Welcome
to Carnival Day!

Today we celebrate carnivals, many of which are the traveling type, similar to nineteenth-century circuses; they may consist of amusement rides, food, games—both of chance and skill, thrill acts, and animal acts. These professional traveling carnivals take place at state and county fairs, or in smaller places like store parking lots. Some professional traveling carnivals are used by schools, churches, businesses, and other groups, but some of these groups may design less sophisticated carnivals on their own. For example, students at a school may organize and run a carnival at their school as a fundraiser, without the use of a professional carnival company. Carnivals are often held in the summer months, but there are winter carnivals as well.

The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition was an impetus for the start of traveling carnivals. It had the original Ferris wheel, and its Midway Plaisance had rides, games of chance, and sideshow entertainment including freak shows and burlesque. The name "midway" was adopted by county and state fairs as a name for the areas where sideshow entertainment took place. By 1902 there were 17 carnival companies; there were forty-six in 1905 and 300 in 1937.

Syracuse Offer 'Felt Like Offer Number One All Over Again' for 2022 Receiver (SI; McAllister)

Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic wide receiver Tommy Winton already holds double digit offers. They include Duke, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others. Syracuse threw their hat into the mix on Tuesday.

"I spoke with (wide receivers) coach Samuel about the program over the phone and the direct they were headed in with him being new on the staff," Winton said. "To conclude the call he just let me know how I'd fit in the offense and that I have an offer from Syracuse. The whole call lasted around 25-30 minutes."

Samuel was hired very recently to be the new receivers coach under head coach Dino Babers at Syracuse. Samuel has a reputation as a strong recruiter and has already made an impression on Winton.

"An honest man that knows and played the game himself," Winton said. "So he has his own perspective on the life of a student-athlete."

When coach Samuel let him know that he had an offer, it caused quite the reaction.

Top Five QB Draft Picks, 2011-2020 (RX; HM)

Top Five QB Draft Picks, 2011-2020

Do you need a top 5 draft pick to get a franchise quarterback in the NFL? You be the judge; here are the QBs drafted in the first round over the last 10 years broken into two groups: top five picks and outside the top five (nominally 6th through 32nd, barring any unusual circumstances).
Since 2011, these are the QBs who were selected top five in the NFL draft (* = 2020 starter):

  • Cam Newton*
  • Andrew Luck
  • Robert Griffin III
  • Blake Bortles
  • Jameis Winston
  • Marcus Mariota
  • Jared Goff
  • Carson Wentz
  • Mitchell Trubisky*
  • Baker Mayfield*
  • Sam Darnold*
  • Kyler Murray*
  • Joe Burrow
  • Tua Tagovailoa*
Not bad. Six starting QBs from a list of 14 top five draft picks. A couple of the guys who are no longer starting had their careers cut short by injury.
On the other hand, these QBs were selected in the first round, but not top five:

  • Jake Locker
  • Blaine Gabbert
  • Christian Ponder
  • Ryan Tannehill*
  • Brandon Weeden
  • E J Manuel
  • Johnny Manziel
  • Teddy Bridgewater*
  • Paxton Lynch
  • Patrick Mahomes
  • Deshaun Watson*
  • Josh Allen*
  • Josh Rosen
  • Lamar Jackson*
  • Daniel Jones*
  • Dwayne Haskins
  • Justin Herbert*
  • Jordan Love
Yes, some of those picks didn't work out very well, but there are also seven starters in those 18 first round picks, including a couple of real steals. Lamar Jackson was picked 32nd (in 2018) - the last pick in the first round. I'm thinking there are 31 NFL teams who wouldn't mind a do-over. For what it's worth, Teddy Bridgewater was also picked 32nd (in 2014). For that matter, so was Drew Brees (2001).

2021 Spring Games (so far) (RX; HM)

2021 Spring Games (so far)

This schedule refers to intra-squad Spring games for ACC teams. Some teams will hold Spring practice but will not stage a Spring game. That's true even in a "normal" year, but much more so during the on-going Coronavirus pandemic.

2021 Spring Football Game Schedule

Saturday, April 3, 2021 - Clemson Tigers
Saturday, April 10, 2021 - Florida State Seminoles
Saturday, April 24, 2021 - North Carolina Tar Heels
No spring game in 2021: Louisville Cardinals
Everyone else is apparently still undecided. I'll update this post as I get information about other teams.

ACC Football: 10 Most Intriguing Non-Conference Games of 2021 (athlonsports.com; Kinne)

The season kicks off with a trio of ACC vs. SEC games

The ACC was one of two Power 5 conferences — along with the Big 12 — that played non-conference games in 2020. But with the exception of the games against upstart Liberty played by Syracuse, Virginia Tech, and NC State, the matchups were not that appealing.

While no one knows exactly how normal the fall of 2021 will be, the upcoming ACC non-conference slate, as currently constructed, is pretty exciting with traditional battles supplemented by a few new, high-quality contests. Here's a look at the 10 most interesting out-of-league games for the coming season.

10. Wake Forest at North Carolina, Nov. 6

Yes, both Wake Forest and North Carolina are ACC teams. No, this is not a conference game. In fact, this season marks the second time in three years that the two conference rivals meet up in an official non-conference contest. The Demon Deacons and the Tar Heels played an exciting game this past season, with Carolina rallying from a 21-point third-quarter deficit to win. Mack Brown's Tar Heels will be one of the ACC's top teams in 2021, but don't forget about Wake Forest, who returns one of the nation's most experienced rosters.

9. Missouri at Boston College, Sept. 25

Both Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz and Boston College's Jeff Hafley had nice first seasons on the job. They will look to build on that success in year two behind their quarterbacks — Connor Bazelak for the Tigers and Phil Jurkovec for the Eagles. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

8. Virginia at BYU, Oct. 30

Bronco Mendenhall returns to Provo, a place he spent 11 years as head coach. During his time leading BYU, he often matched wits with current Cougars head coach Kalani Sitake, who despite being an alumnus was the Utah defensive coordinator for six years. BYU is coming off of an 11-1 season but will have to replace star quarterback Zach Wilson.

Bourke-White photos, Dick Clark tapes, other materials, decaying at Syracuse University, faculty say (PS; $; Breidenbach)

A valuable collection of Margaret Bourke-White photographs, Dick Clark tapes, rare sports footage and other historic materials are degrading because of inadequate storage conditions at Syracuse University, a faculty Senate committee said Wednesday in a report.

The materials include “many tens of thousands” of films, photographs, negatives, recorded sound formats, tape-based media, books and manuscripts held by the Special Collections Research Center, the report said.

“If SU cannot properly care for treasures to which it has been entrusted, we need to surrender them, with donor approval, to institutions that can,” the report said.

Bourke-White, a photojournalist who died in 1971, was America’s first female war correspondent and the first female photographer for Life Magazine.

Her famous images in the collection show the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp and her portraits of Sergei Eisenstein and Joseph Stalin. They are showing signs of silver mirroring, damage caused by improper storage and humidity, the report said.
