Welcome to USMC Birthday!

On November 10, 1775, just eight months shy of the Declaration of Independence, a new corps was formed following the introduction of the Continental Marine Act. At the time, an official plan was developed by the Continental Congress to oversee a mission intercepting ammunition cargo from Britain, using Marines. As suggested by the title, the group was known as the Continental Marines. While this group held several different duties, their core purpose was to provide additional security and support for the recently formed Continental Navy. First led by Commandant Samuel Nicholas, this branch of the burgeoning U.S. armed forces would culminate at just over 2,100 servicemen. In contrast, the number of active troops in the Continental Army at one time would reach a peak of approximately 80,000. This, along with a resolution made in November to create a stand-in official Marine Corps force, was essential to the formation and modernization of the now U.S Marine Corps. The reason for this resolution – the planning of an attack on Nova Scotia to annex it, never took place. However, the Marines remained.

Louisville Preparing for 'Best Shot' from Syracuse (SI; McGavic)

When Louisville's 2021 schedule was released earlier this year, many fans were quick to write off their game against Syracuse as an easy victory. It's hard to blame them, as the Orange finished the 2020 season with a disastrous 1-10 record - one which included a 30-0 blanking to the hands of Louisville.

Fast forward to game week against Syracuse, and an easy victory isn't exactly what's in store for the Cardinals.

The Orange have actually put together a solid season up to this point, going 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. They could just as easily be 8-1, as their last three losses - at Florida State, vs. Wake Forest and vs. Clemson - have each been by three points. In fact, Syracuse is 8-1 against the spread this season, with their worst loss coming in a 17-7 effort vs. Rutgers in the second game of the season.

"Syracuse has a good football team," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "They’ve been in a lot of close games. We know we'll get their best shot when they come in here, but we're looking forward to it."

A large part of Syracuse's relative success this season has been their emphasis on the run game, specifically with running back Sean Tucker. The second year freshman has rushed for a whopping 1,267 yards - which is second in the nation to Michigan State's Kenneth Walker III.

But he's not the only threat on the ground. While quarterback Garrett Shrader has half the yardage, 670 to be exact, he actually has 13 rushing touchdowns to Tucker's 11 - which is second in the ACC to that of Louisville's Malik Cunningham with 15. Shrader has also completed 51.2 percent of his passes for 1,119 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions.

"(Tucker)'s a really good running back, runs low to the ground, he's got good speed. I think about every game breaks off a 50-yard run with just watching the film," Satterfield said. "(Shrader)'s a runner like Malik. He can run, he's about 6’4’ or 6’5’, they're really usually utilizing his legs along with the running back’s legs."

As good as Syracuse's rushing offense is, the Orange have a defense to match it. Not Clemson, not NC State, but Syracuse is who sports the best defense in the ACC - holding teams to a league best 316.7 yards per game, which ranks 14th in the nation.

Here are 3 things Louisville football must do to beat Syracuse on Saturday (C-J; Robinson)

The Louisville football team is coming off another heartbreaking loss, falling in the final seconds to Clemson last week.

At 4-5 and 2-4 in the ACC, Louisville is two wins away from bowl eligibility, but only has three games left to play. Syracuse comes to town on Saturday, the day Louisville is set to honor Lamar Jackson by retiring his jersey, and with Louisville as a 3-point favorite it looks like a good chance for the Cardinals to add to the win total.

But it won't be easy. Syracuse has won two straight, with wins over Boston College and Virginia Tech, and is led by standout running back Sean Tucker.

Here's three things Louisville must do it if wants to end its losing streak.

Slow down Sean Tucker

Louisville has been a top-50 run defense all season, but it will get its toughest test yet with Tucker.

The Syracuse running back is leading the ACC in rushing and is the second-leading rusher in the country. He's tallied 1,267 yards in nine games with 11 touchdowns and is averaging 140 yards per game.

The first thing Louisville has to focus on against Syracuse is stopping Tucker. Quarterback Garrett Shrader can run as well which makes them a good tandem. He's rushed for 670 yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

Still, for Louisville, the focus has to be Tucker. If Shrader is the one that beats you then that's alright, but Tucker is the key to Syracuse's offense. Nobody has slowed him down yet, as he's rushed for over 100 yards in every game except the Rutgers game which was a 17-7 loss back on Sept. 11.

RB Sean Tucker chases rushing title as Syracuse faces Louisville - National Football Post nationalfootballpost.com; FLM)

A bye week afforded Syracuse star running back Sean Tucker a chance to relax, but it also saw him lose some ground to Michigan State standout Kenneth Walker III for the national rushing title.

Tucker is coming off his most productive game of the season and seeks an eighth straight 100-yard game Saturday afternoon as the Orange visit the Louisville Cardinals and attempt to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2018.

Tucker enters the final three games with 1,267 rushing yards, which trails Walker by 73 yards nationally. Tucker has eight 100-yard rushing games this season and totaled 207 yards on the ground when Syracuse overcame some early sluggishness in a 21-6 home win over Boston College two weeks ago.

“Sean knows what to do, it’s just making sure that he stays locked in and very seldom is he not,” Syracuse coach Dino Babers said at his press conference Monday.

Against Boston College, Syracuse scored all its points in the third quarter when Tucker’s 51-yard TD run preceded a 48-yard touchdown run by quarterback Garrett Shrader and a 64-yard punt return by Courtney Jackson. The Orange scored their points in a span of 4:53 while gaining 293 yards on the ground after playing five straight games decided by five points or less.

Syracuse (5-4, 2-3 ACC) leads the ACC in rushing at 247.7 yards per game and has three chances to get its sixth win to clinch a bowl bid after going a combined 6-17 in the previous two seasons. If the Orange do not beat Louisville, their remaining games are against North Carolina State and Pittsburgh, which were ranked 19th and 25th respectively last week in the playoff rankings.

“It’s a very difficult task,” Baber said. “The three teams we have to play are outstanding.”

Louisville (4-5, 2-4) is looking for a strong finish to also get a chance at becoming bowl eligible. The Cardinals were 3-1 after their 31-23 win at Florida State on Sept. 25, but are 1-4 since with losses to Wake Forest, Virginia, NC State and Clemson.

There’s a new favorite for Syracuse’s football bowl game (ACC bowl projections) (PS; $; Carlson)

One of the primary factors that determines a team’s bowl game is geography, and with Boston College now looking more likely to qualify for the postseason after beating Virginia Tech, the calculus about where Syracuse is most likely to land also changes.

Last week, I had Syracuse projected to the Fenway Bowl. This week that spot goes to Boston College.

The ACC’s bowl selection process ranks eight bowls equally at Tier 1 games. That means selections don’t have to be made according to merit but with television viewership and ticket sales serving as the primary factors.

The ACC currently has five teams that are bowl eligible in Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Virginia and Clemson. Four teams are one win away in Miami, Syracuse, North Carolina and Boston College. No team has been eliminated at this point.

Wins by Boston College (against Virginia Tech) and North Carolina (against Wake Forest) increased the odds that the ACC will use its full allotment of Tier 1 bowl games and it could need to dip into Tier 2, especially if Notre Dame struggles down the stretch and grabs a Tier 1 bowl instead of a New Years Six bowl.

Across the country there are currently 49 teams that are bowl eligible, with 19 that have been eliminated from reaching the .500 threshold. Eighty-two teams are needed to fill all the postseason spots.

ESPN’s Bill Connelly projects Syracuse with a 70 percent chance of winning six games or more with a 3 percent chance of winning out.

Koen Entringer Decommits From Central Michigan (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2022 defensive Keon Entringer has decommitted from Central Michigan, he announced on Twitter Tuesday night. Entringer, who stars for Walled Lake Western in Michigan, committed to CMU over the summer. This fall, several power five schools have started showing interest and some have extended offers.

"I would like to express sincere gratitude to Central Michigan for believing in me and giving opportunity to play division 1 football," Entringer said in a Twitter post. "My family and I have appreciated the love that you have shown during my recruitment process. With that being said, after careful consideration with my family, I am announcing that I am decommitting from Central Michigan. And now am fully re-opening my recruitment."

Since October, Syracuse, Temple, Tulane and Colorado have extended scholarship offers. That could be a reason why he has decided to take a look at other options. Syracuse had coaches at his game last week. The Orange's offer came on October 16th. Entringer says Syracuse wants him as a safety, but he is also versatile enough to play corner. In addition, Entringer says he is working on scheduling an official visit to Syracuse.

Entringer is listed at 6-2, 190 lbs.

NC State football travels to Wake Forest for huge ACC Atlantic showdown (technicianonline.com; Ellis)

Before the season, most people would probably not have thought that the biggest ACC football game would be on Nov. 13 between No. 16 NC State and No. 12 Wake Forest, but that is the case: The two teams meet in Winston-Salem with the ACC Atlantic Division title on the line.

The Wolfpack (7-2, 4-1 ACC) and the Demon Deacons (8-1, 5-0 ACC) have the two best records in the Atlantic, and while each team has two more games following this one, the winner will be in the driver’s seat to make the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 4 in Charlotte.

This will be the 115th all-time meeting between the two teams, and in the long history of the rivalry, there may never have been more on the line for both teams than this year’s game.

“It’s going to be a great game and a great challenge,” said head coach Dave Doeren. “Since we lost that game to Miami, we’ve been approaching every game as a must-win game. We’ve been in a playoff mode. We have to win this game, the next game and the next game to be in Charlotte.”

Prior to last week’s loss against North Carolina, the Deacs were off to their best start in school history at 8-0 and had reached No. 9 in the initial College Football Playoff Rankings. The last time Wake Forest won the ACC Championship was in 2006, and this could very well be the best team the school has had since then.

Key to Wake’s success this season has been the stellar play of quarterback Sam Hartman, who is third in the ACC in passing yards and has thrown an average of 419 yards and scored 18 total touchdowns in the last three games. Helping Hartman has been the lethal wide receiver tandem of Jaquarii Roberson and A.T. Perry, both of whom are in the top five in the ACC in receiving yards.

That trio has led the Deacs to one of the highest scoring offenses in the country and will be matched up against the NC State defense, which allows the fewest points per game in the ACC. The Pack has suffered major injuries on the defensive side of the ball this season, including losing redshirt sophomore linebacker Payton Wilson and redshirt junior linebacker Isaiah Moore for the year, and while the unit has held its ground the past two weeks, it will have its hands full this week.

“They’re a high-scoring group and they’re playing with confidence on offense,” Doeren said. “We’re gonna have to play really well in the secondary. We’re gonna have to help our secondary with pass rush, with underneath coverage, with change-ups and we’re gonna have to compete.”

NCAA unveils modernized constitution draft with divisions granted increased governing power
Significant changes could come to NCAA governance and enforcement in the new constitution
...on Monday [the NCAA] released a long-awaited draft of a reworked constitution. The document indicates the NCAA will no longer push back against name, image and likeness rights. It will also relinquish enforcement responsibilities, sending them down to the three divisions...
That leads to a huge question of what enforcement will look like in Division I, the most competitive level, which also has subdivisions for football. No mention is made of how enforcement would be structured or by whom...
By one estimate, the length of the NCAA Constitution will shrink from 43 pages to 15 if the draft is adopted...

Big Amazon warehouse in Clay delays opening and filling hundreds of jobs (PS; Moriarty)

The giant Amazon fulfillment center under construction in Clay won’t open this year.

Amazon had been shooting for an opening this fall but in September said supply chain issues had caused a delay in completing the 3.8-million-square-foot warehouse on Morgan Road. At the time, the company said it planned to open the $350 million facility by the end of the year.

But Amazon spokeswoman Verena Gross told The Post-Standard | syracuse.com Tuesday that the company now expects an opening in the first quarter of 2022. That could be anytime from January to the end of March.

But Clay Town Supervisor Damian Ulatowski said his sources have told him the company is now hoping to open in January. He said he’s been told supply chain slowdowns have prevented the company from completing the installation of the center’s extensive conveyor system.

During a media tour of the facility in September, workers were still installing the 10 miles of winding, computer-controlled conveyors that will swiftly move merchandise up and down the building’s five floors. Once customer orders are received, workers will pull products off mobile shelving units and place them into bins to be carried on conveyors to other employees for packaging and placement on trucks.

The facility is expected to employ 1,500 people, with wages starting at $15 an hour, plus benefits, for warehouse associates. Amazon has said it will begin hiring for the majority of jobs in the center one to two months before it opens. The hirings have not started, except for certain technical and professional jobs.
