Welcome to National Drink Beer Day!

Today is for drinking beer! Beer making can be traced to about 6,000 years ago in ancient Sumeria. At that time, beer was cloudy because of lack of filtering, and it was drunk through a straw. By 2000 BCE, the Babylonians were brewing 20 types of beer. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans made beer, although wine became much more popular with the Romans—they considered beer to be the drink of the Barbarians and it was only popular on the edges of the Empire. Germanic groups were brewing beer by 800 BCE.

Because of contamination, beer was a much safer drink than water during the Middle Ages; it was drunk by people of all ages from all classes. The Catholic Church even got involved with brewing beer, and abbeys were testing grounds for improvements in brewing. Beginning in the ninth century, in Germany, hops began being introduced, standards were set up for beer, and beer began being mass-brewed. The 1516 Beer Purity Law—Reinheitsgebot—said a certain level of quality must be met for German beer. All beer could only be made with water, hops, malted barley, malted wheat, and yeast.

Syracuse Orange running back Sean Tucker (34) on a touchdown run as Syracuse takes on Albany at the Carrier Dome Sept. 18, 2021. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

Tucker enjoying the best start to a season by a SU running back in nearly 20 years (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse’s Sean Tucker is enjoying the best start to a season by an Orange running back in nearly two decades.

Through Syracuse’s first four games, Tucker is the team’s leading rusher and receiver. He has 536 yards rushing through four games, a total that ranks him second in the country behind Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker III. He’s added on 175 receiving yards, which also ranks him second in the country behind Michigan’s Blake Corum in all-purpose yards.

At a program largely known for its running back tradition, Tucker became the first to accumulate 100 yards rushing and receiving in a single game, accomplishing the feat against Albany.

His performances are already generating some minor Heisman Trophy conversation from select corners and have reenergized the conversation about whether it’s time that Syracuse returns the No. 44 onto the field.

In terms of Syracuse history, Tucker’s start is, numerically, the best for the Orange since Walter Reyes in 2003, a year in which Reyes set the school’s single-season record for touchdowns and delivered the second-most rushing yards in a single season in program history.

Reyes remarkably rushed for 681 yards over the first four games that season, setting the stage with 191 yards in a season-opening, triple-overtime win over North Carolina. He followed that with 87 yards against Louisville, 241 yards against Central Florida and 162 yards in a win over Toledo.

He finished the year with 1,347 rushing yards and 1,732 all-purpose yards, with the Orange going 6-6.

Stop the Battle: Garrett Shrader Needs to Start For Syracuse – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; May)

Who doesn’t love a good quarterback battle? They are always so fun to track, pick sides, and eventually see who wins. However, QB battles mid-season are not so fun. For the first three games of the Syracuse football season, Tommy DeVito held onto the title of QB1. Against Liberty, though, DeVito didn’t play a snap. It was Garrrett Shrader who orchestrated the offense.

Is this a sign that Dino Babers and Syracuse have finally found their definite starting quarterback? Or did they just go with Shrader because he is a better runner and Liberty’s rush defense was atrocious? Let’s hope its the former.

Here’s the skinny – DeVito is a serviceable quarterback that has shone flashes of greatness, but can never sustain it. He makes quite a bit of mistakes too. Although he may be Babers’ “golden child” by being his first big recruit at SU, DeVito’s days as the starter should be over.

Shrader needs to be Syracuse’s starting quarterback because of his legs. Plain and simple. Through four games, it’s pretty clear that the Orange are a run-first offense. That is their identity. So, lean into it by going with the dual-threat quarterback.

Sure, opposing defenses will know Syracuse is going to run the ball 40-plus times a game and pack the box, but who cares. Shrader’s ability to run paired with Sean Tucker being Sean Tucker is a dangerous combo that not many teams want to see. DeVito can run sometimes, but he’s not close to having Shrader’s abilities. Defenses need to seriously respect the Mississippi State transfer’s legs, which then opens up more opportunities for Tucker.

Liberty's efficient tight red zone play falters in fourth quarter in loss at Syracuse (newsadvance.com; Sordelett)

Liberty football coach Hugh Freeze immediately wanted to watch the film and see what exactly unfolded that prevented the Flames from scoring on any of four plays inside the Syracuse 5-yard line midway through the fourth quarter Friday night. Something didn’t sit well with him, especially after his team had been perfect in those situations to open the season and scored at an efficient rate since he took over in 2019.
The analytics suggested Freeze go for the touchdown if the Flames were unable to convert on the first three tries, and on fourth down, he called what has been a successful play since Malik Willis took over at quarterback — a speed option to the boundary where Willis can either run it in himself or pitch it to the tailback.

It didn’t work and left the door open for Syracuse to regain momentum.
The Orange did in a dramatic 24-21 victory capped by Andre Symzt’s 35-yard field goal as time expired inside the Carrier Dome.
“We plan pretty hard on those and we work hard and our players typically execute fairly well there,” Freeze said Monday. “We have been pretty successful and I guess why it’s so disappointing that we didn’t get it in there and give ourselves a chance to win the game.”

Liberty (3-1) entered that pivotal sequence tied with Syracuse at 21 with a little more than eight minutes remaining. The Flames had scored on two consecutive drives to rally from a 14-point deficit, and they were on the doorstep of taking their first lead of the game.

Liberty scored on its lone previous trip inside the 10-yard line — a Shedro Louis 7-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter — to improve to 8 for 8 in those situations this season.

The Flames, under Freeze, had scored either a touchdown or field goal on 67 of 80 trips inside the red zone since the beginning of the 2019 season.

All eight trips in 2021 through the first half Friday night resulted in touchdowns.
Liberty’s first chance from the Syracuse 4 appeared to net a touchdown on Willis’ completion to DeMario Douglas in the right-front corner of the end zone. However, Douglas was sliding on the reception and his feet and legs were out of bounds when he gained control of the ball.

It is a play Liberty has run successfully in the past with Willis rolling to his right and finding a receiver open near the corner of the end zone.
“Instead of a fade pylon, he ran a fade out, and that’s why he was out of bounds,” Freeze explained about the play. “Me and [receivers coach Maurice] Harris have to coach him better on that route. … I felt like we should have scored there.”

Liberty had three more downs to score. T.J. Green was stuffed for a 1-yard gain on second down, and Willis was stopped on a 1-yard gain on third down.

Freeze said Syracuse “did a good job” on second down, then explained one blocker on third down thought the call was a stretch play to the left, when it was being run to the right, and that allowed Mikel Jones to be free for the tackle.

“Again, I’ve got to coach them better,” Freeze said. “I don’t know how that got confused.”

FSU football Saturday: FSU vs. Syracuse odds and prediction for Week 5 NCAA game (chopchat.com; Hunt)

FSU Game Saturday: FSU vs. Syracuse odds and prediction for NCAA Week 5 game

FSU football will enter week four of the 2021 season with an 0-4 record for the first time since before most of us were born. They will be hosting Syracuse (3-1), who comes to Tallahassee after defeating Liberty on a last second field goal last week.

The Noles didn’t face Syracuse in 2020, but the Orange were one of the teams a lackluster FSU team dominated in 2019.

The Noles come into the game off an encouraging second half performance against Louisville, which saw them come up short on their final possession in hopes of tying the game to force overtime..

Syracuse is 3-1 but lost to the only Power 5 team they have played this year (Rutgers 17-7).

FSU vs. Syracuse Week 5

The Week 5 betting odds on WynnBET have the Noles as -4.5-point betting favorites at home. The money line odds are not available at this time, but the total for the game is set at an over/under of 52 points, which implies a 28-24 type of game in favor of the Noles.

FSU vs. Syracuse Prediction Week 5

If I were a betting man, I’d feel encouraged by the second half against Louisville, but I’m still in wait-and-see mode before I’d ever lay real money on them to cover the spread. They don’t have strong quarterback play, and the defensive secondary can be a liability. I do expect FSU to win this game unless they turn the ball over multiple times. They did a solid job of not turning the ball over until their final possession against Louisville. Syracuse doesn’t have much firepower offensively considering the competition they’ve faced thus far. Maybe this is finally the week the Noles get over the hump?

Winless Florida State opens as a favorite against visiting Syracuse, even though they're 3-1 (tallahassee.com; Henry)

Syracuse sports the better record, but oddsmakers like winless Florida State.

The Seminoles (0-4) opened as a 4.5-favorite against the Orange (3-1) in Saturday’s ACC game at Doak Campbell Stadium, according to VegasInsider.com.

Syracuse has been an underdog in three of its four games this season, winning two of the three.

FSU is coming off a 31-23 home defeat to Louisville Saturday, while Syracuse beat visiting Liberty 24-21 on Andre Szmyt’s game-winning 25-yard field goal with no time on the clock last Friday.

Syracuse's rushing game is tough

The Seminoles’ defense will need to slow the Orange’s running game if FSU wants to snap its losing streak – the program last opened 0-4 in 1974.

Syracuse is averaging 216 rushing yards per game to rank third in the ACC.

Freshman running back Sean Tucker leads the conference with 536 yards and ranks second the country in rushing yards per game (134). He has 100-yard rushing totals in three of four games this season, punctuated by 169 yards against Liberty.

FSU ranks seventh in the ACC in rushing yards allowed per game at 132.3

The Seminoles may also have to prepare to face a pair of Orange quarterbacks.

In a surprise move against Liberty, Syracuse coach Dino Baber started Garrett Shrader, a transfer from Mississippi State, in place of veteran Tommy DeVito.

Shrader only completed 6 of 15 passes, but he ran the ball 15 times and scored two touchdowns.

DeVito had started each of SU's first three games this season.

The Orange’s three wins have come against Ohio (29-9), Albany (62-24) and Liberty. Syracuse lost to Rutgers (17-7) in its second game. Saturday marks its ACC opener.

WATCH: Florida State coaches speak at Monday presser (tomahawknation.com; Mire)

Florida State coaches Mike Norvell, Kenny Dillingham, Adam Fuller, and John Papuchis spoke to the media today after an upsetting 31-23 loss this past Saturday to the Louisville Cardinals. The Seminoles look ahead to another ACC match-up this weekend at home against the Syracuse Orange this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. They spoke on defense, injuries, the running back room, special teams, and more.

“In the locker room yesterday, everyone is disappointed, it hurts and it's painful to be where we are right now but we come in as a coaching staff, as players, we see the film and the results of our actions and what we do. They’re all things that need to be fixed and can be fixed.”

The FSU defense struggled in the first half giving up 316 total yards and 31 points to the Cardinals but did not allow Louisville in the end zone for the rest of the game.

“I thought defensively in the second half, they played lights out.”

“I thought guys were playing with great energy and it showed up all over the field. Going back and watching the film, in each game I've seen that level of play in our defense.”

Here is what Head coach Mike Norvell also had to say about the impact this season has had on recruiting:

Monday Morning H0T Takes: Virginia (bloggersodear.com; Bridgers)

The Deacs are 4-0! We are officially a third of the way through the 2021 football season, and Wake Forest is looking like a pretty darn good team. In fact, the Deacs are still in sole possession of first place in the conference and are one of the the two remaining unbeaten teams in the ACC (BC). As always, let’s drop a few H0T Takes from Friday night’s game and the rest of the college football slate. Please keep in mind that these are just the opinions of a fan who doesn’t really know that much about the sport of football and likes to complain.

The path is there. Don’t freak out. With Clemson losing to NC State this weekend, the path for Wake Forest to get to the ACC Championship game is right there. Maybe it’s starting to feel like 2006.

The defense could be better than the offense. This sounds crazy, I know. The Wake Forest offense has looked unstoppable this season, averaging 430 yards and almost 39 points per game—and that’s really without trying in the 4th quarter. But check out what the defense has done through the first four games of the season. The Deacs have only given up 57 points so far! That’s under 15 points a game. Combine that with 11 forced turnovers, 15 sacks, and a 39% conversion rate on third downs, and the defense has a case here. Hopefully this is a debate that we can continue having as the season progresses.

Brennan Armstrong is the best QB in the nation. This guy is insane. He has an absolute cannon for an arm and is tough as nails. He’s being asked to basically be the entire Virginia offense, and he’s doing a pretty good job of it. With 59 passing attempts and 17 rushing attempts, Armstrong combined to account for 76 of UVA’s 86 plays and 440 of their 506 total yards—that is a ridiculous usage rate and probably is not sustainable for the entire season. Several times during the game it looked like Wake had Armstrong dead to rights for a sack, and he would somehow emerge from a pile, escape the pocket, and throw an absolute laser down the field for 30 yards. With the current struggles of the big names like Sam Howell and Spencer Rattler, Armstrong is easily my vote for the top QB in the nation.

Trick plays are fun. This isn’t really a hot take at all. Let’s just do more trick plays.

I kind of like being unranked. Wake Forest is currently 24th in the AP Top 25 poll and deservedly so. That being said, I sort of like being an under the radar team that people tend to overlook. I’m pretty sure this has absolutely no effect on the opponent’s preparation or the outcome of the game at all, but as a completely irrational fan, being ranked to me is just a big ole target right on the back. Plus, it’s always fun when all the “expects” pick against the Deacs and they absolutely steamroll their opponent.

UNC has the best PR in college football. I don’t know who was behind the hype train but this was clearly never a playoff team. One loss at the beginning of the year can be overlooked, but losing to Georgia Tech by 23 as a 14.5 favorite is pretty bad. Yikes. I don’t think Mack is back any longer.

Mike Norvell deserves more time. FSU is 0-4. They lost to an FCS team this year. Obviously none of that is good, but you can’t keep firing guys after 2 years—especially if 1 of them was the covid year—and expect to ever get back to being a good team, unless you replace him with an Urban Meyer or Nick Saban caliber coach.

Troubled Tigers: Clemson sliding from ACC, national picture (abcnews.com; AP; Iacobelli)

The early warning signs at Clemson have turned into a desperate call for help for the 25th-ranked Tigers.

The team which opened at No. 3 in the preseason has lost twice in September for the first time since 2014 — all but ending its bid for a seventh straight berth in the College Football Playoffs.

The Tigers (2-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) were also runaway favorites for a seventh consecutive league title. Instead, they're no longer the team-to-beat in the Atlantic Division race after a 27-21 double overtime loss at North Carolina State t his past Saturday.

“All the goals are still on the table," Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said Monday. “But, obviously, we need a little help.”

The Tigers play Boston College (4-0), which begins ACC play at Clemson on Saturday night. The Eagles are coming off a 41-34 overtime victory against Missouri of the Southeastern Conference.

Tight end Davis Allen believes Clemson can bounce back quickly, no matter the hole they've dug for themselves.

“No one is used to having two losses, but we can't worry about playoffs right now,” Allen said. “As long as we put our head down and continue to work, we look up and we're 10-2. Who knows what can happen?”

Miami football second ACC Coastal favorite behind Pittsburgh per ESPN FPI (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football team is given a 22.6 percent chance to win the ACC Coastal division according to the ESPN Football Power Index. Pittsburgh is the current favorite at 38.8 percent. Miami plays at Pittsburgh on October 30. The meeting between the Hurricanes and Panthers could be the defacto ACC Coastal title game.

The ACC has already seen a lot of surprising outcomes and we are not out of September yet. Pittsburgh is 3-1 this season. They have a win at Tennessee and a home loss against Western Michigan. Virginia Tech leads the ACC Coastal with a 1-1 record. Virginia is last at 0-2 and North Carolina is 1-2.

Duke, Pittsburgh and Miami have not played an ACC game yet. The Miami football team will play its ACC opener on Thursday night when they host Virginia. Miami moved up 11 spots in the FPI this week after their 69-0 win over Central Connecticut State. The Hurricanes rank fifth in the ACC.

Clemson has the highest ACC FPI ranking and remained fifth despite a 27-21 double-overtime loss at North Carolina State on Saturday. Pittsburgh moved up nine spots to 16 after a 77-7 victory over New Hampshire. North Carolina is one spot ahead of Miami at 23rd. Miami has their entire ACC schedule in front of them.

Miami is favored to win six of its last eight games according to the FPI. The FPI projects the Hurricanes having below a 50 percent chance in two games. Miami has a 44.8 percent chance to win at North Carolina on October 16 and a 31.6 percent chance at Pittsburgh. The projections fluctuate week to week.

North Carolina who was the preseason favorite to win the Coastal is now the fifth favorite according to the FPI. The Tar Heels’ two losses place them with just a 4.5 percent chance to win the ACC Coastal. Behind Pittsburgh and Miami, Virginia Tech is listed with a 17.1 percent chance to win the Coastal and Georgia Tech is at 14.1

The way the first month of the season has gone, the ACC is wide open. A coastal division team has not won the ACC since Virginia Tech defeated Florida State in the 2010 conference championship game. Miami can put their non-conference games behind them and focus on Virginia and the ACC beginning on Thursday.

Pitt football: Pat Narduzzi weighs in on ACC landscape amid lackluster starts from Clemson, UNC (247sports.com; Straka)

Just how wide open is the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2021 following multiple early losses by preseason favorites Clemson and North Carolina? It is a question that coaches elsewhere throughout the league are bound to have trouble avoiding, though Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi is doing all he can to prevent his Panthers from looking too far ahead amid a 3-1 start.

"We're in position to play Georgia Tech (in Week 5) and that's all that matters," Narduzzi said when asked about his team's position within conference Monday. "People talk about Coastal (Division) chaos. It's ACC chaos ... It's college football. Look around the country. Look at (our last opponent) New Hampshire, an FCS program. Ten FCS teams beat Power Five teams first three weeks of the season."

In regards to Clemson and UNC, the Tigers entered the season ranked No. 3 in the AP Top 25 poll, with the Tar Heels seven spots behind at No. 10. Both teams, however succumbed in their preseason openers, with UNC falling at Virginia Tech on Sept. 3 before Clemson lost to Georgia a day later. Defeats then came again for both school on Saturday, with Georgia Tech downing UNC while Clemson fell at NC State in overtime.

Elsewhere in the ACC, the Miami Hurricanes have not exactly lived up to the hype either, with Manny Diaz's group sitting at 2-2 and unranked after opening the year at No. 14 in the AP rankings. Granted, it's not just the ACC where ranked teams have fallen early, and Narduzzi believes the NCAA Transfer Portal may have something to do with that.

"The parity we talked about last week — and again you see it all across the country," Narduzzi continued. "You're not just seeing it in the ACC. You're seeing it in the Big Ten. You're seeing Ohio State get upset and beat and you're seeing a MAC team beat Minnesota and you're seeing it all over the place. Again, I think the portal and a lot of those things has a lot to do with it."

Coastal Carolina football signs three-game series with ACC opponent (myhortrynews.com; Brooking)

Coastal Carolina football has signed on for a three-game series with the Virginia Cavaliers of the ACC, the university announced Monday.

The series between the Chants and the Cavs begins next season and also includes the ACC opponent coming to Conway.

“Our scheduling philosophy focuses on bringing strong national competition to Brooks Stadium and we are pleased to announce this series with the University of Virginia which meets that philosophy,” Coastal Carolina Athletic Director Matt Hogue said. “This series also provides a regional flavor that resonates with many current students and alumni who hail from the Mid-Atlantic area. We look forward to starting the series next season in Charlottesville.”

Coastal will play at David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville for a matchup with the Cavaliers on Nov. 19, 2022. After a year hiatus, the two teams will meet again in Conway at Brooks Stadium on Sept. 21, 2024. The series will conclude in Charlottesville the following year on Aug. 30, 2025.

With Coastal playing Virginia in 2025, that means there are two Power 5 opponents on the schedule for the Chants as they are scheduled to face with South Carolina in Columbia later that season on Nov. 22, 2025.

This will be the first time Coastal Carolina has faced off with an ACC opponent since the program's 49-3 loss to Clemson on Oct. 31, 2009. That was when Coastal was back in the FCS.

Coastal has had success against Power 5 opponents recently, sweeping a three-game series with Big 12 program Kansas, including a 49-22 win at home earlier this month in the program's first-ever time hosting a Power 5 opponent.

Looking Ahead to Week 6 (RX; HM)

Looking Ahead to Week 6

From the official ACC release of Sept. 27, 2021...

ACC Announces Football Game Times & Networks for Oct. 9

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference and its television partners announced the following football game times and networks for the week of October 9th, 2021.

Saturday, Oct. 9

  • Georgia Tech at Duke, 12:30 p.m., RSN
  • Notre Dame at Virginia Tech, 7:30 p.m., ACC Network
The following three games will kickoff at either 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 or ACC Network. Game times and network designations will be announced after the games of Oct. 2.
  • Virginia at Louisville
  • Florida State at North Carolina
  • Wake Forest at Syracuse
All times are Eastern.
__________
So that's 3 games for 4 TV/time slots - which other game is in the mix?

  • Boise State at BYU – 3:30pm, ABC or ESPN
In other words, one ACC game will definitely be on ACCN (of course!), and one will definitely be on ESPN2, and one game will be on either ABC or ESPN, with the Boise State/BYU game on the other channel.

With six losses between them already, I can't see FSU/UNC being on ABC - maybe on ESPN, if they both win this week? Otherwise, it's between the other two games, in my opinion.

Which one has the best chance of out-gunning Boise/BYU for that coveted TV slot? If Syracuse and Wake Forest both win, that game would be 4-1 vs. 5-0 with the winner getting the inside track to play for the Atlantic Division title. Virginia and Louisville have 3 combined losses already, so that doesn't sound like a great option (although if the Cards win this week, they will probably be a good TV draw).

From FanSided: Is ACC football eliminating itself from playoff contention?

So far this season, ACC football is already looking like what the Pac-12 has been over the past several years. In other words, the ACC is officially on its way to becoming a full-on cannibal conference... its teams beat other members of it to the point where, by the conclusion of the regular season, all powers have such weakened resumes that none of them are eligible to make the playoff bracket.
If you're looking for a silver lining: if this keeps up, the ACC should do very well in bowl season, which tends to reward the underrated and punish the overrated.

8-Team CFP Expansion Scenarios (RX; HM)

8-Team CFP Expansion Scenarios

One problem with the proposed 12-team playoff expansion is that it adds a 4th round to the playoffs. For this reason (and others), a lot of folks have fallen in love with 8-team scenarios. We've already discussed why we think 12 teams is the most likely outcome, but just to be thorough let's take an in-depth look at 8 teams, beginning with...

6+2: Top 6 champs plus 2 at-large bids.

From a post by user quo_vadis on CSNBBS:
...had 6+2 been in effect the past seven years, these situations would be true:

  • Western Michigan would have more playoff appearances than Michigan.
  • Memphis would have more playoff appearances than Tennessee, Arkansas or Ole Miss.
  • UCF would have more playoff appearances than Florida, FSU or Miami.
  • Boise would have more playoff appearances than all PAC teams save for Oregon and Washington.
  • Cincy would have more playoff appearances than Louisville or Kentucky.
  • Houston would have more playoff appearances than Texas or Texas AM.
IMO, there is no way that the SEC - or... the B1G - will agree to a system that allows "little brother" G5 to have a better chance of making the playoffs than flagship P5...

And that, in a nutshell, is the problem with 6+2! What if we go with fewer auto-bids, more at-large?

Former Sibley’s Department Store in Syracuse to get $37M makeover (PS; $; Moriarty)

A planned $37 million redevelopment will turn a large section of the long-vacant former Sibley’s Department Store in downtown Syracuse into a mix of commercial and retail space and apartments.

The project will breathe more life into a building that drew shoppers downtown for two decades but has been mostly vacant for the last 10 years.

Going forward, the old department store will be home to apartment tenants, and companies that make defense systems and develop real estate. Potential additional tenants include a restaurant and brewery.

The entire exterior of the building will get a redo as well. That means the faded, 1980s-style pinkish facade will soon be history. Preliminary drawings show it replaced by an off-white exterior with light and dark gray accents, and new windows.

“It will be a significant transformation,” said Jeremy Thurston, president of Hayner Hoyt Corp., the construction company that will do the work. “The building will be getting stripped down to its bones.”

The Redhouse Arts Center has occupied a 42,000-square-foot portion of the building since 2018, but the rest of the 280,000-square-foot structure at 400 S. Salina St. has been vacant for a decade.

Under plans filed with the city, Hayner Hoyt will redevelop the rest of the building and become one of the building’s anchor tenants, occupying the third floor.

The Syracuse construction company was founded in 1966 and employs 170 people. It plans to move its headquarters from Erie Boulevard West to the former department store. It also plans to open a training center and workshop in the facility to promote the development of skilled trades among the local workforce.

Alion Science and Technology Corp., a defense contractor, plans to move its Central New York headquarters from Salina to the building, becoming the site’s other commercial anchor. Alion, which employs 70 people locally, will occupy the fourth floor, using it for product testing, manufacturing and assembly and office space.

The second floor will contain 24 apartments, consisting of:

  • 11 one-bedroom, one-bathroom units with lofts that would serve as an additional bedroom or home office
  • Five one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments without a loft
  • Eight two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments
Residential amenities will include adjacent connected parking, a home theater room, a fitness area, an outdoor community balcony and private balconies.

Hayner Hoyt said it is in discussions with a financial institution, a brewery and a restaurant for some of the building’s first floor space.

In addition, a courtyard will be cut into the building from Jefferson Street, giving the building, along with the Redhouse, a new main entrance and more exterior space. And an attached 750-space garage will be renovated and reopened, serving the needs of building tenants, Redhouse events and the surrounding downtown business district.
