Welcome to Doctor Who Day!

On this day in 1963, the British science-fiction television show Doctor Who first premiered. It quickly became an institution in the United Kingdom, and later gained a large fan base in the United States, where it was in syndication from the 1970's through the 1990's, and became a staple on PBS stations. In its original run, new episodes were created until 1989, and new episodes have once again been created since 2005, which continued the plot where it had left off. The show follows the adventures of "the Doctor," who is not a human, but an ancient extraterrestrial being called a Time Lord. His travels through space and time take place by using TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), a spaceship shaped like a blue British police box. As the Doctor travels to help people and civilizations in need, he is accompanied by companions, and takes on many foes, with his intellect and a minimal amount of resources. As of 2017 there had been twelve doctors, and the thirteenth doctor had been chosen, the first time a woman would play the role. Time Lords can regenerate into new incarnations, which has made it easy to write transitions to new doctors into the plot of the show. Doctor Who was originally intended for a family audience, and the use of time travel was intended to explore scientific ideas and famous events in history. Over time the science fiction stories came to dominate. There have been many spin-offs of the show in various mediums since its inception.

SU News

Babers paints a picture of SU football’s future, sounding like he’s part of it (PS; $; Mink)

Dino Babers opened his Monday press conference with a couple notes about the future of the Syracuse football program.

He touched on a $150 million fundraising goal for renovating Manley Field House and other athletic facilities projects.

He asked fans to put off bedtime and stick around for the end-of-year tradition of having seniors take a final lap around the Carrier Dome, hinting some juniors will also be wrapping up their careers after Saturday night’s game against Pittsburgh.

Chris Elmore won’t be suiting up or doing the Senior Walk: He’s coming back for a sixth season.

And Babers sounded like a coach planning to be around for his seventh.

He brushed aside a question about his job security, even though a loss on Saturday results in a fifth losing season in six years.

Babers’ case he’s the guy with one game left in the season: Nobody thought we’d have a chance to make a bowl.

This season of redemption started 10 months ago, when six seniors decided to give it one more go after a 1-10 season, Babers said.

In the summer, Babers didn’t mince words: Without those seniors, the season was over before it started.

“I knew we’d have a bridge, that we’d have an opportunity to get some things done,” Babers said Monday. “Now we’re sitting here at 11 and people may not think we got all that we could get out of it, but based off really what people thought we’d get done, we’ve overshot their things, totally, which I love proving people wrong.

Narduzzi: Pitt Won’t Rest Starters vs. Syracuse (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Saunders)

Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said that he won’t rest any starters for the regular season finale at Syracuse, even though Pitt has already secured a position in the ACC Championship Game.

“That would be a natural question: ‘Let’s go up there and keep them all healthy and play our backups and get ready for the championship game,’” Narduzzi said. “I would love to do that, but I don’t see us doing that.”

Pitt is going for 10 wins in a regular season for the first time since 1981 in the game, something that Narduzzi said means a lot. He also doesn’t want to disrupt the chemistry of his team by taking regulars out with one game to go.

“It’s been since 1981 — I think I was a freshman in high school — that we won ten regular season games,” he said. “It’s been a long time. To me, that means something. In 40 years, there’s something to prove when we go up there this weekend.”

After wrapping up the ACC Coastal with one game to play in 2018, Pitt lost its regular-season finale at Miami, and Narduzzi doesn’t seem interested in repeating that ending in 2021.

“I don’t know if that had anything to do with handling success, but we’ll find out,” he said. “We’ll find out this weekend for sure up in Syracuse.”

TARGETING TROUBLE

Pitt had two defenders ejected for targeting against Virginia, with SirVocea Dennis and Brandon Hill both finishing the game in the locker room.

Narduzzi didn’t specifically criticize the calls, but did say that he doesn’t think his team has to do any differently to avoid that outcome in the future.

“We haven’t had one all year,” Narduzzi said. “Ten games, zero. Then all of a sudden, we have two. Just mysterious targeting calls. … It’s disappointing. … No adjustments. Someone else has got to make adjustments. We need to play football.”

Babers talks improving player retention, analyzes No. 20 Pitt's performance (DO; Fernandez)

Coming off two straight blowout losses to ranked opponents, Syracuse will need to pull off one of its biggest upsets of the season against No. 20 Pittsburgh to become bowl-eligible on Saturday.

In his final midweek press conference of the season, Babers discussed the importance of senior day ahead of the Orange’s final home game. He pointed out Pitt’s rushing defense, which allows under 100 yards per game.

“This is a doggone good football team that’s gonna have an opportunity to play in the title game in the ACC and they definitely deserve it,” Babers said. “We’re looking forward to the contest, it’ll be our last contest in the Dome, (but) hopefully not our last contest in 2021.”

Here are four takeaways from Babers’ weekly press conference ahead of SU’s must-win game against Pittsburgh:

Pickett, Addison, run defense and No. 20 Pitt

Babers called Pickett the best quarterback in the Atlantic Coast and a No. 1 NFL draft pick. Babers complimented Pickett’s “unbelievable” throwing accuracy, the development he’s made over the past season and his unexpected elusiveness.

The Pitt quarterback isn’t comparable to the likes of Florida State’s Jordan Travis or Louisville’s Malik Cunningham, Babers explained, but he’s still elusive enough to make the first man miss, much like NC State’s Devin Leary. Pickett is a player that’s able to stand in the pocket and deliver throws under pressure by keeping his eyes downfield.

“He is a really, really good NFL prospect,” Babers said.

Beyond Pickett, the Panthers have an elite wide receiver in Jordan Addison, who’s eclipsed 1,200 receiving yards. He said the most comparable opponent this season was Clemson, and the Orange didn’t rotate their defensive backs around for that game.

Syracuse releases plan for Lally Athletics Complex; state-of-the-art facility to replace Manley Field House (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse University announced a $150 mullion fundraising initiative on Monday that will set the table for the construction of the John A. Lally Athletics Complex, a state-of-the-art facility that will replace Manley Field House. The campaign is an add-on to the $1.5 billion goal set two years ago when the school launched the Forever Orange campaign. SU has already exceeded $1.052 billion in private philanthropy as of Oct. 21.

“The Forever Orange campaign has been transformative for Syracuse University as a whole and we are so grateful for the donors, friends and alumni who have provided support,” athletic director John Wildhack said in a statement. “We recognize that creating a truly superior student-athlete experience demands a focused initiative that aligns academic and athletic aspirations. Philanthropy is critical to creating an environment in which student-athletes can thrive in their sport, in the classroom and in their careers. As a department, we are competing to attract the most talented student-athletes from around the nation and globe. Creating an unprecedented student-athlete experience will require equally unprecedented donor support for those who choose to wear Orange.”

Syracuse will begin the process of transforming Manley next spring with the installation of a new front entrance. Also near the top of the list: an enhanced multi-display Hall of Champions experience that will also be used as a gathering and event space. The full process is expected to require multiple years, though a timeline was not released.

The facility is set to be named after John Lally, a former SU football player and alumnus who, along with his wife Laura, made a $25 million donation commitment in 2019.

“John and Laura have been incredible partners over the years,” chancellor Kent Syverud said in a statement. “We are grateful for their loyal support of Syracuse University—as donors, as champions and as fans. This is a defining moment for Syracuse University Athletics. The launch of this transformational project advances our trajectory to further create and foster a world-class culture of academic and athletic excellence.”

One Last Chance (SI; McAllister)

With one guaranteed game left for the Orange, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers is looking forward to the game against PITT(9-4). Babers looks at this game as not only an opportunity to clinch a bowl game but an opportunity to knock off one of the best teams in the ACC.

“It’s going to be a heck of an opportunity to line up against that football team in our last game this year,” Babers said. “This is a doggone good football team that’s going to have an opportunity to play in the title game in the ACC and they definitely deserve it.”

With an opportunity for a bowl game still in sight, Babers hopes this is not the team's last contest in 2021. The Orange have failed to come out on top the last two games. The 41-3 loss to Louisville and 41-17 loss to NC State are evidence of the Orange lack of success in crucial moments this season. It seems as if when the games really matter the Orange never show up. For example, the opportunity this season to knock off Florida State, Wake Forest, and Clemson are all failed opportunities. Each of those games resulted in three point losses proving that the Orange failed to pull those out in crunch time. As well as the opportunity of winning one more game to get to a bowl game. Losses to Louisville and NC State are coming when the Orange need the wins the most. The Orange are close but not close enough. The failures of the Orange have led to reporters asking about Dino Babers’ job security.

“My job belongs to my employer, my career belongs to me,” Babers said. “I only control the things that I can control.”

Five wins likely won’t cut it. Syracuse’s bowl fate comes down to upset vs. Pitt (ACC bowl projections) (PS; $; Staff)

The Syracuse football team is probably going to need to pull off its biggest upset since the Clemson game in 2017 in order to qualify for a bowl game this season.

The Orange can still get to bowl-eligible with a win over Pittsburgh this weekend, but the odds of sneaking into the postseason as a five-win team took a hit last weekend due to four upsets.

There’s little chance it happens.

The four games that did the most damage to SU’s chances were: Florida State beating Boston College, Missouri beating Florida, Old Dominion beating Middle Tennessee and South Carolina beating Auburn.

All together, there are 82 teams needed to fill the bowl schedule this season. Seventy-two teams are already bowl eligible thanks to securing a record of at least .500. There are 20 teams that are just one win away. The winner of games between Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic, Florida and Florida State, Rutgers and Maryland, and Charlotte and Old Dominion will both reach .500, leaving four spots.

If there aren’t 82 bowl-eligible teams the rest of the spots are filled via an Academic Progress Rate (APR) tiebreaker. There are currently five, five-win teams with a better APR than Syracuse if the tiebreaker is used, with Florida, Middle Tennessee and Rutgers as three of them.

Unless some teams turn down a bowl invitation, the Orange could only absorb wins by three of the 15 teams bolded below to get in with five wins. Five of the bolded teams started the week as betting favorites. Pac-12 teams are excluded from tiebreaker possibilities because the conference requires its bowl teams to be .500.

None of the national bowl projections project Syracuse to make it.

If you’re hoping that Syracuse can sneak into bowl seasons and benefit from some additional practice time, you’re going to want to root for the teams bolded below to lose.

Foster, Mason Enrolling at Syracuse in January (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse defensive back commit Dom Foster and linebacker commit Mekhi Mason will be enrolling in January, they told All Syracuse. Foster first stated publicly he was enrolling early during episode 18 of the Bleav in Syracuse podcast (embedded below), and then announced the news on his Instagram page on Monday. Mason said in a text message he would be enrolling early.

"My excitement level is off the charts," Foster said. "I can't wait to actually start my life and change my life."

Foster committed to Syracuse in mid August over offers from Boston College, Buffalo, Kent State, Toledo, Virginia and Wake Forest, among others. The 6-2, 175 pound defensive back can play safety or cornerback, and was a dynamic return man at Warren G. Harding High School in Ohio. Prior to his senior season, he had spent his high school career playing on the offensive side of the ball. But he started working at defensive back during summer camps, and that led to multiple power five offers. He ultimately elected to pick the Orange.

Mason is a talented linebacker out of Monsignor Pace in Florida. He picked Syracuse over offers from Georgia Tech, Indiana, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, West Virginia and several others. Mason is listed at 6-1, 220 pounds and has the talent to play inside or outside backer. He is likely to start on the inside when he arrives in January.

Top Secret Fyles: Syracuse football holds bowl destiny in its own hands (nny360.com; Fyles)

From the drawers of the Top Secret Fyles:

The reeling Syracuse University football team, which is 5-6 overall, needs a win over Pittsburgh in Saturday’s ACC regular-season finale to become bowl eligible.

The problem is, the Panthers (9-2), who have already clinched a berth in the league’s title game, are listed as early 10.5-point favorites over the Orange.

So the question remains that if SU loses to Pitt on Saturday night at the Carrier Dome, would it automatically be snuffed out of a bowl game or is there a scenario for a five-win team that could play in the postseason?

There are 41 bowl games beginning in mid-December, room for 82 total schools to participate. Currently, there are 72 teams already have secured bowl eligibility. There are four games this weekend pitting five-win teams against each other that will raise the total to 76, leaving six open spots.

In past seasons, when there haven’t been enough six-win teams, losing five-win schools were allowed to play.

If the Orange falls Saturday, everything then would fall into the hands of the NCAA Bowl Committee to see if SU qualifies. If SU wins, then it would be eligible for a minor bowl game (Pinstripe, Camping World or Texas, etc.), but otherwise don’t hold your breath.

SU’s league wins this season have come against Virginia Tech, which just fired its head coach, and Boston College, whose starting QB was out.

SU has been too inconsistent, could post its seventh losing season in nine ACC campaigns, and remains in third gear when it comes to recruiting in the league.

Syracuse Football: Orange can beat Pitt in last shot at bowl game (itlh; Fiello)

In reflecting on Syracuse football and what’s transpired over the past few weeks, I started thinking about a particular movie.

“Look, If you had one shot or one opportunity. To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment. Would you capture it or just let it slip?”

In the film “8 Mile,” Eminem plays “Rabbit,” a guy from the trailer parks of Detroit with a dream to make it big as a rapper one day. But it seems every time Rabbit gets the opportunity, he gets nervous, overwhelmed and unable to display the skills he and his friends know exist within him. He keeps trying and eventually he overcomes that adversity and puts on an amazing display on stage for all to see.

Going into the bye week, the Syracuse Orange football team needed one more win to secure bowl eligibility with three games left. Previous to that, they’d lost three big games by three points in each and then went on to win the next two. They are 5-4 going into that bye week and left many fans like me optimistic they could even win all three to finish off the season.

But sadly, much like Rabbit in 8 Mile, the pressure was on and unfortunately, they failed. First, they lost at Louisville 41-3, which was their worst loss of the season. And then this past weekend in Raleigh they had another opportunity but sadly lost to a ranked NC State team, 41-17.

Syracuse football has one last shot to get a sixth win and qualify for a bowl.

This Saturday, Syracuse football has the opportunity for one more chance to get that bowl game and finish their season 6-6 without a losing record. It will not be an easy chore as they will face yet another ranked team in the Pittsburgh Panthers with a Heisman-quality QB.

But it’s at home in the Carrier Dome and it’s Senior Night at 7:30 pm. This is a chance to send those seniors off in style and say thank you. Not only pulling out one more chance at an upset but going back to a bowl game for the first time since 2018.

According to Dan Wetzel's Yahoo! Sports article, "Seriously, Notre Dame has shot at return to College Football Playoff", Notre Dame probably needs any two of the following to happen:
  • Georgia soundly defeating Alabama in the SEC championship game. How soundly? Enough to eliminate the Crimson Tide as an attractive two-loss contender.
  • The winner of Oklahoma-Oklahoma State to lose in the Big 12 championship game.
  • The winner of Ohio State-Michigan to lose in the Big Ten championship game.
  • A Cincinnati loss.
As he states, "None of these are far-fetched. And if any two happen, then the playoff committee is about out of obvious contenders... "

ACC Championship Game scenarios for Clemson, Wake Forest, NC State (fansided.com; Schmidt)

Clemson is still alive for the ACC championship after overcoming a rough stretch and getting a little help along the way.

The Tigers have won the ACC every year since 2015 but that streak looked to be in jeopardy after losses to Pitt and NC State. The rest of the conference has come back to them while Dabo Swinney’s team has played their best football of the year down the stretch. Clemson’s win over Wake Forest on Saturday handed the Demon Deacons their first ACC loss of the year and ensured the Tigers would have a chance to keep their ACC streak alive.

Clemson’s offensive issues have been documented as have their injury woes, but the defense has been one of the three or four best in the nation along with Georgia, Wisconsin and Oklahoma State. It’s the defense that has the Tigers in a position to get back to the ACC Championship Game.

But to get there, they will need a little bit of help.

ACC Championship Game scenarios

  • Wake Forest: Win and in
  • NC State: Win and Wake Forest loss and they are in
  • Clemson: Win and losses from Wake Forest and NC State gets the Tigers in
NC State hosts North Carolina on Friday so Clemson will know if they are alive or dead when they take on South Carolina in the Palmetto Bowl on Saturday evening. NC State is a 6.5-point favorite over the Tar Heels, according to WynnBET.

Wake Forest travels to Chesnut Hill to take on Boston College who is 3-2 at home this year. Wake is a 4.5-point favorite, according to WynnBET.

Clemson should take care of its business against a South Carolina program that has lost six straight to their in-state rivals but it may not matter for the ACC race if NC State and Wake Forest don’t keep the door open.

Wild mushrooms? Weedy greens? Meet the urban foragers finding food growing all over Syracuse (PS; Struck)

“This could go badly,” said Marie Claire Bryant as she leaned precariously over a cold pool of water in the woods bordering Glenwood Avenue in Syracuse. She stretched her arm toward a bright clump of watercress, just managing to grab the closest stem.

“I got it!” said Bryant, leaning back, waterlogged plant in hand.

“It actually makes a great salad,” she said, observing the dripping leaves. “I would mix it with some other salad greens, a vinaigrette, some pear…”

Bryant is part of a community of urban foragers in and around Syracuse – people who scour city parks, roadsides and gardens for leaves, berries, mushrooms or anything else edible. It’s a hobby based in nature’s cuisine, exploration and sustainable living. Some experts even see wide-ranging socioeconomic benefits to encouraging foraging in urban settings.

Bryant started foraging as a student in the joint Urban Food Forest Program between Syracuse University (SU) and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), which uses foraging to study land health, access to public space and economic opportunity.
