Welcome to National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day!

It has brought warmth and cheer to your home over the holiday season, but all things must come to an end, and it's time to take down the Christmas tree. While some people may take it down on the day after Christmas, on New Year's Day, or the day after, there is some reasoning behind taking it down on January 6, on National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day. This date officially marks the end of the holiday season, as it is the last of the 12 days of Christmas, and is the day on which Epiphany takes place.

How to Observe

Take down your Christmas tree! The creator of the day, Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, has suggested making it into an event by inviting over family or friends to help you out and providing them with appetizers and cocktails. If you have a real tree, consider recycling it for wildlife.

Syracuse Expressing Interest in Two Defensive End Prospects (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football is still looking to add to its 2021 class despite signing 19 players last month with one more who remains verbally committed and is expected to sign in February. They are currently expressing interest in two class of 2021 defensive end prospects.

The first is Chase Simmons out of North Myrtle Beach High in South Carolina. Simmons is listed at 6-4, 240 pounds and is currently committed to Coastal Carolina. Simmons verbally committed back in November, but did not sign during the early signing period.

Simmons says he hears from Syracuse every other day, and speaks most often to defensive coordinator Tony White, defensive line coach Vince Reynolds and Director of High School Relations Ryan Bartow. The message from the Syracuse staff is clear, that they like his ability on the field.

Simmons remains committed to Coastal Carolina for now, but Michigan State, in-state South Carolina and Tennessee are also expressing interest in addition to Syracuse. He is one to watch over the next month or so.

The other defensive end Syracuse is looking at is Jonathan Brown out of Riverwood High in Georgia. The 6-3, 230 pound prospect holds an offer from Troy, Tennessee State and several others.

Syracuse football RB Jawhar Jordan enters transfer portal (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football running back Jawhar Jordan entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. Jordan becomes the seventh Orange player to submit his name in the last five weeks and the third offensive contributor, following senior tight end Aaron Hackett and senior slot receiver Nykeim Johnson.

A redshirt freshman, Jordan entered Week 1 of the 2020 season as the Orange's starting running back. But in the third game of the year, he suffered a season-ending lower leg injury, finishing the campaign with 72 rushing yards on 29 carries. As a true freshman, the Farmingdale, N.Y., native logged 192 combined rushing and receiving yards, finding the end zone once.

Jordan is viewed as one of the best athletes on the SU roster. At 5 feet, 9 inches and 172 pounds, he was clocked at 4.37 seconds in the 40-yard dash two springs ago. The three-star prospect from the Class of 2018 took an extra year to qualify academically before arriving on campus in January 2019. He was rated the No. 19 all-purpose back in his cycle after a breakout senior season at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz.

Game Day Program

The second road game for the 1919 Panthers was a train trip on the P. & L. E. to Syracuse, New York to take on the Syracuse Orangemen at Archbold Stadium. Frank "Buck" O'Neill was in his eighth and final year at the helm of the Syracuse eleven and he had a veteran team that stood 3-0, having just beaten a strong Army team. Starting guard, Doc Alexander, was a 1919 consensus All-American and center Harry Robertson also received mention.[33][28]

Carlton Ketchum of The Pittsburgh Press set the scene: "Is the old Pitt Panther in for a tail-twisting today? Well, if you buy your eye-glasses in Syracuse, there's nothing else to it. The Syracusans are reported to be in the best condition of the season. They have been thinking of little else than the Pitt game ever since their campaign opened. They want to beat Pitt and that's all there is to it." The Panthers are fairly healthy as DeHart, Mervis and Morrow have mended. Pitt's attack should be able to make it interesting for the Orangemen.[34]

According to Harry Keck of the Post-Gazette Coach Warner was worried: "Unless I miss my guess by a whole lot, Syracuse will go into tomorrow's game feeling itself the underdog, while it will require a bit of picking up to make my men fight their hardest. Some sort of a letdown is to be expected from a team which was primed last week as was Pitt for West Virginia. If that letdown is too great there is a real reason for us to worry over the outcome of the Syracuse game."[35]

The 1921 Owl Year Book had the best recap: "Pitt, 3; Syracuse, 24. This is the game we would like to forget. It was on this occasion that Pitt suffered its first defeat in five seasons. We hand it to Syracuse; they turned the trick in a very capable manner. The Orange team gave decided evidence of genuine superiority, in both offense and defense. Pitt fought hard and with the best that was in them, but to no avail. Andy Hasting's field goal from the thirty-yard line was all that saved Pitt from a shutout."[36]

The Post-Gazette gave it historical perspective: "Three years ago this month one of the greatest upsets in the history of football was put across on the gridiron of the magnificent Archbold Stadium in this city. The great Syracuse team with its boasted All-American stars was crushed in the path of Glenn Warner's steam rolling Pitt Panther machine succumbing by a score of 30 to 0, when the entire football world was looking for a Syracuse triumph. Today on the same gridiron, with Pitt, unbeaten by a collegiate foe through four full seasons, and parts of two others and the favorite in the advance dope, the well-known worm turned. Once more the dope was upset a thousand ways. Syracuse winning by the decisive score of 24 to 3, and winning on its merits."[37] The Orangemen finished the season with an 8-3 record.[33]

Quarterback Willard Ackley scored all but six of the Syracuse points. He ran for two touchdowns, kicked three touchdown goals and added a field goal from placement. Substitute fullback D. Martin scored the other Syracuse touchdown.[38]

Pitt Captain Jimmy Dehart praised the Orangemen: "I want to say that Syracuse played absolutely clean and fair football and deserved to win. It is the best team I ever have played against."[37]

Worst FBS Bowl Performances (RX; HM)

Worst FBS Bowl Performances

Unless you live in a cave, you probably know by now that the ACC laid a goose egg in bowl season (0-6). CBS ranked the 2020-21 College football bowl records by conference. As they pointed out, the ACC was disappointing...
  1. Big XII 5-0
  2. MAC 2-0
  3. Sun Belt 4-1
  4. SEC 6-2
  5. Big Ten 3-1
  6. Independents* 3-1
  7. Mountain West 2-1
  8. American 1-5
  9. Pac-12 0-2
  10. ACC* 0-6
  11. C-USA 0-6

* Yes, this year Notre Dame counted as an ACC bowl loss.

It was bad, I'll admit.
However, this has emboldened some fans of American Athletic Conference teams to brag that their conference was better because they at least won one bowl game...
Don't talk smack unless you know how!

Report: 2021 Syracuse St. Patrick’s Parade canceled (PS; Pucci)

For the second consecutive year, the Syracuse St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Parade Committee President Janet Higgins told NewsChannel 9 earlier this morning that the parade, which had been scheduled for March 13, will not happen.

She said the committee plans to bring the parade back in 2022.

The 2020 Syracuse St. Patrick’s Day Parade, among the largest annual events in downtown Syracuse, was among the first public events to be canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The parade committee originally hoped to hold the parade later in 2020 before postponing it until March 2021 and now, until 2022.
