Welcome to Opera Day!

While many of us would recognize an opera if we heard one, we may not be as familiar with the definitions and distinctions surrounding this complex musical genre. In short, an opera is a piece of performance art that combines music with text to create a dramatic enactment of a story, complete with acting, scenery, costumes and dance. The term opera is in fact the Italian for “work”, and the text is called the libretto, meaning “small book”. There are a whole range of types, from opera seria (noble and serious) and opera buffa (comedic) to operetta (light opera) and semi-opera (combining spoken dialogue with masque-like sections).

Generally speaking, operas consist of two kinds of music: recitatives and arias. Recitatives closely resemble speech and are there to help move the plot along, whereas arias are elaborate and often long songs for individual characters, allowing them to express their thoughts and emotions to the audience. This is one of opera’s defining characteristics compared with most musicals; whereas the more modern genre tends to intersperse its hits with spoken dialogue, operas are pretty much entirely sung, even if this means the recitative passages aren’t always especially tuneful!

Taking job at Syracuse University was life-saving decision for defensive coordinator (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

It was a decision that took Tony White into the deep hours of the night.

Then serving on an all-star coaching staff at Arizona State with former NFL Head Coaches like Herm Edwards and Marvin Lewis, White was offered a job by Dino Babers to serve as defensive coordinator at Syracuse.

It was a good problem to have and a tough choice to make.

"A decision had to be made," White said recently.

"I joke around with Dino all the time that I like to sit back and listen, then I like to formulate a good opinion on something I'm going to do now. I don't want to just jump into it. That night that Dino had made the offer to come to the 'Cuse, my family and I had decided, hey you know what after weighing the pros and cons and making all these lists and Venn Diagrams and such let's stay at Arizona State. And then when I got up that morning, there was just this sense that it was time. Neither choice was wrong, but it was just, where do I need to be?"

The answer was Syracuse.

White spent his early years in Queens on 165th Street very close to Jamaica High School. Prior to that his father was serving in Korea where he met Tony's mother and in time the couple settled in New York where Tony lived. Eventually, the couple separated and Tony's father moved to El Paso, Texas and his mother stayed in Queens.

Spring Football Position Preview: Quarterbacks (SI; Mc Allister)

Syracuse football has not announced the start of spring football yet, but it will be a critical time for the program. We begin our series looking at each position headed into the spring and what it could potentially mean for each player.

TOMMY DEVITO

Is there a player that this spring means more to than Tommy DeVito? For the first time since Eric Dungey departed the program, DeVito has legitimate competition for the starting job as the Orange brought in transfer Garrett Shrader and freshman Justin Lamson. DeVito has an advantage in terms of knowledge of the offense and familiarity with the program. He has already spent four seasons at Syracuse. DeVito needs to have a big spring and exit sitting atop the depth chart. If he does not, it is hard to imagine him regaining that during fall training camp.

JUSTIN LAMSON

The true freshman enrolled early and that will prove big for his development. An earlier start to learn the offense, become ingrained within the program and minimize the learning curve for a first year player. Lamson has a lot of ability. He is mobile, has a strong arm and is adept at making something out of nothing. He has a tremendously high ceiling. Where he is in year one remains to be seen, but this spring gives him an opportunity to establish himself. Can he, at a minimum, surpass Dillon Markiewicz and JaCobian Morgan? Could he possibly challenge Tommy DeVito and Garrett Shrader? Let him make mistakes during the spring so that he can spend the offseason correcting them and hit the ground running during fall camp.

DILLON MARKIEWICZ

Markiewicz saw minimal action last season and did not attempt a pass. This despite injuries to DeVito and Rex Culpepper. With a freshman entering the program in Lamson, a transfer with multiple years left in Shrader and DeVito still there, Markiewicz needs to make a move now if he is ever going to make a serious push for playing time. This is a critical spring for him. If he falls to fifth on the depth chart, it means the likelihood Markiewicz ever sees the field in meaningful action dwindles significantly.

JACOBIAN MORGAN

Morgan saw action in three games last season, completing over 63% of his passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He certainly showed flashes during that time, but also had his share of struggles. It was a difficult position for a true freshman to be in, but he handled it pretty well. This spring is a chance for him to establish himself. To take the next steps forward in his development. It is hard to envision him beating out DeVito and Shrader, but if he can hold off Lamson and earn the third spot on the depth chart, he could legitimately battle for the starting spot within a few years.

Two Former Syracuse Players Serving as In-Stadium Hosts for Super Bowl LV (SI; McAllister)

Two former Syracuse players will serve as in-stadium hosts for Super Bowl LV between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Former Orange linebacker Cameron Lynch and former walk-on longsnapper Scott Hanson will take those duties during the big game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay.

Their in-stadium analysis program will be called Super Bowl Insider, and provide statistics, records, season trends and behind the scenes moments from the season.

Lynch recorded 243 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries during his four years at Syracuse from 2011 to 2014. He spent four seasons in the NFL, including parts of three with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Hanson was a part of the Syracuse football program in the early 1990s. After his playing days concluded, Hanson went into sports media. He spent time in Michigan, Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania and Maryland at various outlets before joining the NFL Network in 2006. He is currently the host of NFL Red Zone, one of the most popular football related shows on any network. The NFL Red Zone bounces from game to game to show scoring plays, key moments and exciting finishes across the league.

In addition to hosting NFL Red Zone, Hanson also co-anchors NFL Total Access on the NFL Network.

Super Bowl LV features a matchup of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The two teams played during the regular season, with the Chiefs winning 27-24 on the Bucs home f

New Miami Hurricanes LB coach Travis Williams predicts All-ACC LB (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

New Miami Hurricanes linebackers coach Travis Williams stated on Wednesday during the National Signing Day press conference that there is an All-Conference LB on the roster. Miami had poor LB play in 2020 following the losses of four-year starters Shaq Quarterman and Michael Pinckney after the 2019 season.

The Miami Hurricanes fell from 17th against the run in 2019 to 76th in 2020. The Hurricanes allowed 114.62 rushing yards per game with Quarterman and Pinckney manning the middle of the defense in 2019. Without Quarterman and Pinkney in 2020, Miami allowed 176.45 rushing yards per game.

Three times in 2020, Miami allowed over 200 rushing yards. North Carolina ran for 554 yards and six touchdowns in the final regular-season game against the Miami Hurricanes. That was the most rushing yards allowed by Miami in program history. Miami will return all their LBs in 2021. Miami needs improvement at LB in 2021.

Brandon Jennings Jr. led Miami LBs with 39 tackles but was seventh overall and had 7.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Sam Brooks was slightly behind Jennings with 37 tackles. Zach McCloud returns for his fifth season with Miami after recording 27 tackles in 2020. Williams spoke about the history of LBs at Miami.

Take a look at this 16-team playoff bracket:

Do you think that's what college football needs? Before you answer, let's break down those match-ups (with actual playoff teams in bold) to see what we'd be getting...

1. Alabama vs. 16. BYU - mildly interesting; I can take it or leave it.
9. Georgia vs. 8. Cincinnati - we got this game anyway (Bulldogs won 24-21)
5. Texas AM vs. 12. Coastal Carolina - sure, I'm curious, but...
13. UNC vs. 4. Notre Dame - we got this game already (Irish won 31-17)
2. Clemson vs. 15. Iowa - not really interested
10. Iowa State vs. 7. Florida - good game nobody cares about
6. Oklahoma vs. 11. Indiana - bad game nobody cares about
14. Northwestern vs. 3. Ohio State - we got this already (Buckeyes won 22-10)
Now I'll be the first to tell you that the playoffs would be MUCH better with eight teams instead of four, but do we really need 16? I don't think so, for a couple of reasons: cost and quality.

Four teams requires two rounds, eight teams requires three rounds, and 16 teams requires four rounds. Did we really need to subject players to an extra week of wear and tear (not to mention submitting fans to an extra round of buying tickets, hotels, and possibly air fare) just to prove that Alabama was better than BYU or that Clemson was better than Iowa? Didn't we already prove that Ohio State was better than Northwestern and Notre Dame was better than North Carolina?
