Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

Thanksgiving
is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Similarly named festival holidays occur in Germany and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and around the same part of the year in other places. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well.

The Rise of Kingsley Jonathan - Syracuse.edu (syracuse.edu)

When Syracuse Orange defensive end Kingsley Jonathan ’20, G’22 crushed Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis earlier this season, he did more than notch the game’s first sack. Jonathan experienced a homecoming of sorts. Three years earlier almost to the day, he famously brought down Travis’ predecessor, Deondre Francois, amid the sweltering heat of the Syracuse University stadium. “It was one of the first sacks of my college career and certainly the most memorable,” says the fifth-year senior. “I love the adrenaline rush that comes from tackling people.”

One of the ACC’s top pass rushers, Jonathan has racked up more than 80 tackles and 10 sacks throughout his college career.
Since then, the 6-foot-4-inch, 260-pounder has ascended to ACC elite—a feat underscored by his receipt of the 2020 Jim Tatum Award for being the league’s top football student-athlete. “To be honest, I didn’t think I was going to win the award,” recalls the Nigerian native, who has racked up more than 80 tackles and 10 sacks throughout his college career. “I’m blessed to use my position to be a role model for others.”

For all his size, power and first-step quickness, Jonathan is what some pundits call a “thinking player.” Careful. Deliberate. Able to take in the entire field while scanning the line of scrimmage. Such moxie has earned him praise from fans and teammates alike. Football head coach Dino Babers compares Jonathan to a high-performance engine. “Kingsley is an outstanding leader for his generation,” Babers says. “He is a great representative for Syracuse University and our program in the classroom, throughout the community and on the football field.”

Jonathan, who graduated magna cum laude from the iSchool, is a two-time semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, also known as the Academic Heisman.

Optimizing PerformanceLink

When not anchoring one of the ACC’s most veteran-laden defensive lines, Jonathan holds court in the School of Education. Credit the COVID-19 pandemic for giving him an extra year of NCAA eligibility—and the chance to pursue a master’s degree in instructional design, development and evaluation. Encamped in historic Huntington Hall, he explores instructional solutions for various learning and performance problems. Mostly the stuff of business, industry and education, Jonathan explains. “Everybody wants to do things more efficiently and effectively. Instructional design models can optimize behavioral performance.”

Orange Watch: Bowl game critical for 2021 Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: After becoming one win shy of bowl eligibility following the home win over Boston College the day before Halloween, it’s critical to the program’s future that Syracuse seals the deal with an upset victory over 20th ranked Pittsburgh Saturday night (7:30 p.m. ET/ACC Network) in the regular season finale in the Dome.

Just how vital is making a bowl game for Dino Babers and the Syracuse football program? Let us highlight the reasons why it is imperative to go bowling in Babers sixth season and the ninth year of ACC play:

  • The key experienced seniors. Six players announced heading into the season that they would take advantage of being given another year of eligibility by the NCAA due to the pandemic-plagued 2020 campaign. With the unique classification of being redshirt seniors, defensive linemen Josh Black, Kingsley Jonathan, Cody Roscoe, and McKinley Williams, along with offensive lineman Airon Servais, all made a commitment to return after the 1-10 disaster. They deserve to go out with a bang this time around. On a side note, Babers announced Monday that fellow senior, fullback Chris “Rhino” Elmore, is going come back for another year in 2022 after being injured and playing in only four games this season. He’ll then be listed by class as a redshirt senior as well.
  • Showcasing Sean Tucker. After bursting on the scene last year as a true freshman, all Tucker has done so far through 11 games is set the school’s single season rushing record, eclipsing the mark set by Joe Morris in the 1979 season that consisted of no home games on campus. Tucker has run into defenses specifically designed to stop him, and his production has tapered off in two November games, but with 233 carries for a record 1,467 yards and 12 touchdowns, seeing Tucker play in a bowl game would be another couple of weeks of deserved national attention for SU’s 2021 All-American player.

Sean Tucker weaved through memes and tweets en route to a record-breaking season (thenewshouse.com; Zulkofske)

Reporters gather in Syracuse University’s football complex, huddled at one end of the hallway near Ernie Davis’ 1961 Heisman Trophy. The locker room doors swing open, and Sean Tucker walks out.

Tucker only says what he needs to. He sidesteps iPhone microphones and stiff-arms TV cameras by thanking his offensive line and speaking in short, concise, one-sentence answers for about five minutes.

Last weekend against NC State, Tucker shattered the Syracuse University 1,372 yard single-season rushing record that Joe Morris set in 1979. As of now, his 1,467 rushing yards rank third among running backs in all of college football.

And though there are similarities between he and the great Orange running backs who carved the Dome’s turf before him, Tucker is different. He speaks to the world of college football through the blue glow of his phone, typing his game stats on Twitter as he does faithfully after every game he plays.

Another ACC win Syracuse 21 BC 6. I'm pleased with my performance and with the outcome of the game. I had 26 Att for 207 Yds and a TD. With a much needed bye week and 3 games left, I plan to finish strong! pic.twitter.com/vn6RdJkPV6
— Sean Tucker (@seantucker2020) November 1, 2021

In some tweets, he says he’s just getting started. Last week’s edition dropped 24 hours after Tucker racked up 105 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Wolfpack. It’s a postgame habit that Steve Tucker, Sean’s father, said began when his son was a sophomore at Calvert Hall College High School in Towson, Maryland. The two-sport athlete tweeted little snips about how he performed to update family and friends who couldn’t make it to his football games and track meets, for which he ran a variety of short-distance sprinting events. Steve supplied video highlights, in which he often shot from the best spots in the stands, and Sean gave them the facts.

“It’s just been a simple place for people who like to follow Sean to follow what happened.” Steve Tucker said. “He didn’t have that same type of coverage that you have in college.”

We lost Saturday, NC St 41 Syr 17. I'm pleased with my performance but not happy with the outcome. With just 13 Att for 105 Yds and TD there was so much more I could have done. One more game one more win. Cuse fans let's pack the house this Saturday! I'm still in the fight.. pic.twitter.com/fYTNkx1fbE

Syracuse Football: Sean Tucker in striking distance for national rushing title (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football running back Sean Tucker is going to win the Atlantic Coast Conference rushing title for the 2021 season, and he’s got a shot at leading the country in rushing yards.

But it won’t prove easy for the sophomore. In the regular-season finale for the Orange (5-6, 2-5), Tucker and the ‘Cuse potent rushing offense will battle No. 20 Pittsburgh, which has the conference’s No. 1 rushing defense, only allowing 98.1 yards per game on the ground, according to ACC statistics.

Last weekend, the Panthers (9-2, 6-1) held off Virginia, 48-38, to win the ACC’s Coastal division and earn a trip to the league’s title game, which will take place on December 4 in Charlotte, N.C.

Before that, Pittsburgh will travel to Central New York this coming Saturday night as the regular stanza wraps up. And the Panthers defense will look to contain Tucker, which is not an easy task.

Syracuse football RB Sean Tucker is close to the national rushing lead.

This past Saturday on the road, Tucker carried 13 times for 105 yards, although the Orange fell to top-25 N.C. State, 41-17. That output gave him 1,467 rushing yards for the season, breaking the previous ‘Cuse single-term record of 1,372 yards set by the legendary Joe Morris in 1979.

Pitt earns ACC’s highest ranking by College Football Playoff committee (post-gazette.com; McGonigal)

There has been only one matchup between ranked ACC teams this fall. But from the looks of it, next Saturday’s ACC championship game could be the second.

Pitt came in at 17th in the College Football Playoff committee’s rankings, which were released Tuesday night.

This is the first time Pitt — which was 17th in the Coaches Poll and 20th in the Associated Press poll — is the highest-ranked ACC team since it joined the league in 2013.

The Panthers aren’t alone in the committee’s rankings, though. Wake Forest, N.C. State and Clemson were ranked 18th, 20th and 23rd, respectively. Guaranteed to face one of those three teams, Pitt is set up to play a ranked opponent in the ACC title game.

Elsewhere, Georgia remained atop the rankings. But there was movement beneath the Bulldogs after Oregon’s emphatic loss to Utah and Ohio State’s blowout win over Michigan State. The Buckeyes were ranked second with Alabama and Cincinnati ranking third and fourth, respectively. Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Ole Miss and Oklahoma rounded out the committee’s top 10.

There was one four-loss team ranked, but it wasn’t 7-4 Penn State. Arkansas, after playing Alabama relatively close over the weekend, stayed in at 25th.

College football picks: Big stakes from ACC to Mountain West (startribune.com; AP; Russo)

So much to be decided heading into this week's Thanksgiving college football feast.

Let's sort it out, conference by conference.

Atlantic Coast Conference: No. 20 Pitt is locked into the conference championship game and will face No. 21 Wake Forest, No. 24 North Carolina State or Clemson. Wake is in with a win. N.C. State takes the Atlantic Division with a win and a Wake loss. If both lose, Clemson gets to the ACC championship for a seventh straight season.

American Athletic Conference: No. 4 Cincinnati will play No. 19 Houston. Where the game will be played will be determined by whether the Bearcats win Friday at East Carolina.

Big Ten: The winner of Michigan-Ohio State takes the East. Wisconsin takes the West with a victory and Iowa takes it if the Badgers lose and the Hawkeyes win. If both lose, that opens the door for Minnesota and also makes Purdue's result relevant, though the Boilermakers can't win the division.

Big 12: Oklahoma State is in. If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, the conference title game is a rematch next week. If Oklahoma State wins and Baylor wins, it's Cowboys-Bears.

Conference USA: No. 15 UTSA has clinched a division and will play the winner of the Western Kentucky-Marshall game.

Mid-American Conference: Northern Illinois will play the winner of Saturday's Miami, Ohio, at Kent State game.
Mountain West: Lots of possibilities but the biggest game is Boise State at San Diego State, kicking off at 9 a.m. PT on Black Friday. The Aztecs host the conference title game with a victory. Even with a victory, Boise State needs help to clinch its division because Air Force holds a tiebreaker.

Pac-12: Utah has the South clinched. Oregon wins the North by beating Oregon State, but a loss sends either the Beavers or Washington State to the conference title game for the first time.

Southeastern Conference: Georgia vs. Alabama is set, but both need to take care of some rivalry business first.

Sun Belt: Same as above for Appalachian State and No. 23 Louisiana.

Next Coach Fired Odds 2021-11-23

UPDATE: Odds for next NCAA coach fired

Dan Mullen is the latest casualty in the collegiate head coaching carousel, and a familiar face could be the next to fall.
SportsBetting.ag made Steve Sarkisian the favorite to be the next NCAA coach fired. Sark's Texas Longhorns were humiliated by Kansas two weeks ago and loss their sixth straight game this Saturday. However, Miami's Manny Diaz has moved into the favorite position over the last hour.*

2021 ACC Bowl Projections - Week 13, 2021 (bcintertuption.com; Flannery)

CFP & NY6

Based on current results, we’re going to say Pitt will get the honor of representing the ACC as its champion. They’re in the drivers’ seat to the championship game and their offense has looked very strong all season with highly-regarded QB Kenny Pickett. The other top candidate for this position would be Wake Forest, the likely Atlantic representative, but they’re on a recent skid and Pitt looks like the stronger squad.

Typically the ACC champion would automatically be sent to the Orange Bowl, but the Orange Bowl is a CFP game this year, so an ACC representative in the NY6 is not guaranteed. Still, I believe Pitt will be sent to the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix to play against another at-large. The other option would be the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Next, Notre Dame is allied with the ACC for bowl bids, but can also earn an at-large spot themselves in a number of bowls. Being 10-1 at the moment and ranked #8 in the country, it is likely that Notre Dame will be selected for an NY6 bowl (or a CFP slot), and I predict they will be sent to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

The next tier of ACC bowl games is an even selection process between 8 different bowls:

  • The Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando versus Big 12 (last played by Miami)
  • The Gator Bowl in Jacksonville versus SEC (last played by NC State)
  • The Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte versus SEC (last played by Wake Forest)
  • The Sun Bowl in El Paso versus Pac-12 (canceled in 2020, last played by FSU in 2019)
  • The New Era Pinstripe Bowl in NYC versus Big Ten (canceled in 2020, last played by Wake Forest in 2019)
  • The Holiday Bowl in San Diego versus Pac-12 (new to the ACC)
  • The Fenway Bowl in Boston versus the American Athletic (brand new)
  • The Military Bowl in Annapolis versus the American Athletic (canceled in 2020, last played by UNC in 2019)
These bowls likely won’t select the same school two times in a row, and will mostly try to avoid selecting a school that has attended in the past few years.

Now other likely ACC bowl teams will include, in order of expected finish:

  • Wake Forest (9-2) clinched
  • NC State (8-3) clinched
  • Clemson (8-3) clinched
  • Virginia (6-5) clinched
  • Miami (6-5) clinched
  • Louisville (6-5) clinched
  • Boston College (6-5) clinched
  • UNC (6-5) clinched
Given that information, these top 8 bowls are likely to select...
  • Wake Forest to the Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando versus Big 12 (Baylor? Kansas State?)
  • NC State to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte versus SEC (Kentucky? Mississippi State?)
  • Clemson to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville versus SEC (Kentucky? Mississippi State?)
  • Virginia to the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in NYC versus Big Ten (Purdue? Minnesota?)
  • Miami to the Sun Bowl in El Paso versus Pac-12 (Washington State? UCLA?)
  • Louisville to the Military Bowl in Annapolis versus the American Athletic (East Carolina? Memphis?)
  • Boston College to the Fenway Bowl in Boston versus the American Athletic (SMU? UCF?)
  • UNC to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego versus Pac-12 (UCLA? Arizona State?)

Hidden Gems of CNY: An old 2-room schoolhouse where you can now learn what great food is all about (PS; $; Miller)

Just because the old two-room schoolhouse on Barker Hill Road has been closed for 55 years doesn’t mean you can’t learn a thing or two after walking through the front door.

What once was Southwood Elementary School is now School & Vine Kitchen and Bar. Think of Dennis and Catherine Yost as your headmasters, and they’re here to make sure you learn what good food and fancy drinks for not a lot of money is all about.

Dennis and Catherine entered the restaurant business 30 years ago when they bought Lox, Stocks & Bagel on Geddes Street, next to Jreck Subs. They sold that and opened the Clinton Park Café on South Clinton Street, now home to Glazed & Confused donuts. After eight years, they opened Panini’s sandwich shop on Harrison Street. They ultimately sold that and ditched the Monday-to-Friday daytime hours to open a fancy sit-down restaurant. They just needed a location.

“I actually found this on the internet,” Dennis said as he prepped for a recent Wednesday dinner crowd. “The building was for sale, so we went to check it out. It was actually hard to find, but when we did find it, we said right away, ‘Man, if we can’t fill this little place, we shouldn’t be in business.’”

This rectangular building that’s now blanketed in vines really is hard to find. It’s a hidden gem that’s truly hidden. It’s in the middle of one of Syracuse’s first suburban neighborhoods, just off East Seneca Turnpike.

The Southwood “two-teacher school” was built in 1937 by architect Fred O’Connor, who designed the New York Central passenger station on Erie Boulevard. The school closed in the late 1960s, and the late Sam Cortese turned it into a custom drapery shop, Decor Designs. When he moved his business three blocks around the corner, it became Norma’s Hair salon. The building, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sat vacant when Norma moved her salon to Manlius.

Dennis and Catherine bought the building and spent eight months renovating the interior, trying to preserve as much of the character as possible while adding a gourmet kitchen.
