Welcome to Army Day!

Army Day honors those in the United States Army. It was created as a nationwide observance to draw attention to national defense, to acquaint the public with the Army's activities, and to highlight the need for military preparedness. Defense Test Day was held in 1924 and 1925. Congress did away with it and the Military Order of the World War under the direction of Colonel Thatcher Luquer established Army Day, which was first held on May 1, 1928. That date was chosen to try to overshadow the celebration of International Workers' Day by Communists. But, the following year it began being celebrated on April 6, on the anniversary of the United States' entry into World War I. On April 4, 1936, Franklin Roosevelt issued a proclamation for the day saying it should be acknowledged by Congress and be observed nationwide on April 6. Accordingly, Congress passed Resolution 5-75 on March 1, 1937, officially establishing Army Day. The day was last observed nationally on April 6, 1949. It was then replaced by Armed Forces Day. That new holiday did away with officially celebrating days dedicated to the Army, Navy, and Air Force, although Army Day continued to be observed unofficially.

The Army is the land warfare branch of the Armed Forces. It is the oldest branch, and one of seven uniformed services. Along with the Navy and Air Force, it is part of the Department of Defense. The Army is rooted in the Continental Army, which was formed in June 1775 to fight the Revolutionary War. Following the war, the United States Army was created in June 1784. It is the largest military branch: as of 2017 over one million members made up the combined forces of the Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve.

Class of 2022 Opa Locka (Fla.) Monsignor Pace linebacker Mekhi Mason released his top seven on Monday, and Syracuse made the cut. The other six schools on Mason's list were Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

"I love everything at Syracuse," Mason said about the Orange's inclusion on his list. "From the school to the coaching staff."

Mason is visiting Syracuse this week, arriving on Thursday April 8th and visiting the school on the 9th and 10th. The visit will be a self-guided tour as face to face contact with the coaching staff is currently prohibited by the NCAA due to the ongoing pandemic. The fact that Mason and his family are coming up on their own volition and staying multiple days shows that the interest in Syracuse is very real.

"Just to get a feel for the school," Mason said of what he's looking for on the visit.

Recovered from injuries, Georgia Southern football's Justin Ellis feels like he's just in time (savannahnow.com; Dominitz)

As physically challenging as football is as a sport, the mental aspect also has brought out Justin Ellis’ toughness.

For every two steps forward in his career, it seems the Georgia Southern redshirt senior defensive end had taken one step back.

“This is always what I wanted to do,” Ellis, 21, said after an Eagles practice last week. “You’ve got to see it through. That’s how I’ve always looked at it. … I’ll put my faith in God, and whatever happens, happens.”

He recovered from a broken leg as a high school junior to record 19 sacks his senior season and lead Roswell to a state championship game appearance.

Ellis thought he had missed his chance to play in a Power Five conference and was considering Group of Five programs when Syracuse of the ACC offered him a scholarship after National Signing Day.

But his time in Syracuse was brief and unhappy — he points to his position coach’s style of coaching — so he came home after his freshman year to the Peach State. He found a much better fit at Georgia Southern, one of those Group of Five programs that recruited him at Roswell. He liked playing for defensive line coach Victor Cabral, whom he knew through summer camps. Ellis sat out the 2018 season as a transfer.

Former Del Valle football coach Charles Burton, son Caleb Burton to join Lake Travis (stateman.com; Jones)

Del Valle's former coach also has a Syracuse connection...

Former Del Valle head coach Charles Burton will join the football staff at Lake Travis, along with son, five-star receiver Caleb Burton, according to sources.

The hire won’t be official until approved by the Lake Travis school district later this month, and Burton won't begin work at Lake Travis until next school year.

Both Burtons will strengthen a Lake Travis program that has won six state championships, which most recently includes the 2016 Class 6A Division I title. Charles Burton, the longest-tenured head football coach in Del Valle High School history, resigned from that position in March after eight seasons at the school. He compiled a 29-51 record with one playoff appearance during his time at Del Valle, including a 3-6 mark last season. That winning percentage compares favorably for a program that has a winning rate of 32.6% since beginning football in 1956.

Burton, a Houston-area native who played linebacker at Syracuse and in NFL Europe in the 2000s, has an extensive coaching background, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Notre Dame, USF set dates to complete three-game football series (ndinsider.com; James)

When South Florida was added to Notre Dame’s 2020 football schedule, the Bulls made sure it wasn’t just a one-off game.

USF announced in August that the two schools would also meet twice more with each team receiving a home game. On Monday, both schools announced those two dates. USF will host Notre Dame in Tampa, Fla., on Sept. 15, 2029, and the Irish will play hosts on Sept. 13, 2031.

As the COVID-19 pandemic started to drastically shift college football schedules last year, Notre Dame agreed to temporarily join the ACC in football for the 2020 season to secure an 11-game schedule. Part of the agreement dictated that the Irish were allowed to play one non-conference game as long as it was played in Indiana.

ACC Football: Which Team is the Favorite to Win the Coastal Division for 2020? (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

The ACC Coastal is one of college football’s toughest and most unpredictable divisions on a yearly basis. With Virginia winning the 2019 division title, all seven teams have made an appearance in the conference championship game over the last seven years. The 2020 race is shaping up to be unpredictable once again. The Cavaliers must replace star quarterback Bryce Perkins but return one of the ACC’s top defenses. North Carolina and Virginia Tech are on the rise, and the arrival of a handful of transfers, including quarterback D’Eriq King, should help Miami improve in coach Manny Diaz’s second year. Pitt is also a contender behind a strong defense and senior quarterback Kenny Pickett.

I think five teams – Miami, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia and Pitt – have a realistic shot at the Coastal Division title in 2020. After all, this is a division that just produced seven different champions in seven years. The final order of finish is likely to be very tight, with teams locked at 6-2/5-3 at the top. For now, I’d give a slight edge to the Tar Heels over the Hokies. Coach Mack Brown’s squad was a much-improved team behind quarterback Sam Howell and a dynamic offense and all of the team’s six losses came by seven points or less. Howell should be even better as a sophomore and returns one of the ACC’s top supporting casts. North Carolina’s defense took a step forward under coordinator Jay Bateman last year, and while some new faces must emerge up front, the linebacker and defensive back units should be strong. Additionally, the Tar Heels host Virginia Tech on Oct. 10 in a crucial matchup that could decide the winner of the Coastal.

GUEST ARTICLE: What if the ACC Splits? (RX; Nobody)

GUEST ARTICLE: What if the ACC Splits?

Today we are privileged to have a guest article from Lee Nobody.
GUEST ARTICLE - "Plausible Expansion Scenario: The ACC Splits" by Lee Nobody

Here's the Scenario:

The contract negotiation for the TV rights of the mid 2020 come and go with the SEC, B1G, Big 12 and Pac 12 securing greater revenue for all member university. The ACC, locked into a deal until the 2030s, sees institutions bicker over the lack of investment in football programs and effort being put forward to compete at the highest level.
The ACC is divided between two wings, the “football first wing” of Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Miami, Louisville, and the “basketball first wing” of North Carolina schools, Virginia, Syracuse, Boston College and Pitt. The “football first wing” motivated in part by the desire to be competitive in with their in-state SEC rivalries come to conclusion that their fates are better tied together as a group than with the “basketball first wing”.
Believing the media rights of “football first wing” will yield a better per school revenue payout than the ACC, a more amicable divorce is arranged than the Big East AAC Split. The ACC branding and conference infrastructure will stay with the [basketball-first teams], while the Orange Bowl Tie in, and Conference Championship game contracts will leave with the “football first wing”. The “football first wing” will then take on a new conference name and branding - for discussion purposes, titled the “Metro Conference”
The Metro Conference would likely invite WVU and Cincinnati to bring the Conference to 8 teams. Both will accept as the new conference would be appealing to fanbases, and potentially upgrade revenue.

The Result:

ACC: UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, Syracuse, Pitt, Boston College, Virginia
Metro: Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Miami, WVU, Cincinnati
The Metro might even bring a new player to the media rights negotiation in the form of Atlanta Based Turner Broadcasting/Warner Media. The Metro Conference would play a 7 game round-robin season which would be supplemented with the now SEC-Metro rivalry games. Commonwealth Cup (VT vs UVA) would join this group of rivalry games protected by state governments. The Metro Conference would also require an additional out-of-conference game against a team in the current P5 in addition to in-state rivalry games. Miami, WVU and Cincinnati would likely play 2 at-large P5 teams as they lack established recurring P5 rivalries. These games could be filled with regional games such as Clemson–UGA or Auburn–Georgia Tech. Both conferences will continue to compete in football at the FBS level, however the Metro will be considered on par with the Big 12, while the ACC is considered on par with today’s AAC. New Bowls would form or switch alignments in the transition.
Notre Dame would likely end its agreements with the ACC to join the Big East in all non-football sports, or reduce the number of games in played the against the ACC to retain Notre Dame’s Basketball team.

I disagree with a few of the projected winners (e.g. I think Clemson beats Georgia), but I'm mainly here to compare P5 conferences.
#Appearances in Top 20
SEC10
ACC8
B1G7
Pac5
XII5
G53
IND2
The ACC has the second most appearances on this top 20 games list, thus maintaining the "anyone, anywhere, anytime" attitude of ACC football. (Although it would be better if conference teams could win a few more of these marquee games!)
__________
Most (six) of those are ACC-vs-SEC games:

  • Alabama vs. Miami
  • Boston College vs. Missouri
  • Georgia vs. Clemson
  • Florida vs. Florida State
  • Pitt vs. Tennessee
  • Louisville vs. Kentucky
The other two are
  • Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia

Ryan McMahon sends 1,500 Covid vaccine doses to SU. Next up, high schools (PS; $; Knauss)

Onondaga County will send 1,500 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to Syracuse University Wednesday, the start of an initiative to focus vaccinations on students as the minimum age of eligibility falls to 16 Tuesday.

The county also plans to start vaccinating high school students as soon as this week, County Executive Ryan McMahon said today.

County officials are working with SU and other local colleges to get students vaccinated, either on campus or at the county’s downtown vaccine site at the Oncenter. The county also is talking with local school districts about offering vaccines to high school students, McMahon said.

Students younger than 18 would require parental consent to get the shot, and they must get the Pfizer vaccine, which is the only one approved for that age group. The county is offering Pfizer vaccines Tuesday and Thursday this week at the Oncenter.
