Welcome to International Kiss a Ginger Day!

International Kiss a Ginger Day was created by Canadian Derek Forgie in 2009, as a response to Kick a Ginger Day, which had been created the previous year. Forgie started a Facebook group for the day and invited eight of his red-haired friends to it. To his surprise, the group and the day soon took off. On the day, red-haired people—or gingers—are given kisses if they want to receive them.

Red is the rarest hair color, with only 2 percent of the world's population having it. Most redheads are of northern or western European ancestry; the highest percentage of redheads come from Scotland, followed by Ireland. Redheads are often stereotyped as having a fiery temper. Kick a Ginger Day led to many redheads being bullied. In ancient Greece, some redheads were considered to be vampires. Many redheads were killed in Europe between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries because they were perceived to be associated with witchcraft.

Red hair is caused by a mutated MC1R gene. If both parents carry this gene—even if they don't have red hair themselves—their child has a one in four chance of being born with red hair. Those with red hair actually have less hair on their heads. A redhead has on average 90,000 strands of hair on their head, while blondes have about 110,000, and brunettes have 140,000. What redheads lack in number they make up in thickness, though, as strands of red hair are thicker than the strands of other colors. Red hair also strongly holds its pigment; it is hard to dye red hair a different color unless it is bleached first.

NFL Draft Profile: Andre Cisco (SI; McAllister)

We spoke with NFL Draft Bible's Ric Serritella to get an in depth look at Syracuse safety Andre Cisco and his draft prospects.

THE BACKGROUND: "This was supposed to be the guy that ended the streak since Justin Pugh, the last Syracuse first round selection," Serritella said. "Andre Cisco I have here at last check, 5-foot-11 and 6/8 inches, 203 pounds. We kind of projected him to run in that 4.50 range for the 40 yard dash. Queens, New York native, attended IMG. Parents are divorced, two sisters.

"In terms of a person, coaches are going to love that he's self driven, he's very mature and he's a self motivated player. He was actually a three year starter in high school at cornerback before moving over to safety. So there's a good foundation of cover skills."

STRENGTHS: "At Syracuse, he just proved to be a true ball hawk. We project him at the next level as a boundary safety. He's going to thrive playing in the box and stuffing the run. That's what he does very well. He has great instincts, shows good anticipation. Very good straight line speed from point A to point B. In ball pursuit, he's very quick there. An explosive hitter. A workout warrior. Had there been a combine or if he does get an opportunity to compete at the combine, I do think that is where he kind of pick up some ground on what I believe is a pretty strong safety class.

Josh Black, former Harlem star, is all in on one more season with Syracuse football (rrstar.com; Taft)

Josh Black announced last month that he would return for one more season in an effort to finish up his Syracuse football career on a high note.

This week he sat down as the guest on the weekly sports podcast "Not Just a Game" to explain why. The three biggest reasons for his decision were 1) To develop his football skills more; 2) To further his education for free; and 3) Because he still has business to take care of at Syracuse.

Football and education

"It was one of those decisions that I thought about a lot," Black said. The podcast "Not Just a Game" featuring Black as the guest will be released at rrstar.com Thursday night. "But by the time the end of the season happened, I figured out this was a no-brainer for me to come back next season. One, I get to develop my football skills more. Personally, I don't feel like I'm quite as developed as I want to be before I pursue the next level.

"Two, you can't beat free education. That's a whole another year of education, and just off those two things it was a no-brainer for me.

"I didn't want to go 20 years in the future and look back on this situation and say 'Man, I should have taken that extra year of schooling, not only to make myself better at football, but to become a better student."

Syracuse Football: Dwight Freeney, Marvin Harrison totally snubbed (itlh; Adler)

The 2021 College Football Hall of Fame class doesn’t include Syracuse football legends Dwight Freeney and Marvin Harrison.

Dwight Freeney and Marvin Harrison, two of the best-ever to suit up for Syracuse football in the program’s history, both were denied entry into the College Football Hall of Fame as the 2021 class got announced on Monday by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame.

All of the 11 players who make up the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame group had terrific collegiate careers, so I don’t want to take anything away from them.

And perhaps expecting both Freeney and Harrison to make the cut in the same year is a bit unrealistic. However, for neither of them to get inducted, putting my bias for the Orange to the side, is a tad ridiculous.

In any event, the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class is:
Harris Barton, North Carolina OT
David Fulcher, Arizona State DB
Dan Morgan, Miami (Fla.) LB
Carson Palmer, Southern California QB
Tony Romo, Eastern Illinois QB
Kenneth Sims, Texas DT
C.J. Spiller, Clemson RB/KR
Darren Sproles, Kansas State RB
Aaron Taylor, Notre Dame OT
Andre Tippett, Iowa DE
Al Wilson, Tennessee LB

The ballot for the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame, released last June, featured 78 players and seven coaches from the FBS, as well as 99 players and 33 coaches from the divisional ranks, per an announcement at that time.

In a recent ranking of the top-25 players in the history of the ‘Cuse football team, my wonderful colleague Josh Peelman arranged both Freeney and Harrison in the top 10, and deservingly so.

When the ballot for the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame got disclosed, I penned a column noting that Freeney, an All-American defensive end, was a new candidate for induction, while excellent kick returner/wide receiver Harrison was on the ballot for the third-consecutive year, as Nate Mink of Syracuse.com had reported.

Bowl Grades For Every Team, Conference: How Did Everyone Do This Bowl Season? (CFN; Fiutak)

We still have one relatively important game to go, but until then – and with this updated after the College Football Playoff National Championship – how did every team do this bowl season compared to expectations?

Which teams showed up, which teams didn’t, and how did all of the conferences do?

We assign a grade for each team based on relative performance. Winning the game is all that really matters, but did the team play up to its capabilities, or did it have to push a bit too hard against an inferior opponent? Did the losing team come up with a strong fight, or did it get embarrassed?

They’re the final exams, and here’s how they all did.

2020-2021 Team, Conference Bowl Grades
ACC | American | Big Ten | Big 12 | C-USA | Ind
MAC | Mountain West | Pac-12 | SEC | Sun Belt

ACC Bowl Grades

ACC Bowl Grade: C-

ACC Straight Up: 0-6
ACC Against The Spread: 1-5

Okay, here’s why the ACC catches a huge grade break despite going 0-for-the-bowl season and getting blasted in two College Football Playoff semifinals – that’s sort of what was supposed to happen.

Clemson is the outlier. It was favored to beat Ohio State, but the team that showed up in New Orleans was not the Ohio State of the regular season. Notre Dame was supposed to get housed by Bama. Miami gets a break because it fought back after losing D’Eriq King, North Carolina was great despite missing a slew of stars, NC State lost a 50/50 game, and Wake Forest was a double-digit dog to Wisconsin.

Clemson Bowl Grade: C-

ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL

Line: Clemson -7.5, o/u: 65.5
Prediction: Clemson 38, Ohio State 27
Final Score: Ohio State 49, Clemson 28
– 5 Thoughts Reaction, Analysis: Sugar Bowl

It’s hard to get too mad at a team that ran into a buzzsaw. Lost in how good Ohio State was how good Clemson looked and played at the start, up 14-7 after the first ten minutes with the offense running like normal. There wasn’t any hope against the deep passes, the Buckeyes looked and played a half-click quicker, and it was simply one of those games when one amazing team was on and the other couldn’t do anything about it.

Gophers football lands Clemson grad transfer, DT Nyles Pinckney (fox9.com; Wald)

The University of Minnesota football team added talent to its defensive line on Monday with a commitment from former Clemson defensive tackle Nyles Pinckney.

Pinckney is a 6-1, 300-pound defensive tackle and is a graduate transfer who will be immediately eligible for the 2021 season. Pinckney was selected third team All-ACC in 2019, and played in 55 career games over four years at Clemson. He played more than 1,110 snaps.

Pinckney played in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Ohio State, a 49-28 loss for the Tigers, and made three tackles in the game. He finished the 2020 season with 22 tackles, 12 solo tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery. He had 23 tackles and a forced fumble in the 2018 season.

The Gophers are scheduled to open the 2021 regular season Sept. 2 against Ohio State. Minnesota finished the 2020 season 3-4 and was one of several schools to opt out of bowl games due to COVID-19.

The 2021 Way-Too-Early college football top 25 (espn.com; Schlabach)

Even in a 2020 college football season that featured more starts and stops than Los Angeles traffic, there were a handful of near certainties, such as Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State reaching the College Football Playoff.

Even a pandemic couldn't balance power in the most top-heavy sport.

Will we finally see those heavyweights fall back in 2021? Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence has already declared for the NFL draft. Will Alabama's Mac Jones and Ohio State's Justin Fields be next? Will it be enough for programs such as Georgia, North Carolina and Texas A&M to close the gap on teams that have dominated their conferences for much of the past decade?

We'll have to wait about eight months to find out.

For now, here's the first edition of the 2021 Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings, featuring projected returning starters, starters who might leave, key additions and outlooks for each team.

( * Denotes players who have already announced they're leaving for the NFL draft, transferring or not returning to their current programs for other reasons.)

1. Clemson Tigers

2020 record: 10-2, 8-1 ACC
Projected returning starters: five offense, 10 defense, one special teams

Projected losses: QB Trevor Lawrence*, RB Travis Etienne*, WR Amari Rodgers*, CB Derion Kendrick, LB Baylon Spector, FS Nolan Turner, OT Jackson Carman*

Key additions: LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr., RB Will Shipley, DT Payton Page, WR Beaux Collins

Outlook: The Tigers' shortcomings were exposed in the CFP for the second season in a row, as they were pushed around on defense and couldn't protect Lawrence. This time, at least, those problems might be blamed on their youth and inexperience. A potential No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, Lawrence, as well as Etienne, will be remembered as one of the best players in school history. Rodgers on the perimeter is another big loss.

The good news is Clemson has a more-than-capable quarterback in waiting: freshman D.J. Uiagalelei, who threw for 781 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in the two games when Lawrence was sidelined because of COVID-19. Star wide receiver Justyn Ross might be back from a neck injury, along with Joseph Ngata. There isn't an obvious successor at tailback, so that will be a focus in the spring. Three starting offensive linemen are expected back.

The defense was pretty young in 2020 and should only get better; six of its 14 leading tacklers were sophomores, and freshmen Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee and Trenton Simpson might have been the best players on that unit. Clemson has the clearest path to the CFP, especially with Notre Dame heading back out of the ACC. The Tigers open the season against Georgia in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the winner will be No. 1 in the polls after Week 1.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide

2020 record: 13-0
Projected returning starters: four offense, nine defense, one special teams

Projected losses: QB Mac Jones, RB Najee Harris, WR DeVonta Smith, WR Jaylen Waddle, OT Alex Leatherwood, C Landon Dickerson, G Deonte Brown, LB Dylan Moses, CB Patrick Surtain II, TE Miller Forristall

Key additions: OT Tommy Brockermeyer, OT J.C. Latham, OLB Dallas Turner, DT Damon Payne, ATH Ga'Quincy McKinstry, RB Camar Wheaton, CB Khyree Jackson

Outlook: The Crimson Tide are more than likely going to lose a slew of players to the NFL draft, including potential first-rounders Jones, Smith, Waddle, Surtain and Harris. Perhaps no program has assembled as much talent as Alabama, however, and coach Nick Saban has capable replacements ready to go.

Still, Alabama is losing a lot of experience, as well as offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, whom Texas hired as its new coach. More times than not, the Tide figure it out. Former Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien might be Saban's top choice to replace Sarkisian. Bryce Young was the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the 2020 ESPN 300 and is Jones' heir apparent. Running backs Brian Robinson Jr., Jase McClellan and oft-injured Trey Sanders will try to fill Harris' shoes. Replacing Smith and Waddle won't be easy; John Metchie III and Slade Bolden are next in line.

Moses was the only senior starting on defense, although a handful of juniors and redshirt sophomores might leave for the NFL draft. The Tide open the 2021 season against Miami and play SEC road games at Auburn, Florida, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.

3. Oklahoma Sooners

2020 record: 9-2 (6-2 Big 12)
Projected returning starters: six offense, eight defense, two special teams

Projected losses: OT Adrian Ealy*, OT Erik Swenson, C Creed Humphrey*, RB Rhamondre Stevenson*, DE Ronnie Perkins*, CB Tre Brown*, DB Tre Norwood*, WR Charleston Rambo

Key additions: RB Kennedy Brooks, WR Mario Williams Jr., OT Savion Byrd, QB Caleb Williams, WR Billy Bowman Jr., OLB Clayton Smith

247Sports debuts 2021 college football top 25 rankings (247sports.com; Hellman)

1. ALABAMA (5)
The Crimson Tide check in at No. 1 overall in our way-to-early preseason rankings for 2021. Alabama gets all but one first-place vote from our experts.. With the Alabama season just ending, many NFL decisions are yet to be made. Can Alabama get some surprises back the way Dylan Moses and Najee Harris committed to returns in 2020? Quarterback Mac Jones held off five-star recruit Bryce Young and put in a Heisman-finalist season as Alabama’s starter. But 2021 appears to be the year Young takes over, and he already has Heisman Trophy hype with the fifth-best odds, according to SportsLine. Alabama also transitions to a new offensive coordinator in the offseason after the departure of Steve Sarkisian to become head coach at Texas.

2. OKLAHOMA (1)
The Sooners looked quite explosive in bowl season, and return star Spencer Rattler at quarterback with Heisman Trophy hopes. All of 247Sports’ national experts think highly of Oklahoma in 2021, but analyst Brandon Marcello sees enough from Lincoln Riley and company to rank OU as the top team in the country. Oklahoma won its last eight games of the season to finish with a 9-2 overall record and a Big 12 Championship. OU smashed Florida, 55-20, in the Cotton Bowl behind three touchdowns from Rattler and a combined 296 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Rhamondre Stevenson and Marcus Major.

3. CLEMSON
Dabo Swinney has never had a problem in the motivation department, and a bitter end to the 2020 season should serve as plenty of fuel moving forward. Clemson says goodbye to some big stars, none bigger than quarterback Trevor Lawrence, but has another major quarterback ready to go with D.J. Uiagalelei. Uiagalelei stepped in for Lawrence in two starts as a freshman. Clemson did not receive any first-place votes from our experts, but the expectations are still high for the top-rated ACC team with five-straight conference titles.

4. GEORGIA
Georgia has not lost a game since JT Daniels got healthy and became the starting quarterback. And while draft eligible, Daniels announced plans to return to Athens shortly after the team beat Cincinnati in bowl season. Georgia finished 8-2 thanks to a late field goal to beat Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl. Daniels logged 1,231 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and two picks since he took over. And 2021 begins with a bang, pending COVID-19 schedule changes, Sept. 4 against Clemson.

5. OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes compete tonight for a national title, and 2021 looks bright no matter what players on the fence decide when it comes to the NFL Draft. Ohio State will still be very dangerous in the passing game without Chris Olave. Garrett Wilson heads into tonight’s game with a team-high 673 yards in seven games. Justin Fields is expected to turn pro as one of the top overall prospects in the draft, so Ryan Day will spend spring breaking in a new QB-1 in Columbus.

6. NORTH CAROLINA
Is Mack Brown’s third season back in Chapel Hill the breakthrough season? UNC rose to a bowl team in his first season, and finished as a top 25 in Year 2. Now Brown and quarterback Sam Howell head into 2021 with the biggest expectations so far. Howell, fresh off a 3,500-yard, 30-touchdown season, heads into next year as a Heisman Trophy candidate and top NFL Draft prospect.

“This is going to be a special team,” Brown said after a loss to Texas A&M ended the season. “Our three-and-a-half quarters against Notre Dame showed that. Tonight we showed that. We've got to get more experience. We've got to get more depth. On January 19th we'll have 12 more guys coming in that'll have a great spring practice and they'll get ready. But we're about to be really good, and I'm excited about that. I told the players that tonight. Thanks for getting us here. Thanks for giving us a chance to win. When we come back, we want to win.”

Clemson, Alabama headline early college football 2021 top 25 (orlandosentinel.com; Murschel)

1. Clemson
The Buzz: Trevor Lawrence may be gone, but quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei is talented enough to keep Clemson from suffering much of a dropoff in 2021. The Tigers have dominated the ACC and, outside of Miami and North Carolina, they shouldn’t have much of a challenge reaching the playoff semifinals next season.

2. Alabama
The Buzz: Attrition will be the biggest hurdle facing Alabama during the offseason, with quarterback Mac Jones, running back Najee Harris and receiver DeVonta Smith among a group of players expected to move to the NFL. But the Crimson Tide has a solid core of young players coming back and this program has finished ranked in the top four nationally six of the past seven years.

3. Ohio State
The Buzz: Ohio State is coming off its second appearance in a College Football Playoff National Championship Game since 2014 and the first under coach Ryan Day. Quarterback Justin Fields led the Buckeyes to back-to-back playoff appearances, but his departure would leave the program searching for a strong starting signal caller.

Notre Dame football ranked in top-10 of recent 2021 rankings (slapthesign.com; Weiss)

The Notre Dame football team is coming off a 10-2 season and was recently ranked in the top-10 of 2021 college football ranking.

The 2020 Notre Dame football team was a special one, battling through the pandemic to go undefeated during the regular season. The Irish had to change it up for the 2020 season, joining the ACC Conference, as that was the only way they could secure an actual schedule.

While the Irish got out to a 10-0 start, they faltered down the stretch, losing in the ACC title game to Clemson, and then drawing the short straw as the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff. Playing against No. 1 Alabama, Notre Dame just did not have enough talent to keep up with the Crimson Tide and would go on to finish the season with a 10-2 record.

Still, playing football during a pandemic was an incredible task, and the fact that the team was able to string together their third straight ten-or-more win season was impressive. Heading into 2021, they are losing a ton of talent, including quarterback Ian Book, and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, so Brian Kelly will have to find a way to rebuild this roster in a hurry.

Sporting News ranks Notre Dame No. 6 overall

In their latest 2021 college football ranking, which is way too early, the Sporting News had Notre Dame as one of the top-10 teams in the country. In fact, the Irish nearly cracked the top five, as they finished out the rankings as the No. 6 team in the land, which is pretty impressive considering all the talent they are losing.

NCAA Council tables long-awaited legislation on NIL, transfer exemptions

The NCAA Division I Council voted Monday to delay enacting legislation on two major fronts: name, image and likeness rights and a one-time transfer exemption that would allow athletes to switch schools once without sitting out a year in residence... both pieces of legislation, which were once expected to be passed, would instead be delayed indefinitely... in light of a letter sent from the Justice Department to NCAA president Mark Emmert on Friday, and due to a high-profile NCAA case expected to be heard later this year by the Supreme Court, the council opted not to push forth the legislation for a vote later this week by the NCAA's Board of Directors.
No idea what was in that letter. Maybe "as long as Alabama and Ohio State continue to be in the playoffs virtually every year, no need to change anything?"

Three ACC alums elected to College Football Hall of Fame (augustafreepress.com)

The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced Monday the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class, which includes three representatives from ACC schools – Clemson running back/kick returner CJ Spiller, Miami linebacker Dan Morgan and North Carolina offensive tackle Harris Barton.

“The ACC congratulates Clemson’s C.J. Spiller, Miami’s Dan Morgan and North Carolina’s Harris Barton as part of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame class of 2021,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “All three individuals enjoyed outstanding careers and we look forward to celebrating their successes throughout this year.”

The 11 First-Team All-America players and two standout coaches in the 2021 Class were selected from the national ballot of 78 players and seven coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and the 99 players and 33 coaches from the divisional ranks.

Harris Barton

University of North Carolina
Offensive Tackle, 1983-86

An NFF National Scholar-Athlete in 1986, Barton matched his success in the classroom by becoming one of the most dominant offensive linemen in North Carolina history. The Atlanta native becomes the sixth Tar Heel to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

A First-Team All-American in 1986, Barton was named the ACC’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman after helping the Tar Heels finish sixth in the nation and first in the conference with 436 yards of total offense per game. The 1986 First-Team All-ACC selection was also part of an offensive unit that finished 10th in the nation with 252.5 rushing yards per game. A four-year starter, Barton began his career at center before being switched to tackle as a sophomore to take better advantage of his skills. After leading UNC to berths in the 1983 Peach Bowl and the 1986 Aloha Bowl, he concluded his stellar collegiate career in the Japan Bowl all-star game.

Some Upstate NY restaurants reopen, defying orange zone restrictions (PS; $; Herbert)

Some Upstate NY restaurants reopen, defying orange zone restrictions - syracuse.com
Some restaurants in Upstate New York have reopened for indoor dining, defying Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s “orange zone” restrictions.

WETM reports BC’s Texas Hots in Elmira and The Diner in Horseheads, both located in Chemung County, opened for indoor dining last week despite still being designated in an orange zone. Another four restaurants in the county — Lights Bakery, Turtle Leaf Cafe, Curly’s Chicken House and Anne’s Pancakes — said they’ll reopen for indoor dining this week.

“We’re drawing the line,” Turtle Leaf Cafe owner Adam Bunce told the Southern Tier TV station. “We were no longer going to be blamed responsible for the spread of COVID for the COVID numbers in this area.”

Cuomo introduced the zones in the fall as Covid-19 cases began surging again, with differing restrictions based on coronavirus infection rates. Eateries in yellow zones are still allowed to offer indoor dining, many of which are a short drive from orange zone businesses.
