Welcome to Women's Equality Day!

Women's Equality Day commemorates the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibits denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. Prior to its adoption, women were not guaranteed the right to vote on the national level. The first time an amendment dedicated to women's suffrage was introduced was in 1878, and similar amendments were introduced numerous times over the next 41 years until the House and Senate both approved the amendment in 1919. Then it needed to be approved by two-thirds of the states, and it was lobbied for by suffragists. On August 24, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state—and final state needed—to ratify it. On August 26, 1920, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed a proclamation that added the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution.

Fifty years to the day later, The National Organization for Women, led by Betty Friedan, held the Women's Strike for Equality. The day was known by some as Women's Equality Day. It was the largest protest for gender equality in United States history up until that time. Protests and rallies were held in more than 90 cities, with 100,000 women participating. In New York City alone, 50,000 women marched down Fifth Avenue.

Chad Schuster Commits to Syracuse, Discusses Decision (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse has picked up a commitment from Franklin (WI) High offensive lineman Chad Schuster. chuster is a 6-6, 280 pound offensive tackle who also had offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and several others. He also received interest from Iowa, Iowa State, Florida State, Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue and Wisconsin.

“I picked Syracuse because the education there is just unmatched and the coaches the second I got there for my visit treated me like family,” Schuster said. “The coaches also all have great history coaching and have done great things in their careers already.”

Schuster is the 12th player to commit to Syracuse's 2022 class overall and second offensive lineman joining Joe Cruz.

Originally, Schuster was recruited by former Syracuse offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh. After he left for Arizona State, the Orange hired Mike Schmidt as his replacement. Schmidt and Schuster quickly bonded, and that played a role in Schuster's decision.

“We have a really good relationship and I think that’s a big part of why I chose Syracuse,” Schuster said. “He’s a great guy and we clicked right away and I trust what he says and he believes in my skill set as a player so I think that was a huge factor.”

When Schuster returned home from his June official, he knew Syracuse was going to be the choice. Syracuse was the only power five school who offered despite limited junior film. That meant a lot to the 6-6 tackle.

Three-star offensive lineman Chad Schuster commits to SU football (PS; Curtis)

Three-star offensive lineman Chad Schuster has verbally committed to play football at Syracuse, he announced Wednesday.

Schuster, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive tackle, is a junior at Franklin High School in Wisconsin.

Syracuse extended a scholarship offer to Schuster on Oct. 23, 2020. He took an official visit to the campus in June. Schuster also held offers from Buffalo, Ball State, Bowling Green, Toledo and Illinois State.

Schuster is rated three stars and the 13th best player in the state of Wisconsin, according to 247Sports.com.

Schuster is the 12th recruit to commit to Syracuse’s 2022 class, headlined by three-star defensive lineman Q’yaeir Price and three-star wide receiver Donovan Brown. The Orange currently has three defensive linemen and three offensive linemen, thanks to Schuster’s pledge.

Previewing 2021 Syracuse Football’s First Six Opponents (waer.org; Mallea)

Syracuse’s 2021 football season begins in less than two weeks, and with it comes a chance to put the 1-10 2020 season firmly in the past. In order to do that though, the Orange will have to get off to a good start. So, here is a breakdown of the teams that SU will lineup against in the first half of the new season.

Ohio University

The Bobcats don’t provide a ton of information to go from after only playing three games last season, going 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The offense is led by a quarterback duo of redshirt sophomore Kurtis Rourke and redshirt fifth year Armani Rodgers. The receiving corps is headlined by redshirt senior Isiah Cox, who averaged over 20 yards per catch last season and led the team averaging 17 yards per catch in 2019. In the backfield, De’Montre Tuggle is a star for the Bobcats. The redshirt fifth year recorded seven touchdowns in 2020 and ran for 403 yards in just three games. Defensively, the Bobcats lack pass rushers after coming up with just four sacks in three games last year. Redshirt junior safety Jamison Collier leads the way in the secondary after finishing with a team-high 19 tackles in 2020.

Rutgers University

For the Scarlet Knights, 2020 marked the return of head coach Greg Schiano and the team’s best season since first joining the Big Ten in 2015, finishing with a record of 3-6. Schiano coached Rutgers from 2001 to 2011, turning around a program that had just four winning seasons since 1980, into one that was ranked seventh in the national AP Poll in 2006 and won five bowl games in six tries. Now that he’s back, the offense has seen the biggest boost in production. In just nine games, the 2020 Scarlet Knights scored more points than any previous version of the team since 2015. Senior Noah Vedral is slated to get the most reps at quarterback, after throwing for 1,253 yards and just nine touchdowns to eight interceptions in 2020. Junior running back Isaih Pacheco and senior receiver Bo Melton are the keys to the Rutgers offense. Pacheco ran for just over 500 yards and three touchdowns last season, but will get the bulk of the carries this coming season behind an improved offensive line. Melton meanwhile was the team’s leading receiver last year with 638 yards and six scores on 47 catches. The defense struggled last season, allowing 32 points per game last season. The Scarlet Knights have a real strength at the linebacker position though. 6-2, 240-pound senior Olakunle Fatukasi led the team with 101 tackles in 2020, while 245-pound senior Tyshon Fogg finished second with 65 tackles last year, and led the team with 96 in 2019.

Could Syracuse End Up Using Both Its QBs? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

On Sunday, Syracuse football was tabbed as a road underdog in its opener against the Mid-American Conference Ohio Bobcats, and it’s the latest prediction not to take Syracuse seriously.

Part of the doubt and uncertainty around the team’s progress stems from the quarterback position. Any Syracuse fan paying even slight attention to the team knows that with just 10 days before opening kickoff, head coach Dino Babers hasn’t committed to a starter under center. The most important position in football remains (at the moment) unsolved for the Orange.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean Babers will be forced to pick and stick with his returning starter in Tommy DeVito or the intriguing, unknown transfer in Garrett Shrader. Choosing one or the other to be set in stone may not be the way the creative, offensive-minded Dino Babers goes. We could very well see both used this season in different ways – and how things may go is anyone’s guess.

When talking about SU’s quarterbacks, things really only come down to Tommy DeVito and Garrett Shrader. They’re the two guys tabbed to actually play, whereas JaCobian Morgan likely won’t see the field barring serious injuries. DeVito and Shrader present vastly different skillsets, and that goes a long way in determining usage.

Unfortunately, there’s not a ton of precedent for this type of thing, at least in college football. In the NFL, the Dolphins just tried a two-quarterback system with rookie Tua Tagovailoa and veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2020 to mixed results.

Dino Babers noted that Tommy DeVito has the edge in the QB derby, but wants to see Garrett Shrader used in game action. Is the schedule going to impede the ability to see the QB battle play out? Also, the ACC formally announced its alliance with the Big Ten and PAC-12. How will the merger impact Syracuse? Also, we continue to count down SU's most important defensive backs. Today, the guys unveil #4 and #3 on their list: Ja'Had Carter and Jason Simmons. Tyler Aki and Tim Leonard discuss it all and more on the Wednesday edition of the Locked on Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse Football: Refuting report that calls non-conference slate weakest (itlh; Adler)

A recent report from CBS Sports says that Syracuse football has the weakest non-conference schedule within the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2021 season, and we’ve done a little homework to argue against this article’s position on the Orange.

Jerry Palm recently bylined the CBS Sports story that took a look at the toughest and weakest non-conference dockets across a variety of leagues.

For the ACC, the CBS Sports piece determined that Georgia Tech has the toughest non-conference slate, and the ‘Cuse has the weakest one.

In a separate recent article, CBS Sports provided a pre-season ranking of all 130 FBS teams. So we went ahead and assigned point values to every non-conference opponent of ACC teams in 2021, based on these rankings.

For FCS foes, we assigned a point value of 131. I acknowledge that this isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison, but I couldn’t find any comprehensive pre-season ratings of all FCS squads.

I also admit that we aren’t giving any sort of point value to home games versus away games. I’m just not sure how to do it in a way that would prove fair to all ACC groups.

So, yes, my research isn’t perfect. But I still think that it shows the Orange doesn’t have the weakest non-conference calendar among ACC teams.

Let’s have a look at the non-conference slates of Syracuse football and other ACC squads.

Based on the numbers which you’ll see further below, here are the rankings that I came up with as far as non-conference schedules go, with the toughest up top, and the weakest at the bottom.

You’ll see that the Orange is hovering somewhere in the middle of the ACC, but definitely not at the bottom.

Point Totals
Louisville, 216
Miami, 249
Georgia Tech, 267
Virginia, 267
Florida State, 283
North Carolina, 287
Virginia Tech, 293
Syracuse, 336
Clemson, 348
Wake Forest, 350
N.C. State, 381
Duke, 396
Pittsburgh, 418
Boston College, 420

Man. Last year was tough for Syracuse. Opt-outs and injuries everywhere, to the point they had to start a fullback on the offensive line.

Taking a look at the positives here, if healthy the offensive line actually isn’t bad. Chris Bleich should be an impact guy transferring in from Florida, and having to sit a year. Dakota Davis is an absolute mauler at left guard, Airon Servais is a solid guy at right tackle and Matthew Bergeron is a P5 starting left tackle. Some people in the ACC can’t say that about their own teams right now. Sean Tucker is a running back the entire ACC is going to have to worry about and will be a problem if the OL holds up. Taj Harris is a household name at receiver for them and is a dynamic guy, while when he has time and isn’t dealing with a season-ending leg injury, QB Tommy Devito can play. I’m also a bit curious to what, if any, role Mississippi State transfer QB Garrett Shrader plays this season. A true dual-threat guy who can offer some different looks. I’d be an idiot to not mention how good the linebacker room looks with Mikel Jones, Marlowe Wac, and Stefon Thompson, plus a budding star at corner in Garrett Williams.

The SEC must be laughing at this ACC, Pac-12, Big Ten alliance of platitudes | Toppmeyer (tennessean.com; Toppmeyer)

Two pieces of college football news were announced Tuesday.

The ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 unveiled their formation of a three-conference alliance. And the SEC announced its preseason coaches All-SEC team.

It’s debatable which one was more noteworthy.

You might think an alliance featuring three Power 5 conferences sounds impressive on paper. The trouble is, the alliance isn’t actually on paper. There is no contract binding this alliance.

It’s a gentleman’s agreement. An exchange of friendship bracelets. A vow to support each other.

How, exactly? Well, that remains unclear.

I’m imagining SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey leaning back in his recliner, grinning and perhaps enjoying a victory cigar as he watched Tuesday’s joint news conference featuring the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 commissioners describing a pact that is long on platitudes and short on substance.

This was the much-anticipated rebuttal in response to the SEC’s July plundering of Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12?

ACC football: Predicting every team’s win-loss record this season (fansided.com; Melton)

Predicting the win-loss record for every ACC football team for the 2021 season. Will Clemson sit atop the conference once again this season, or will teams such as North Carolina and Miami present a challenge for the Tigers?

The ACC received a fresh look at the top of the conference a year ago with Notre Dame finishing regular-season play sitting atop the league at 9-0 after joining for the 2020 season. However, the Fighting Irish fell to Clemson in the ACC Championship game, a familiar sight in recent years for ACC opponents.

The Tigers have dominated the conference for six consecutive seasons now, but there may be some increased competition as we enter the 2021 campaign.

With Notre Dame back to being an FBS independent in 2021, will Clemson finish the regular season undefeated once again? Are North Carolina and Miami ACC title contenders? Is Florida State back? Who is this seasons sleeper team in the ACC?

Each of these questions will be answered in due-time on the field, but also by predicting each ACC football team’s 2021 win-loss record in the regular-season.

ACC football record predictions for every team

Boston College football record prediction: 7-5

You could make an argument that the Eagles are the preseason No. 2 or No. 3 team in the Atlantic division, but face a road ahead that includes trips to Clemson and Georgia Tech, as well as home matchups against Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Missouri from the SEC.

Clemson football record prediction: 13-0

Aside from their marquee Week 1 showdown with No. 5 Georgia in Charlotte, the Tigers should cruise through the conference to their seventh consecutive ACC Championship, as well as the College Football Playoff.

Duke football record prediction: 4-8

The Blue Devils will have to travel to North Carolina and Virginia Tech most-notably, but have plenty of opportunities to collect quality wins at home as Miami, Northwestern, and Pittsburgh will all visit Durham this season.

Florida State football record prediction: 8-4

The Seminoles haven’t had a winning season since 2017, but the opportunity is there for Florida State to be the sleeper team in the ACC in year two under Mike Norvell with a tough schedule headlined by trips to Clemson, North Carolina, and Florida, as well as home games against Notre Dame and Miami.

Georgia Tech football record prediction: 5-7

After back-to-back three win seasons, the Yellow Jackets face a tough 2021 schedule that includes trips to Clemson, Miami, and Notre Dame, as well as home matchups against North Carolina and SEC-rival Georgia.

Louisville football record prediction: 6-6

Entering year three under head coach Scott Satterfield, Louisville could have success within the ACC, but three non-conference games may be the ultimate decider in 2021 – Ole Miss, UCF, and Kentucky.

Miami football record prediction: 9-3

The Hurricanes face defending national champion Alabama in Week 1, but aside from that and a mid-October trip to North Carolina, the schedule favors Miami to be in contention to win the Coastal division.

NC State football record prediction: 7-5

The Wolfpack host both Clemson and North Carolina this season, but face three road games in particular that could decide how far NC State goes in 2021 – Mississippi State, Miami, and Florida State.

North Carolina football record prediction: 10-3

The preseason favorite to win the Coastal division and meet Clemson in the ACC Championship game, the Tar Heels will meet Miami in Chapel Hill on October 16 in a game that may decide the division, along with an important road game two weeks later at Notre Dame.

Pittsburgh football record prediction: 6-6

The Panthers schedule ramps up beginning in October with their ACC opener at Georgia Tech, and Pitt has a chance to enter that game undefeated at 4-0, depending on what occurs with their Week 2 trip to Knoxville to face Tennessee.

Syracuse football record prediction: 4-8

After finishing last in the ACC a year ago, the Orange should be improved, but not enough to contend in the Atlantic division this season.

Virginia football record prediction: 6-6

The Cavaliers may struggle in ACC play, but have two non-conference matchups against Notre Dame and BYU that will be a tough test as well.

Virginia Tech football record prediction: 7-5

Arguably the Hokies biggest game of the season comes via a Week 1 showdown with North Carolina at home, but a mid-season home game against Notre Dame, as well as a late-season trip to Miami could be very important games.

Wake Forest football record prediction: 4-8

Alliance Games We'd Like to See (RX; HM)

Alliance Games We'd Like to See

If the goal is more marquee ACC-B1G and ACC-Pac-12 match-ups, which games would we like to see? Let's take a look at key Big Ten and Pac-12 schools and see which ACC programs might want to play them...

ACC vs Big Ten (Football)

Maryland
Virginia was the ACC crossover rival for the Terps, but Duke, North Carolina, NC State, and Clemson also have football history with Maryland.
Rutgers
There's not a lot of call for games against the Scarlet Knights (even within the Big Ten!), although just for the regional rivalry and recruiting benefit the ACC would probably send Boston College and Syracuse.
Penn State
Pitt is probably the most obvious lost rivalry, although there's also benefit to scheduling Boston College, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and NC State against Penn State. You could also get some nice made-for-tv matchups with Clemson and Miami here, not to mention Notre Dame (if they are interested).
Ohio State
Clemson hasn't played the Buckeyes home or away, but the Tigers have had some great games with them nonetheless thanks to the College Football Playoffs. Miami also has some championship history with Ohio State, and Virginia Tech is 1-0 in the Horseshoe!
Michigan
We know who the Wolverines want - Notre Dame - but will the Irish agree to play them? Among full football members of the ACC I'd recommend Florida State, which has had some good games with Michigan in the past.

Weird 2021 Season Factoids from FBSchedules (RX; HM)

Weird 2021 Season Factoids from FBSchedules

From "21 amazing facts about the 2021 college football schedule" posted on FBSchedules.com...

...here’s a look at some of the wacky and wild [ACC-related] caveats of the larger 2021 schedule.
1. BOSTON COLLEGE plays two roadies at Group of 5 schools
Though a handful of Power 5 members will visit a Group of 5 venue in 2021 (including No. 2 Oklahoma’s Week 1 game at Tulane), Boston College is the only such program that will double down. After opening with a home date vs. FCS Colgate, the Eagles will play at UMass on Saturday, Sept. 11 and then travel to Temple the following Saturday. The upside is the first of the two trips will be short (and hopefully sweet) – the Minutemen’s McGuirk Alumni Stadium is only 88 miles away in Amherst, Mass.
5. APPALACHIAN STATE [and] GEORGIA STATE... are playing THREE ranked opponents
Of the 59 Group of 5 members coming into 2021, four – all Sun Belt programs – are scheduled to play three members of the preseason AP Top 25. That’s the most of any G5 program.
Appalachian State: at #14 Miami (FL), at #23 Louisiana, vs. #22 Coastal Carolina
Georgia State: at #10 North Carolina, at #23 Louisiana, at #22 Coastal Carolina
6. KANSAS is on an 0-72 run vs. its 2021 schedule
The Jayhawks are the only team in the nation to be on the wrong end of a losing streak against each and every one of its FBS opponents this season. [including the last time they faced Duke].
7. #1 ALABAMA is on a 70-0 run vs. its 2021 schedule
The antithesis of Kansas, (1) Alabama is one of only three FBS teams currently enjoying a winning streak against each of its FBS opponents in 2021... a nation-leading 70 straight [including the last time they faced #14 Miami].
12. UCONN will play a third of its schedule against first-ever opponents
Despite fielding a football team for 125 years, UConn will play four FBS programs this season that it’s never met before... [including a visit to] mighty #3 Clemson in Week 11...

NYS Fair bringing back strawberry milk to Milk Bar for a limited time (PS; $ Herbert)

The Great New York State Fair is bringing back strawberry milk to its popular Milk Bar.

NYS Fair officials announced the new flavor will be offered for a limited time over the Fair’s second and third weekends. Strawberry and chocolate milk will be available in the Dairy Building on Friday, Aug. 27 through Sunday, Aug. 29, while strawberry and white milk will be available Friday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 6.

Only two flavors can be sold each day because the refrigerated holding tanks have just two pipelines to the milk dispensers. White and chocolate milk will both continue to be available Aug. 25-26 and Aug. 30-Sept. 2; all milk cups are 25 cents each.

“Nothing beats a cold cup of milk when the Fair heats up. A family of four can hand over just $1 and walk away with four delicious drinks,” said Fair Director Troy Waffner. “Fairgoers line up year after year, so we’re very excited to see how they’ll react when strawberry milk becomes an option again.”

Strawberry milk was previously available at the Fair years ago, but Milk Bar operator Wahid Akl said they decided to bring it back because of the overwhelming popularity of chocolate milk. According to a press release, the Milk Bar will sell 120 gallons per hour of chocolate milk on a normal busy day.

“This is a big change and we’re ready for it. On one hand, this will remind some visitors of their childhoods and the past, but this could also be a defining moment for the future,” Akl said. “If a different flavor does well, I may look into offering more options. We could try mocha, mint, and maybe cookies-n-cream milk. First, we need to find out if strawberry is popular.”
