Welcome to Pledge of Allegiance Day!

In 1942, Congressional legislation recognized the words of the Pledge of Allegiance. Pledge of Allegiance Day takes place on December 28, on the anniversary of the day in 1945 when an amendment was made to the 1942 legislation, "to give official congressional sanction to the pledge." Representative Herman Eberharter of Pennsylvania introduced the additional legislation.

The Pledge was written by Francis Bellamy, a socialist Baptist minister, for the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas. President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed October 12 as a day to commemorate Christopher Columbus, and stated, "Let the national flag float over every schoolhouse in the country and the exercises be such as shall impress upon our youth the patriotic duties of American citizenship." The "exercise" being referred to was the Pledge Of Allegiance, and it was on this day that it was first recited in schools.

Anae, Beck Home Run Hires for Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Entering the offseason, everyone knew there would be changes on the Syracuse football coaching staff. The question was how much change. Dino Babers made the correct decision to fire Sterlin Gilbert, putting Syracuse in the market for an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Sometimes while looking, unexpected events occur that play out in your favor. That is exactly what happened for the Orange as Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall elected to shockingly retire at the end of the season.

Suddenly, two highly respected coaches with a history of developing quarterbacks and leading potent offenses became available. Syracuse was able to convince both former Virginia offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck to come lead the Orange offense. Syracuse could not have found better coaches to fill those vacant positions.

Anae and Beck are ideal coaches to help improve the Syracuse offense that really struggled down the stretch of last season. The perfect choices to get the most out of Garrett Shrader given their history. Look at their time at BYU. The Cougars offenses averaged 494 yards and 461 yards of offense under Taysom Hill. In Anae's first year, both Hill and BYU's starting running back ran for over 1,200 yards with 17 combined rushing touchdowns. Hill also threw for over 2,900 yards with 19 passing touchdowns.

The coaching combo had similar success at Virginia with Bryce Perkins, also a running quarterback. Perkins threw for over 2,600 yards with 25 passing touchdowns while rushing for 900 with nine more scores in 2018. In 2019, Perkins threw for over 3,500 yards with 22 touchdowns while running for over 700 with 11 scores. The point is, Anae and Beck have a history of developing quarterbacks with similar skill sets as Garrett Shrader. That should excite Syracuse fans.

Syracuse Football: Why Robert Anae, Jason Beck are the right hires for SU (itlh; Fiello)

At the end of the 2021 Syracuse football season, head coach Dino Babers relieved offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert. To my knowledge, no specific reason was given but the lack of production outside of running back Sean Tucker and quarterback Garrett Shrader running the football had to contribute to the change.

Many had Coach Babers in the hot seat himself but based on his decision to hire a special teams coach and the latest hires on the offensive side, I’m left thinking Babers didn’t just grab a life preserver…he instead decided to right the whole ship on a course for a bowl game in 2022.

Babers has hired Robert Anae and Jason Beck from Virginia to help take charge of the offense, according to media reports. Both coaches became available as Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall decided to resign after six seasons there.

Why I’m excited about the new offensive coaching hires at Syracuse football.

Speculation had been rampant for a couple of weeks but the word was that the UVA coaches were awaiting a Virginia appearance in the Fenway Bowl that now has been canceled due to COVID issues in the program.

Now with these hires, along with the hire of veteran special teams coach Bob Ligashesky, this Orange fan is encouraged for the future of the program. Coach Ligashesky has an extensive resume including as a coach on the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl staff.

This move was also possibly enough to convince former Lou Groza winner and perhaps the most accurate kicker in Syracuse football history, Andre Szmyt, to return for another campaign.

And now you add in Anae and Beck to help coach Tucker, Shrader, a young receiving corps and a returning Chris Elmore, and I believe this offense could be equally balanced and as potent as their defensive counterparts.

Both coaches have experience coaching dual-threat quarterbacks (which current projected starter Shrader is considered to be) and are coming off a season where Virginia had over 4,000 yards passing, as compared to Syracuse football, which had less than 2,000.

Making this decision now will likely give this staff not only plenty of opportunities to get to know the players currently on the roster, but also to get to know and work with offensive line coordinator Mike Schmidt.

Syracuse Football: Five transfer portal players I’d love to see at SU in 2022 (itlh; Fiello)

As the Syracuse football team looks to rebuild its roster and depth for 2022, head coach Dino Babers has said he will utilize the transfer portal as well as recruiting. The team saw several players opt out including some who received playing time in 2021 but are looking for more in 2022.

The transfer portal is good and bad for teams. While it does offer players the opportunity to leave if they feel like they belong elsewhere, it also allows coaches to add players already experienced at that level to join and possibly produce right away.

So while the staff is out recruiting high school talents like the 2021 New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year, they’re also faced with recruiting current college players who can come to Syracuse and get a quality education as well as become an NFL prospect like Cody Roscoe.

So as I look at the players in the transfer portal currently, there are many I feel can contribute. I believe these five for sure would be great additions who at least at the time I’m writing this have not committed anywhere. Some may view them as long shots but I’m just saying these are five who are still available and can contribute if convinced to attend the ‘Cuse.

I’d love to see these five transfer portal players in a Syracuse football uniform.

Jared Verse – Defensive Lineman from University of Albany

When Verse initially announced his intention to transfer, I was immediately begging Syracuse football to offer him. It just so happens that I wasn’t the only one, as justifiably so he has received many offers including from SEC schools and others.

He currently has offers from Tennessee, FSU, Oklahoma, LSU, Auburn, Miami and USC, among others. And while Syracuse at this point might seem like a long shot, having faced him last season, Syracuse knows how talented he is and could help fill a position that lost a lot of experience to graduation. Verse could make an immediate impact on day one. I’d love to see him lining up alongside Caleb Okechukwu on the front line in Orange.

Ivan Pace Jr. – Linebacker from Miami (Ohio) University

While speaking about defensive playmakers and depth, adding Pace to line up along with Mikel Jones, Marlowe Wax and Stefon Thompson would help keep that pressure on quarterbacks. Pace was an All-MAC first-team linebacker who finished in the top 10 in tackles in all of college football. As of now, I don’t think Pace has a Syracuse offer but again this is just a list of players I like and think would be good additions, and Pace is that caliber of player.

With Virginia’s 2021 season officially finished — following the cancelation of the Fenway Bowl due to COVID-19 concerns — a transitionary coaching staff will finally shift. The Tony Elliott era starts now; however, his staff isn’t complete.

Two key assistant coaches from the Bronco Mendenhall’s staff — offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck — are on the move. Anae and Beck will both head north, together. The two coaches will join Dino Babers and Syracuse.

Let’s try this one again.
Syracuse will hire former Virginia assistants Robert Anae and Jason Beck to help lead offense (report) | SU football will hire 2 former Virginia assistants to help lead offense (report)
— Syracuse Football (@syrfootball) December 27, 2021

Anae left Virginia last week; Beck, however, was scheduled to call plays for UVA in the Fenway Bowl.

Syracuse fired offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, after two seasons, last month. Anae is expected to take on those duties now. Beck, along with Anae, get a lot of credit for revitalizing the quarterback position at Virginia. That process started with Kurt Benkert, flowed to the dynamic Bryce Perkins and kept on chugging with 2021 All-ACC selection Brennan Armstrong.

Of course, the thing to monitor — for both programs — will be how these coaching staff shakeups alter transfer portal and/or NFL Draft decisions.

Peach provides Pitt’s Patti first start since ‘forever ago’ – The Seattle Times (seattletimes.com; AP; Odum)

Nick Patti’s long wait for a second chance as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback is finally ending.

“Seems like forever ago,” Patti said Monday.

In the life of a college career, the gap between Patti’s starts is indeed immense.

Following the decision by Kenny Pickett to opt out and prepare for the NFL draft, Patti has been named No. 13 Pitt’s starter in Thursday night’s Peach Bowl against No. 11 Michigan State.

It will be the first start for Patti since Sept. 28, 2019 when, as a redshirt freshman, he led the Panthers to a 17-14 win over Delaware when Pickett sat out with an injury. Since then, Patti has been mostly an observer as Pickett became one of the nation’s top quarterbacks.

Finally, Patti’s patience will be rewarded. The junior will be in the spotlight as he attempts to prove he deserves to be Pitt’s starter in 2022.

“I don’t have many reps but I’m still a little bit battle-tested,” Patti said. “And I’m excited to get out there and play again.”

Patti’s limited exposure, especially this season, has made it difficult for Michigan State to prepare a defensive plan.

“It was a real deal to be able to say, OK, who is this guy?” Spartans defensive coordinator Scottie Hazelton said Monday.

Hazelton’s conclusion: “I think that you see a lot of the same things out of him that you saw out of Kenny.”

There’s another important change for Pitt on offense against Michigan State. Tight ends coach Tim Salem is serving as interim offensive coordinator after Mark Whipple left for the same job at Nebraska.

Whipple conferred directly with Pickett on the sideline during games. Salem will call the plays from the press box.

Patti’s performance will be the most important factor in determining if the Panthers realize their goal of a smooth transition on offense. Salem said he has confidence Patti is prepared for the opportunity.

ACC Teams Keep Dropping Out with COVID...Can NC State Go? - Pack Insider (packinsider.com; Staff)

These last two weeks have been long ones for WPN. We thought that other sports could hold us over until the Holiday Bowl.

But it hasn’t been pretty.

WBB got upset by Georgia, MBB upset everyone off the court and Wrestling got screwed by a no-pin call. Now Covid is wrecking teams from the NHL, to NFL, to college.

ACC can’t get on the field

The first domino was Texas A&M dipped out of their Gator Bowl matchup with Wake Forest. Rutgers (who is 5-7 and should be handled, you’re welcome WF) is filling in. Boston College and UVA both dropped out, and thus, their bowls were canceled. Miami is a no go in the Sun Bowl, but that Bowl committee is trying to find a backup plan in time.

All this to say, the ACC has a 11-game bowl losing streak, and mind as well make it 14 with the latest mess.

You can blame the Omicron variant being so easily spreadable. You can blame the ACC and NCAA for sitting back for the last 18-months, not doing a damn thing about COVID protocols. There is probably other avenues for anger, in general, but we’ll leave those alone for now.

UCLA struggles of late

So far – and cannot emphasize enough how badly of a non-jinx this is meant to be – UCLA has been the one losing players.

Qwuantrezz Knight is by a mile their biggest.

The Bruins’ DB is team leader in tackles and tackles for loss. Add in Otito Ogbonnia, who previously declared for the NFL draft and will skip the Holiday Bowl, UCLA is down 13.5 TFL players. There have been a handful of other players that will be inactive for UCLA because of COVID. While most are purely backups, having any positives cases at this point makes you worry about others. Guard Mafi, DL Manoa and running back Fernea are all out.

UCLA coach Chip Kelly said the team plans to test one more time Monday evening. Fingers crossed.

Huge Game for this State Program

We’ve talked about it before and will mention it again over the next 24-hours; This game for State football program is HUGE.

Kelly mention it’s UCLA’s Super Bowl…the same could be said for State.

The second double-digit win total in school history. An absolute momentum push for this program into next year, with a whole lotta players coming back. Further proof, State is ready to make the next step.

BYU and Liberty drop future games with UVa (RX; HM)

BYU and Liberty drop future games with UVa

The Virginia Cavaliers just gave their new Head Football Coach some scheduling flexibility.

A 2-game series b/w Virginia & BYU (2023 & ’25) as well 4-game series b/w Virginia & Liberty (2023, ’27, ’29 & ’30) have been mutually canceled by the respective schools, @FBSchedules reports
— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) December 27, 2021
Before you jump to the conclusion that it was the Wahoos who cancelled these games, let me remind you that both independents are about to begin conference play in a few years: BYU is joining the Big XII and Liberty is joining C-USA. That will necessitate that both teams cancel some games to free up their schedules, and I'm sure UVa had no problem with these cancellations.

By the way, BYU also has NC State, Virginia Tech, and Miami on their future schedules. Liberty has games booked with Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Duke. Stay tuned.

Here are the viewership numbers for the last 10 ACC Championship Games:

What this tells me...
To get good TV numbers, you need two things:

  1. At least one top five team
  2. The belief that their opponent might be able to defeat them
If both teams are lowly-ranked (2021), or if it's a total mismatch (2012, 2018, 2019), you won't crack 5 million viewers. On the other hand, if both teams are highly-ranked and the matchup is competitive (2014, 2020), you can get over 10 million. (2015 also met the criteria, but the ratings fell just short of 8 million - still very good, though).

CNY’s best restaurants of 2021: Our food writers pick their favorites (PS; $; Miller)

Our food writers (Jared Paventi, Jane Woodman and Charlie Miller) visited more than 100 Central New York restaurants this year. Some were first looks at new businesses, some were visits to well-known area favorites, some were stops at restaurants that have been around for awhile that many had overlooked.

Here are some of our favorites from 2021, in no particular order.

Otro Cinco

Address:
206 S Warren St., Syracuse; (315) 422-6876

From Jared Paventi: Santa read my Christmas list and finally brought a Spanish menu to Syracuse (I wish for weird things.). Otro Cinco made paellas since the day it opened, but a June 2021 menu change brought together the regional flavors of Spain. It’s an elegant approach to the cuisine, with a large tapas menu intended for sharing, and a smaller lineup of entrees. This is a social dining experience. Sure, you can have an intimate dinner for two, but it’s a menu built best for groups of four or more.

Dinner at Dano's Heuriger, Lodi, N.Y.

Inside the dining room at Dano's Heuriger, Lodi, N.Y.

Dano’s Heuriger

Address:
9564 Route 414, Lodi; (607) 582-7555

From Jared Paventi: Our favorite experience of 2021 was Dano’s Heuriger in Lodi. Perched on a hill overlooking Seneca Lake, Dano’s is an Austrian-inspired wine bistro with flavors of Central Europe. True goulashes, not the Americanized version our mothers punished us with as children. Housemade wursts, spreads and dips. It’s a menu constructed around the foods and eating styles of Austrians and Germans. From cocktails to coffee, it was perfect.

La Bamba MTZ / El Rincon Mexicano

La Bamba MTZ Address:
139 S. Peterboro St., Canastota; (315) 875-5003
El Rincon Mexicano Address: 6974 Ridge Road, Sodus; (315) 483-4199

From Jared Paventi: Once you eat at the taquerias, comedors and fondas in the west and southwest, the Americanized Mexican restaurants of the Northeast just won’t do. With apologies to Syracuse’s entries into that space, give me La Bamba MTZ and El Rincon Mexicano. It’s unfair to lump these together, but these two restaurants have so much in common. Both focus on regional Mexican dishes without diluting their flavors for marketability. The families in these kitchens cook their recipes as they know them, with earthy moles, sinus-clearing heat, and housemade chorizo and tortillas. There are Mexican restaurants and Mexican-American restaurants. These two are the area’s only Mexican restaurants and they should not be missed.

Dinner at Hazelnut Kitchen, Trumansburg, N.Y.

Grilled chicken with broccoli, white corn grits and balsamic-roasted strawberries at Hazelnut Kitchen, Trumansburg, N.Y.

Hazelnut Kitchen

Address:
53 E. Main St., Trumansburg; (607) 387-4433.

From Jared Paventi: This quirky little spot in Trumansburg lets its menu be driven by seasonal produce. Strawberries were at their peak during our visit and appeared in the appetizers, entrées and desserts. Snap peas, chard and cherries were everywhere on the menu, reflecting their availability from local farms. We opted for a chef’s choice entree and were rewarded with a short rib ragu with peas and cherries over housemade bucatini pasta. Every detail at Hazelnut Kitchen is thought out and meticulously planned.
