Welcome to National Lager Day!

Lager beer is celebrated today. Most lager is matured or conditioned at a cold temperature, and is cool and bottom fermented with a particular yeast. The term lager means "storeroom" or "warehouse" in German. The beer originated in the Austrian Empire in the area that is now the Czech Republic. Throughout the medieval period, cold storage—or "lagering"—was common, in places such as caves, and bottom-fermenting yeast began being used in the early fifteenth century. As refrigeration became more prevalent, so did lager: it could be brewed year round and in more places, and could be kept cold until being served. In 1870, Spaten became the first brewery with large-scale refrigerated lagering tanks.
There are various types of lager. Pale lagers are the most common type of lager beers, and are usually light and mild. The brewing process for pale lagers developed in the mid nineteenth century when pale ale brewing techniques were applied to lagering methods. Some types of pale lagers are Helles, pilsner, Märzen, and bock. Pilsner is the most drank beer in the world today, and the first company to brew it was Pilsner Urquell. Vienna lager was developed in Vienna in 1841, and is reddish brown or copper colored, with a slight malt sweetness and a medium body. Today it is more popular in North America than it is in Europe, and a common example is Dos Equis Amber. Dark lager was the main lager made before the 1840s, and today it ranges in color depending on its region or brewing method. Examples include dunkel, which is the German word for "dark," and is between 4.5% and 6% alcohol by volume; doppelback, which is similar to dunkel but stronger; and schwarzbier, which is almost black, is similar to stout, and has a chocolate or liquorice tinged flavor.

Syracuse football's 2022 recruiting class sits at 10 players entering the weekend. National Signing Day is on Wednesday, December 15th, and it would not be a surprise if that number grows before the early signing period is over.

Three of those 10 commits will be on campus this weekend and will play a role in trying to convince Avery Powell and Tapuvae Amaama that Syracuse is the right spot for them. Amaama is not expected to sign early, however, as he has told All Syracuse he will announce his decision at the Polynesian Bowl in January.

Syracuse football offers Terrance McClain, JUCO OL who is closing in on decision (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football extended an offer to junior college offensive lineman Terrance McClain on Wednesday, entering the mix less than a week before his expected decision. A Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College prospect with four years to use three seasons of eligibility, McClain has already narrowed his options down to five.

The Orange is joined in the finalist group by Jackson State, Memphis, Utah State and East Carolina. McClain previously announced that his recruitment is "shut down" and that he'll be signing on Dec. 15, the first day of the early signing period.

The 6-foot-4, 295-pound McClain is unrated by the major recruiting services after spending the last two years at Coffeyville. Previously, the Sumter (S.C.) native played for Crestwood High School. McClain holds offers from all of his finalists as well as FIU, Southern Miss, UMass, New Hampshire, Gardner-Webb and Abilene Christian. He took an official visit to Memphis in November.

Syracuse currently has 10 players committed to its Class of 2022, including two offensive linemen in Joe Cruz and Chad Schuster. Mike Schmidt, SU's 0-line coach, has been on the hunt for veterans to bolster an experienced returning group since the Orange's 2021 season ended.

Tucker is SU football’s first RB to earn All-America honors since Little (PS; Mink)

Syracuse running back Sean Tucker has been named a second-team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, becoming the school’s first tailback to earn All-America honors since Floyd Little in 1966.

It’s the highest honor yet for Tucker, who broke the school’s 42-year-old, single-season rushing record this past fall.

In doing so, Tucker galvanized support in the fan base to have the school unretire the No. 44, stirring the debate over whether the fabled jersey number worn by Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Little should return to the field.

The honor gives even more merit to that discussion and adds to a growing list of postseason accolades for the Owings Mills, Maryland native.

Tucker is just the school’s fourth backfield player to earn All-America honors since Little. Fullback Larry Csonka was an unanimous All-American in 1967, quarterback Don McPherson earned unanimous honors in 1987 when he finished runner-up in Heisman Trophy voting and Marvin Graves was a second-team selection by the Associated Press in 1992.

Little is the football program’s only three-time All-American.

The Walter Camp Foundation released its All-America team Thursday night during ESPN’s College Football Awards show. It is the first of five groups recognized by the NCAA as All-America selectors to announce their team. The panel includes head coaches and sports information directors.

Syracuse Football: Deservingly, Sean Tucker scoring All-American honors (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football star running back Sean Tucker had a record-setting year for the Orange program, and the national recognition will be arriving for him, thankfully.

That being said, the sophomore did recently get hosed by not being named as one of the three finalists for the Doak Walker Award, which honors the country’s top running back. And CBS Sports left Tucker off of both its All-America units, which I find absurd.

Still, he was obviously named to the All-ACC first team, and Tucker in fact received the most votes of any offensive player on this first squad. Per cuse.com, Tucker has been named a second-team All-American by The Athletic.

Additionally, Tucker has landed on ESPN’s 2021 All-America squad. He and Michigan State junior Kenneth Walker III were the two running backs named to ESPN’s All-America unit.

The awards, appropriately, are rolling in for Syracuse football RB Sean Tucker.

A native of Owings Mills, Md., Tucker rushed for 1,496 yards during the 2021 stanza, which eclipsed the previous Orange record held by ‘Cuse legend Joe Morris, who tallied 1,372 rushing yards in 1979.

In 2021, Tucker led the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing during the regular season, and he finished at No. 4 across the country, although at 5-7, Syracuse football didn’t qualify for a post-season bowl game.

Tucker, who was none too happy with his limited amount of carries in the recent 2021 home finale, a loss to Pittsburgh, recorded 12 touchdowns on the ground and 14 TDs in total.

Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing and Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim shake hands Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. (Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com)

Axe: SU-Georgetown always matters; football’s first big offseason move (quick takes) (PS; $; Axe)

Some quick takes on a rivalry that will always matter and a big get for Syracuse football as soon as I remind you to keep an eye out for the “Old Newsboys” this weekend to help a great cause.

Rivalry Renewed

We are a decade removed from Syracuse’s application to join the ACC being accepted, a move that pulled the linchpin out of the old Big East and thrust SU basketball into a new world.

As the college sports landscape continues to evolve at breakneck pace with NIL, the transfer portal, coaching salaries on the brink of appearing on the Fortune 500 list and more realignment on the way, it’s nice to know you can count on certain things.

The Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry is the basketball equivalent of a Christmas card, an analog throwback in a digital world. The historic series, currently owned by Syracuse 51-43, now includes the children of some of the original participants with Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim playing for Syracuse and Ryan Mutombo on the Hoyas’ roster.

The games remain competitive. The Orange and Hoyas are deadlocked (3-3), and the largest margin of victory is 10 points since the two old rivals started playing again regularly in 2015.

The more things change, the more some things need to stay the same.

Syracuse and Georgetown crossing paths every season is on the short list of things that should carry on.

NCAA bans 'fake slide' play made famous by Kenny Pickett's touchdown run in ACC title game (cbssports.com; Dodd)

One of the season's biggest fake outs has now been permanently banned -- at least for the postseason. Reacting to Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett's dazzling scoring run in the ACC Championship Game, the NCAA sent a rules interpretation Thursday that bans the so-called "fake slide" by ball carriers.

NCAA secretary-rules editor Steve Shaw sent an email blast to officials adding language to Rule 12-3-3 that deals with dead balls and loose balls. The interpretation told officials the ball will become dead if a ballcarrier "simulates or fakes as if he will begin a feet-first slide."

Pickett's 58-yard touchdown run to open scoring in the ACC Championship Game went viral when he deked a Wake Forest defender by briefly simulating a slide. Pickett later admitted to the tactic which, until Thursday, wasn't covered by the rules.

If you watch the ACC Network on YouTubeTV (or the ACC Digital Network on YouTube) with a Roku, fear not - you won't be losing them today after all!
Effective today, we have agreed to a multi-year extension with Google for YouTube and YouTube TV. This agreement represents a positive development for our shared customers, making both YouTube and YouTube TV available for all streamers on the Roku platform.

From ReviewGeek: Your Roku Won’t Lose YouTube After All … For Now

...Google and Roku probably decided to halt this fight before things get unprofitable. YouTube was set to disappear from Roku on December 9th (tomorrow), and its absence would almost certainly send both Roku customers and YouTube users into a rage. (But there’s no guarantee that this fight won’t bubble back up after the “multi-year extension” ends.)

The two companies haven’t explained the terms behind this deal. It’s possible that YouTube will hold a more prominent place in Roku search results—Google’s demand for such a change is (supposedly) what set this feud in motion early in 2021...

This 11th hour extension is brinksmanship at its finest!

FSU hires an AD

According to reports, it sounds like Florida State offered the Athletic Director job to Louisville's AD Vince Tyra, but when that didn't work out, they hired internally. Michael Alford has a somewhat unusual resume. I'll let this excerpt from the Sun-Sentinel explain it:

Alford served as president and CEO of Seminoles Boosters, Inc. since 2020. He has served as AD at Central Michigan (2017-20) and was a senior associate AD at Oklahoma (2012-17)...
He set a fundraising mark at Central Michigan in 2018 that included renegotiating the athletic department’s apparel contract. He also hired eight coaches during his time with the Chippewas. At Oklahoma, he oversaw the Sooner Club, which set fundraising records and was responsible for a $160 million capital campaign to renovate Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
He recently led the charge on a $100 million capital campaign at FSU, which included building a new football-operations building and a redevelopment project for Doak Campbell Stadium...
Though most outsiders have never heard of Alford, the hire is being described as "solid" and "Home run hire" by Seminole fans.

Report: Josh Gattis meeting with ACC team for head coaching position (yahoo.com; Hole)

Fresh off winning the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top college football assistant coach, it’s no surprise that Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis would be in demand. As the Wolverines gear up for a College Football Playoff semi-final, teams looking for a new head coach would logically be looking at the third-year coordinator.

While Michigan assuredly want to retain Gattis, when he was hired away from Alabama before the 2019 season, he was expected to be more of a rental, and now that he’s coming into his own, he’s starting to get schools calling.

And Thomas Jefferson’s school is calling.

While it appeared that Virginia was set to hire Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott after Bronco Mendenhall stepped down, that’s reportedly hit a snag. According to FootballScoop, Gattis is meeting with the Cavaliers about their head coaching vacancy.

Pitt football | WR Addison earns Biletnikoff Award (tribdem.com; Filipcic-Godsey)

Pittsburgh wide receiver Jordan Addison is this year’s winner of the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the best receiver in college football, regardless of position.

One of college football’s most prestigious awards, the Biletnikoff was awarded during Thursday night’s College Football Awards on ESPN.

“It feels good. Usually I’m a cool, nonchalant guy, but I can’t even hide my emotions right now,” a grinning Addison told ESPN after he was named the winner.

Addison leads the country with 17 receiving touchdowns and ranks third in the country – and first among Power Five receivers – in receiving yards with 1,479. The sophomore wide receiver has been a major part of the Panthers’ offense that is currently ranked as the third-best scoring offense in the country.

The numbers Addison posted this season give him the second-best receiving season in Pitt history, behind only Larry Fitzgerald’s 2003 season.

Addison spoke of the connection between he and quarterback Kenny Pickett.

“The offseason, when I knew he was coming back, that’s all we did, we lived on that practice field,” Addison said. “And we showed it every Saturday.”

Addison became the third Pitt player to win the Biletnikoff Award, joining Fitzgerald (2003) and Antonio Bryant (2000). Alabama and Oklahoma State receivers also have won the award three times.

Both Addison and quarterback Kenny Pickett earned first-team All-American honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Pickett became the third Pitt quarterback to earn first-team All-America honors, joining Matt Cavanaugh (1977) and Dan Marino (1981).

Almost three decades after Arturo's Decent Italian Food closed, "Arturo's 'Decent' Italian Cookbook" is now available.

A legendary Syracuse joint served ‘warm beer’ and ‘cold food.’ Of course there’s now a cookbook (PS; Cazentre)

Some restaurants bill themselves as “fine” dining. Others boast they are the “best” in town.

At the legendary Arturo’s in Eastwood, they proudly proclaimed themselves to be purveyors of “decent” Italian food.

And now, 28 years after Arturo’s Decent Italian Food closed, there’s a cookbook to showcase everything that made the place, well, ... OK.

It’s called “Arturo’s ‘Decent’ Italian Cookbook,” of course. It includes recipes like the famous Bad Breath Bonanza, a dish of steamed clams and mussels “drenched in garlic butter sauce for an odor you cannot refuse.”

There are also recipes for sauces and pasta, pizzas, sandwiches (or sangwidges) and even items that don’t seem so Italian, such as Sauerbraten, Beef Stroganoff and Shrimp Creole. (See some recipes below)

The book is the project of Brian Belge, son of the late Art “Arturo” Belge, who ran the restaurant from 1958 to 1900 in Eastwood, and then from 1990 to 1993 in Mattydale. Art Belge died in 2016 at age 83.
