Welcome to Blackout Wednesday!

Blackout Wednesday (also known as Black Wednesday, Drinksgiving, Thanksgiving Eve, Wacky Wednesday, Whiskey Wednesday, Deathlord Wednesday, Wednesday, Awkward Wednesday, or Big Wednesday) is a term for the night before the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. It is associated with binge drinking since very few people work on Thanksgiving, and most university students are home to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with their families,[1] which means that high school friends have an opportunity to catch up at the local tavern as they converge on their hometown.[2] The name refers to "blacking out", memory loss due to excessive alcohol intoxication. In suburbs of Chicago particular, Blackout Wednesday is sometimes a more popular partying night than even New Year's Eve or Saint Patrick's Day.[1] In some cities, it is the worst drunk driving night of the year.[3] Police departments increase patrols checking for drunk driving in many jurisdictions including in Indiana[4] and Minnesota.[5] MADD reports that the Thanksgiving holiday produces more people killed in drunk driving crashes than the Christmas holiday.[6]

Syracuse football's top commit, Duce Chestnut, will enroll early )247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football's highest-rated commit in the Class of 2021, defensive back Duce Chestnut, is set to sign early and enroll for the spring semester January, he confirmed via Twitter direct message. Sports Illustrated first reported the news.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Chestnut is a senior at Camden High School in New Jersey. He's rated three stars as well as the No. 31 cornerback and No. 408 overall prospect this cycle by 247Sports Composite. Chestnut, rated four stars by Rivals, committed to the Orange in August. He was recruited primarily by safeties coach Nick Monroe, who has been responsible for bringing in other standout defensive backs such as Andre Cisco and Trill Williams. Chestnut has also built a strong relationship with SU's first-year defensive coordinator, Tony White.

Chestnut's offer sheet also includes Baylor, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Ole Miss and West Virginia.

The News & Observer's Jonas Pope IV previews N.C. State's game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020. Will the Wolfpack be a little too comfortable and maybe overlook the Orange?

Syracuse Football: N.C. State defense is porous, too, but it stifled Liberty (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football will next host N.C. State this Saturday, and the Wolfpack is fairly sub-par on defense.

If there is something to get slightly excited about as it pertains to the Syracuse football home finale versus N.C. State this coming Saturday afternoon, it’s the fact that the Wolfpack is nearly as bad as the Orange on defense in the 2020 term.

That being said, this past Saturday in Raleigh, N.C., the Wolfpack held an explosive Liberty offense to just 279 total yards. N.C. State came away with a thrilling 15-14 victory over No. 21 and previously undefeated Liberty after a Wolfpack defender blocked a 39-yard field-goal attempt by the Flames with 1:20 remaining in the non-conference collision at Carter-Finley Stadium.

More than a month ago, Liberty traveled to the Hill and pummeled the ‘Cuse 38-21, giving the Flames their inaugural success against an Atlantic Coast Conference crew. In the process, Liberty racked up 520 yards of total offense versus the Orange.

The Wolfpack defense put forth an impressive showing in its bout with the Flames, whereas Syracuse football (1-8) looked absolutely dreadful in a 30-0 drubbing on the road at the hands of Louisville.

Now N.C. State (6-3), presently fifth in the ACC standings and certainly having positioned itself for a post-season bowl berth, will make the trip to Central New York.

‘Unfinished Business’: What the 2020 Season Means to Syracuse Football Players (SI; Payne)

If the college football gods were gracious enough to offer one free mulligan, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers would use it to stamp an asterisk next to this 2020 season. Unfortunately for the 1-8 ball coach, there's no such thing. Babers may get the benefit of the doubt, but not an asterisk.

For Orange players, the scenario is slightly different. The record counts, the stats count, but the year of eligibility doesn't. Thanks to the chaos created by the COVID-19 crisis, those brazen enough to buckle a chinstrap mid-pandemic won't be docked a year if things don't go according to plan.

This means different things to different players. It's an excuse for freshmen to get their feet wet a lot earlier than they normally would. An extra year to develop and learn with four full seasons coming right behind it. Freshman LB Stefon Thompson, who looked more like a seasoned vet against Louisville (7 tackles, 1 sack), says this year is void of any pressure.

"I just look at this year as like a learning year," Thompson shared with the media on Tuesday. "And it's a free year for me, so every rep I get, I know it doesn't count, but it's helping, and it's going to help in the long run."

Dallas Cowboys coach, former SU great Markus Paul hospitalized (DO; Hillman)

Former Syracuse All-American and current Dallas Cowboys strength and conditioning coach Markus Paul was taken to the hospital after collapsing at the Cowboys team facility Tuesday morning, his daughter Tabitha Paul confirmed to The Daily Orange.

Paul is currently at a local hospital and was pronounced brain dead, but he is still breathing, Tabitha said.

“My father has not passed away yet,” his daughter said. “There is still hope that he can pull through this.”

Paul tallied a school-record 19 interceptions during his illustrious career at SU from 1984 to 1988. As a senior, he was named a first team All-American. He was also named to Syracuse’s All-Century team in 1999.

Former Syracuse All-American Markus Paul hospitalized after heart attack (PS; Mink)

Markus Paul, a former All-American safety at Syracuse who is the head of strength and conditioning for the Dallas Cowboys, was taken to a local hospital Tuesday morning after collapsing inside the team’s facility, his sister said.

Paul suffered a heart attack and is undergoing tests in the hospital, said his sister Angie Taylor. She spoke by phone with Paul’s wife, who is with Paul at the hospital, around 1 p.m.

Nurses used the term “brain-dead” when describing Paul’s condition.

“We’re asking for people’s prayers,” Taylor told the Post-Standard. “We’re believers, and we’re believing in God for a miracle.”

The Cowboys canceled Tuesday’s practice over what the team initially called a non-coronavirus medical emergency involving a staff member. A Frisco County fire department spokesman confirmed one patient was transported to the hospital after responding to a call at the Cowboys’ facility around 7:30 Tuesday morning.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the Cowboys said Paul is undergoing additional tests.

Column: Florida State, Clemson butt heads as ACC remains largely silent (tomahawknation.com; Cox)

Unless you were living under Howard’s Rock since Sunday, you heard about the abrasive comments Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney made regarding Florida State and how they handled the postponement of Saturday’s game.

In an era where college football coaches are more and more resembling solemn politicians, careful to never slip out a quote that may seem critical, Swinney’s comments were that much more brash.

“This game was not canceled because of COVID-19. COVID-19 was just an excuse to cancel the game. I have no doubt their players wanted to play and would have played. And same with the coaches. To me, the Florida State administration forfeited the game,” said Swinney.

When Mike Norvell took the podium Monday for his weekly press conference, he was barraged with questions regarding Swinney’s outburst. The first-year Noles head coach was quick to contradict Swinney’s odd, gung-ho approach towards a worldwide pandemic.

“To that I’ll say that everyone here wanted to go out and compete. The protocols and procedures that are in place to ensure the safety of our student athletes is something that we don’t take lightly,” said Norvell.

“The fact that a symptomatic player practiced throughout the week and made the trip to Tallahassee raised a lot of concerns,” Norvell continued. “Everyone can handle things differently in their programs. We are concerned about our players being protected.”

Norvell was clear, concise, and calm as he shot down the immature and baseless accusations Swinney made. He explained that he had no sway in the decision to postpone the game, and the reasoning behind the postponement was “absolutely” because of COVID-19.

College Football Playoff Rankings prediction: SEC, ACC, Big Ten each start with three teams in top 10 (cbssports.com; Palm)

With the initial College Football Playoff Rankings for the 2020 season set to be released Tuesday night, we do not want to wait that long to get a taste of how the CFP Selection Committee will be ranking the top 25 teams in the nation. This is a warm up act for the warm up act, which are all of the CFP Rankings releases before the final one after conference championship week.

Check out the first College Football Playoff Rankings released Tuesday night.

Normally, I would detail here some of the criteria the CFP Selection Committee uses to rank the top 25 teams and choose the top four. However, nothing about 2020 is normal, and that includes the information available to the committee. Here is the entire list of criteria for 2020:

  • Eye test
  • Head-to-head record (if applicable)
  • Conference championship (if applicable)
That's it. No strength of schedule or relative offense or any other analytic because four conferences have statistically distanced themselves from the rest of college football by playing only conference games. For example, mathematically speaking, there is no way to compare teams from the SEC to teams from the Big Ten or any other league for that matter.

Miami football in CFP Top 10 helps prove ACC is competitive with SEC (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football team is ranked 10th in the initial 2020 College Football Playoff rankings proving the ACC is competitive with the SEC.

The Miami football program is 10th in the initial 2020 College Football Playoff rankings. The ACC has three teams in the Top 10 and four in the top 20 including the Miami football program. Notre Dame was ranked second behind Alabama and Clemson third in the inaugural 2020 CFP rankings released on Tuesday night.

If Clemson and Notre Dame win out and the Tigers defeat the Fighting Irish in the ACC Championship Game, the ACC will have two teams in the College Football Playoff for the first time. It would be only the second time two teams from the same conference reach the CFP in the same season.

Alabama and Georgia played in the College Football Playoff Championship Game following the 2017 season. The Bulldogs are ninth in the rankings released Tuesday night despite a 5-2 record and decisive losses to Alabama and Florida. Texas A&M who defeated Florida is fifth and the Gators are sixth in the CFP rankings.

North Carolina is the fourth ACC team in the CFP rankings at 19. The ACC and SEC both have four teams in the top 20. Auburn at 22 gives the SEC five teams in the rankings. The Big 10 matched the SEC with five teams in the rankings, but just two in the top 10. Ohio State is fourth and Northwestern eighth.

Coronavirus and Columbus bread: How the pandemic is changing a holiday tradition (PS; Cazentre)

The smell of freshly baked loaves. The camaraderie of the group outside the building. The cheers, mostly ironic, when it starts to snow or rain.

The coronavirus is changing a lot of traditions this holiday season, and in Syracuse that includes the bread line at Columbus Baking on the North Side.

This Thanksgiving, owner Jim Retzos says, there will be no lines.

But there will be bread.

Columbus bakers are approaching this Thanksgiving a little differently. They’re getting to the ovens extra early, and will make as much bread as they can before the shop opens on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.

After opening, on both Wednesday and Thursday, there will no closing of the doors while the staff replenishes the supply. In a typical year, that often forces the line to wait (and grow), for a half hour to an hour or more.

“We’ll make as much as we can before we open,” Retzos said. “Then we let people in to buy their bread and leave. No lines. No waiting. And when the bread is gone, it’s gone.”
