Welcome to National Ice Cream Sundae Day!

Ice cream sundaes—which are ice cream desserts with one or more scoops of ice cream with sauces or syrups, often with other toppings such as fruits, maraschino cherries, nuts, sprinkles, and whipped cream—are enjoyed on National Ice Cream Sundae Day. The "classic" ice cream sundae has vanilla ice cream topped with a flavored sauce or syrup, such as chocolate or strawberry, as well as whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Some variations of the sundae include the banana split, knickerbocker glory, turtle sundae, and tin roof sundae. Sundaes are also often topped with heated sauces or syrups such as hot fudge, butterscotch, and caramel.

There are a few stories as to how and where ice cream sundaes got their start. One says they got their start in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, in 1881. There, George Hallauer ordered an ice cream dish at Ed Berner's soda fountain. His dish gained popularity, and other nearby fountains began serving it. It was George Giffy, who owned a fountain in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, who decided to serve it only on Sundays—hence the name it received.

Mike McAllister "On The Block" 7-7 (ESPN; Radio; Axe)

Mike joins Brent to give some updates on recruiting for both Syracuse football and men’s basketball.

Trend Analysis: Syracuse Football Recruiting (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football recruiting. What has it looked like over the last five cycles? We decided to look at the positional and locational trending, but combining the last five full recruiting cycles (2017 through 2021) to see which positions the Orange targets the most and which states have been the most fruitful.

Note: The percentages listed below are out of the total number of players Syracuse has signed during the five recruiting cycles from 2017 to 2021.

BY POSITION

PositionPercentage
Defensive Line17.86%
Offensive Line16.07%
Linebacker16.07%
Wide Receiver13.39%
Safety9.82%
Cornerback7.14%
Running Back7.14%
Tight End6.25%
Quarterback5.36%
Kicker/Punter0.90%
There really is not anything surprising here. Most football rosters have offensive line and defensive line as the most voluminous positions. Perhaps a bit strange to see that much more at linebacker as opposed to cornerback, but that could change going forward with the 3-3-5. Keep in mind that most of those recruiting cycles were for Brian Ward's Tampa-2.

This is where things get really interesting. Syracuse has recruited Florida far more heavily than any other location. This despite the fact that in the 2021 recruiting cycle, Syracuse only signed one player from the Sunshine State due in large part to the pandemic. For comparison's sake, Syracuse did not sign fewer than four players from Florida in the other four cycles. In 2022, as things go back to the normal recruiting calendar, Syracuse already has three commits from the state.

New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania round out the next three and Canada following after that. The Northeast is a natural recruiting area for Syracuse, and Dino Babers has put an emphasis on Canada as well. Also of note are Syracuse's efforts in New England. Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire combine for 7.14%, or the same as New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The D-M-V (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) combine for 9.82%.

A number of outlets have ranked the ACC coaches and Dino Babers has found himself in last place of many of these rankings. The guys discuss whether or not they agree that he is the worst coach in the conference. Also, who are some of the coaches that Babers might be better than? Plus, Syracuse landed 3-star cornerback Quan Peterson over the weekend. The 2022 class continues to have a defensive emphasis.

Tyler Aki and Tim Leonard discuss it all and more on the Wednesday edition of the Locked on Syracuse Podcast.

Football: An early look at Ohio's 2021 nonconference opponents (thepostathens.com; Feazell)

After an already shortened 2020 season in which Ohio only played three of its six scheduled games, the Bobcats are preparing to return to a more standard schedule in 2021 as coach Frank Solich prepares for his 17th season in Athens.

Ohio’s schedule was limited to only Mid-American Conference games last year. That won’t be the case this season, as the Bobcats have four nonconference teams lined up for the year. The mix includes two Power Five teams, an FCS school and a familiar Group of Five foe.

Here’s an early look at Ohio’s four nonconference opponents:

September 4: Syracuse

The Bobcats open their season by hosting Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Syracuse. While the Orange are a Power Five team, they’ve hit a rough patch after their 10-3 2018 campaign.

After a 5-7 2019 season, the Orange followed that up with a dismal 1-10 record in 2020, their worst record since 2005. Head coach Dino Babers — a former MAC Championship winning coach with Bowling Green in 2015 – has a 24-36 record with the Orange entering his sixth season at the helm. Despite these troubling numbers, don’t expect Syracuse to just be a soft week one opponent.

Syracuse’s offense is expected to improve in 2021, partially thanks to addition of Mississippi State transfer quarterback Garrett Shrader, who will give the Orange a dual-threat option on offense. Shrader will make work easier on the offensive line, which allowed the third-most sacks in the country with 38 last season.
The offensive line was also plagued with inexperience and health concerns all season.

Now, Syracuse should have capable and experienced starters at all five offensive line positions. One such starter is Florida transfer Chris Bleich, who brings much needed experience at guard.

The Orange return 10 starters on defense. Despite losing talented defensive backs Ifeatu Melifonwu and Andre Cisco to the NFL, Syracuse’s defense is another half of the team that will benefit from more experience to improve in 2021. Mikel Jones, McKinley Williams and Josh Black could put up bigger numbers in the front seven this season. Meanwhile, Garrett Williams and Ja’Had Carter may also be able to use their experience to follow up what Melifonwu and Cisco brought to the Orange.

Despite being a Power Five team, the game against Syracuse is winnable for Ohio, and such a win would be an excellent start to Ohio’s return to a nonconference schedule. The Orange will be just as hungry for victory, however. They will be eager to prove they are not the same team as they were in 2020.

Opponent Analysis: NC State Wolfpack — 2021 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Sears)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team opponent preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re previewing Syracuse’s matchup with NC State on Nov. 20 with three major storylines.

Can Devin Leary Pick Up Where He Left Off?

When redshirt sophomore Devin Leary came off the bench in week two at Virginia Tech in 2020, it’s safe to say no one expected the run he’d go on. He played well in relief of Bailey Hockman, going 12-16 for 125 yards and a touchdown, but really excelled the next week.

In his first career start against Pitt, he went 28-44 for 336 yards and four touchdowns. Leary then went undefeated over the next three games, throwing for 725 yards and seven touchdowns against only two interceptions.

Unfortunately, in his third game, a home win against Duke, Leary fractured his fibula in the second half and his season was over. However, those three straight wins set the Wolfpack up at 4-1 and they would continue to play well en route to an 8-4 record.

There’s no denying Devin Leary’s talent. All accounts are that he’s healthy and ready to go, so the only question will be if he can pick up where his brilliant sophomore season left off.

Best and Worst Road Trips for Clemson football in 2021 (theclemsoninsider.com; podcast; Robert & Alex)

Clemson fans will once again hit the road this fall to support the Tigers.

Robert and Alex hit the TCI studio to discuss the best and worst road trips for Clemson football in 2021.

2021 Schedule Preview and Prediction: Clemson at Syracuse (tigernet.com; Wagner)

Following the Clemson off-week after the Boston College game this season, the Tigers will travel to Syracuse, New York for a Friday kickoff to mark the halfway point of the 2021 regular season. With the game being held in the Carrier Dome, it will mark the first regularseason Friday night game since the Tigers lost 27-24 to Dino Babers and the Orange in the Dome in 2017.

Clemson took last year's game by a score of 47-21, but that score does not tell the whole story. There were fans were saying that Dabo Swinney and the Tigers came out flat and a halftime score of 27-14 was not up to par with what Clemson fans expected. The game got close in the third quarter when the Orange struck first, scoring a touchdown to cut the lead to 27-21.

Travis Etienne scored two rushing touchdowns in the fourth and Andrew Booth had a fumble return for a touchdown to make the final score look a little more favorable for the Tigers as they moved to 6-0 on the season and dropped Syracuse to 1-5.

Overall, Clemson leads the series 7-2 and have been winners of the last three dating back to that Friday night game in 2017. The games have often been close with Syracuse and you don’t have to look back far to remember the Chase Brice-hero game in 2018 when Trevor Lawrence left with an injury and Brice leading the Tigers on a game-winning drive to keep the National Championship hopes alive.

This season will be year six of the Babers era in New York in what has been an up-and-down coaching hire. He has a 24-36 overall record, and after a 10-3 record in 2018, Syracuse fans thought they found their guy to help turn the corner. That trend, however, hasn't continued as Syracuse finished 2019 with a 5-7 record and then went 1-10 last season. This could easily be a make-or-break year for Babers as Syracuse fans want the team to be competitive and fight for a chance at their first ACC title.

Syracuse Offense

Last year was one to forget for Syracuse on both sides of the ball. The offense averaged just 17 points and a dismal 265 yards of offense per game. Before the season, the Orange had a string of bad luck when their top two running backs, Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard, opted out, as well as injuries on the offensive line basically that made the rushing attack non-existent last season. The offense relied heavily on quarterback Tommy DeVito who threw for over 500 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. DeVito will battle during fall camp with transfer quarterback Garrett Shrader, a dual-threat quarterback from Mississippi State. It’s unsure who will be taking the snaps under center in week one, but DeVito does have two years under his belt in Babers’ system.

Interstate 81 Syracuse looking north along I-81. January 4, 2019. Lauren Long | llong@syracuse.com N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com

Another exit? More job details? What Syracuse’s leaders are expecting in next I-81 plan (PS; $; Weaver)

Lawyer Lanessa Owens-Chaplin wants the portion of Interstate 81 that hangs over some of the city’s poorest families to come down.

But that doesn’t mean that she, and the New York Civil Liberties Union that she represents, agree with all the details currently inside the state’s $2 billion plan to take down I-81 and reshape Syracuse’s highway system.

So she and other local leaders have been meeting with state transportation officials to talk through concerns that range from public safety during construction to congestion during rush hours.

In some cases, they’re having some success.

Two years ago, the DOT’s plan called for using a part of Wilson Park – the main green space within the Pioneer Homes public housing complex – as the I-81 project’s staging area. After pushback from the community, the state has changed course, Owens-Chaplin said.

“It’s not going to be a staging site, but they will add fencing as a buffer” to keep people from getting too close to the construction site, she said.

She said she expects that change to be in the state’s Department of Transportation’s newest version of the I-81 plan, an environmental review that’s expected to be released later this month.
