Welcome to Near Miss Day!

Near Miss Day commemorates the time when the 4581 Asclepius asteroid had a close call with hitting earth, passing by about 425,000 miles away. This may seem like a long distance, but in space distance, it is very close and missed striking the earth by about six hours. It was closest to earth between March 22 and 23, 1989, but was not discovered until March 31, by astronomers Henry E. Holt and Norman G. Thomas at the Palomar Observatory in California.

The asteroid, named after the Greek god of medicine, is about 300 meters wide and would have released energy comparable to a 600 megaton bomb—larger than any nuclear bomb ever created—if it would have hit earth. It would have left a crater many miles in diameter, and would have been capable of wiping out a large city. The probability that asteroids and meteorites will hit earth is measured by the Torino Scale and the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale. Similar near misses happen every couple years.

Pro Day Watch: FSU, Syracuse, more (bigbluereview.com; Magill)

In the wake of the cancellation of the NFL Scouting Combine, the focus has turned to college “pro days” for scouting for the 2021 NFL Draft. Here is a breakdown of some of the biggest prospects Pro Days from over the weekend.

Florida State

Tallahassee was the site of Monday’s most notable pro day, and the Seminoles have three major players to be on the look out for.

First up is senior defensive tackle Marvin Wilson. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 310 pounds, Wilson is an intimidating interior pass rusher and has been one of the best in the ACC when healthy. In the first nine games of 2019, he put an elite 44 tackles (8.5 for loss), 5 sacks, 4 passes defended with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery prior to a hand injury that sidelined him. He garnered first round projections in 2020 but chose to return for his senior season. However, a leg injury prompted Wilson to opt out of the remainder of the year. Now considered a Day 2 player with tremendous upside but risk of injuries, Wilson could be a potential steal for a team should he stay healthy.

NFL fans will of course recognize Asante Samuel Jr., the son of former Patriots, Eagles and Falcons corner Asante Samuel. An All-ACC First Teamer last season with 31 tackles (one for a loss), three interceptions, six pass breakups, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, Samuel Jr. is making a name for himself ahead of the draft. While his 5-foot-10, 184 pound frame is on the slightly smaller end, Samuel plays above his size with his tenacity and tackling ability while demonstrating impressive athleticism and man coverage technique. He has room to grow in zone, but he could be a starter on Day 1.

Duke Football Spring Showcase will be broadcast on ACC Network this weekend (247sports.com; Rowe)

Duke fans will get a chance to see their Blue Devils' football team in action this Saturday, when the team's annual Spring Showcase will be broadcast on the ACC Network.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, Duke will not allow spectators or media into the Spring Showcase, extending a policy that was in place during the fall and winters seasons. Events played on Duke's campus will include only essential game management personnel and broadcast media.

Fans are encouraged to follow Duke's social accounts to still join in on the fun of Duke's annual event. Prizes will be given away leading up to and during the Showcase as well.

David Cutcliffe enters his 14th year at the helm of the Blue Devil program. The Blue Devils return 81 lettermen to its 2021 roster, including wide receiver Jake Bobo, running back Mataeo Durant, cornerback Leonard Johnson and center Jack Wohlabaugh.

OT: Most-Hated States

In college football we talk about rivalries all the time, but they aren't limited to sports. States can have rivalries, too. According to one obscure poll I found posted on the internet, here's a list of the states that members of ACC states hate the most...

Kathy Hochul’s political roots in Syracuse: protests, Ernie Davis and a fight over the dome (PS; $; Weaver)

When Carrier Corporation and Syracuse University struck a deal four decades ago to put the air conditioner maker’s name on the school’s new sports stadium, some college students had other ideas.

They wanted to name the football stadium after Ernie Davis, SU’s star halfback and the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.

One of the leaders of the movement was Kathy Courtney, a student government vice president who, in her time at Syracuse, had already fought for and won lower prices at the campus bookstore and changes to students’ meal plans.

But by spring of 1979, the $2.75 million deal was sealed. The soft-top stadium would be the Carrier Dome.

Carrier “rightfully bought the name,” Kathy Courtney – now Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul – told the Daily Orange student newspaper that February.

Yet she and others didn’t give up. Larry Beer, a friend and fellow student government representative, remembers the day when Hochul and another student leader went to Carrier’s corporate office in what are now the Equitable Towers in downtown Syracuse.
