Welcome to Go Fly a Kite Day!

Fly a Kite Day takes place on the anniversary of the date in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm, with the intent of proving that lightning was caused by a discharge of electricity (some sources say he flew his kite on June 10). His experiment led to further understanding of positive and negative charges, the proving that lightning was an electrical discharge, and to the invention of the lightning rod—which provided a safe way to discharge electricity and a way to prevent fires. Lightning rods are still used today to protect buildings, ships, and people.

Franklin began his experiments with electricity in 1747 and began hypothesizing about the connection between electricity and lightning two years later. He set out to prove his hypothesis; his idea was to erect iron rods into storm clouds to attract electricity. He believed he would need to be on high ground for his experiment to work, but he was in Philadelphia, a city that is quite flat. At first, he was waiting for the steeple to be finished at Christ Church, believing that he could use it for his experiment.

Christ Church still stands. The steeple was completed in 1754, financed by a lottery organized by Franklin. It would be the tallest structure in North America for 56 years.

Syracuse Hosted 2022 Kicker for Monday Visit (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2022 Concord (Mass.) Middlesex School kicker Liam Connor took an unofficial visit to Syracuse on Monday to get his first in person look at the school and the program.

"The visit was awesome," Connor said. "Just tour of the facilities, campus."

After touring the school, Connor came away impressed by what Syracuse has to offer.

"I loved it," Connor said. "Everything was super convenient on both the main campus and the football facilities. Not to mention how top notch the indoor facility was. The campus was beautiful as well."

Syracuse has a need to bring in a kicker in the 2022 class, potentially on scholarship. Andre Szmyt could be gone after this season, but definitely will be after 2022. Scouting kickers and bringing some in for visits makes sense. Connor getting a close look at the campus and speaking with the coaches helps develop that relationship as the Orange continues to monitor his development.

Item: When Wake Forest (October 9) and Boston College (October 30) play inside the Dome this season and after Syracuse travels to Louisville (November 13), it will mark the first time the Orange have played an ACC team three straight years either home or away in the nine seasons they have been conference members. Overall, three straight games against an opponent in consecutive years home or away is uncommon in the post-World War II era (1945-present) of Syracuse football (it did happen often in the first half of the 20th century), occurring only three other times against two opponents.

Due to the pandemic plagued 2020 season, the schedules for most college football teams were left in disarray due to conference decisions and state government restrictions. That included Syracuse in terms of its odd/even year and home and away rotation among its six Atlantic Division rivals:

ACC Odd Years

  • Home = Boston College/Clemson/Wake Forest/Pittsburgh-Primary Crossover Opponent
  • Away = Florida State/Louisville/North Carolina State/Coastal Crossover Opponent
ACC Even Years
  • Home = Florida State/Louisville/North Carolina State/Coastal Crossover opponent
  • Away = Boston College/Clemson/Wake Forest/Pittsburgh-Primary Crossover Opponent
The ACC limited teams to one non-conference matchup in 2020’s 11-game schedule, and Notre Dame became a one-year conference participant, facing SU instead of the Orange meeting division rival Florida State in the Dome. It also set into motion the conference going back to the odd/even year alteration, bringing BC and Wake back to the Dome again, and the ‘Cuse traveling to the ‘Ville.

What Willie Tyler's decommitment means for Syracuse OL this fall; 8 potential targets in the portal (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

The outlook for Syracuse football's 2021 offensive line and, in turn, its season, took a hit on Friday when Willie Tyler announced his decommitment. While the graduate transfer from Texas had yet to play a Football Bowl Subdivision snap, he was expected to compete for a starting job during preseason camp. Now, the Orange is left to scramble for a replacement about six weeks from the start of the fall.

The immediate takeaway from Tyler's decision is that sixth-year returner...

Athlon Sports reveals preseason All-ACC teams for 2021 season (247sports.com; Mivision)

The ACC football season isn’t too far away now so it’s a good time to project who will be the best players in the conference for the 2021 season. Despite a good amount of talent moving on to the NFL or transferring, the ACC is full of play makers at every position.

Athlon Sports released their All-ACC teams for the upcoming season. But, they have a method on how they picked the first, second, third and fourth teams.

“An important note on the all-conference teams: These are based on how players will perform in 2021,” Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports wrote. “Career statistics and awards matter in the evaluation, but choosing players for the 2021 all-conference team is largely based on predicting and projecting the best for the upcoming year.”

Let’s break down Athlon’s picks for the All-ACC squad in 2021-22.

First Team: Nick Sciba, K, Wake Forest; Lou Hedley, P, Miami; Bam Knight, KR, NC State; Thayer Thomas, PR, NC State

Ranking ACC football schedules toughest to easiest (247sports.com; Seats)

The Atlantic Coast Conference has a full slate in store for the 2021 college football season. After the ACC implemented a conference-only schedule that included Notre Dame as a member due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the non-conference matchups are back on the table and the Fighting Irish have returned to independent status.

With a clearer path, Clemson is considered the preseason favorite again. The Tigers have won six straight conference titles and are eyeing number seven this fall. Equipped with the ACC’s top-ranked recruiting class, Dabo Swinney’s squad is poised to tear through what appears to be a manageable schedule relative to their talent level.

Other programs, some expected to be ranked inside the Top-25, didn’t get as lucky with their lineup as not all schedules are created equal.

Virginia Tech football: Lane Stadium will be 100% capacity this fall (gobblercontry.com; Manning)

The news we’ve all been waiting for came down on Monday when Virginia Tech announced Lane Stadium would have 100% capacity this fall for the 2021 college football season.

Finally!

Yes, we’ve expected it for some time, but there was still a sense of dread until it was official.

That means Virginia Tech’s season-opener against North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 3, will feature a full crowd for the first time in almost two years. Blacksburg would be rocking regardless of the opponent, but you add in hated rival UNC, and a Friday night game, it is going to be fun.

Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock had the following to say about the return to full capacity:

We are excited to welcome Hokie Nation back home this season. There is no place else in college football like Lane Stadium when ‘Enter Sandman’ starts playing and the whole place starts jumping. I know how much our coaches and players missed having that home-field advantage last season, and I also realize how anxious our fans are to see the Hokies play in person in 2021. We can’t wait to see everyone on September 3. Sincere thanks to our fans for their patience and unwavering support throughout this process, as well as a special thank you to our coaches, student-athletes, and staff who persevered through the challenges of the past year.

Boston College Football: 2021 Eagles Season Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com; Staff)

Boston College hasn't knocked off an AP Top 25 opponent since it upset No. 9 USC in 2014. Steve Addazio's tenure ended with 16 straight losses to programs ranked in the AP Poll. From 2016-19, ranked opponents drubbed Addazio's teams by an average of 30 points. BC scrounged together 10.2 points per game in those matchups, scoring a lone touchdown on six occasions. The Eagles were a national afterthought.

That changed when Jeff Hafley took over.

After turning around Ohio State's defense in 2019, Hafley revitalized a BC program that was stuck in neutral and projected by many to finish in the ACC's basement last season. Although the Eagles didn't earn that coveted ranked win in 2020, they did come closer than they have in years. BC was a two-point conversion away from forcing overtime against 12th-ranked North Carolina and lost to No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Notre Dame by a combined 20 points.

Perhaps most importantly, though, Hafley's staff and players established a culture that saw BC go five straight months without a positive COVID-19 test. And now they're bringing back a total of 18 starters on offense and defense with a much lighter schedule than last year's slate.

Miami Football picked second in ACC Coastal by Athlon Sports (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football team is picked second in the ACC Coastal Division behind North Carolina by Athlon Sports. After losing two straight games to North Carolina including a 62-26 blowout last season, the Hurricanes are going to have to prove they can defeat the Tar Heels under Mack Brown.

The Miami football team returns 19 starters. Replacing defensive ends Jaelan Phillips a first-round pick of the Dolphins and Quincy Roche a sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers will be the most glaring question for the Hurricanes entering the 2021 season. Will Mallory will replace Brevin Jordan at tight end.

The Miami offense improved significantly in 2020. The Hurricanes defense declined in 2020. Poor play from the Hurricanes linebackers Miami has to do a better job of limiting long rushing plays in 2021. The Hurricanes were last in the ACC in rushing plays allowed of 40, 50 and 60 plus yards.

The return of D’Eriq King as the quarterback is who Miami will build the foundation of its 2021 team. King provided the Hurricanes a dynamic presence on offense and changed the culture throughout the team. Miami did not have leadership at QB in 2019. King has changed the Miami QB room for the foreseeable future.

“2. Miami
The Hurricanes were a much-improved team in coach Manny Diaz’s second year at the helm. Quarterback D’Eriq King gives this team a chance to earn a trip to a New Year’s Six bowl, but the defense has to reload in order to defeat North Carolina at the top of the division.

CFP: What would 12-team playoff be worth? (RX; HM)

In the AP article "CFP Expansion Could Increase Annual Revenue To $2 Billion", author Ralph Russo estimates that...

The television rights for a proposed 12-team playoff could be worth about $1.9 billion annually, according to projections from Navigate Research, which consults with professional sports leagues and college conferences.

That's up 4X as much as the current 4-team playoff, which shouldn't surprise anyone. Beside adjusting for inflation (every year, TV media rights are worth a little more), there's also the fact that 12 teams means nearly 4X as many games as 4 teams. Even though you're only tripling the number of teams, a single-elimination tournament (which the CFP is) will always have N-1 games (where N is the number of teams).

11/3 = 3.67X as many games.

Add to that the fact that the very structure of the proposed 12-team CFP would virtually guarantee increased fan engagement throughout the nation and you can see where the $1.9 billion estimate comes from. Oh, I forgot to factor in ticket sales for all those new games...

The Chicago-based company said ticket sales and sponsorship deals that currently account for about 15% of College Football Playoff revenue could push the total takeaway to more than $2 billion per year.

Links, news and rumors - 2021 June 15th (RX; HM)

According to 247Sports, only 16 teams have signed enough "blue chip" players to contend for a national championship, and only two of them are in the ACC... Clemson is one, but North Carolina isn't. Read about that in "Blue-Chip Ratio 2021: The 16 teams who can win a national title"

When lower ranked teams would've jumped into a CFP-12 (RX; HM)

Reddit tried to list the teams which were jumped by lower-ranked conference champs. It didn't turn out so well, as far as I can tell...
Here's a list of lower ranked teams that would have made it in over higher ranked teams during the BCS/CFP eras under the proposed 6 highest champs + 6 at larges format. pic.twitter.com/jgyKNaw19S

Here are the ACC-related "jumpers":
2002: #14 FSU over #12 Penn State - except the BCS rankings actually had Florida State 12th, Penn State 15th, so this wasn't really a jump at all.
2010: #13 VT over #12 Mizzou - this is incorrect; there were 6 FBS champs ahead of Virginia Tech (Auburn-SEC, Oregon-Pac12, TCU-MWC, Wisconsin-B1G, Oklahoma-XII, and Boise State-WAC); after the WAC died and Boise joined the MWC, sure.
2011: #15 Clemson over #11 VT - The Hokies lost the ACC CG, so it is what it is.
2013: #15 UCF over #12 Clemson - again, the BCS had Clemson ranked ahead of UCF, so not sure where they got this idea.
2014: #20 Boise State over #12 GT - this just highlights how dangerous it is to sit at #12...

One of Syracuse’s best-known corner bars is back: ‘Finally feels like the right time’ (PS; $; Cazentre)

It’s tempting to say that Shifty’s Bar & Grill in Eastwood is so clean that you won’t recognize it.

More than five months after closing in mid-Covid-19 pandemic, the 100-year-old corner bar at 1401 Burnet Ave. reopened at 11 a.m. today.

Don’t worry. Despite an intensive clean-up, new tables and chairs and some other large and small improvements, it’s still Shifty’s.

“Once our customers, our regulars, are back in it will look and feel just the same,” said Vicky Richardson, who co-owns Shifty’s with Ron Schultz. “It won’t take long at all.”

Today’s opening wasn’t exactly a doorbuster, but there was a steady stream of customers, mostly regulars, streaming in right at 11 a.m.

“It seems like I haven’t been here since last year,” said one of the many regulars who asked not to be identified because he was supposed to be at work.

Shifty’s had stayed open, mostly doing just take-out, for much of 2020. Then, when the state put the city of Syracuse in a restrictive Orange zone last November, prohibiting indoor dining again, Richardson and Schultz decided to close up and wait it out. It was last open, for takeout only, on Dec. 31.

“We’re a place for socializing, playing pool, listening to music, dancing,” Schultz said then. “If we can’t do those things, it’s not Shifty’s.”
