Save-the-Koala-Day.jpg
Welcome to Save the Koala Day!

The aim of Save the Koala Day is to raise awareness of the plight of the koala and to educate people.
The Australian Koala Foundation raises money with sales of stickers, special Koala Day
gifts,items and donations.

The money contributes to the long term survival of Australia's wild koalas and
their habitat. Koalas in the wild face problems as their habitat is cleared.

With housing getting closer, there is also the risk of dog attacks and road
accidents.80% of koala habitat is on private land and the public needs to be
educated on how to help to keep the koala habitat alive and safe.Simple
measures like planting new and maintaining existing trees that koalas like
to feed on and keeping dogs secure at night go a long way to help.

Despite there being large populations of koalas in some areas, other areas are
very fragile due to the degradation of the habitat. Public education is
necessary and the Australian Koala Foundation has done a lot to enable this
including implementing the Save the Koala Day.

Syracuse enters the 2021 season following back to back losing campaigns. After a 10 win 2018 season, the Orange has gone 5-7 and 1-10 in the last two years. Getting back to a bowl game would be significant for the program's direction. A season opening win over Ohio was a step in the right direction. However, Syracuse missed a chance to start the year 2-0 with a loss to Rutgers in the home opener but bounced back with a 62-24 win over Albany.

Liberty has started the season 3-0. The Flames opened the season with a 48-7 win over FCS Campbell. The next week, in Liberty's lone road game to date, the Flames topped Troy 21-13. Last week, Liberty beat Old Dominion 45-17. The Flames are led by quarterback Malik Willis. Through three games, Willis is completing 71% of his passes, has thrown for 613 yards with seven touchdowns, no interceptions and rushed for 225 yards with four more scores.

Syracuse football-Liberty prediction; make your pick (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football returns to action on Friday at 8 p.m. when Liberty comes to the Carrier Dome. The Orange will be looking to avenge a 38-21 loss from last season, but enters the grudge match of a three-game series pegged as a near-touchdown underdog.

While the Orange (2-1) has picked up a pair of convincing victories over Ohio and FCS Albany, LU has cruised to its undefeated start with only one result -- a 21-13 win at Troy -- finishing closer than four touchdowns. SU's only slip-up through the first quarter of its season was a 17-7 loss to Rutgers in Week 2.

Liberty's rocketing start comes behind the arm and legs of former Auburn quarterback Malik Willis. He leads the team in rushing with 225 yards on 34 totes to go along with a 71 percent completion rate, tallying 613 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception. Willis presents the toughest individual test yet for an Orange defense in Year 2 of running Tony White's 3-3-5 scheme.

"He's a quarterback who can throw the football," Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said on Monday. "He throws a good deep ball, he throws a good short ball, but he runs so strong. I'm not going to call him a running back because he's not, but God, he does not run like a running quarterback. He's better than that. He's very physical."

The quarterback situation on the Orange's side of the contest is cloudier. Babers said that he's still evaluating returning starter Tommy DeVito and Mississippi State transfer Garrett Shrader. However, the former has started each game thus far and remains listed as the first-team signal-caller on SU's depth chart.

"When it comes to the situation with the quarterbacks, we're still in the evaluation going on with them," Babers said as part of his opening statement. "I'm not going to be announcing anything right here because it would be a tactical advantage for our opponent. But in the order of they will know first, the team will know second, the media will know third. Hopefully, it's that order."

Here's how we see the game playing out:

Ask a beat writer: Five questions (plus one) about Syracuse (newsadvance.com; Sordellett)

Liberty recorded its first victory over an ACC opponent with a 38-21 triumph over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome last season. The teams meet again for the second straight season in the Carrier Dome. The final of the three-game series means a familiar staple returns with the weekly Q&A with an opposing beat writer to help preview the Flames’ matchup. Stephen Bailey covers Syracuse football, men’s basketball and recruiting for 247Sports Cuse Nation, and he stops by to answer five questions (plus one) about Syracuse. For his coverage of the Orange, follow him on Twitter:

@Stephen_Bailey1.

Now onto the Q&A:

N&A: Syracuse appears to be off to a much better start this season compared to last. Granted, playing a true nonconference schedule probably doesn’t hurt. What has been your assessment so far of the Orange through three games?

SB:
Syracuse has roughly met external expectations through three games. The Orange ran all over an athletically inferior Ohio defense before the team’s already limited offense faceplanted against its first Power Five opponent in Rutgers. There’s no need to put stock into what happened against Albany.

The SU defense has clearly taken a step forward in Year 2 of the 3-3-5 under Tony White. SU’s veteran defensive linemen know what they’re doing and are, in turn, able to use the size and experience they’ve accrued. A young corps of linebackers is athletic enough to disrupt the backfield and hold its own in terms of lateral quickness. And a secondary that had to replace three NFL players seems to have plugged the gaps OK, though that unit has gotten away with a couple of failures in coverage as well.

Offensively, this game should serve as a good litmus test for whether Syracuse can actually run the ball. A revamped offensive line looked shaky against Rutgers, though it got its top interior linemen in Dakota Davis back last weekend. If that unit can pave the way for Sean Tucker, Tommy DeVito should have time to provide a balanced offensive effort.

N&A: Sean Tucker was one of three players to rush for more than 100 yards against Liberty last season, and the Liberty coaching staff raved about him earlier this week. How vital is he to Syracuse’s success on that side of the ball?

SB:
He’s the team’s best running back by a significant margin — and that’s no knock on the rest of the room. Breakaway speed aside, Tucker is the complete package with the ball in his hands. His vision, instincts and ability to fall forward are unparalleled in terms of backs I’ve covered over the last decade. The returning freshman is looking stronger than ever this year, too.

Pass protection has, at times, been a concern — as has been the case for the offensive line and a thinned-down tight end room. But that’s expected for a young back.

N&A: Syracuse was playing without two of its best players in the secondary in last season’s matchup with Andre Cisco and Ifeatu Melifonwu both out. Neither are back this season, but the back end of the defense is playing at a fairly high level. What has changed?

SB:
Two key additions have bolstered the top end of last year’s struggling secondary. Freshman early enrollee Duce Chestnut won a starting corner job and has been extremely impressive through a quarter of the season. His physicality has helped him more than hold his own in run support while challenging receivers at the line of scrimmage. New Mexico State transfer Jason Simmons won the starting field safety job at the very end of fall camp. He’s most often defending the opposing slot receiver and has all the mobility skills to keep up with wideouts coming out of their breaks. For both of those guys, communication and understanding how SU handles its zone coverages are the biggest keys.

Garrett Williams, the team’s other starting corner, and boundary safety Ja’Had Carter are ACC-proven performers while the Rover spot is currently held down by returning freshman Rob Hanna. Hanna has had issues in run support again this year so don’t be surprised if converted wide receiver Justin Barron gets significant snaps against LU.

Previewing Orange football Week 4 against Liberty (thenewshouse.com; Turner)

After a win against the Albany Great Danes last week, Syracuse football is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Orange will face off against the Liberty Flames Friday night at the Dome in what could be their toughest game yet.

That is because of the Flames’ offense and quarterback Malik Willis. Willis, a 2021 Heisman contender, transferred to Liberty from Auburn in 2019.

In Liberty’s last game, a 45-17 win over Old Dominion, he tallied six total touchdowns and 319 all-purpose yards.

“We just gotta keep him in the pocket. He’s a really talented player obviously, he has a super strong arm,” Syracuse cornerback Garrett Williams said of Willis. “Just keep him in the pocket because he’s most dangerous when he’s running around.”

The Orange will focus on containing Willis and Liberty’s offense to make up for their performance in last year’s matchup, where the Orange lost to the Flames 38-21.

“They had a lot of rushing yards, and on our defense, that’s one of our biggest goals; to stop the run,” Syracuse linebacker Mikel Jones said. “We didn’t do that well that game, that’s partly my fault last year, so plan on fixing that this year.”

Looking to avenge last year’s loss to Liberty, Syracuse plans to come back and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with. Jones said the team did not like how last year’s game went down.

“Every game we focus on going 1-0, always keep trying to do the good things so we can get the dub out of the week,” Syracuse linebacker Marlowe Wax said. “We’re going to focus on staying together as a team and just focus on getting the win.”

The Orange will face the Flames on Friday night at 8 p.m. in the Dome. The game will be broadcast live on the ACC Network and will be streamed on FuboTV.

Syracuse Football: Cody Roscoe is a riveting quarterback hunter (itlh; Fiello)

In a season where many, including myself, have hyped up names like Josh Black, McKinley Williams and Kingsley Jonathan, Syracuse football defensive lineman Cody Roscoe has emerged as another name worthy of putting some respect on his name.

This past weekend against Albany, the Syracuse football defense had NINE quarterback sacks, and three of those belonged solely to Cody Roscoe, his career-high. For those who do not know, Cody transferred to the Orange last season from McNeese State and actually was third on the team with 6 tackles for losses. Unfortunately, we only get him for last season and this season but he is quickly making the most of his time at Syracuse and many people are taking notice.

If you want to learn more about Cody Roscoe, you can check him out in this YouTube interview with Brian Higgins before the Albany game. Or I can gladly inform you that Cody and his fellow linemen are doing a great job getting tackles and getting into the backfield to bring the pressure.

Syracuse football defensive lineman Cody Roscoe is a talented and underrated player.

I know many fans and media will be looking mostly at stats and turnovers as solid proof of production but I think underestimating their ability to contain the teams they’ve played is very important as well. Even with the Rutgers loss, there was a lot of physical play from the front line and pressure on the offense for most of the game, including from Cody.

If there is a player on defense that I am not constantly looking to see how well he produces, Cody Roscoe is towards the top of the list now. The defense as a unit has been very impressive this season so far and playing with a high intensity that will keep the Orange in any game. I would not be shocked one bit to see Cody or others get some awards as the season plays out, and I believe those looking for turnovers and stats will not have to look hard to find them.

RE: CFP Expansion Vote Delay (RX; HM)

RE: CFP Expansion Vote Delay

No doubt you've read the headlines - there won't be a vote on expanding the College Football Playoff next week. The board was originally scheduled to meet with the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick on Sept. 28 in Rosemont, IL to vote on the subcommittee's recommended 12-team playoff format. There will still be a meeting next week, but (a) it will be conducted over Zoom, rather than in person, and (b) a vote on expansion will not be on the agenda.

Why was CFP expansion delayed? Will it still happen, and if so, in what form? Can you believe everything you read on the internet?

I'll answer that last one first: no, you cannot.

Now, as for why CFP expansion was delayed, the short answer is because the other conferences don't trust the SEC and its media partner, ESPN, to play fair. The long answer is... longer. In fact, there are several legitimate concerns about the 12-team proposal put forth by the CFP expansion subcommittee (which included SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick) that have nothing to do with the SEC, Notre Dame, or trust...

BOZICH | ACC football down season creates opening for Louisville (wdrb.com; Bozich)

After playing four conference games during the first three weeks this season, the Atlantic Coast Conference will crank the volume on league play this weekend with four more ACC games.

That, of course, includes Louisville. The Cards (2-1) will play the first of eight consecutive ACC games when they visit Florida State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Louisville is favored by two points and in position to bury the memories from the Ole Miss game.

Put this in bold type:

According to the Sagarin ratings, Louisville’s victory over Central Florida (No. 34) is the best non-conference win delivered by any ACC program this season. That helps to explain why another power formula web site, WarrenNolan.com, projects that Louisville will finish third in the ACC Atlantic Division. Nolan’s formula puts the Cardinals at 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the ACC Atlantic, behind Clemson and Boston College.

Prior to the season, in a vote at ACC media day, the Cards were picked sixth, ahead of only Syracuse.

If you’re Scott Satterfield, you take 8-5, 5-3 and head directly to the clubhouse.

Teel: Can ACC teams repair league's football image after grim start to 2021? (richmond.com; Teel)

The ACC’s football season wasn’t toast when the league, collectively, belly-flopped in Week 1.
Any hopes of the conference’s champion earning a playoff bid weren’t dashed by similarly grim results in Weeks 2 and 3.
Clemson still could unearth a competent offense. North Carolina might replicate last Saturday’s point-a-minute buzzsaw in larger moments. Wake Forest, Virginia, Pitt, N.C. State, Virginia Tech or Boston College could author lengthy winning streaks.

The ACC’s lone unbeatens at 3-0, Wake and BC are underappreciated, the latter in part due to a hand injury that has sidelined quarterback Phil Jurkovec indefinitely. But after the regular season’s opening quarter, there’s no questioning the ACC’s place on the 2021 Power Five food chain: the bottom.

Consider each league’s record in nonconference games against Power Five peers, Notre Dame included.
The Big Ten is 8-5, the SEC 6-4. The Big 12 is 4-3, with the Pac-12 and ACC lagging behind at 3-6 and 3-8, respectively.

Worse for the ACC, the most notable of its Power Five conquests is Pitt winning at Tennessee, a team few expect to challenge in the SEC East, and a result the Panthers followed with a baffling home loss to Western Michigan.

Conversely, the SEC can boast of Georgia grinding past Clemson, Arkansas routing Texas, and Alabama waxing Miami. The Big Ten has Penn State surviving Auburn, Iowa beating Iowa State, and Maryland besting West Virginia.

Among the Big 12, West Virginia defeated Virginia Tech, and Kansas State rolled Stanford. Oregon gave the Pac-12 a signature win with a road upset of Ohio State.

There are opportunities for ACC teams to at least partially repair the league’s image, including four additional games versus No. 12 Notre Dame — the Fighting Irish play at Virginia Tech and Virginia, and host North Carolina and Georgia Tech. Florida State closes with No. 11 Florida, while Georgia Tech finishes against No. 2 Georgia. UVA travels to No. 15 Brigham Young next month.

Mr. Shop in downtown Syracuse's Armory Square is opening a second location at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona.Kevin Tampone | ktampone@syracuse.com

Mr. Shop, cornerstone of Syracuse retail, to open 2nd store (PS; Tampone)

Mr. Shop, a menswear store that has been a cornerstone of the retail scene in Syracuse’s Armory Square for decades, is opening a new location in October at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona.

The new, 1,600-square-foot store opens Oct. 1.

“I know already that the clientele for the Mr. Shop already exists out there,” Mr. Shop owner Joel Shapiro said. “This is an opportunity I just had to go with.”6

Shapiro isn’t new to Turning Stone. He opened a suite of four stores at the resort in 2018 in an area known as The Commons. Two focus on womenswear, one carries jewelry and accessories and the fourth has sports merchandise and Turning Stone-branded goods.

The partnership with Turning Stone has been a successful one, Shapiro said. It made the resort a perfect spot for a second Mr. Shop.
...
He said he had been looking for a second location for about year.

“We’ve had such great experience,” Shapiro said. “We have four stores at the resort and each one of them has been doing exceptionally well. The guests at Turning Stone truly love the service and the product that we are putting forth.”

The new Mr. Shop will be located around the corner from Shapiro’s other stores at Turning Stone.

It will be near a new area known as The Parlor, which will cater to the resort’s high rollers. Mr. Shop specializes in high-end merchandise, so it’s good fit, Shapiro said.

The new store will offer a few things the original Armory Square location does not, Shapiro added.

Tuxedo and suit rentals will be available since Turning Stone regularly hosts weddings, charity events and other parties. The new store will also carry watches and sunglasses.
