Welcome to World Teacher's Day!

Since 1994, World Teachers' Day has celebrated teachers. It focuses on "appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world," "provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching," and aims to bring a better understanding of the role that teachers play in developing students and society. It also commemorates the adoption of the "Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers," which took place at an intergovernmental conference in Paris on the date in 1966. The document, created by UNESCO and the ILO, set benchmarks for the rights and responsibilities of teachers and set standards for the preparation, continuing education, recruiting, employment, and teaching and learning conditions of teachers. It was followed up 31 years later by the "Recommendations concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel," which covered teachers in higher education. World Teachers' Day is co-convened by the ILO, UNICEF, and Educational International (EI). The campaign has a different theme each year.

Orange Watch: Syracuse football still on target to reach a bowl game - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: The latest ACC road loss this past weekend at Florida State brought out plenty of emotions from Orange Nation. Despite the disappointing defeat, it’s an unpredictable conference season in which the power has tilted to surprising Wake Forest, N.C. State, and Pittsburgh. Even sitting at 3-2/0-1, the Orange have progressed rather than regressed, and with four home games out of the seven left to be played, there’s still a shot to become bowl eligible.

“You are what your record says you are.” – Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells.

Winning on the road in the ACC has been a chronic problem for Syracuse football since it joined the league in 2013. The Orange are just 7-28 away from the Dome following the Florida State loss, having won essentially twice as many (13) conference games at home over that span.

The problem is without winning consistently fans will not come out in force, leaving the building to be occupied solely by the diehard season ticket base. Following a crowd-less 2020 campaign, there’s been an additional impressive turnout so far this year by the students with both core groups making a lot of noise under the new permanent roof.

It’s a Dome field advantage that has to be exploited to its fullest.

Next up for SU is Saturday’s first of three critical October home game against the ACC’s highest ranked team, surprising No. 19/20 Wake Forest (3:30 p.m. ET / ESPN2), a one-week window to turn the bitterness of losing on a last second field goal to the sweetness of knocking off a ranked team in the place Dino Babers passionately refers to as “our house.”

“We’re going to be able to compete, we’re going to be able to battle,” Babers waxed philosophically after falling to Florida State. “Some teams are going to be better, there’s nothing you can do about that. But we’re going to be able to put an effort forward. This team has got some stuff to it.”

Despite the negatives; problems with clock management, the inability to score touchdowns within 20-yards of the end zone, the lack of a lightning-fast vertical passing game further diluted by the transfer plans of leading receiver Taj Harris last weekend, and the unaccustomed hiccups on special teams, there is the brightness of a season-long stout defensive effort and the building confidence of Garrett Shrader now the unquestioned quarterback running the show.

With Taj Harris Gone, Who Needs to Step Up for Syracuse Football? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; May)

The inevitable happened on Sunday. If you didn’t see the writing on the wall that Taj Harris was not happy in Syracuse, you should have looked closer. The Orange’s top receiver’s distaste with his team boiled over and led to him announcing he was leaving Central New York and entering the transfer portal.

Now the question becomes, who steps up and fills the void? Syracuse has plenty of wide outs on the roster, 14 to be exact. Plus, you could toss in the three tight ends and seven running backs as receiving options too. So, the pool to pick from is not shallow, and SU Head Coach Dino Babers said his team has plenty of talent after the Florida State loss.

“We had more than enough in that locker room to win. We are disappointed we came up three points short, but we had more than enough in that locker room to win this game, more than enough,” said Babers.

So, who are the main candidates to take on a bigger role?

COURTNEY JACKSON

Jackson seemed to be WR1 in Harris’s absence against Florida State. The redshirt freshman hauled in six catches for 57 yards, leading the team in receiving. Syracuse’s passing offense is pretty simple, bubble screens and quick crossing routes. Jackson is good at both of those. He has the elusiveness to break screens into big gains and the speed to beat his defender across the middle. It seems like Jackson and Garrett Shrader have good chemistry, so expect him to step into the top spot.

ANTHONY QUEELEY

Queeley entered the season as WR2, but hasn’t lived up to the billing. He caught his first touchdown pass last week against the Seminoles, but has been relatively quiet other than that. Despite those struggles, Queeley is probably the most talented wide receiver on the roster. He’s got the speed and size needed on the inside and out. If he can be the receiver he’s touted up to be, Queeley can be just as good as Harris.

SEAN TUCKER

Let’s be honest here. Tucker has enough on his plate on the ground, but he needs to be an option out of the backfield. The Orange love to check it down or run designed running back screens, and that is Tucker’s domain. The plays work and they are already in the SU playbook, so don’t be surprised if SU goes to Tucker through the air more often moving forward.

What about some of the lesser-known names that could pop up in the stats sheet?

DAMIEN ALFORD

Alford is your redzone threat. Listed at 6’6 he is the tallest receiver Syracuse has, excluding the tight ends. If the Canadian learns how to utilize his height, he will be a tough cover in the corners of the endzone. Alford already has four receptions this year, so he’s established in the offense. However, with Harris out, he can grab an even bigger role.

SHAROD JOHNSON

Johnson is another player that already has a spot on the offense. He won’t need to fight for reps, but he will probably see an uptick in his targets. The redshirt-junior has had issues with dropping open passes in the past, so he’ll have to clean that up in order to help fill the whole Harris left.

DEVAUGHN COOPER

If you don’t know the name Devaughn Cooper yet, I don’t blame you. He is a redshirt senior that transferred to Syracuse this season after previously playing at UTEP and Arizona. He is a pretty average wideout without many attributes that jump off the page, but it seems like Shrader likes him. Cooper got targeted a bunch against Florida State and will most likely continue to see the ball come his way throughout the year. So, whether you think he’s the most talented option or not, he will be taking some of the Harris looks.

Teel: As he did at Richmond, Dave Clawson defying odds at Wake Forest (richmond.com; Teel)

One ACC football team is undefeated. One is on pace to average more than 30 points a game for the fifth consecutive year, and one has forced double-digit turnovers this season.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, say hello to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

If you’re surprised, you haven’t been paying close enough attention to Dave Clawson’s coaching tenure at the Power Five’s smallest school, as measured by undergraduate enrollment. Indeed, Clawson’s success at Fordham and Richmond foreshadowed much of what he has accomplished since accepting the Wake Forest job in December 2013.

He steered the Rams to their first Championship Subdivision playoff appearance in 2002, the Spiders to their first playoff semifinal five years later. Similar to Wake Forest, Fordham and Richmond are selective private institutions with limited resources for athletics.

The Richmond-Wake Forest comparison resonates most to Clawson because both compete in conferences with larger public schools that spend more on football, James Madison and Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association, Clemson, Florida State and many others in the ACC.

Rather than run from academic standards and fiscal sanity, Clawson embraces them.

“I viewed it as an opportunity, that this is our best chance to win,” he said. “Let’s celebrate it and let’s promote it and have all those things be the reason we do win and not the excuse of why we can’t win.”

Win the Deacons (5-0, 3-0 ACC) have — this will be their sixth consecutive bowl season. The goal now is to exceed Clawson’s earlier teams, to elevate Wake Forest into the final top 25 for only the fifth time in program history and to reach the ACC championship game for the second time.

Don’t bet against them.

ACC Football Power Rankings: Pittsburgh is an offensive juggernaut (saturdayblitz.com; Pryor)

This week in the ACC Power Rankings, Pitt scores 52 points in its conference opener; Clemson survives against Boston College.

There’s a dark and a troubled side of life
There’s a bright and a sunny side too
Tho’ we meet with the darkness and strife
The sunny side, we also may view

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side
Keep on the sunny side of life
It will help us ev’ry day; it will brighten all the way
If we’ll keep on the sunny side of life

Keep on the Sunny Side by The Whites

Here at headquarters, we choose to look at the bright side of this ACC football season. Sure, the ACC won’t have a playoff contender this season. That was a Clemson or bust proposition anyway. This season is filled with parody in the ACC, and that’s fine by us.

Speaking of Clemson, the Tigers found a way to defeat the Boston College Eagles in the rock fight of the week in primetime at Death Valley East. The Pitt Panthers put up 52 on Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

There is cause for optimism in Tallahassee; the Seminoles won their first game, defeating the Syracuse Orange 33-30 at Doak Walker. Wake Forest continued their winning ways defeating Louisville by a field goal at home.

So to the rivalry that ain’t bells of victory, enjoy this week’s Power Rankings before you Enter Sandman.

14. Miami Hurricanes 0-1, 2-3

At Hard Rock, the Miami Hurricanes lost a heartbreaker of a game against the Virginia Cavaliers Friday night, 30-28. Graduate quarterback, D’Eriq King did not play due to injury. Freshman quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was solid in relief of King.

The Running game was effective, and Oklahoma transfer Charleston Rambo had another solid performance with 99 receiving yards. This loss was coaching. The decision to put the game in the hands of a freshman kicker was playing not to lose.

13. Florida State Seminoles 1-2, 1-4

The Florida State Seminoles found a bit of that grit that they played with against Notre Dame in their 33-30 victory against Syracuse. Quarterback Jordan Travis had 244 total yards, including two big runs on the game-winning drive.

As time expired, Ryan Fitzgerald kicked a field goal to give the ‘Noles the three-point win against the Orange. The Seminoles are still not very good, but this game can still get Mike Norvell’s message across to the team.

12. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 1-2, 2-3

It seemed as if the Yellow Jackets left their defense at Clemson in their 52-21 loss at the hands of Kenny Pickett and the Pitt Panthers. The Jackets must have left their offense in Chapel Hill as they were unable to muster any offense in this game either.

The question for the Yellow Jackets is whether or not they are beginning to regress to the mean or if this game was just a bad performance and should be considered as such.

8. Virginia Cavaliers 1-2, 3-2

The Cavaliers were fortunate to get out of Hard Rock with a victory. That’s not to say that the V-Men played poorly. The opposite is true. Brennan Armstrong continues to make his case as the best quarterback in the ACC and a Heisman dark-horse.

Armstrong had 268 passing yards and a touchdown Friday night. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall and the offensive staff have to be excited about how well they ran the ball. The Cavaliers ran for 181 yards and 5.2 yards per carry. Virginia plays Louisville Saturday afternoon.

11. Louisville Cardinals 1-1, 3-2

This past weekend, the Louisville Cardinals lost a close game to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on the road in Winston-Salem. Cardinals’ quarterback Malik Cunningham threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns, running for two more scores.

Louisville showed some grit coming back from a 27-17 deficit to tie the game at 34 late in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals dug themselves a hole going scoreless in the third quarter they could not overcome. Louisville has another challenging game against Virginia next Saturday.

10. North Carolina Tar Heels 2-2, 3-2

The Tar Heels keep the Victory Bell for the third straight year with a 38-7 victory against rival Duke at home. Sam Howell had arguably his best game this season, throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns.

It was the defense that stole the show in this game. The Tar Heels held the Blue Devils to just 308 total yards, just one touchdown. Duke running back Mateo Durant ran for 119 yards but did not score. The rest of the offense ran for just five yards. UNC gets Florida State next weekend.

9. Clemson Tigers 2-1, 3-2

The Clemson Tigers rode their defense and a 100-yard performance by Kobe Pace for a hard-earned 19-13 win against the Boston College Eagles at home on Saturday night. It was clunky and ugly at times, but it was a win.

The defense did its job, and the offense had a couple of moments, but they have a long way to go before they can be deemed competent. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei needs to be better; there is no other way to put that.

7. Duke Blue Devils 0-1, 3-2

In their first conference game, the Blue Devils fell flat, losing the Victory Bell for the third consecutive season to the North Carolina Tar Heels 30-7. Mateo Durant did run the ball well, but the rest of the team did not.

Two turnovers, seven penalties, and an inability to convert on third down (Duke went 2-15) contributed to such a lopsided loss. Their game against Georgia Tech will be interesting as both teams look to rebound from bad losses.

6. Syracuse 0-1, 3-2

The Syracuse Orange were surprisingly let down by their defense in their 33-30 loss to the Florida State Seminoles. The ‘Noles ran for 247 yards against the Orange, who had no answer for quarterback Jordan Travis.

The Orange did run for over 200 yards against Florida State, but the passing game is still an issue. That is due in part to an offensive line that does not pass block well. That is why Garrett Schrader is starting. Somehow, the Orange have to figure out how to push the ball downfield.

Could the ACC Championship Game come down to Pitt vs. Wake Forest?

From "Week 5 ACC Roundup: Pickett leads strong group of QBs" on SouthernPigskin

Through five weeks, Pickett leads the ACC with 10.3 yards per pass and 19 touchdowns. He is also second in the conference with 346 passing yards per game and only has one interception. He’s the only quarterback in the FBS with more than 12 touchdown passes and only one pick.
With Pickett emerging as a Heisman sleeper and potential high draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Panthers are as good of a bet as any of winning the ACC...

McMahon proposes $85M aquarium at Syracuse’s Inner Harbor (PS; Moriarty)

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon on Monday proposed building an $85 million aquarium at the Syracuse Inner Harbor.

McMahon said a consultant hired by the county estimated the approximately 80,000-square-foot aquarium would create hundreds of construction and permanent jobs, draw 500,000 visitors a year and generate $50 million in economic activity annually.

The exact design of the aquarium is still to be determined. But Ted Fox, the director of the county’s Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, said it would have about 600,000 gallons of water -- about three times the amount at the New England Aquarium in Boston, which draws 1.3 million visitors a year.

The proposal will be part of the county’s 2022 budget, which McMahon plans to present tomorrow. The county legislature would have to approve it.

If approved, construction could start in late 2022 and the aquarium could open by late 2023, McMahon said.

The harbor is a former state Barge Canal terminal between Onondaga Lake and Franklin Square. The city of Syracuse has been trying to turn the harbor into a commercial, residential and recreational center for more than 20 years, but development has been slow.

McMahon and Mayor Ben Walsh said an aquarium would serve as a catalyst for further development at the harbor.

“This is big and a long time coming,” said Walsh.

McMahon said he will propose paying for the aquarium with cash, including an estimated $60 million budget surplus for 2021.

The land on which the aquarium would be built is owned by Cor Development. McMahon said the county is negotiating a purchase of the property from Cor.

Seems like the aquarium would need more parking than is in the site plan diagram.
