In Italy in 1992, after being taken to an isolated road on her first driving lesson, an 18-year old girl was pulled from the car by her 45-year old driving instructor and raped. He was convicted but appealed saying that the sex was consensual. The rape conviction was overturned by the Italian Supreme Court and he was released. A statement from the court said that because the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her attacker remove them, which implied consent. This line of thinking would become known as the "jeans alibi."
The following day, the women of the Italian Parliament wore jeans in solidarity with the victim and gathered on the steps of the Supreme Court. News of the case and the response spread around the world. In support, members of the California Senate and Assembly gathered on the steps of the Sacramento Capitol. Patricia Giggans, the Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, thought that jeans should be worn in protest, not only to show that jeans cannot be used as an alibi but to protest all the myths of why women and girls are raped. So, she created Denim Day. The first event was held in April 1999 in Los Angeles.

Syracuse football playing with an edge during spring practice: '1-10 can't happen again' (247sports.com; Bailey)
Syracuse football broke a monthlong silence on Tuesday as players spoke to media for the first time since the end of the 2020 season. Perhaps most prominently, the session provided a glimpse at how the team responded from its second one-win campaign since 1948. Only head coach Dino Babers has spoken since the team opened spring practice in late March, holding a press conference after Day 1.
Now fourteen practices into the spring, players agreed that the unit was able to harness motivation from the down year and turn it into growth. Sixth-year defensive end Josh Black raved about the atmosphere surrounding the group.
"In all my time that I've been here, I think spring ball was the best spring ball we've ever had here as a team," Black said. "Just cohesively, from the physicality, from as soon as we got our two feet on the ground running the first day in just helmets, I just felt there was something different. There was a new form of energy. We just feel really hungry to get back on the field because we can't let what happened last year happen to us again. And I feel like we're feeding off of that for sure."

New Syracuse OL coach Mike Schmidt already making impression during spring ball: 'We trust him' (247sports.com; Bailey)
Syracuse football's offensive line woes were crystal clear heading into the offseason. Injuries and inadequate performance hamstrung Dino Babers' hurry-up offense each of the last two seasons.
Then the sixth-year head coach was left looking for a new offensive line coach after Mike Cavanaugh accepted a similar position at Arizona State. Mike Schmidt, a longtime assistant at San Diego State, where he worked alongside current Orange defensive coordinator Tony White, was selected to fill the void.
"It's good to see that group back up and it's good to see them working with Coach Schmidt," Babers said after Day 1 of spring practice on March 30. "It's going to be the key to our season, one of the keys to our season. There's no doubt about it."

Who Replaces the NFL Talent? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)
The NFL Draft is just days away! Syracuse hopes to add three more names to the list of former Orange playing on Sundays. The defensive back trio of Andre Cisco, Ifeatu Melifonwu, and Trill Williams await the phone call that turns their lifelong dreams into a reality. SU fans should be right there with them watching the draft over the weekend.
Let’s take a break from the mocks and the draft itself though and bring the focus back to the Hill. How does the SU defense replace the professional talent exiting the secondary? Well the Orange kind of already got an opportunity to attack that problem in 2020.
Rover
Andre Cisco only played in two contests last season against North Carolina and Pittsburgh (thanks Ed Hendrix). The New York native was injured in the pregame warmups before the Georgia Tech game. A knee injury sidelined the NCAA’s active leader with 13 interceptions and the Orange had to look elsewhere.
True freshman Rob Hanna was called upon to take the reins at the rover spot. He had about as good of a debut imaginable. The Miami, Florida native logged nine tackles, one for a loss, and hauled in an interception against the Yellowjackets. He followed that up two weeks later against Duke with another big game. Hanna posted a career-high 12 tackles and recovered a fumble against the Blue Devils.
At 6-foot even and 168 pounds last season, he may have been a year earlier in seeing the field significantly. However, the true frosh took the opportunity and ran with it. Hanna started the final nine games of the 2020 season and finished with 43 solo tackles, a pair of tackles for loss, one pick, and one fumble recovery.

Notre Dame Football: A Year in the ACC to Air May 3 Exclusively on ACC Network - ESPN Press Room U.S. (espnpressroom.com, Ufnowski)
Notre Dame football’s historic 2020 season will be chronicled with Notre Dame Football: A Year in the ACC, the story of the Fighting Irish’s unprecedented season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The one-hour documentary will air exclusively on ACC Network (ACCN), the 24/7 national platform dedicated to ACC sports, on Monday, May 3, at 8 p.m. ET.
For more than 130 years, Notre Dame football has operated as an independent. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the schedule uncertainties that ensued, the ACC presented an opportunity for the Fighting Irish to play a full 10-game conference schedule – with eligibility to compete in the ACC Football Championship Game for the 2020 season.
Notre Dame Football: A Year in the ACC will feature:
- Interviews with head coach Brian Kelly, quarterback Ian Book, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and many more;
- Defensive lineman and team captain Daelin Hayes’ impact as a team leader on and off the field
- Behind the scenes access surrounding the Fighting Irish’s regular-season game against Clemson
- An inside look at how the historic collaboration between the Notre Dame football program and the ACC became a reality in 2020.

ACC NFL Draft Preview (theacc.com)
The 2021 NFL Draft is Thursday-Saturday, April 29-May 1 in Cleveland, Ohio, and the ACC is poised to have one of its most successful showings. The first round is slated to begin Thursday at 8 p.m. with ESPN and NFL Network broadcasting the event. Rounds two and three will start Friday at 7 p.m. and rounds four through seven are Saturday, starting at noon.
Most NFL draft experts expect Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence to be the third ACC player to be selected No. 1 overall, joining Jameis Winston (2015, Florida State) and Mario Williams (2006, NC State). In addition to Lawrence, several other ACC players have made appearances in NFL Draft experts' mock drafts.
In CBSsports.com's latest three-round mock draft, 26 ACC players are expected to be selected in the early rounds, including seven first-rounders.
In Peter Schrager's NFL Mock Draft published April 20 on NFL.com, seven ACC players are predicted to be picked in the first round. Schrager has Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 to Jacksonville, Miami DE Jaelan Phillips at No. 14 to Minnesota, Virginia Tech OL Christian Darrisaw at No. 16 to Detroit, Clemson RB Travis Etienne at No. 19 to Washington, Virginia Tech DB Caleb Farley at No. 23 to the New York Jets, Miami DE Gregory Rousseau at No. 26 to Cleveland, and Florida State DB Asante Samuel Jr. at No. 30 to Buffalo. In addition, 2021 ACC Defensive Player of the Year Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah of Notre Dame is Schrager's No. 22 pick to Tennessee.

ACC head coach is copying Swinney (theclemsoninsider.com; Staff)
A few years back, Dabo Swinney and his wife, Kathleen, moved into their dream home that is less than a mile from Clemson’s campus. But there is another reason that makes it the perfect home for the Swinneys.
It is close enough to Clemson University where they can host recruits who come to Clemson’s campus on unofficial visits.
Swinney and Clemson have used this as a tactical advantage, especially when you consider how great of a recruiter the Tigers’ head coach is.
Now, according to 247Sports, North Carolina head coach Mack Brown has taken a page out of Swinney’s playbook. Brown and his wife, Sally, moved into a new home that is .98 miles from the UNC campus in Chapel Hill.
Like Swinney, Brown can now host recruits when they come to tour UNC unofficially.
NCAA rules say, “Off-campus contact between an institutional staff member and a prospective student-athlete (and those accompanying the prospective student-athlete) and off-campus contact between an enrolled student-athlete and a prospective student-athlete (and those accompanying the prospective student-athlete) may occur during an unofficial visit within one mile of campus boundaries.”

2021 NFL draft: Could Caleb Farley fall out of the first round? (gobblercontry.com; Manning)
Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley was considered a lock to be the first cornerback taken.
Throughout the draft process, scouts and teams were enamored with Farley’s rare combination of size and athleticism. In just two years of playing cornerback, Farley became an All-ACC performer.
Despite the lack of experience, there aren’t many cornerbacks who stand 6-feet-2 and ran the 40-yard dash in under 4.4 seconds.
Things were going smoothly for Farley until late March when he revealed he would miss Virginia Tech’s pro day. The reason Farley was missing pro day was to have a procedure on his back. It’s actually the second time Farley has undergone a back procedure in the last three years.
Recent mock drafts have Farley as either the third or fourth quarterback taken with Alabama’s Patrick Surtain going No. 10 overall to the Dallas Cowboys in several. In most mock drafts in February and March, it was Farley predicted to Dallas at No. 10.
Now, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, NFL teams are wary of Farley’s back injuries, and he could slip out of the first round.
Let’s hope these rumors aren’t true, and Farley still lands in the first round. I don’t see Farley slipping past Tennessee at No. 22 overall. The status of Virginia Tech CB Caleb Farley is one of the biggest question marks in the draft. At this point, landing in round 1 ist is very possible but not a guarantee. pic.twitter.com/7lFSQo2ZAE

Tennessee and West Virginia Will Kick Off 2028 College Football Season in Charlotte - West Virginia University Athletics (wvusports.com; Kay)
The Charlotte Sports Foundation (CSF) today announced that the University of Tennessee will play West Virginia University in the 2028 Duke's Mayo Classic in Charlotte. West Virginia will be designated the home team for the game at Bank of America Stadium. The game is set for Saturday, September 2, 2028. The kickoff time and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
This is the second regular season matchup in Charlotte between the Volunteers, from the Southeastern Conference, and the Mountaineers, from the Big 12 Conference. The two teams played at Bank of America Stadium on September 1, 2018 in front of 66,793 fans (WVU won 40-14). It was the first and only time the two schools have faced off on the gridiron.
"We are very excited to announce that Tennessee and West Virginia will be returning to Charlotte to kick off the 2028 college football season," said Danny Morrison, Executive Director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. "In 2018, Charlotte hosted the first ever meeting between the two schools in football. The atmosphere surrounding the game was tremendous, with very active, supportive fan bases. We are proud to bring this marquee matchup back to the Queen City and look forward to hosting the Volunteer and Mountaineer teams and fans again in Charlotte."
"This should be a fun showcase game for our program in a city and venue our fans enjoy visiting," Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White said. "Opening our season against a quality opponent like West Virginia will serve as a valuable experience for our team prior to SEC play.

1981: Syracuse fans debate pro wrestling’s legitimacy after Andre the Giant pins Sgt. Slaughter (PS; $; Croyle)
Professional wrestling made its triumphant return to the Onondaga County War Memorial on April 14, 1981 after an 18-month absence.
The sold-out crowd of 6,334 for the World Wrestling Federation show that night was the largest ever for a wrestling show at the arena up to that time and officials from the promotion said that they had turn away more than 2,000 people at the gates who wanted to get in.
The local response was so good that the WWF hoped to return as soon as possible, maybe just a few weeks later in June at the brand-new Carrier Dome.
“It’s amazing,” said Howard Finkel ring announcer and public relations official from the WWF said after the show. “There obviously was a hunger by the fans of Syracuse for professional wrestling.”
His assessment was supported by the thousands who cheered and booed their favorite heroes and villains during the seven-bout card.
Famous names like Pat Patterson, Killer Khan, the Moondogs, women’s champion The Fabulous Moolah, and Rick Martel performed that night. The main event was a clash between heavyweights Andre the Giant and Sgt. Slaughter.
(Of course, “The Giant” won, easily lifting Slaughter over his head before slamming him to the mat, then jumping down on his opponent’s chest “with a resounding thud.”)
Children, mostly boys, waited for wrestlers to exit their dressing rooms when the matches were concluded.
“I love the action,” said one 14-year-old boy.
