Welcome to Save the Elephant Day!

Elephants are known as the most enormous land animal and a surprisingly gentle giant in the animal kingdom. Emotional, intelligent and beautiful in the wild, sadly elephant populations have been rapidly decreasing due to various threats, perhaps most significantly poaching.

Save The Elephant Day aims to change this alarming trend by educating people about elephants and the plights they face, encouraging everyone to do their bit and help save them from extinction.

'Sky's the limit' for Syracuse football recruit Syair Torrence, coach says - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse athletics may be in for a double-dose of Torrence.

In April, the basketball team landed a commitment from Symir Torrence after he had spent two seasons at Marquette. On Wednesday, The Juice Online was first to report Dino Babers and company offered a football scholarship to Syair Torrence, who is just a high school freshman at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, and the younger brother of Symir.

The offer was as an athlete, which means that Babers is evaluating Syair as both a wide receiver and defensive back.

I spoke with his CBA head football coach, Casey Brown, on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse podcast, presented by SNY.tv to find out more about Syair.

“Syair is a very humble young man,” Brown said. “He took (the Syracuse offer) in and enjoyed the moment, but knows he’s got a long road ahead of him.”

In particular, Brown praised Syair’s work ethic on the football field as well as in the classroom.

As a wide receiver, he’s meticulous in terms of being ready,” Brown said. “Without work in the classroom, he’s not going to be able to get on the field. So there’s a whole other factor where he’s making sure he’s a student at CBA making sure he gets the grades to be on the field.”

Eric Dungey Finds Opportunity in The Spring League (SI; McAllister)

Former Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey has landed on a roster for a professional football league. Dungey is on the Blues roster for The Spring League, AllSyracuse.com has confirmed.

What exactly is The Spring League? It describes itself as "the premier professional football development league operating in the U.S." The league has existed since 2017, contains eight teams and will play a total of 24 regular season games beginning in May. The games will be broadcast on Fox and FS1. Players in the league are provided with housing and meals, but do not receive additional compensation.

Johnny Manziel made headlines in 2018 while playing in The Spring League. You can read more about the league on the FAQ on their official website HERE.

Eric Dungey is Syracuse's all-time leader in career passing yards, second in completions and third in touchdown passes. He is one of the most productive quarterbacks in Orange history. Forced into action as a true freshman when veteran Terell Hunt got hurt, Dungey played with grit, toughness and determination.

Norfolk State will visit Wake Forest in first football game against an ACC team )pilotonline.com; Nimmo)

Norfolk State finally will return to the football field this fall with a rugged nonconference schedule featuring several firsts — including the Spartans’ first game against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.
Norfolk State will play Wake Forest on Sept. 11 before its home opener against Elizabeth City State on Sept. 18, the school announced Thursday. That game is one of just four home dates for NSU.

The Spartans open their season against Toledo on Sept. 4 in the Spartans’ first game since 2019.
Norfolk State’s fall season and makeup spring slate were canceled due to the pandemic.

The Spartans’ visit to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, follows by one week Wake Forest’s home game against Old Dominion.
The Demon Deacons finished 4-5 in 2020, losing to Wisconsin in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Wake Forest’s regular-season wins included victories over Virginia and Virginia Tech, and the Demon Deacons made their fifth consecutive bowl appearance.

A look inside the Better B.C. Burger from Mad Burger Co., Syracuse, N.Y. (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gma

Boo! Burgers and more from Mad Burger Co., Syracuse’s first ghost kitchen (Dining In Review) (PS; $; Paventi)

A table sits at the back of the room with brown shopping bags and signs for the major food delivery apps. This is the only indication you arrived at Mad Burger Co., the ghost kitchen on Tipperary Hill from the owners of The Brasserie Bar & Bistro in Camillus.

We took the long way home, hitting every red light along West Genesee Street to our Camillus home, simulating a delivery ride as best as we could. Delivery is how most customers receive their orders from the restaurant, though it now offers customers the ability to walk in and pickup their bags (Mad Burger Co. will launch its own ordering website and delivery team in the coming weeks.)

What we found upon returning home was further proof of our pandemic-takeout theory: burgers are tough for takeout. Pick the wrong container and they either overcook while standing and steaming, or go cold. Burgers continue to cook while standing, so pull them too early and the juice will render a soggy bun. Let them go to medium or medium-well and you’ll likely end up with a dry patty. It’s a tightrope walk for sure.

Mad Burger Co. makes a good burger. When we cracked the brown takeout boxes open, we found most of our burgers at medium well, though a few had lost signs of pink. The buns held up beautifully, absorbing some of the burgers’ juiciness without falling apart.

The Better B.C. Burger ($15) is the closest to a traditional burger you will find on the menu, with bacon and cheese (the B and C) starring. American cheese and deep fried cheddar cheese curds are stuffed in the burger with a thin layer of bacon jam on the buns. There was a sweetness in each bite from the jam, but the cheese dominated the flavors of the burger.
