Welcome to Cyber Monday!

Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and is the largest online shopping day of the year in the United States. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation, while working with Scott Silverman and others, at Shop.org. In 2005, shortly before Thanksgiving, Shop.org put out a press release highlighting the growing amount of sales that took place on the day. Research from 2004 had shown that the day was the 12th largest online shopping day of the year. After the term made its debut, it has been used as a marketing tool by retailers, and the public has embraced the day. As of 2017, sales have increased each year since its inception, transforming the day from the 12th largest online shopping day, to the largest. In 2006 there were $610 million of sales on the day, and in 2016 there were $3.45 billion in sales, marking the first time online sales had passed $3 billion on a single day in the United States. Half or more of the sales from the day are from work computers, suggesting that consumers still want to do more shopping after Black Friday, want to take advantage of the days' deals, or want to hide the gifts they are buying for family members.

What happened on Syracuse's disastrous final series vs. NC State (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football garnered its most prominent national spotlight of the year on Saturday when quarterback Rex Culpepper spiked the ball on 4th down to end the team's 36-29 loss against North Carolina State. After taking an 11-yard sack on 3rd and goal from the 7-yard line, Culpepper waved his hands down as his teammates ran back to the line and got the snap off just before time expired. But as his receivers went to burst off the line of scrimmage, Culpepper slung the ball into the ground.

Speaking after the game, Orange head coach Dino Babers said that his team practices situational football like that and, when asked his level of responsibility, said everything that happens during a game can fall on him. But Babers didn't share any context as to why Culpepper might have thought it wasn't fourth down, and Culpepper was not made available for an interview by SU Athletics.

"I think you guys saw it," Babers said. "Obviously, you want to throw that ball. The third-down call, you have to throw it away and then you play the fourth-down snap. And if you're going to go on fourth down, you have to throw the ball. Nobody wants to spike it on fourth down."

Taj Harris records career-high 13 catches in loss to NC State (DO; Hillman)

Taj Harris had his hands on his head as he reached the Syracuse huddle. He just had kept SU’s drive alive, again, and the Orange were inside the 10-yard line. Now, he had a chance to tie the game with less than a minute remaining.

On the third down, he dashed into the end zone, faked left and ran right toward the out-of-bounds line. He was open, but his quarterback Rex Culpepper was tackled to the ground. Harris jogged back to the line of scrimmage, and an ill-advised fourth-down spike ended Syracuse’s last chance for a second home win in 2020.

“Obviously you want to throw that ball, the third-down call, you have to throw it away, then you play the fourth-down snap,” head coach Dino Babers said. “And if you have to go on fourth down, you’re going to have to throw the ball.”

Harris was perhaps Syracuse’s most-reliable offensive weapon on Saturday, catching 13 passes — more than half of Culpepper’s total completions — for 146 yards and a touchdown. But the potential 14th, a drop of a would-be touchdown, will linger with Babers.

Monday Musings: Syracuse Target Blowing Up, Two Commits Will Sign Early (SI; McAllister)

1. Syracuse target Calvin Johnson has been one of the hottest recruits on the trail in recent weeks. Johnson committed to Navy in June as a quarterback, but that has not stopped power five schools from pursuing. Syracuse was the first power five opportunity when they offered on November 13th. Since then, Duke, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Florida State, Penn State, Mississippi State and Iowa have all offered. He is being recruited as an athlete, but most like him as a defensive back. Syracuse is certainly still involved there, but the competition just stiffened quite a bit.

2. One of Syracuse's most high profile commits is offensive tackle Enrique Cruz. Cruz recently told us that he is signing early with Syracuse. That is huge news. Offensive line has been an ongoing issue for two seasons, and the addition of Cruz is massive. He is extremely athletic, very long and moves incredibly well. Cruz has seemingly limitless potential, so getting him to sign early is important for the Orange.

3. In the discussion for the most underrated of Syracuse football's commits in the 2021 class is defensive end Jatius Geer. He finished his senior season with nine sacks, 30 tackles for loss and 61 tackles, all in just six games. Geer also said he has solidified his plans to sign early with Syracuse. More good news for Syracuse on the recruiting front. Geer is going to be a really good one for the Orange.

College football odds: Another huge point spread as Syracuse faces No. 2 Notre Dame (PS; $; Owens)

While there has been little to celebrate this season for the Syracuse football team, the Orange has at least made gamblers happy on occasion.

While SU dropped to a dismal 1-9 with a 36-29 loss to North Carolina State on Saturday, the Orange covered the 14-point spread to lift its record to 5-5 this season against the betting line.

If you plan on betting on the Orange this week against No. 2 Notre Dame, you’ll once again be getting a bunch of points. The website BetOnline listed the Fighting Irish as a 33.5-point favorite over Syracuse.

SU needed Babers to field a team this year. Will that factor into how it views the coach? (stock watch) (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse football is 1-9 after a 36-29 loss to North Carolina State on Saturday afternoon.

This week’s stock watch takes a look at the players and themes rising and falling heading into the next opponent, which will be No. 2 Notre Dame next weekend in South Bend, Indiana.

Stock up: Babers made a commitment to field a team in a pandemic. Will Syracuse remember that down the road?

We’ll dig into this more this offseason, but the track record for coaches rebounding from a one-win or 10-loss season has mixed results.

Some who have done it, such as Matt Rhule (Baylor), George O’Leary (Central Florida), Mario Cristobal (Florida International), Mike MacIntyre (Colorado), Greg Schiano (Rutgers) and Philip Montgomery (Tulsa), largely did so after overhauling a complete teardown and rebuild of a burning program. Some succeeded for the long haul. Others quickly bolted for a new job. Some got fired.

https://ncstate./news/dino-babers-credits-nc-state-wolfpack-football-for-stopping-syracuse-s-run (; Carter)

Much of the attention following NC State’s 36-29 win over Syracuse from the Orange perspective centered around the chaotic ending that began with SU senior quarterback Rex Culpepper being sacked by Wolfpack redshirt sophomore linebacker Payton Wilson on third and goal.

The 11-yard loss on the play back to the NC State 18-yard line was not near as devastating as the fact that Syracuse head coach Dino Babers had no timeouts to stop the clock. The time remaining continued to tick under 10 and then five seconds as Culpepper and his teammates hustled to line up. Apparently lost in the chaos to Culpepper was that it was now fourth down.

With his mind squarely on clocking it, Culpepper spiked the ball with one second left. The result was a turnover on downs.

“Everyone wants to talk about the last play, but the last time I checked there was like 70 plays on offense, 70 plays on defense,” Babers said in his postgame comments. “There were 140 snaps in that game, and all of them were important.”

The Wolfpack defense held Syracuse to 257 total yards. (ACC media)

What particularly stood out to Babers was Syracuse’s inability to run the football on offense or stop NC State on third downs defensively.

The Orange finished Saturday with a season-low total of thee yards rushing, and freshman running back Sean Tucker, who had averaged 80.7 yards per game over his last six contests, was held to just 18 yards on 16 carries against the Wolfpack.

As Babers described it, “You look at the run game, there’s absolutely nothing.”

“Those guys played in a heavy run front in the entire game,” Babers added. “They just did not want our tailbacks to have any success. It was: they were forcing us to beat them with the throw.

Syracuse blows early lead to NC State and keeps ACC cellar to itself - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Probably the strangest Senior Day in Syracuse football unfolded on Saturday afternoon. In the last game of a home schedule without fans in attendance, the Orange had a kickoff return touchdown, a 60-yard touchdown pass, a safety, and an improbable end of the game when Rex Culpepper spiked the ball on fourth-and-goal at the North Carolina State 19.

The spike to stop the clock did not officially end the game, as it came with one second remaining, but it did ice the game for the Wolfpack (7-3, 6-3 ACC), who claimed a 36-29 victory over the Orange (1-9, 1-8). It also ended the second-longest drive in yards and longest drive in time of the day for SU, who struggled on offense, particularly on the ground, generating a net of three rushing yards on 25 attempts.

After a field goal extended the NC State lead to seven with 5:20 remaining, Syracuse drove from their own 25 to the ‘Pack 20, where they used their last timeout prior to a third-and-ten. The Orange converted on the following play, setting up a first-and-goal at the nine. Following a run for two yards on first, Culpepper scrambled out of bounds on second down, then scrambled again in the pocket when no receiver came free on third, eventually getting sacked at the 18.

With the clock running, a couple receivers were slow to return to the line of scrimmage and get set. They did, however, get into proper alignment in time for the fated fourth down snap, which Culpepper threw to the ground in an effort to stop the clock.

Former teammates, coaches remember Syracuse football great Markus Paul (DO; Hillman)

David Holmes remembers how Markus Paul bought pizza and hosted weekly defensive backs’ film sessions at Paul’s Winding Ridge Road apartment. Carl Jenkins recalled that Paul brought multiple New York Giants players to Jenkins’ organization to mentor young Black and Latino kids in Rockland County. Troy Martin said Paul invited him to his apartment and eased his frustrations about leaving south Florida when he was a freshman.

Everyone has a story about the former safety’s compassion, Paul’s former teammates said.

“Markus was just a good soul,” former Syracuse teammate Pat Davis said. “He tried to look out for everybody. He just always let you know, if you needed somebody to talk to, you were having a bad day — he was there for you.”

Paul died Wednesday after experiencing a heart attack in the Dallas Cowboys facility the day prior. He was 54.

Axe: An unforgettable weekend for SU sports (PS; $; Axe)

The great philosopher Ferris Bueller once opined that “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

We need to apply that to a weekend of mind-blowing things that happened to Syracuse University football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

I know 2020 has played a constant game of “hold my beer,” but let us take a moment to reflect on a few extraordinary events:

-Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim admitted that his team should have never been on the floor on Friday night at the Dome.

Comparing Apples and Oranges - 11/27/20 (RX; HM)

Comparing Apples and Oranges - 11/27/20

"like apples and oranges" - two items or groups of items so different as to defy comparison.

Welcome to the article literally no one was asking for: a comparison of the Apple Bowl contestants (the Washington Huskies vs. the Washington State Cougars) of the Pac-12 versus the Syracuse Orange of the ACC.

Why would I make such a comparison, you ask?
Glad you asked. Here are the similarities:

1. The three schools are the northern-most members of their conferences, which span one of the two U.S. coastlines from Canada to the southern-most corners of the nation. Just how far north are these schools?

School NameCity, StateLattitude
Univ. of WashingtonSeattle, WA47.6062° N
Washington State U.Pullman, WA46.7298° N
Syracuse UniversitySyracuse, NY43.0481° N

Yes, the two Washington schools are further north than Syracuse, although it's fairly close.
2. While there is some football talent in the area, all three of these schools rely on recruits from the southern region of their respective conference footprints, along with an occasional player from outside the footprint altogether.

3. All of these teams have had former periods of football glory, but to be honest, that has been the exception rather than the rule, as shown by this table:

Photos: An old Woolworth’s 5-and-dime store still echoes in downtown Syracuse building (PS; $; Moriarty)

The old Woolworth’s five-and-dime store opened in downtown Syracuse in 1941 and closed in 1979, but the structure has changed little since then.

Rite Aid pharmacy bought the building after Woolworth’s closed and Rite Aid operated until 2019. But it only used the first floor and left the basement and second and third floors untouched.

Some of the remnants: customer escalators, employee graffiti dating back to the 1950s and the Woolworth’s store safe.

Seagate Asset Management of North Bergen, New Jersey, bought the building last year and is making plans for a mixed-use redevelopment of the building.

Martin McDermott, a sales agent with JF Real Estate, said the developer is close to signing a lease with a retail tenant for the first floor. The retailer would be new to downtown, he said.

With a redevelopment in the offing, here’s a look at the building’s past and present.
