. Or they could be unhappy with the general state of UConn football, which hasn't had a winning campaign since 2010 and which has gone a combined 9-39 the past four seasons.

This COVID-19 timeout might be enough to push a Huskie or two over the edge and transfer to another college. Just sayin'.

Ex-SU OT Koda Martin signs with Arizona Cardinals (PS; $; Bailey)

GKG43XPAM5CE5EWWSOSROMDV2U.jpg

Former Syracuse football offensive tackle Koda Martin has signed as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals.

The son-in-law of Orange head coach Dino Babers, Martin is a second-year professional who went undrafted in 2019 before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Martin suffered an undisclosed injury last year and spent the season on LA’s injured reserve. He was released by the Chargers on Saturday.

In Central New York, Martin started all 12 games at right tackle a senior in 2018. He was a key figure on the front five that stayed healthy throughout a 10-3 season, capped by SU’s win over West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl. Martin led the Orange in snaps (1,111) and finished second in knockdown blocks (31.5) that year en route to earning third-team All-ACC honors.

Martin, who transferred to SU in from Texas A&M, married Jazzmin Babers in July 2017.

ACC 2019 Revenue Report (RX; HM)

ACC 2019 Revenue Report

We published a quick summary of 2018-19 revenue back on July 10th, but thanks to David Teel's research we have a little more information on the ACC's 2018-19 tax return. In it we mentioned that the total ACC revenue actually fell slightly.

2018 was a College Football Playoff semifinal year for the Orange Bowl, which meant that this was the ACC’s one year out of three that it did not receive its $27.5 million payout. As a result, the league’s bowl revenue fell from $114.9 million to $88.4 million (an actual drop of $26.5 million). If we take out Notre Dame, that translates into a decrease of about $1.9 million per school.

On the other hand, the ACC enjoyed a 4.2% increase in television revenue, from $277.2 million in 2017-18 to $288.6 million for 2018-19. This would not include any revenue from the ACC Network, which wasn't launched until fiscal 2019-20 (for that you'll have to check back next year). That translates to $20.6 million per school (not including Notre Dame, which has its own deal with NBC).

The ACC also enjoyed another increase in NCAA revenue last year, which grew from $56.6 million in 2017-18 to about $60 million for the 2018-19 fiscal year. When divided by 15 teams (Notre Dame is a full member for basketball), that represents approximately $4 million per school.

Just because their teams are playing doesn't mean every player will. The NCAA came out with a rule stating that players should not lose their scholarships if they decide not to play during the pandemic, which is in addition to those who are expecting to be drafted by the NFL next Spring anyway.

Here are the known players to opt out so far:
Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State

Who wants Notre Dame football to stay in the ACC for good? (onefootdown.com; Thele)

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NCAA. Each week, we send out questions to the most plugged in Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans, and fans across the country. Sign up here to join Reacts.

As the start of the normal college football season draws closer, schools and conferences are still scrambling to put together a 2020 schedule.

While focusing on conference games was a relatively easy fix for most teams, not every school had that option. The Fighting Irish, historically independent, instead came to an agreement with the ACC for the 2020 season.

Nationally, fans hope this becomes the new reality going forward. According to the most recent SB Nation Reacts survey more than two-thirds of fans said they hope Notre Dame stays in the ACC permanently.

80420_national_3.jpg

ACC fans specifically were even more in favor of the concept, 88% of fans from ACC schools voted in favor. Notre Dame had long been linked to the Big Ten. But a 59% of Big Ten fans are still in favor of the midwestern team staying in the ACC.

On the other side of things, Notre Dame fans dramatically disagree. Nearly 90% of ND fans said they want to leave the ACC after the 2020 season.

Is The SEC Network Trolling The ACC? (dawgsports.com; DOW)

As you know by now, there was some scheduling drama in college football last week. On Wednesday, the ACC announced that they were implementing a “ten plus one” model for the season. The model allowed for ACC teams to play one out of conference game, meaning that traditional rivalries like Georgia-Georgia Tech, Clemson-South Carolina, Kentucky-Louisville and Florida-Florida State could still be played, but only if the SEC’s scheduling model also included an out of conference game.

Well, the SEC decided playing games against the ACC really isn’t that important in 2020, and decided to go with a schedule of ten conference games. ACC folks used that development as an opportunity to say, “Y’all Scared,” and SEC folks used the moment as an opportunity to say, “Y’all ain’t matter none.”

— Ryan Nanni (@celebrityhottub) July 30, 2020

This created a big ol hullabaloo. For a moment there, Georgia Tech fans excitedly stuck their chests out. Then those same fans realized that Georgia would have no reason to be afraid of playing the mighty Yellow Jackets, and their biggest recruiting weekend of the year had disappeared. Cubicles were punched. Cosplay events were delayed.

The posturing for perception went so far that South Carolina decided to be the one school to vote against the SEC’s schedule proposal. The matter was never in doubt, but at least that way they could say “HEY! WE’RE TOTALLY NOT AFRAID OF GETTING OUR ASSES BEAT BY CLEMSON FOR THE SEVENTH TIME IN A ROW.”

Now open: Cure Delicatessen and its homemade pastrami arrive in Westcott (PS; $; Pucci)

Syracuse’s need for a shop offering a proper New York-style pastrami sandwich has been filled, as Cure Delicatessen and Provisions opened for business in the city’s Westcott neighborhood today.

The shop, located at 466 Westcott St. in the former home of Picasso’s Pastries, offers a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, but the star of the show is the pastrami.

The process to making the pastrami starts about two weeks in advance, co-owner Tere Martini said, when the beef briskets are trimmed and placed into a brine of salt and spices. It sits in that brine for around 10 days before being cured, smoked, cured again and finally steamed until being sliced to order for a sandwich.

Cure serves its pastrami two ways: on caraway rye bread from Heidelberg Bread in Herkimer with homemade whole grain mustard and a pickle on the side, or as a Reuben, served atop the same bread with sauerkraut from Food & Ferments in Cortland County, homemade Thousand Island dressing and a pickle.

They plan on eventually making other cured meats and charcuterie in house, Martini said.

Arguably, the five most difficult games on the schedule are all on the road, three are in the top 25.

Where be the Pete Sala torch & pitchfork crew now? ;)

Guess those metal plates are the external decking for the roof.
I’d imagine they’re stacking a bunch of it up there now, so they can just bang out installing it, much like a roofer does with shingle bundles.
