Welcome to Giving Tuesday

GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that kicks off the charitable giving season. Coming just after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it was created in part as a response to the commercialism and consumerism of those days. It was started in 2012 at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y—a cultural center in New York City that has focused on values such as service and giving since its founding in 1874. The Belfer Center partnered with the United Nations Foundation in the days' creation. The day has been sustained by the founders, as well as a team of influencers, including CEOs from various companies, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has provided leadership support. On the day, a diverse group of individuals and organizations—nonprofit, civic, business, and corporate—celebrate by donating and giving their time, talents, and resources. Thousands of organizations now participate in the day worldwide, in almost 100 countries.

Pittsburgh Panthers defensive lineman John Morgan III (6) tackles Syracuse Orange wide receiver Courtney Jackson (85). The Syracuse Orange football team take on the Pittsburgh Panthers at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Nov. 27, 2021.Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

ACC Power Rankings: Syracuse finishes the season among the bottom 3. Does next year look any better? (PS; $; Carlson)

The Syracuse football team started the season near the bottom of this list and it will finish that way too, moving up just one spot over the course of the season from No. 13 to No. 12 after finishing the year with three consecutive lopsided losses.

Syracuse started slowly, built up hope in the middle and then struggled late, as injuries mounted and the Orange faced a stretch of three straight upper-half teams.

I’ve included where I projected teams at the start of the season, so you can decide for yourself whether it’s worth following this list next year or if you want to get your insight somewhere else, as well as a little bit about what seems to lie ahead for each program.

My biggest misses were at the top, where both Pittsburgh and Wake Forest surprised. I was pretty accurate at the bottom, much to the dismay of Syracuse fans, who will likely wind up hoping that trend doesn’t continue next year.

1. Pittsburgh

Record: 10-2 (7-1)
Last week’s ranking: 1
Last week’s result: Win 31-14 at Syracuse
Start of the year ranking: 6
Why No. 1? Pittsburgh suffered its annual two head-scratching defeats to inferior teams but I didn’t anticipate the Panthers being good enough to beat everyone else on its schedule thanks to its customary run-stopping defense and the ACC’s best quarterback.

The Panthers will lose future ACC Player of the Year Kenny Pickett but their success under esteemed offensive coordinator Mark Whipple will likely make Pitt an interesting place for any desirable transfer quarterback on the marker this offseason, and landing one should keep expectations high.

2. North Carolina State

Record:
9-3 (6-2)
Last week’s ranking: 2
Last week’s result: Win 34-30 vs. North Carolina
Start of the season ranking: 4
Why No. 4? The Wolfpack have become a team that can be counted on to have athletes across the field annually, and they lived up to expectations this season.

North Carolina State will lose some veteran pieces next year but as long as quarterback Devin Leary returns it shouldn’t fall off too badly.

3. Clemson

Episode 24 - Displeased with the Cuse Season Ending (The Bleav; podcast; McAllister)

Football Takeaways: Syracuse misses bowl game for a third straight season (thenewshouse.com; Zulkofske)

Kenny Pickett, Pat Narduzzi and the Pittsburgh Panthers strolled into the Dome on Saturday night and took Syracuse’s chances at bowl eligibility with them.

After a late-season bye week, the Orange (5-7) lost their last three games by an average difference of 26 points. Syracuse won’t play football again until Sept. 10, 2022, against the UCONN Huskies.

Offensive rhythmic woes

Syracuse’s defense held the Panthers’ offense, which averaged 43.9 points per game before playing the Orange, to 31 points and 333 total yards. SU appeared to solve its early scoring troubles after Courtney Jackson‘s opening drive TD to go ahead 7-0.

But Garrett Shrader, who threw two touchdowns and 217 yards, and Sean Tucker, who gained just 29 yards on 13 touches, struggled to gain momentum after that. Jackson led all receivers with eight catches for 92 yards and two scores. The Orange only rushed for 25 yards on 30 carries between Shrader and Tucker.

“I think we found a rushing attack (this season). I think we need to have an opportunity to be able to throw the ball, to match that so we can become more balanced and unpredictable,” head coach Dino Babers said. “(Pitt) is a good run-stop defense, but what they were giving us was massive throws all over the football field which we need to be able to take advantage of.”

A senior send-off

Syracuse football recognized eight seniors who played their last game in an Orange jersey on Saturday night. No one had a bigger impact this season than defensive lineman Cody Roscoe, a transfer from McNeese State, who finished his second season in Syracuse with 7.5 sacks and 45 tackles.

Defensive lineman Josh Black made 156 tackles and nine sacks over six seasons with Syracuse. Offensive tackle Aaron Servais ended his Orange career with 60 consecutive starts: the longest active streak among FBS offensive linemen.

“(We’re) obviously disappointed about the loss but really excited about the bridge that our super seniors left us,” Babers said. “They gave us an opportunity to rebound from that COVID year, that asterisk year, to get us back to where we can start to do some things.”

Axe: Are Syracuse football fans buying what John Wildhack is selling? (PS; $; Axe)

John Wildhack was at the podium again on Monday.

The Syracuse University athletic director has been at that wooden structure often this year to announce retirements, the hiring of two new lacrosse coaches, do an Orange state of the union and address concerning details within the women’s basketball program and a horrifying domestic incident with ex-lacrosse player Chase Scanlan.

It was football, the straw that stirs the athletic department’s drink, and bringing back head coach Dino Babers for a seventh season on the agenda Monday.

Wildhack played all the expected hits at Monday’s presser in an attempt to justify retaining a head coach who recently completed a close-but-no-cigar 5-7 season that left the Orange out of a bowl game for the fifth time in six years.

It was that coveted 13th game that has become as close to a line in the sand as Wildhack will draw and define an expectation for 2022.

“I’m never going to put a pure number out there in terms of number of wins,” Wildhack said. “But listen, we want to be playing in that 13th game. That’s your goal every year. You want to play in that 13th game. If you play the first 12 really well the 13th game could be an ACC championship game and then you can play beyond that.”

Wildhack cited progress by the Orange running game and defense, the potential of 18 of 22 starters returning and the competitive nature of the ACC, where Syracuse was one of seven teams to finish with either a 5-7 or 6-6 record, as reasons to stay the course.

ACC Football Power Rankings, Nov. 29: Wake & Pitt get ready for title bout - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Here are the final ACC Power Rankings of the 2021 season — topped by the two teams headed to league’s title match.

1. Wake Forest

Wake Forest put together a statement win on the road vs. Boston College: 41-10, with Sam Hartman accounting for four total touchdowns. In doing so, Wake Forest clinched the Atlantic Division.

Feels like 2006, you guys.

2. Pittsburgh
Kenny Pickett did the thing — four touchdown passes — and Pitt rolled Syracuse, 31-14.

3. NC State
It looked like the lights were about to go out on NC State — and then lightning struck. NC State’s improbable come-from-behind victory over North Carolina was one for the ages.

This is a truly incredible statistic, too.

NC State trailed by 9 with 2:12 left to play in the 4th quarter vs North Carolina before coming back to win.
They are the 1st team to win a game this season when trailing by 9 with less than 2:30 to play.

‘They represent all of us’: Pitt community hopes for ACC championship title - The Pitt News (pittnews.com; Ross)

For Christian Spears, deputy athletic director of Pitt Athletics, Pitt’s appearance in this weekend’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship game is about more than just the football team — it reflects on the University as a whole.

“This team has worked extremely hard to put themselves in this position,” Spears said. “They represent all of us. They represent our students, our University, our Oakland community and our City. An ACC championship for Pitt football is a reflection on us all.”

Pitt earned its place in the 2021 ACC Football Championship Game with a 48-38 win over the University of Virginia on Nov. 20. This win also cemented the Panthers as the champions of the ACC Coastal Division. They will play Wake Forest, the winner of the ACC Atlantic Division, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Pitt fans across the country can tune in to ABC to watch the game.

Spears said the achievements of the football program is just one of the reasons Pitt students should take pride in their school.

“We are an elite University in an awesome community that plays football at an elite level, and we should all be proud of it,” Spears said.

Pitt Athletics, Pitt Program Council (PPC) and the Division of Student Affairs teamed up to coordinate a trip to the ACC Championship Game, according to Nick Jones, PPC’s public relations director. Jones, a senior media and professional communications major, said PPC saw the game as a great opportunity for the three organizations to collaborate.

“It’s a very big occasion to go down to North Carolina to see Pitt football play for the ACC championship, and we just wanted to throw an amazing event together, so we decided a collaboration between us three would be a great way to do that,” Jones said.

Rivalry Games We'd Like to See (RX; HM)

Rivalry Games We'd Like to See

Last week Big Game Boomer (BGB to some of us) tweeted this:
These rivalry games should be played this weekend, and it's a damn shame that they aren't. pic.twitter.com/m5ARJowlAK
— Big Game Boomer (@BigGameBoomer) November 26, 2021
Here are the ACC-related rivalry games in BGB's list:

2. Pitt vs. West Virginia
5. Penn State vs. Syracuse
7. Boston College vs. Miami
8. Michigan State vs. Notre Dame
BONUS: 9. Maryland vs. Navy

Not bad, but we can do much better, I think...

Pitt - yes, the "Backyard Brawl" was a pretty good series, but let's be honest, that game was only moved to Rivalry Week when the Pitt/Penn State series was halted. The "Keystone Classic" is the REAL rivalry!
Syracuse - I have no problem with Orange vs. Nittany Lions, but if Penn State is going to agree to a non-conference rivalry game, they have one far more important (see previous). So, which other team(s) might Syracuse play as an OOC rival? Plenty! I like Northwestern, Stanford, and USC from a cultural point of view, and if you're looking at geography, Rutgers makes a lot of sense.
Boston College and Miami - BGB must've been thinking of Flutie-to-Phelan, but those days are long gone. If anything, BC vs. Syracuse makes a lot of sense; that game is played annually, and it's usually pretty good. As for the Hurricanes, while BC isn't a bad rival, a better one might be Houston or TCU.
Notre Dame - for the Irish, Michigan State is too "friendly" to be a true rivalry. Yes, they've played almost 80 times, and yes, many of those games were quite good, but... if you want a pure hate-fest, this needs to be Notre Dame vs. Michigan.
Maryland - this former ACC team should get away this easily! Navy may be in-state, but their rivals are Army and Air Force! The Terps, on the other hand, need to face a former rival from the current ACC. The Virginia Cavaliers are the obvious choice, but if you want to think outside the box, how about Virginia Tech, NC State, or even Miami?

Syracuse.com writers (not just Axe) apparently were not enthused by JW's press conference.
