elcome to Cellophane Tape Day!

In the early 1920s, Richard Gurley Drew worked at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, now known as 3M, which at the time made sandpaper. Drew delivered sandpaper samples to auto body shops and saw the frustration that car painters had when painting two-tone color cars. Surgical adhesive tape, library pastes, and homemade glues were used to hold newspapers on cars when painting, and as the papers were removed, sticking residues often remained, that ripped off some of the paint when they were peeled off.

In 1929, Drew came up with the idea of using DuPont's recently invented cellophane to make tape. Cellophane was moisture proof and was used to wrap baked goods and grocery items. He wanted to invent a tape made of cellophane that would seal cellophane packaging while blending in, so as to not be seen. The machinery that had been used for applying adhesive to masking tape didn't work with the cellophane tape, and the glue that was used in masking tape didn't look good on the transparent tape. New machines were made, and a new, clear adhesive made of oil, rubber, and resins helped create a successful clear cellophane tape. It was originally given the name Scotch Cellulose Tape and later became Scotch Transparent Tape. It was revealed and began being marketed on January 31, 1930, and its patent was published on May 27 of the same year. This is why Cellophane Tape Day is celebrated today.

How Important is Garrett Williams to SU’s Defensive Backfield? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

Syracuse football has a lot of work to do ahead of next fall. Last season’s 1-10 mark still shouldn’t sit right with anyone, but there are caveats to what was a brutal year. It’s probably hard to find a team that was more stricken by injuries and COVID opt-outs than Syracuse, and the youth the team displayed was a big positive.

For example, Sean Tucker’s emergence from unknown backup to probable starter at running back was a great development, and JaCobian Morgan showed some flashes at quarterback to supply some much-needed depth at that position. On the defensive side of the ball, one name sticks out among the rest: cornerback Garrett Williams.

How important is Williams to this season and SU’s secondary?

In a word, very. Williams’ freshman 2020 season was dynamite any way you slice it. The North Carolinian led SU in solo tackles with 54, picked off two passes, led the ACC in passes defended with 12, and played at a high enough level to earn an All-ACC Honorable Mention. Heck, his first career interception was a pick-six against Clemson and the NFL’s 2021 number-one overall pick Trevor Lawrence.

Williams’ role in the secondary now transitions from an exciting newcomer to more of a leading role, despite his youth. Last year’s DB trio of Andre Cisco, Ifeatu Melifonwu, and Trill Williams have all moved on to the NFL. At corner, Williams is the only predictable starter. Freshman Chase Atkinson and highly-touted four-star recruit Duce Chestnut (class of ‘25) are in the mix at corner as well, but they’ve played a combined 0 career games. At safety, it’s more of the same with redshirt freshmen Aman Greenwood (started the last seven games of 2020) and Adrian Cole (five games played in 2020).

DraftKings sets Syracuse football win total at 3 (PS; $; Mink)

A popular online has set the win total for Syracuse football at three ahead of the 2021 season.

DraftKings issued win totals for nearly all FBS schools on Wednesday, setting the Orange’s win tally at one of the lowest among the five major conferences.

BetOnline and SportsBetting.ag also set the win total at three on Wednesday.

It’s a reflection of last year’s 1-10 season, recent history, lower-rated recruiting classes and an uninspiring outlook that this year’s team will fare much better. Of the four other Power Five schools with win totals set at three or fewer wins (Illinois, Vanderbilt, Arizona and Kansas), all four have first-year head coaches.

Syracuse And Its Rich MMA History - The Juice Online (the juiuce; Robinson)

Football, basketball, and lacrosse are probably the three sports that spring to mind when someone asks you about Syracuse and its sporting prowess. But what about Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)? Syracuse has a rich history when it comes to professional MMA fighting, despite MMA being illegal in New York until 2016.

The New York state assembly ended the ban on professional MMA fights in March 2016. They voted 113-25 in favor of allowing professional MMA bouts to take place in the state, the 50th US state to do so. Only 76 votes were needed to pass the law, showing how in favor of MMA New York was.

There were some talented MMA fighters in Syracuse, or with ties to Syracuse, even before the sport became legal in New York. While most of these athletes no longer feature in the latest UFC betting sites odds, some of them put Syracuse on the MMA map.

Mark Kerr: the First True MMA Pro With Syracuse Connections

Mark Kerr is a long-retired MMA professional who hails from Toledo, Ohio, but attended Syracuse University. Kerr was the Division 1 wrestling champion at 190 pounds in 1992, and a fighting career beckoned.

Known as “The Smashing Machine,” Kerr won his first 12 professional fights, including four in the UFC. He also fought in the Pride Fighting Championships, but his promising career took a turn for the worse. Kerr only won four of his next 14 fights before retiring in 2009 after a string of five consecutive defeats.

HBO made a documentary about Kerr, which dealt with his life and career, including his addiction to opiate painkillers later in life.

Mike Mucitelli Grew Up in Syracuse

Mike Mucitelli is another Syracuse fighter who managed to turn professional. Born in Rochester, New York, but raised in Syracuse, Mucitelli excelled in football, basketball, and baseball during high school, but his passion was fighting.

Big XII 2021 payouts down - why? (RX; HM)

Big XII 2021 payouts down - why?

Here are some observations we can make based on the AP article "Big 12 Revenue Lower Again In Pandemic At $34.5M Per School":

Each school will get about $34.5 million for the 2020-21 fiscal year, down from $37.7 million [for] 2019-2020 [which, in turn, was] about $1.1 million lower than the previous year.

After years of steady - sometimes spectacular - growth, Big XII revenue has been falling in recent years. This year, which includes the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Big XII revenue is down about $3.2 million per school. This, in turn, is due to a conference revenue shortfall of about $50 million which was reportedly caused by a number of factors:

  • reduced money from TV contracts (due to having fewer games to televise)
  • lower ticket sales (in part due to restrictions on the number of the fans)
  • not having a team in the College Football Playoff.
We already knew about those last two, but that first factor is particularly interesting because no P5 conference played as many games as the ACC. In fact, we already ran the numbers for the ACC, Big Ten and SEC back on 2/18/21 (see "2020 Lost FB TV games, revenue"). Now, it looks like the Big XII commissioner is confirming that my analysis is correct, and the other power conferences will each take a huge hit next year.

Every year you can count on preseason college football Top 25 lists not showing much love for the ACC. The latest from Sporting News is no exception. Bill Bender took a look at the landscape and after making some adjustments to their January edition following the NFL Draft has something ‘slightly different’ to offer readers. The top 6 teams are the same however one conference team drops one spot in this iteration. One other noteworthy difference is the ‘just missed’ portion of the January Top 25 where NC State gets a mention. That portion of the list was not included in this go round.

College football fans will feel as if the top 5 is a broken record, a skipping CD, a glitchy digital playback if you will. The dominance of essentially the same teams and/or conferences is still in play and likely will be for years to come. Are there teams out there that can break through and shatter the glass ceiling of college football? From my perspective, no. There are programs on the rise, however. It’s not so much can you beat the monsters we’ve all created it’s more about doing it year after year. There’s still not enough consistency among programs such as Oklahoma, Georgia, Notre Dame or any up and comers. It’s not without trying though.

In our piece, ‘Early Preview – 2021 ACC Pigskin Picks‘, the writers selected Clemson as the team to beat in the conference once again this season. But, not everyone thinks the Tigers will run the board this season and that has the potential of opening up spots in the Top 25 and ultimately, post-season play for a number of teams. Will Ojanen and I discussed the list a bit more in detail on the latest ACC Nation Podcast. Be sure to subscribe.
