Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.

Monday Musings: Basketball & Football Recruiting Notes (SI; $; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball and football are about to see recruiting really pick up in June. Where do things stand with both programs? Why will June be an important month for the Orange? Full breakdown of that, an update on JJ Starling, who Syracuse may be battling with for point guards in the 2022 class and more.

Syracuse Priority Target Confidential: OL Chad Schuster (SI; $; McAllister)

Offensive line is always a critical area to recruit for any football program. As Syracuse has experienced in the last two years, a poor offensive line can derail a season. Syracuse is after one of the best in the Midwest in offensive tackle Chad Schuster. Where does Syracuse stand with Schuster? Why is he such a critical target for the Orange? Full breakdown here.

End of recruiting pause has football programs catching up (AP; Megargee)

Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck spoke for many coaches nationwide last December when he noted he still hadn’t shaken the hands of about half the prospects who were about to sign with his program.

Those days finally are coming to an end.

The NCAA has lifted the recruiting dead period that has been in place since March 13, 2020, due to the pandemic. The NCAA returned to its usual recruiting calendar Tuesday, allowing prospects to meet coaches in person and for coaches to conduct live evaluations of recruits.

That means programs across the country are going to make up for lost time.

“It’s going to be crazy,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said.

The change is a relief for high school football players such as Max Reese, a wide receiver from Fenwick High School in suburban Chicago. Reese has offers from Bowling Green and Northern Illinois, and he has visited both those Mid-American Conference schools. But he couldn’t meet the coaching staffs at either program during his visits because of pandemic-imposed restrictions.

Now he finally gets to speak face to face to the coaches who have been Zooming with him for the last year. That should give both the prospect and the staff a better idea of their interest in each other.

“It’s like dating a girl online,” Reese said. “You don’t know what you’re really getting until you see them in person.”

Ohio State assistant athletic director for player personnel Mark Pantoni uses a different analogy as he discussed how tough it has been for prospects to evaluate schools based on virtual campus tours.

“It’s cool when you see the commercial of the nice flashy car, but you don’t really know until you test drive it how cool it really is,” Pantoni said. “That’s what we’re about to do. These kids are about to test-drive the car finally after seeing the commercial for so many months.”

Clemson football: NCAA dead period is over, and so are recruiting woes (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

The Clemson football program has struggled mightily in the recruiting department since the NCAA imposed a Dead Period more than a year ago.

Recruits have not been able to meet on-campus with coaches and that has hurt Clemson in a big way.

All programs have been effected in one way or another, but there have been several recruitments during this time period where the Tigers weren’t able to get a solid footing that they likely would have if the prospect had been able to visit.

That all will be considered history as the calendar turns to June.

Hopefully as the Dead Period comes to an end, so does the recruiting woes for Clemson football
We all know that there’s something special about Clemson.

We’ve heard countless stories from fans of other teams who make the trip to Death Valley and just come back blown away with the entire area.

From the overall atmosphere to the electricity in the stadium to the breathtaking views to the ‘college town feel’ and everything in-between, people who have made the trip come way impressed and the same can be said about recruits. Oh, and we should probably throw in the fact that the Clemson football program has world-class facilities that stack up with any other program in the nation.

20-year Average Recruiting Rankings (RX; HM)

20-year Average Recruiting Rankings

Great find by AllThingsFSU: Rivals Rankings Turn 20: How Power Five programs have ranked in recruiting.

Only one ACC team made the top 10, but four more made the top 27, which ain't bad, really.

TOP TEN
1. GEORGIA (6.45 average class ranking)
2. LSU (7.35)
3. ALABAMA (8)
4. FLORIDA (8.95)
5. USC (9.3)
6. FLORIDA STATE (9.4)

It’s hard to believe that Florida State has never had the No. 1 recruiting class in 20 years of Rivals Rankings history but the Seminoles have been close numerous times. They finished second, third or fourth multiple times over the years and that’s why the Seminoles' average-class finish is still so high despite some lean years and struggles on the recruiting trail recently.
Second-year coach Mike Norvell is trying to turn things around but FSU has finished outside the top-15 for three-straight classes, the first time that has happened to the ‘Noles in Rivals history.

7. OHIO STATE (9.45)
8. OKLAHOMA (10.25)
9. TEXAS (10.95)
10. AUBURN (11.65)

Grad Rates 2021 (RX; HM)

Grad Rates 2021

While we usually focus on the athletics, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that these colleges are institutions of education first and foremost... so, how are they doing at that mission? BGB takes a look in this tweet:

College Graduation Rate Rankings - FBS Schools pic.twitter.com/NPSe8nrxdN
— Big Game Boomer (@BigGameBoomer) May 29, 2021
Let's break it down for the ACC, shall we?
Take a look at the top of the rankings:

1. Notre Dame
2. Duke
3. Virginia
5. Boston College

That's four ACC schools in the top five - 80%! And there's plenty of depth behind those:

14. UNC
15. Georgia Tech
17. Wake Forest
22. Virginia Tech

More than half of the ACC schools are in the top 25.

30. Clemson
32. Florida State
33. Miami
35. Pitt
36. Syracuse
37. NC State

Most Wins by State, 2011-20 (RX; HM)

Most Wins by State, 2011-20

Cardinal redemption...

Fox tweeted the CFB team (FBS) with the most wins over the last decade, by state. It's very similar to a tweet we saw (and commented on) from Big Game Boomer (see Most Wins Since 2010, by State), except this one from Fox cuts off the year at 2011 instead of 2010, which changes a few states.*

Here's a look at every FBS team with the most wins from each state in the last ten years

Which team is the most surprising? pic.twitter.com/TAoHvbKLDX
— FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) May 28, 2021
Here's how the ACC footprint states went in the Fox tweet:
FL - Florida State
GA - Georgia
IN - Notre Dame
KY - Louisville
MA - Boston College
NC - Appalachian St
NY - Army/Buffalo
PA - Penn State
SC - Clemson
VA - Virginia Tech

Observations.

Good news: the ACC owns the team with the best record in six of the 10 states, including three states with SEC member schools in them!
Bad news: all four ACC teams in North Carolina got beat out by a Sun Belt team, and Syracuse got beat out in New York - by two G5 teams! Georgia Tech and Pitt also lost out, but to P5 teams which have been in contention for New Year's Six bowls, so that's a little easier to swallow.
Comparison: Most ACC states had the same top winner in both posts, but there was one notable difference - Kentucky. BGB listed WKU as the school with the most wins, while Fox says it's Louisville. Sorry, BGB, but I think Fox is correct (Louisville 81, WKU 73).*

From All Sports Discussion: Ranking the 5 best Quarterbacks in the ACC for 2021.
I agree with the top 5, but not sure about the order. Specifically, I'm not convinced that their #3 is really the third best QB.

Miami football ESPN FPI wins at 7.9 questioned by national media outlet (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football team has their won-loss total set at 7.9 and 4.4 according to the ESPN Football Power Index. With a season-opening game against Alabama at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta on September 4 and at North Carolina on October 16, the Hurricanes face a challenging schedule.

The rest of the Miami football schedule has challenges. The Hurricanes host Group of Five Power Appalachian State and Michigan State before they finish their non-conference schedule against FCS Central Connecticut State. Miami begins ACC play when they host Virginia on September 30.

Miami also hosts Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech in 2021 with games at Duke, Florida State and Pittsburgh. Miami is ranked higher in the FPI than every opponent in 2021 except Alabama and North Carolina. The Hurricanes are set up to make a run similar to their 2020 season.

Miami returns 19 starters in 2021 led by quarterback D‘Eriq King. King should be a Heisman Trophy and all-American candidate and compete to earn All-ACC. Transfers, defensive end DeAndre Johnson, wide receiver Charleston Rambo and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson will be key players for Miami in 2021.

“The Hurricanes must get D’Eriq King 100% healthy to challenge in the ACC Coastal. The opening game vs. Alabama is a mammoth showdown for the ACC…Could the Hurricanes take a step back this season? Eight wins might be the ceiling for Miami, per ESPN’s FPI projection.

'Plan B’ director, cast share stories from filming in Syracuse, NY

‘Plan B’ stars, director had a lot of fun filming in Syracuse and it shows (video) (PS; $; Herbert)

Plan B,” a new American High movie out now on Hulu, was a lot of fun to shoot in Syracuse.

“Plan B” director Natalie Morales and stars Kuhoo Verma (”The Big Sick”) and Victoria Moroles (MTV’s “Teen Wolf”) sat down for an interview with syracuse.com | The Post-Standard sharing their favorite experiences filming in Central New York. The raunchy teen comedy follows a straight-laced high school student (Verma) who, after a regrettable first sexual encounter, gets help from her slacker best friend (Moroles) to search for a morning-after pill after the local pharmacist (played by “Super Troopers” star Jay Chandrasekhar) refuses to give them Plan B.

The movie is set in South Dakota but was filmed entirely in the Syracuse area last fall, including at the former A.V. Zogg Middle School in Liverpool (now Syracuse Studios), the Main Street Pharmacy in Marcellus, Onondaga Lake Parkway, and the Hilltop Restaurant and Cedar House Bowling Center in Skaneateles.

“Yeah, it’s a little weird” to pretend you’re in South Dakota while in Syracuse, admitted Verma, who plays Sunny. “But it feels like there’s a lot of space in Syracuse. Everything’s a little bit spread out already, and different from my life here in Brooklyn. It did feel like we were in a tiny little bubble of a different plane of existence.”
