Welcome to Gryffindor Pride Day!

Gryffindor is one of the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter novels and films. Celebrated by fans of Harry Potter, Gryffindor Pride Day is part of Hogwarts House Pride Week. In the series, students are "Sorted" into one of the houses when they start their first year at the school. The Gryffindor house founder, Godric Gryffindor, instructed the Sorting Hat to choose house members based on certain traits and characteristics that he places a high value on, including bravery, nerve, courage, determination, and chivalry. Some prominent Gryffindors are Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, as well as Molly Weasley and Remus Lupin.

Gryffindor house corresponds with the element of fire. This being the case, the colors of scarlet and gold represent the house. The house's symbol or mascot is the lion, which the colors of fire are also associated with: gold represents the coat, while scarlet represents the mane and tail. Together, the visual representation of the house is similar

to the historical English coat of arms.

Syracuse DBs Have Strong Pro Day Performances (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse held its Pro Day on Friday to showcase its former players who have NFL dreams. Among them are three defensive backs who are expected to be selected in the 2021 NFL Draft. Here is how each performed.

ANDRE CISCO

Performance: 17 bench press reps at 225-pounds (did not run).

Quote: "Today I only participated in the bench press. That's mainly because I'm only six months out of surgery. Not that I can't do anything, but it wouldn't have been smart to take that risk for today. We sat this one out for the most part. Got 17 reps on bench. Pretty solid with that for the most part. For the draft, I've been training in California, had surgery out there and I've been out there since just training, rehabbing."

IFEATU MELIFONWU

Performance: 4.48 40 time, 41.5" vertical jump, 11'2" broad jump, 4.34 shuttle, 7.01 3-cone, 16 bench press reps.

Quote: "I've been preparing in Tampa, Florida with Yo Murphy at Yo Murphy Performance. I've been there since January 2nd. Obviously I had the Senior Bowl then went straight back there training for this day."

SU had 3 NFL draft picks in the secondary. Pro Day reminds us what we missed (PS; $; Mink)

There hasn’t been a year Syracuse produced this many surefire NFL draft picks in nearly a decade.

So when Friday rolled around marking the school’s Pro Day, an event for prospects to run, lift and leap their way up the ranks of NFL team needs, a football program starving for attention at the height of basketball season got to trot out its three top prospects for next month’s draft.

Andre Cisco, Ifeatu Melfonwu and Trill Williams are going to make a lot of money very soon. All three defensive backs are projected to be drafted, possibly by the end of the third round, putting Syracuse in the company of an Ohio State or Alabama, places that often have multiple future pros at a position any given season.

It’s as good a day for Syracuse football as any since hoisting a bowl trophy 27 months ago, yet it passed with a hint of sadness of what we missed out on.

Cisco, five months since undergoing surgery on his knee, only participated in the bench press as he continues rehabbing a season-ending injury suffered before the third game of last season. He said he expects to be ready for the start of training camp in the summer.

Penn State target, Shippensburg DL Anthony Smith adds offer from Michigan (pennlive.com; Linder)

Anthony Smith is one of the biggest, baddest football prospects in Pennsylvania’s Class of 2022 and he’s a Penn State target.

But Sunday he said another Big 10 team — Michigan — entered the mix for the 6-foot-7, 250-pound defensive lineman.

I am very blessed to receive an offer from @CoachRyanOsborn @UMichFootball . Thank you to the coaching staff at Michigan for the opportunity and thank you to everyone that believes in me. pic.twitter.com/WxVIISlti1
— Anthony Smith (@Anthony_Smi) March 21, 2021

The Wolverines’ offer comes just less than a month after Smith added his first SEC offer from Ole Miss.

He also claims offers from North Carolina, Minnesota, Maryland, North Carolina State, Akron, Bowling Green, Pitt, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Buffalo, Syracuse, West Virginia, UConn, Iowa State and Nebraska.

Smith was a PennLive first-team central Pa. All-Star and an All-PA pick after recording 43 tackles, 14 for loss, with nine sacks in six games last season. He also scored 10 touchdowns.

NC State: CFB's Most-Improved 2020 Team

Nobody had a bigger turnaround in 2020 than @PackFootball and @NUFBFamily

Can these teams keep it going into next season? pic.twitter.com/hsJbFXFW9N

NC State: CFB's Most-Improved 2020 Team (RX; HM)

No team had a greater increase in the wins column in 2020 than NC State. Let that sink in just a bit. Miami was also among the most-improved, but only half as much as the Wolfpack. What was behind the big improvement in Raleigh, and is it sustainable?

How were the Wolfpack able to win four more games in 2020 than they did in 2019? Was it all, as some have suggested, just due to an easier schedule? To find out, let's do a side-by-side comparison (common opponents in bold):

Podcast: Breaking down FSU scrimmage, hoops postseason, baseball dominance (tomahawknation.com; podcast; Staff)

It’s been quite the last week for Florida State Seminoles athletics.

From a baseball winning streak that saw FSU beat UF and Miami 44-4 over four games to a Seminoles hoops team that has both shown flashes of brilliance and torment prepping for a deep run in a whacky NCAA Tournament and football taking Bobby Bowden Field for its first scrimmage of the fall.

To help break down all the hoopla (and baseballa), we welcome Tomahawk Nation contributors Kevin Little (XsandNoles) and Brett Nevitt (Sunday Golds) to give us some insider breakdown of the last week of action, with Brett reporting live from Indianapolis as he covers FSU’s run.

You can find it on Apple Podcasts here, all other currently available platforms here (including Google Podcasts and Stitcher) or embedded below. As always, please, if you haven’t yet, hit subscribe and rate us five-stars to help out on visibility — plus, if you subscribe, you’ll get the podcast instantly when it’s uploaded frantically at 1:32 in the morning.

VIDEOS: Crowd of Syracuse University students celebrate SU basketball win, defying Covid rules (PS; $; Herbert)

Large groups of Syracuse University students gathered on Sunday night to celebrate Syracuse basketball’s win in the NCAA Tournament, defying the school’s Covid-19 rules.

Videos shared on social media show a crowd of SU students outside the Castle apartments on South Campus, also known as Castle Court. They jumped, danced and cheered while wearing Orange gear after the SU men’s team defeated West Virginia to advance to the Sweet 16 and the SU women’s team defeated South Dakota State in the women’s tourney.

Few wore masks, despite concerns about coronavirus outbreaks from parties multiple times over the past six months.

Three big parties associated with Syracuse University’s Greek fraternities and sororities were traced as the source of at least 20 positive Covid-19 cases last month. SU Athletics Director John Wildhack was especially upset when Syracuse student-athletes hosted an off-campus party attended by more than 50 people not wearing face masks.

“This behavior is unacceptable,” Wildhack said in an email sent to athletes, parents and coaches. “Gatherings like these have proven to be a source of Covid-19 super-spreader events.”
