Welcome to National Fluffernutter Day!

Today is a day for the fluffernutter, which is a sandwich consisting of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, or creme, that is usually served on white bread. Sometimes foods such as bacon or bananas are added to the fluffernutter as well. Amory and Emma Curtis of Massachusetts came up with Snowflake Marshmallow Creme in 1913, and during World War I they published a recipe for the "Liberty Sandwich", which was a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich. This is most likely the start of the sandwich. Meanwhile, also in Massachusetts, Archibald Query also invented a marshmallow creme in 1917, and sold it to the Durkee-Mower company. This company began selling it as Marshmallow Fluff, which still exists today. In an effort to better market the peanut butter and fluff sandwich, Durkee-Mower hired an advertising firm and they came up with the name Fluffernutter in 1960. Today other foods that contain peanut butter and fluff, such as bars, cookies, and cupcakes, also are associated with the name fluffernutter. The What the Fluff Festival? is also held each year in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Duke's Johnson on Syracuse: "Very Beatable" (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson)

The football rivalry will probably never match the one in basketball, but Saturday's SU-Duke game at the Carrier Dome appears to be somewhat of a grudge match for the visitors. Last season, Syracuse went down to Durham and thumped the Blue Devils, 49-6, and the wound is still fresh.

"They came down here and spanked us pretty badly," said Duke coach David Cutcliffe Monday. "Any football player is embarrassed by poor performance, and they want to respond."

What You Need To Know

    • Duke (0-4) is looking to avenge a 49-6 loss to Syracuse (1-2) last year in the rematch at the Dome this Saturday
    • The Blue Devils lead the all-time series with Syracuse, 3-1
    • Duke has lost 9 of its last 10 football games dating back to last season
    • Syracuse is a slight underdog against Duke Saturday at 12:30pm on the YES Network
Supplying the opponent with bulletin board material is not the response to which 'Coach Cut' was referring, but sometimes it's unavoidable. Blue Devils' cornerback Leonard Johnson did the honors, issuing this response to a query about his winless team's mentality.

"We can't let this 0-4 start stop our momentum," Johnson said. "I feel like we're going into Syracuse, a good team, but very beatable. We've got seven more games, we've just got to get it cranked up."

No better way to get your opponent cranked up then to label it "very beatable", especially considering the last time you met, that opponent won by seven touchdowns. The Devils sound pretty cranked up themselves, using the 2019 outcome as motivation for this weekend's rematch.

"Last year's game, and the score, was definitely unacceptable," said senior captain Deon Jackson. "Personally, it left a sour taste in my mouth, and I know it left a bad taste in the rest of my teammates' mouths. So, we're extremely motivated, more than ever, to come into this game, and come out with a win."

The Blue Devils have only won once in their last 10 outings, and the average margin of defeat during that span is more than 20 points. Cutcliffe calls last year's blowout loss to the Orange "a real low point for our team".

How Trill Williams went from peewee phenom to Syracuse star defender (DO; Hillman)

The first time Jamel Richardson saw Trill Williams, his new star player dove over a trash can.

It was Trill’s first practice for the Yonkers Knights, a Pop Warner team in Westchester County, and the players were practicing on a converted baseball field with trash cans as pylon markers.

Trill, a rising eighth grader at the time, took a sweep right, dashed past the defense and leaped from the half-dirt, half-grass field into the end zone. In disbelief, Richardson called a huddle to question the new player.

“‘Is this kid out of his damn mind?” Richardson remembered asking.

“I know, coach, but I’m competitive,” Trill replied. “I’m having fun.”

Jaw-dropping touchdowns, like that run, blowout victories and dominant defensive performances headlined Trill’s youth football career. He played almost every position and constantly faced opponents above his age or weight class. While Trill’s plays were surprising to some, Tre Williams, his father, watched him prepare for each one.

Axe: SU football’s youth movement key to 2020 season staying on track (PS; $; Axe)

Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Stargell once said “that’s where the future lies, in the youth of today.”

It’s a fitting description of the current state of affairs for the Syracuse University football team as it prepares for a matchup with 0-4 Duke on Saturday at the Carrier Dome (12:30 p.m., YES Network)

A youth movement has sprouted on Dino Babers' squad with several players who likely still have prom photos on their phones leading the way.

Freshman running back Sean Tucker is the headliner, having exploded for 112 yards and two touchdowns in Syracuse’s 37-20 win over Georgia Tech.

SU-Duke, ACC’s big weekend and Dino BBQ stories with Wes Durham (video) (PS; video; $; Axe)

ACC Network announcer Wes Durham often stops by Dinosaur-Bar-B-Que when he is in Syracuse to call an Orange football game, but as he tells it, going there with former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Eric Wood is an entirely different experience.

Durham joined Syracuse.com’s Brent Axe for a Q&A over Zoom to discuss that, preview Syracuse vs. Duke and a big weekend ahead for the ACC in football.

You can watch Durham and Axe chat in the YouTube clip above.

Scouting the opponent: Syracuse presents unique defensive scheme for Duke football (dukechronicle.com; Piazza)

The Syracuse and Duke football teams from just two years ago would not even recognize their 2020 selves.

The 2018 Orange steamrolled their way to a 10-3 record and bowl win while Daniel Jones anchored the Blue Devils to a bowl victory of their own. But 2018 is long gone—both of these programs have seen a sharp decline in their success since, and this season has been no different.

Both squads will be looking to turn it around, however, this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. when Duke travels to Syracuse, N.Y., to take on the Orange in the Carrier Dome. Let’s take a closer look at the Blue Devils’ next opponent.

3-3-5

Those three numbers mark the lineup of Syracuse’s new defensive formation. The Orange are the first team to bring this defensive scheme to the ACC, and it is dramatically different than the standard 4-2-5 nickel defense. Only three players have their hand in the dirt, leaving the other eight with the flexibility to roam around the field and confuse the opponent’s offensive line.

Syracuse Football: Taj Harris’ draft stock could rise (itlh; Mlodzonski)

Syracuse football wide receiver, Taj Harris has elevated his game in time for his junior season. That could pay off for his NFL Draft stock.

Through three games Taj Harris has made his presence felt. The star receiver for Syracuse football has done more than show out for the Orange but is also one of the top threats in the ACC. Harris’s improvements may be enough to garner attention for the NFL Draft.

I’d be lying if I said Harris hasn’t been a stud ever since he put on his first pair of orange slacks and navy blue shirt. But in year three, it’s clear that he has taken it up a level, all while doing that with a much less talented quarterback.

Harris has 11 catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns through three games. If he continues at this pace, he’ll finish the year with a third consecutive 35 reception season. But more importantly, his yards would set a career-high, and Harris needs just two more endzone catches to set a career-high in that category.

One on One with Syracuse QB Commit Justin Lamson (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football's 2021 class is nearly complete, and one of the top prizes to verbally commit is quarterback prospect Justin Lamson out of Oak Ridge High in California. He was recently named Recruit of the Week and was described as an extremely athletic quarterback with a tremendous ceiling who fits Syracuse very well.

Unfortunately for Lamson, his senior season has been postponed until 2021 due to the pandemic. But that has not stopped him, nor his team, from working hard behind the scenes.

"Just a lot of stuff with my team, I would say," Lamson said. "Practice, lifting. We're practicing two times a week with the ball. Lifting with the team wearing masks and things like that. I'm seeing my trainers once or twice a week to get rehab on my body and make sure I'm feeling good and fresh so when the season starts, I'm one hundred percent."
...

Dino Babers Prepares for Legendary Coach David Cutcliffe (SI; Payne)

Syracuse is 1-2 through the first four weeks of the season. The Duke Blue Devils are 0-4. The Orange defense leads the nation with seven passes intercepted. The Duke offense ranks last with 15 turnovers. Syracuse beat Duke 49-6 last year in Durham, North Carolina. This Saturday in the Carrier Dome, the visiting, winless Duke Blue Devils are favored to beat Syracuse by 1.5 points.

Betting odds don’t mean much to football coaches, but this one had to sting just a little when Syracuse head coach Dino Babers happened upon it as part of his voracious reading regimen.

“We haven't been favored in an entire football game this year. And, you know, that's okay,” Babers said on Monday, seemingly at peace with the apparent disrespect. “We need to get better. Everybody is telling us that we need to get better. And we're working really, really hard to get better as fast as we can.”
In many cases, players will adopt the mentality and philosophy of their head coach. Syracuse players are no exception. Orange corner back Garrett Williams says that having little expected of his team has come to be expected.

“We try not to focus on that because we were underdogs against Georgia Tech last week as well,” Williams said during player press availability Tuesday night. “We just we just focus on our scouting reports and practicing hard and we know if we do those things right, we'll have a good chance of winning the game on Saturday."

Perhaps the reason no insult was taken by Babers and his team is because of their immense regard for the man captaining Duke’s 0-4 struggle. Less than halfway through his 13th season at Duke, Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe is not used to seeing a “0” in the win column. Six of the past eight seasons have ended in bowl games for Duke, three of them being wins. Before Cutcliffe took charge in Durham in 2008, Duke had not appeared in a postseason bowl game since 1994 and had not hoisted a bowl trophy since 1960.
“Coach Cutcliffe's an amazing coach, he really is,” Babers said of his peer and adversary. “He's gone around. He's been around a long time. He's coached some of the best players. Not only in college, but in the National Football League.“

As a quarterbacks coach for Tennessee and then later as the top dog at Ole Miss, Cutcliffe had the chance to develop two future Super Bowl MVPs in brothers Peyton and Eli Manning. Most recently, Cutcliffe is credited for the ascent of 2019 sixth overall NFL Draft pick Daniel Jones.

Syracuse Football: ESPN Football Power Index bleak on ranking, win total (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football can get to .500 in the 2020 campaign with a victory versus Duke, but an ESPN measure isn’t rosy on the Orange outlook for the season.

ESPN has released its latest Football Power Index (“FPI”) for the Atlantic Coast Conference, and despite beating Georgia Tech in its last game, Syracuse football isn’t faring well in this measure.

Within the 15-team Atlantic Coast Conference, which includes Notre Dame during the fall football term, the Orange presently is placed at No. 15 in the FPI, which according to ESPN’s Web site “is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.”

Clemson, the No. 1 squad in the Associated Press and Coaches top-25 polls, is unsurprisingly also in the top spot of the FPI for the ACC. The Tigers are followed, in order, by Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Boston College, Wake Forest, N.C. State, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Duke and Syracuse football.

Syracuse (1-2) vs Duke (0-4) Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

So what went right for Syracuse in the win over Georgia Tech? The offensive line didn’t get everyone in the backfield killed.

The running game still wasn’t anything special, but QB Tommy DeVito got to enjoy a game without everyone jumping on his head, and he was decent – 194 yards and two touchdowns with a pick is good enough for now.

Does Duke have a pass rush? Short answer, not rally. It’s not awful, and it’ll come up with plays behind the line once in a while, but DeVito and company should get time to work. However …

Why Duke Will Win

Syracuse is really, really, really, worst in the ACC awful at coming up with third down conversions. Duke is nothing special at moving the chains, but the Orange so far have had a rough time trying to come up with steady production on long drives.

The O line might have been better against Georgia Tech, but it’s still not all that great and the Syracuse offense is still the worst in the conference. If Duke can somehow get out to a decent early lead, it might finally be able to take control of a game. But …

What’s Going To Happen

The one saving grace so far for Duke is its ability to take the ball away, coming up with eight takeaways. Syracuse has come up with ten and is third in the nation in turnover margin.

It might be shaky, but the Orange make it two in a row.

Duke vs. Syracuse Football Prediction and Preview (athlonsports.com; Minnich)

Blue Devils look elusive win on the road against Orange

Off to their worst start since 2006, the Duke Blue Devils are going on the road to try and earn their first win of the 2020 college football season when they head to Upstate New York to take on the Syracuse Orange. Following last week's 38-31 home loss to Virginia Tech, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe stated, "We have enough playmakers to win football games... It's the most unique time in college football, most unique time in my career, so I don't know what you have to do step by step. It's different what we're dealing with. You have to fight and you have to fight together."

The Blue Devils (0-4, 0-4 ACC) actually led the Hokies, albeit briefly, in the third quarter, 14-10. The painful refrain for Duke fans was the inability to finish the game, as the home team was outscored 28-17 the rest of the way.

Syracuse (1-2, 1-2 ACC) comes into this game well-rested, with its last game coming on Sept. 26 when the Orange beat Georgia Tech 37-20. It was Syracuse's first win after losing the first two games to North Carolina and Pittsburgh by a combined score of 52-16. The Orange more than doubled that output with their 37 points against the Yellow Jackets.

Following the win against Georgia Tech, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers stated, "Do we need to get better? Yes. Are there areas we need to improve in? Yes. But going three games and getting our first win and now having the opportunity to heal up with a bye. Our opponents are all real, there are no gimmes. This bye is coming at a good time."

Former Duke captain and current Duke radio analyst Dave Harding joins Brent “On The Block” to preview the Duke-Syracuse football matchup this weekend.

Back Seat Coacher: Syracuse, Louisville, and an idle week (fromtherumbleseat.com; Dottavio)

On Saturday, September 26th, 1-1 Georgia Tech headed north to take on the winless Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome. Tech entered the afternoon the favorite and left on the other side of a 37-20 loss.

Through Week 4, the SP+ has Georgia Tech ranked 63rd overall, 94th on offense, 40th on defense, and some how 69th in kicking even with the weekly blocked kicks fiasco. Pressley Harvin III and Jahmyr Gibbs are really saving the data there.

Looking ahead- Louisville is 37th overall, a surprising 12th on offense, an unsurprising 74th on defense and 60th in kicking.

In the rear view

The offense

The first data points that jump off the page are turnovers and penalties. The Yellow Jackets committed five turnovers (one fumble, four interceptions) and 15 penalties for 104 yards. Countless times throughout the afternoon, the Jackets were flagged for a false start or motion penalty that killed a drive’s momentum.

Above- This is on both the right tackle and the QB. The Tackle doesn’t identify a blitzer to the QB, and the QB never sees the defender walk up and allows himself to be hit blind sided by the blitz. Sims was going to provide some growing pains for Geoff Collins’ crew but these multi-interception games are going to have the coaches looking at other options.

Freshman QB Jeff Sims struggled against the Syracuse pressure averaging only 6.2 yards per pass attempt, tossing four interceptions, and fumbling once (Tech recovered). Sims did average 5.1 yards per carry (including sacks) and scored on the ground.

2020 Week 6 Factoids (RX; HM)

2020 Week 6 Factoids

From the Weekly ACC press release (and some personal research):

This weekend is the fourth time this season that the ACC has been featured on the Saturday night ABC national game of the week.

Miami is seeking its first 4-0 start since... three years ago, when the Canes opened the 2017 season by winning 10 straight.

Clemson is looking to win its 33rd consecutive regular-season game.

Since Miami joined the ACC, the Clemson/Miami series has been won by the visiting team every single time. The Hurricanes are 2-0 at Clemson, while the Tigers are 3-0 in Miami.

ESPN's College GameDay will broadcast from an ACC school for the fourth time this year when the show airs Saturday from Clemson in advance of the ranked matchup between the No. 1 Tigers and No. 7 Miami. GameDay began the year in Winston-Salem, NC, for Wake Forest's game vs. Clemson (Sept. 12), then was in Louisville for the Cardinals' matchup with Miami (Sept. 19) and was in Miami for the FSU game (Sept. 26). Saturday's broadcast will be Clemson's 25th overall appearance – and sixth home appearance – on College GameDay.

Irresistible Force vs Immovable Object: VT / UNC 2020 (RX; HM)

Irresistible Force vs Immovable Object: VT / UNC 2020

Stats can lie - especially this early in the season. The UNC rush defense is ranked first in the nation in terms of yards per game, but a better measure is probably yards per rush attempt. In that metric, the Tar Heels are giving up just 2.00 yards/attempt - still good enough for third overall. Great, right? However, the teams they've faced - Syracuse and BC - have averaged just 1.50 and 2.00 yards/attempt against Pitt and Duke, respectively. In other words, the same (or a little worse) than they did against North Carolina.

On the other hand, Virginia Tech rush offense is #3 in the nation in yards per game, first in yards per attempt. VT has averaged 7.01 yards/attempt on offense - is that legitimate? Well, consider that the teams the Hokies have faced, namely NC State and Duke, have yielded an average of 2.80 and 3.72 yards per attempt, respectively, to the other ACC teams they've played. For instance, NC State yielded 7.66 yards per rush to the Hokies yet held Pitt to 2.49 yards/attempt and Wake Forest to 3.04 yards/attempt. The Duke Blue Devils held BC to 2.00 yards/attempt, Notre Dame to 4.24 yards/attempt, and Virginia to 5.08 yards/attempt. In other words, Virginia Tech rushed for more yards per carry against NC State and Duke than any other ACC team did.

Bottom Line:
UNC's rush defense is yielding about that their opponents normally get on average, whereas VT's offense is getting more than twice the yardage their opponents normally yield. Based on this analysis it looks like the Tar Heel's #1 rush defense ranking is a mirage while the Hokies' rush offense ranking appears to be legit.

Signs of ACC FB Resurgence - 10/8/20

I want you guys at AllSportsDiscussion to know that I had this already written before you guys posted your article "2020 Proving What ACC Football Could Be". That said, you should read both articles...

Don't look now, but ACC football is pretty good this year - much, much better than last year. How do we know? Let's check out the signs...

Five ACC Teams Ranked

Currently there are five ACC teams in the top 25 - but that fact alone doesn't do the league justice. Four of those five teams are in the top 8; that's more than any other conference has in the top 12! The fifth ACC team - #19 Virginia Tech - is in the top 20. That trails only the SEC's six in the top 20. Trailing the ACC are the Big Ten with four top 20 teams, the American Athletic with two, the Big XII and Pac-12 with one each, and BYU.

BOZICH | Why ACC football needs Miami to take down Clemson (wdrb; Bozich)

As the Southeastern Conference keeps light from falling on Atlantic Coast Conference football teams, Clemson snatches the leftover love from its ACC brethren.

Maybe that will change Saturday night.

I’ll say it: The ACC would benefit from a Miami victory at Clemson.

The ACC would become a more relevant place if the final standings were no longer as predictable as Dabo Swinney showing up in that trademark orange baseball cap.

Neither Mike Krzyzewski and Duke nor Roy Williams and North Carolina have touched the dominance Swinney has created at Clemson.

The record shows that Clemson has won 43 of its last 45 ACC games. Pittsburgh, by one point, and Georgia Tech, by three, are the only ACC programs to topple the Tigers during that thunderous stretch.

Matchup of top-10 teams in Clemson leads league’s pair of top-25 matchups, plus league power rankings

GAME OF THE WEEK

NO. 7 MIAMI (3-0, 2-0) AT NO. 1 CLEMSON (3-0, 2-0)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Where: Memorial Stadium, Clemson, S.C.

TV: ABC

Keys for Miami

Feed playmakers, strike early: Let’s face it. Getting behind early against Clemson is the kiss of death. The Hurricanes know that all too well since they’ve been outscored 96-3 in the last two outings against the Tigers.

So, to avoid a similar fate this time around, it’s imperative that Miami feed its playmakers such as Cam’Ron Harris and Brevin Jordan, and put some early points on the scoreboard. Quarterback D’Eriq King has been impressive in sparking the Canes’ offense and has yet to commit a turnover, which is a trend that needs to continue.

Overcoming the idle jinx: Off weeks were a disaster for Miami a year ago. Three times following an idle week the Hurricanes suffered losses — 28-25 against North Carolina, 42-35 against Virginia Tech and a humbling 30-24 setback against Florida International.

Now, after a hot start in which Miami seemed to find its identity on offense with King running the show, does a week off hurt or help? Stay tuned.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...e6603e-08c3-11eb-8719-0df159d14794_story.html (AP; Kekis)

The touchdown passes to interceptions ratio is raising eyebrows around the Atlantic Coast Conference and some coaches point to the coronavirus as the culprit.
Unlike last season when not one ACC team threw as many interceptions as touchdowns, three — No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 8 North Carolina, and Syracuse — are bucking that trend. The trio has thrown as many interceptions as touchdowns, and three others — Duke, Florida State, and Georgia Tech — have more picks than scores through the air.

Take away the top ACC performers — No. 1 Clemson ( 7 TDs, 1 INT) and No. 7 Miami (7 TDs, 0 INTs) — and the league has 52 touchdowns passing and 45 interceptions.

No. 1 Clemson hosts No. 7 Miami, ACC supremacy at stake (AP; Kekis)

Here are things to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Week 5:

GAME OF THE WEEK

No. 7 Miami at No. 1 Clemson on Saturday night. Both teams are 3-0 and tied atop the ACC at 2-0 heading into Death Valley. The Hurricanes are coming off a bye week and have looked sharp in easily beating UAB, Louisville and Florida State by a combined 130-58 behind QB D’Eriq King, who’s thrown for six TDs without an interception and leads the team in rushing and total offense (297.6 yards per game). His counterpart on the Tigers, Trevor Lawrence, is 55 of 75 for 848 yards and seven TDs passing and has 314 straight pass attempts without an interception, the longest active streak in the country and third-longest in league history. Lawrence has thrown for 73 touchdowns, sixth in ACC history and three behind North Carolina State’s Russell Wilson (2008-10). This will be the 17th all-time matchup of two ACC teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll and these two teams were also in the last such ACC meeting of top 10 teams — in the 2017 ACC Championship game when No. 1 Clemson defeated No. 7 Miami 38-3. Miami leads the series 6-5 and has won in its last two visits to Death Valley, but the Tigers have won the last two meetings by a combined score of 96-3.

Severe thunderstorms fell trees, knock out power to thousands in CNY (PS; Coin)

A line of brief but powerful thunderstorms tore down trees, closed roads and knocked out power to at least 25,000 customers today in Central New York.

Power outages were scattered across the region, from Auburn to Syracuse to Pulaski, according to National Grid’s outage page.

Wind gusts reached 58 mph in Oswego, according to records compiled by the National Weather Service.

Roads across the region were closed because of downed wires, trees or utility poles, including state highway 49 in Hastings, Oswego County; Route 11 in Preble, Cortland County; and Main Street near Route 90 in Locke, Cayuga County.

Winds gusts hit 40 mph about 2:30 p.m. in Fayetteville, where several trees in adjacent yards in Fayetteville were toppled. Trees were down in Syracuse, Marcellus and Canastota.

A big tree snapped on North Street in Marcellus, a Facebook user posted.

Pea-sized hail was reported from Auburn to Morrisville.
