Welcome to Baby Boomers Recognition Day!

Baby Boomers Recognition Day is dedicated to baby boomers, the generation that was born between roughly the years of 1946 and 1964. There was an uptick in births during this time, which was spurred by an economic boom and a longing for a return to normalcy after the Great Depression and war. Early baby boomers came of age during the Summer of Love and Woodstock, and grappled with issues such as the Vietnam War during a time of great social change. In general, early baby boomers tended to be more liberal than later baby boomers, although many early baby boomers' politics shifted towards the right in the 1980's. To date, three United States Presidents have been baby boomers: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump. Their varying ideologies demonstrate that the views of baby boomers are not monolithic. Rock & Roll and television were important parts of the lives of young baby boomers, and there was a belief while growing up that they were better off than those who came before them. Baby Boomers Recognition Day takes place on August 16 because that is one of the days that Woodstock took place in 1969. In fact, there are plans for a fifty year Woodstock reunion in 2019, which would be an apropos way to celebrate Baby Boomers Recognition Day.

Syracuse football standouts, storylines, takeaways 10 days into preseason camp (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football held its first scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday -- a critical juncture for positional battles across the roster. The offense ran 131 plays, including both thud and live tackling periods, according to SU Athletics. The Orange's players will have just one other such opportunity to make an impression on the coaching staff before game preparation begins for SU's season opener at Ohio on Sept. 4.

SyracuseOn247 has collected insight and information via numerous conversations, including on-record interviews and background talks, to better understand how the team's two-deep depth chart is developing.

Here's what we've learned:

2021 Syracuse Football Positional Preview: Linebackers (waer.org)

After the disappointing 1-10 season last year for Syracuse football, there are plenty of questions on both sides of the ball. Who’s going to be under center? What’s the word at tight end? What will the defense do in year two of the 3-3-5 defense? Something the Orange faithful don’t have to question as much is the linebackers.

As a whole, it was not pretty for the defense. SU finished dead last in the ACC in yards allowed per game with about 464. Even though the numbers were disappointing, guys like Mikel Jones, Geoff Cantin-Arku and Stefon Thompson will be back. They were a part of a linebacker room that recorded an FBS-leading 24 takeaways last season. Lee Kpogba - who made 44 tackles and appeared in every game last year - and Tyrell Richards - a redshirt junior who had 54 tackles for the Orange - won’t be back this fall. So who’s going to fill in? Can Jones, who forced an ACC-tying 4 interceptions, contribute greatly once again? Can this group show even more flashes in 2021’s campaign?

Without further ado, here is a preview of the Syracuse linebackers, a bright spot on this year on the SU team.

Mikel Jones, Junior

From top to bottom, Jones is the best linebacker in this group. The Miami native can pick off passes, force fumbles and can make a lot of tackles. The IMG Academy product had four interceptions last season and was involved in eight different takeaways, the most by any player in the FBS. The accolades don’t stop there, though. Jones led the team with 69 tackles and emerged as one of the nation’s best linebackers. The 6-foot-1, 220 lbs. defender has the ability to be the focal point of the entire defense this fall.

Garrett Williams Goes in First Round in Latest 2022 NFL Mock Draft (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse cornerback Garrett Williams is on the radar of NFL scouts and draft experts. In the latest mock draft by SI's NFL Draft Bible, Williams is projected to go in the four round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In fact, he is going to the Philadelphia Eagles with the 18th overall selection.

Here is what the Jack Borowsky, Assistant Scouting Director and Writer for NFL Draft Bible, had to say about the pick.

"The Eagles seem to have a revolving door at cornerback. They addressed one side by trading for Darius Slay Jr. but need to add someone to play alongside him. Syracuse put three defensive backs in the NFL from last year's roster, and Williams has the upside to be better than all of them. His football IQ is off the charts for such a young player. His instincts allow him to stay in phase with receivers and make plays in both the pass and run games. Williams' game is similar to Jaire Alexander, and he has the talent to develop into a player of that caliber at the next level."

William's current NFL Draft profile via NFL Draft Bible's Cory Ezring:

Pros: To stand out as a redshirt freshman in a defensive backfield full of future NFL draft picks is no easy feat. Nevertheless, Garrett Williams was outstanding in his first year on the field at Syracuse. The talented corner’s quick feet, fluid change of direction, clean deceleration and twitchy movement skills are immediately apparent on film. These traits translate to sudden transitions with very little wasted movement. Williams uses his movement skills to his advantage in coverage. The young defensive back consistently mirrors in soft press and off coverage. He also has the speed and burst to cover breaking routes and speed-based patterns. What’s more, Williams plays with a controlled physicality at the line of scrimmage and the top of the route stem. In other words, he engages enough to impact the route while remaining safe against route salesmanship. The Syracuse standout also practices sound eye discipline in man coverage. In zone coverage, Williams reads and reacts to the quarterback with effortless fluidity. He plays with sufficient spatial awareness and has the burst to click and close. When Williams takes false steps or flips his hips early, he has the loose hips and burst to recover. Similarly, he typically takes impressive angles to the catch point. At the catch point, Williams is physical and has the hand-eye coordination to play the ball. He consistently times his breaks well. After the catch and against the run, Williams is an excellent and efficient tackler. He repeatedly works through or around blocks and finishes at the tackle point. Moreover, he maintains contain and plays the ballcarrier’s outside leg.

Syracuse Football opens on the road for the fourth straight season (TNIAAM; Wall)

That’s right folks it’s everyone’s favorite Syracuse Orange football topic- scheduling. This time we’re not talking about future schedules but did you know that when Syracuse starts the 2021 season against the Ohio Bobcats this will mark the fourth straight season that the Orange have opened up on the road?

We might give Syracuse a little reprieve for last year as the adjusted ACC schedule was out of the school’s control. However, since 2010 the Orange have chosen to open with two road games four times. Syracuse doesn’t have a game scheduled for the 2022 opening weekend which means they will likely start with an ACC game. If the conference sends them on the road that would make it a fifth season with two road games to begin the year which is rare for a P5 football program. The Orange also have Purdue and Notre Dame on the schedule next year so it would be wise for John Wildhack to be really aggressive in getting that opening week game in the Dome.

The reason we talk about scheduling so much around here is because this isn’t helping Syracuse in comparison to the schools many consider our peers in the Atlantic Division (and Pitt our annual Coastal “rival”). Take a look at who those teams have played during their non-conference schedule.

Orange Watch: 2021 Syracuse football game-by-game predictions, Part I - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: It’s bowl game or bust for the 2021 Orange, with arguably the best young talent of any of the six rosters in the Dino Babers era (roughly 66% of the roster are sophomores/freshman including redshirts in those classes). There’s also a mix of some experienced players on both lines and at quarterback, along with a positive attitude that permeates through the program.

Here’s our annual pre-season prognostications of each game in chronological order, starting with games 1-6 (Part II runs Tuesday 8/24):

It’s rare that college football transactional news breaks over the summer months, but that’s exactly what happened on July 14. Longtime Ohio football coach Frank Solich, the winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history, announced his retirement that morning due to health reasons (a cardiovascular issue), ending a 55-year coaching career, the last 16 successfully running the Bobcats program with bowl appearances in 10 of the last 11 seasons. Offensive coordinator Tim Albin has seamlessly taken over, so Syracuse coaches will have a pretty good idea how to game plan the most crucial season opener in Babers six seasons. After a close game for three quarters, SU, behind Tommy Devito, will get a late short touchdown run on a time-eating drive to turn away pesky Ohio 31-20. (1-0)

Since then-athletic director John Currie botched the Greg Schiano hiring at Tennessee in November 2017, the Volunteers are just 16-19 overall-10-16 in SEC play, and on their second coach after Josh Heupel replaced Jeremy Pruitt this past off season. Tennessee’s loss turned out to be Rutgers’s gain, as Schiano leveraged his past success leading New Jersey’s State University to a mega-deal for his second go-round starting last season. The 33,000 fans venturing inside the newly air-conditioned Dome for the 2:00 p.m. ET home opener are grateful for the comfort on the 75-degree day outside. To Orange Nation, other than the same aluminum seating the building and giant video board look beautiful, the time to purchase concessions has been drastically reduced, and there are even moderations to the rest rooms. On the field, it’s a grudge match. Tied at 27 with under 2:00 to play, Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal puts the Orange ahead 30-27, then an ensuing Rutgers 4th and 1 play at the SU 45-yard line is stuffed by linebacker Mikel Jones (sporting jersey No. 3 this season) with under 0:10 to play. (2-0)

One day, former Syracuse-area high school star quarterback Will Fiacchi (Marcellus) is likely to fulfill his ambition to be a college football head coach. For now, he’s in his fifth year at his alma mater coaching the UAlbany wide receivers and serves as recruiting coordinator under Greg Gattuso. Fiacchi is the school’s all-time passing leader (7,150 yards) after starting 35 consecutive games for the Great Danes between 2011-14. Against Syracuse, Gattuso wishes Fiacchi still had eligibility as the SU D-line overwhelms the less talented FCS member’s O-line, sacking UAlbany quarterback Jeff Undercuffler five times, and DL Kingsley Jonathan scoops up a fumble for a 5-yard score in the third quarter in a 40-7 rout. (3-0)

As a member of the AFCA Board of Coaches, Babers is one of 65 coaches from FBS schools who vote each week during the season (7 of the 14 ACC schools have coaches voting) in the USA Today coaches’ poll. For the first iteration of the poll this season, the pre-season list announced on August 10, Babers may have had a say in Liberty receiving enough votes to place 30th on the list (Liberty was 29th in the AP preseason poll released Monday). It’s been quite a program building accomplishment for Hugh Freeze, and he has one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the country in Malik Willis. The junior contributed 240-yards of offense in the Flames 38-20 win over the ‘Cuse in the Dome last season, the exact number of points Liberty averaged per game finishing 10-1 (the only loss was 15-14 to N.C. State). This year, there will be four lead changes in the second half, the last coming when a tipped Devito throw lands in the hands of Liberty linebacker Rashaad Harding who runs 32-yards for a touchdown to silence the Friday night Dome crowd in a 37-31 stunner. (3-1)

Former Syracuse TE Jose Cruz Battling Disease, Needs Help (SI; McAllister)

Former Syracuse tight end Jose Cruz needs help. Former teammates are spreading the word about a severe illness he was diagnosed with that has left him without a job and medical bills piling up. According to social media posts and a Go Fund Me page set up to raise funds for medical expenses, Cruz has been diagnosed with a severe case of Gastroparesis. Gastroparesis is a condition that affects stomach muscles from functioning properly including normal stomach emptying.

More details from the Go Fund Me page set up by his sister, where you can donate to help them pay for medical costs (goal is $80,000):

"Jose is my wonderful older brother who is suffering from severe Gastroparesis since March of 2020. The doctors are working tirelessly to find why this has happened to him. In the mean time, he cannot eat any food by mouth and has to feed through a feeding tube in his stomach. Due to his severe health issues he lost his job and health insurance and is paying for medical expenses out of pocket. His wife, Annie, is working 2 jobs to help their family! Jose and Annie have an amazing little boy, who is almost 3 years old, who’s name is Nash. Nash is the sweetest and smartest little boy trying to understand what is happening to his Daddy. Please help Annie and Jose pay for testing and treatment so they can beat this!! Please donate any amount that you can! Jose, we all love you, Annie and Nash so much!! ️ Please Pray for Jose! Please Share this page!!"

Cruz played for Syracuse during the 2010 season after transferring in from Hofstra following the termination of the Hofstra football program. He caught 13 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown during that campaign which ended with a Pinstripe Bowl victory.

Syracuse Football: Will the Orange bust, or end up bowl-bound? (itlh; Fiello)

One of our football gurus takes a look at the Syracuse football 2021 schedule and provides some insights on these games.

It’s almost here, as Syracuse football kicks off its 2021 season in less than three weeks. How will the season unfold? Well, below I take my first very high-level look at where I think this team’s wins…and losses will come from. Will we improve on last year? Might we even threaten for a Bowl?

Now, it’s important to remember. There are always surprises. There are always teams that play better than expected, and always teams that play worse. There are always injuries, and other unexpected twists and turns.

And, despite my comments below, I embrace the words of my friend Orange Chuck who says, there’s no reason at all we can’t win every single game. Indeed, there are multiple projected “L’s” below I think the team absolutely can (and very well may) win.

@Ohio

A true 50:50 game by every measure (including betting line, which has consistently had this a 1 point game). This is a huge game for the Orange. I won’t go so far as to say a loss would tank the season…but a no-show certainly could. While losing a close one could likely be recoverable, getting beat handily would be a bad sign. I expect a win in a fairly close game. PREDICTION- Win (1-0)

Rutgers

Greg Schiano has Rutgers playing better football lately , and this may be a bit of a heart over head pick. But if the Orange are, in fact, able to get that win over Ohio in the opener, I absolutely see the crowd, excited to be in the newly renovated Dome for the first time, helping fuel a tough Orange victory here. PREDICTION- Win (2-0)

Syracuse Football: Is the quarterback situation really so bad? (itlh; Fiello)

Welcome to the third part of my four-part series discussing concerns I have heard or seen on social media that people think will be a struggle to overcome this year for Syracuse football. In part 3, I will examine Tommy DeVito and why I have faith in him, as well as how the team is set up just in case he does struggle. Here is a breakdown of the four parts I have discussed so far as well as what is left:

•Is This The Taj Harris Redemption Tour?
•Can The Offensive Line Tow The Line?
•Tommy DeVito: Are We Headed To Success City Or Struggle Town?
•With Winter Coming, Is Coach Babers Sitting Atop Seat Warmers? (coming soon)

October 20, 2018. Eric Dungey is struggling against UNC and with 5:07 left in the game, head coach Dino Babers decides to put in freshman Tommy DeVito, who throws not only the game-tying TD to help take the game to OT but also throws the game-winning TD pass in double overtime to win the game. DeVito also stepped in for Dungey in September against Wake Forest, guiding Syracuse football to victory and giving him ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

Why do I bring this up? I think it’s important that if we constantly discuss DeVito’s struggles last season and even some the season before that we remember that he had shown potential and leadership as well. Often times we see the struggles and want to shun them without taking the good and the bad both into consideration. I’m not a “what have you done for me lately” judge of someone’s character and abilities…I try to look at their whole story.

Syracuse Football: Waxing poetic about necessary revenge vs. Liberty (itlh; Fiello)

We take a look at Syracuse football against Liberty in a poetic way.

Hello everyone and welcome back to my Syracuse football poetry game preview

Where I take each game and break it down in an attempt to amuse you

This edition is week 4 as we end September at home with a revenge game

Last year Liberty won and I refuse to believe the outcome will be the same

I mean let’s be fair and give them credit where the credit is due and less flack

Coach Hugh Freeze who once coached in the SEC has them on the right track

His quarterback Malik Willis is also an SEC transfer from freaking Auburn

I still remember 1987 like it was yesterday so I’m rooting for a slaughter

Willis is considered a Heisman contender after winning 10 games last year

Hopefully Butkus Award nominee Mikel Jones can put him on his rear

Defeating that Liberty defense won’t leave our offense dull

Offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert will have his hands full

Could this be a game where we see Taj Harris‘ draft stock see a major upsurge

Or might Anthony Queeley or Courtney Jackson excel or another name emerge

This could be a game to test how this staff and players in 2021 will manage

Thankfully the Syracuse Orange will have the Dome field advantage

So hopefully the Loud House whether it’s hot in there or cold

Will be full of fans rocking like it’s summer in Weedsport of old

Hopefully we can end my birthday month with 4 wins…yay

First Look: Husband-and-wife team resurrects downtown Syracuse grab-and-go sandwich shop (PS; $; Miller)

The original plan was to open a gourmet taco stand somewhere in Central New York. Jessica Capels and Billy Brill, her husband of eight years, spent the past year working up recipes and creating a business plan. All they needed for their first-ever restaurant was a storefront.

As Jessica was perfecting her fresh red and green spicy taco sauces, a family friend who spent four decades running a sandwich shop in downtown Syracuse decided to retire. Joe Barbaro, 72, closed Joe’s Deli just as restaurants started reopening in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. He offered Jessica and Billy his shop just off the lobby of the M&T Bank Building at 250 S. Clinton St. in Armory Square.

“It really is a great location, but we quickly realized that this wasn’t a spot for a taco stand,” Billy said. “Jessica was able to modify the menu without having to overhaul all the recipes.”

The intimate space has five tables that can seat up to 10 customers, a counter that offers hot and cold artisan drinks from Peaks Coffee Co., and a small kitchen. They took over the store on May 1.

On June 7, Daybird became downtown’s newest grab-and-go breakfast and lunch spot. You can get a healthy meal packed with unique flavor for cheap.

Those red and green sauces Jessica had perfected for their taco stand? She reconstructed them into spreads that give a sandwich a southwestern flare without making a mess at your office desk or city bench. The specialty tacos they had planned on serving were reworked into unique sandwiches.

Jessica earned a degree from the Atlantic Culinary Academy in New Hampshire and then spent two years as a chef at Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Arizona. That’s where she developed a fancy for tortas. A torta is basically a taco sandwich ... with a soft roll instead of a tortilla, and a thick spread instead of salsa.

“That was the inspiration to our sandwiches here,” Jessica said. “The marinated meats and other ingredients are pretty much the same, but the feel and overall taste are much different.”

Dino Babers’ top priority was improving the offense. He knows how it should look, and he likes what he’s got (OS; $; Mink)

The biggest change agents this offseason come on the offensive side of the ball.

Syracuse couldn’t stand idle after another losing season in which the offense sunk to new lows in Dino Babers’ head coaching career.

An offense that averaged 40 points a game three years ago had nosedived toward the bottom of the country. The athletic director called the results “not acceptable to anyone” at the end of last season, and Babers worked through an offseason checklist to make it right.

He brought in a transfer quarterback in Garrett Shrader to fill a hole on the depth chart and raise the stakes in the competition to start.

Babers brought in more offensive linemen than in any other year — waiting for others to heal up — then hired an assistant from San Diego State with a new strong record of development to coach them up.
