Monday Musings: Impact of Cam Goode's Decision on Syracuse Football (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has looked for an experienced defensive lineman to add to its group for next season through the transfer portal. The Orange has even offered some players at the position, but has struck out thus far. The latest to make a decision was Central Florida transfer defensive lineman Cam Goode. Goode picked Michigan over Syracuse and Vanderbilt.

Where does Syracuse go from here? There are three options in front of the Orange.

1. Continue to Explore Portal Options

Players can enter the portal through May 1st in order to be eligible for next season. Syracuse will continue to monitor those currently in the portal and those who enter between now and that deadline. There are a lot of players in the portal, so chances are Syracuse will be able to find one. There is an attractive pitch from the Orange as well. Come play for a defense that has been productive rushing the passer in the 3-3-5 with an opportunity to earn a starting spot at the power five level. Finding someone who fits the bill of experienced and good enough to start remains the top option.

2. Look at JUCO Recruits

Another option to find an experienced player to add to the roster is through the junior college level. Syracuse has brought in JUCO players in the past, with mixed results. It certainly is an option that could be explored if the portal is not fruitful. With recruiting the portal, JUCO can be overlooked and there is the potential to find an impactful player there.

3. Roll With What You Got

Syracuse has recruited well along the defensive line over the last few cycles and really likes its young talent. If the Orange is unable to find someone through the portal or at the junior college ranks, moving forward with the young players would be the next, and final, option. While that would leave Syracuse inexperienced, it would also allow the Orange to further develop young talent. That could lead to good things down the road.

Syracuse Football's NFL Draft Preview And Offseason Priority List. Plus, Syracuse Basketball Might Need A Founding Father Class (audacy.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse football fans might want to consider buying an NFL jersey for one of their own. The only question is, which one?Brad Klein explains. Plus, Dino Babers and Syracuse football have a lot to cover this offseason. Find out what the top of the priority list should look like. Syracuse basketball is already turning heads on the recruiting trail for 2024, but how does that relate to 2022's class?

Syracuse football: Andre Szmyt returns for another ride (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

On Senior Day last year, it seemed that the Syracuse Orange were losing one of the team’s staples over the last four years. Longtime kicker Andre Szmyt had announced he would not be returning to the team for a fifth season. However, Szmyt changed his mind in the offseason and decided to stay on as a Redshirt Senior.

“I kind of knew where I stood in the eyes of NFL scouts,” Szmyt said during spring training camp. “It’s not ideally what I wanted, and I know what I can achieve, so I decided I’m going to come back for another round.”

Szmyt holds several SU records, including most overall points by a kicker (348), number of field goals made (65), and highest field goal percentage (.823). The remarkable thing is that he didn’t even come to Syracuse on a scholarship - that came later during his freshman season. In 2018, Szmyt took the nation by storm, drilling 30 FGs and taking home the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker. Those 30 kicks were the most in Orange history and the second most in D1 FBS football, trailing Billy Bennett by only one.

The unanimous first-team All American kept up production for the team the next two seasons, but he had a massive drop off last year, going only 9-14 on FG tries.

“(I want) to go back to the basics, back to what I did in my freshman year,” Szmyt said “It’s just kind of like hitting the restart button.”

Syracuse Football: Orange offers elite freshman All-American quarterback (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football coaches have offered a scholarship to phenomenal high-school quarterback Stone Saunders, he recently said on Twitter.

The 6-foot-2 Saunders is a member of the 2025 recruiting cycle and put forth a ridiculous freshman campaign a few months back for Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pa.

Saunders, who already boasts at least 10 scholarship offers, compiled 3,037 passing yards with 46 touchdowns, and only five interceptions, in the 2021 season for Bishop McDevitt High School, according to media reports and recruiting services.

#AGTG Blessed to receive a offer from the University of Syracuse! Thanks @CoachBabersCuse @CuseFootball @CoachWeachter for this opportunity! pic.twitter.com/4QK9KcN1MT
— Stone Saunders (@Stone_Saunders8) April 21, 2022

For those efforts, Saunders has picked up all kinds of awards and honors for his freshman stanza. While the competition for his services will prove significant, I credit Orange coaches for giving it a shot here.

Syracuse football recently entered the mix for stellar quarterback Stone Saunders.

Saunders was a member of the freshman All-America second team in the 2021 term, according to an article by Stephen Spiewak of MaxPreps.

Additionally, he was named to the Pennsylvania Football Writers’ Class 4A All-State squad, per an article from Eric Epler on pennlive.com.

As a freshman, Saunders helped lead his team to a 12-2 overall record in 2021, and Bishop McDevitt High School advanced to the PIAA Class 4A championship contest, where it lost 34-27 to Aliquippa High School out of Aliquippa, Pa., according to reports.

Obviously, it’s really early on in Saunders’ recruitment, but he’s already attracting a lot of attention on a national scale.

Per his Twitter page, recruiting services and reports, besides the ‘Cuse, Saunders’ other offers include from Michigan, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M, Louisville, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota and Bowling Green.

College football recruiting: ACC freshman sparking excitement for every team (247sports.com; Howe)

Spring football came and went with most teams playing their annual spring game over the last two weekends. With that in mind, it's time to take a look at the freshman that every Atlantic Coast Conference team is most excited about entering the 2022 season.

Most of the players listed are each team's top recruit in the 2022 cycle. The prospects range from three to five-star recruits with the majority being four-star players.

One of the most intriguing players on the list is Clemson freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik. Although he will not enter the season as the team's starter behind D.J. Uiagalelei, Clemson fans are eager to see the skill set of the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the Class of 2022.

Check out each team's most exciting freshman for the 2022 season below.

DUKE

Anthony is a 247Sports Composite four-star recruit out of Durham (N.C.) C.E. Jordan. He is also the No. 309-ranked overall player, the No. 41-ranked defensive lineman and the No. 10-ranked player in the North Carolina in the recruiting Class of 2022. Anthony is Duke's lone four-star prospect in the Class of 2022. New Duke head Coach Mike Elko fought to keep the class together after taking over the job just days before the cycle's first National Signing Day, scrambling to watch film and hold Zoom calls with prospects and players that will make up the first group of players to take the field at Duke under his watch that did not play for the previous regime. Athletics Director Nina King and Associate Head Coach Trooper Taylor, the lone carryover from the previous coaching staff, also did work to keep the sixteen commitments who signed with the Blue Devils in December in the fold.

GEORGIA TECH

Antonio Martin, RB
Martin is a 247Sports Composite four-star recruit out of Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes. He is also the No. 313-ranked overall player, the No. 28-ranked running back and the No. 27-ranked player in the state of Ga. Former Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs has transferred to Alabama, leaving a big vacancy to fill. The Yellow Jackets are doing everything they can to replace one of the ACC's top backs. The four-star signee has enrolled early, and is already working towards being someone Georgia Tech can lean on.

BOSTON COLLEGE

The Eagles' class is highlighted by safety Sione Hala, a 247Sports Composite four-star recruit out of Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco. Hala is also the No. 353-ranked overall player and the No. 30-ranked safety in the recruiting Class of 2022.

SYRACUSE

Francois Nolton, DL
Syracuse's highest-ranked signee is three-star defensive lineman Francois Nolton out of Miami (Fla.) Edison. Nolton is the No. 646-ranked overall player and the No. 91-ranked defensive lineman in the recruiting Class of 2022.

LOUISVILLE

Popeye Williams, DE
Williams is a 247Sports Composite four-star recruit out of Westfield (Ind.). Williams is also the No. 178-ranked overall prospect and the No. 17-ranked edge rusher in the recruiting Class of 2022. 247Sports national recruiting analyst Allen Trieu projects Williams as a power-five starter and gave him a pro comparison to Hassan Reddick.

"Twitchy edge-rusher with some explosive qualities," Trieu wrote. "Seems very well schooled also. He has a subtle dip which makes it tough for offensive linemen to get a clean punch on him. His lateral agility also makes it tough for blockers to get their hands on him in pass protection. He does a nice job with his hands. He is quick and assertive with those. He shows good closing ability shot short-area explosion as well. He plays with good motor. The main concern with him would be size. He is over 6-foot-2 and around 225 pounds. He will have to show he can anchor in against the run against bigger college offensive linemen. He is a really good player and has some good athletic qualities. He is going to be able to rush the passer and based on his technique and work ethic, has a great chance to be more than that. 4-3 WDE or may be a 3-4 OLB."

College football QB watch: Heisman winner, C.J. Stroud, trio of ACC passers will dominate (usatoday.com; Myerberg)

By this time next year, NFL teams at the very top of the draft may be weighing the merits of Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, two potential franchise passers set to dominate the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2022.

A list of the nation's top quarterbacks for this coming season begins with the second-year starters headlining two of the best teams in the country.

Among those coming in behind Young and Stroud are new Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams, Tennessee's Hendon Hooker and a trio of starters in the ACC: Wake Forest's Sam Hartman, Miami's Tyler Van Dyke and North Carolina State's Devin Leary.

While there is a possible underdog lurking just off the list — maybe it's Utah's Cameron Rising or South Carolina's Spencer Rattler — these quarterbacks represent the best the FBS has to offer.

1. Bryce Young, Alabama

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner will look to gobble up another shelf full of postseason hardware. He'll need to be better protected, however, and last year's offensive line was atypically abysmal in pass protection — and that was with all-everything tackle Evan Neal manning the blind side. A banner 2021 season ended with a thud against Georgia, possibly giving Young the motivation he needs to take his game to an even more impressive level.

2. C.J. Stroud, Ohio State

With Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave off to the NFL, with both possibly landing in the first round of the draft, Stroud won't have the luxury of throwing to the country's best receiver corps. He'll have to settle for just one of the best, with a group headlined by superstar Jaxson Smith-Njigba and holdovers Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jayden Ballard and Julian Fleming. His numbers shouldn't drop after a hugely productive redshirt freshman season.

3. Sam Hartman, Wake Forest

A fifth-year junior with the remaining eligibility to make a run at the FBS career yardage record, Hartman is the centerpiece of an offense that will again rank among the nation's best. With the Demon Deacons expected to remain in the Top 25 and contend for the New Year's Six, look for Hartman to build on his terrific 2021 season — he went for 4,228 yards and 39 scores — and be a real factor in the race for national accolades.

4. Tyler Van Dyke, Miami (Fla.)

Only a sophomore, Van Dyke has brought swagger back to a program that has failed to develop this sort of big-time passer in decades. After tossing three interceptions in a painful loss to North Carolina on Oct. 16, Van Dyke threw for at least 316 yards and three scores in each of his final six games and finished second nationally among FBS freshmen with 25 touchdowns overall.

5. Caleb Williams, Southern California

His familiarity with coach Lincoln Riley's system should help Williams make a seamless transition into the Pac-12. While the talent is off the charts, keep in mind that he's only a sophomore with fairly limited starting experience — Williams barely played at all until last October and had a dreadful November before rebounding in Oklahoma's bowl win against Oregon. When talent meets experience, however, there will be no better quarterback in the conference.

6. Grayson McCall, Coastal Carolina

Bringing back McCall in 2022 will make Coastal one of the Group of Five teams to beat in the race for the automatic bid into the New Year's Six bowl slate. Keeping him healthy is a priority: McCall missed two games last season, including one of the Chanticleers' two losses, but was productive on a record-setting scale when in the lineup — he averaged at least 10.5 yards per throw in all but one start and finished with the best single-season efficiency rating (207.7) in FBS history.

7. Devin Leary, North Carolina State

Leary is the face of a team soaring up preseason Top 25 lists as the biggest threat to Clemson in the ACC. He was overshadowed last season by Hartman and former Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett and only earned honorable mention all-conference honors after throwing 35 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Surrounded by an even better team and with another year of experience, Leary sits on the periphery of the Heisman race.

8. Jake Haener, Fresno State

Haener will spend his final season at Fresno State after briefly popping into the transfer portal in December. Rather than follow Kalen DeBoer to Washington, the senior will reconnect with former and current Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford, who initially recruited Haener into the program. Given Tedford's track record with the position, Haener has the potential to land in the first round of next year's draft.

9. Hendon Hooker, Tennessee

The biggest success story in last year's SEC, Hooker finished with 31 touchdowns against just three interceptions after opening the season as the backup. The former Virginia Tech transfer also averaged 9.7 yards per throw, second-best in the conference, and finished third nationally in efficiency rating.

10. Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma

After playing in just three games last season due to a broken collarbone, Gabriel reunites with former Central Florida coordinator Jeff Lebby as the Sooners' replacement for Williams. Gabriel has thrown for 70 touchdowns against only 14 interceptions in 26 career games, with multiple scores in all but four appearances. He's been even better against Power Five competition, with 13 touchdowns and an average of 9.1 yards per attempt in four such games in his three years with the Knights.

2022 Ranking of P5 Programs

Stadium Talk has Ranked "Every Power Five Conference Program". Here are the ACC teams:
What, exactly, did they try to rank here?

This is where all 65 Power Five football programs stand in terms of overall program strength, with an emphasis placed on how the programs have done since the start of the College Football Playoff in 2014.

So not necessarily how well they will finish this year, more of a "state of the program" thing? Got it. With that in mind, here's how the ACC teams were ranked - along with a few others of interest...
__________
60. Syracuse (ACC)
The Syracuse football program has fallen on hard times in recent years. Head coach Dino Babers has somehow kept his job despite three consecutive losing seasons following a 10-3 record in 2018. That includes a 1-10 campaign in 2020.

59. Duke (ACC)
We get it. Football at Duke is never going to be a big deal. From what we can tell, 15th-year head coach David Cutcliffe keeps his job by posting a winning record roughly every four years.
Here's a new slogan for the Blue Devils — "Duke Football: It Is What It Is."

56. Georgia Tech (ACC)
The Paul Johnson era at Georgia Tech probably seems like a dream to fans of the Yellow Jackets. Johnson had seven winning seasons in 11 years in Atlanta before he stepped down before the 2019 season.
Johnson's replacement, Geoff Collins, has carved out a very specific niche in the three seasons since. He's gone 3-9, 3-7 and 3-9. That's the type of consistency you don't want.

53. Boston College (ACC)
Boston College's program has been a study in mediocrity for the last decade. After a disastrous 2-10 season in 2012, the Eagles have finished either one game above or below .500 six times and finished .500 in 2021, when they went 6-6.
If you want to look a little deeper, you have to go back to former quarterback Doug Flutie's Heisman Trophy-winning season in 1984 to find Boston College playing in any bowl game of significance, when they won the Cotton Bowl.

50. Wake Forest (ACC)
Wake Forest went 11-3 in 2021 and finished in the Top 25 in the final AP Poll for the first time since 2006. It will take a little more than that to move them up this list, but it's worth pointing out that the Demon Deacons definitely seem like a team on the way up.
One big reason for Wake Forest's recent success is stability. Head coach Dave Clawson is headed into his ninth season and has led his program to six consecutive bowl games.

Wake Forest has no College Football Hall of Famers. The late Brian Picolo was named ACC Athlete of the Year in 1965.

How Many Eyeballs?

How many sets of eyeballs does each team bring?

From "Which college football programs bring in the most TV viewers?" posted on medium.com:*

The numbers next to each school indicate the average number of viewers per week from 2015–19. Streaming numbers are included when available.
Conference championship games and bowl games are not included in these numbers. Games that do not have available data were counted as zero.

I took their data, sorted by viewers per game, split each power conference into its own column, and grouped by teams over 3 million, 2 to 3 million, 1 to 2 million, 500k to 1 million, and under 500k:

The top two in the ACC are pretty clear: Clemson and Florida State. Their viewership numbers are comparable to teams like OU, Penn State, Florida, Wisconsin, and Texas.
Keep in mind, too, that the time period of this report includes the Willie Taggart years in Tallahassee (but not Mike Norvell's). Meanwhile, the Tigers were in the playoffs every single year from 2015 through 2019, winning two national titles and playing for two more. So don't be quick to conclude that Clemson is more valuable than FSU - they are both valuable, without a doubt.

The 500k to 1M section is half expansion teams, half original teams. While not overly impressive, these teams provide decent filler, especially for conference network slots. I find it interesting that many of the teams which changed leagues this century - Utah, Pitt, Syracuse, Maryland, Missouri, Colorado, and now BYU, Houston, and UCF - all fall into this category.

The Next ACC Overlord? (RX; HM)

The Next ACC Overlord?

Who will replace Clemson when they are no longer on top? Josh Pate was asked that question on his "Late Kick" podcast, and I agree with his initial reaction: Pitt is the defending champion, not Clemson! That said, a lot of people assume that the Tigers will reclaim their ACC throne - or will there be a usurper?

(Late Kick Cut) Josh Pate On
Clemson's Replacement In ACC

College Football season is still a few months away, but on Late Kick Live Ep 254 Josh Pate responded to a viewer question about what would happen if Clemson and Dabo Swinney failed to get things back on track this year. Which team in the ACC could be poised to overtake the Tigers as the premiere team in the conference if that does happen? Will North Carolina emerge under Mack Brown? What about the shot Mario Cristobal has at Miami or even Pat Narduzzi at Pitt? Could we see a surprise emerge in the state of Virginia down the road as UVA and Va Tech both install new staffs? How do you see the ACC shaking out over the next few years? Do you believe in Clemson this season?.

The Ethan Allen store in April 2021, just before it closed.

Developer proposes new use for closed retail furniture store in DeWitt (PS; $; Doran)

A year after it closed, a developer is proposing a new use for the former Ethan Allen furniture store off of East Genesee Street in DeWitt.

The 25,400-square-foot former furniture store would be converted into space for two to four retail tenants, according to the proposal submitted to the town of DeWitt and Onondaga County planning boards.

Matthew Lester of Caliber Brokerage, who is representing developer Ray Trotta, said they anticipate higher-end retail tenants in the renovated building. This would include jewelry, apparel, and some smaller spaces for possibly financial institutions, he said.

The proposal is under review by town of DeWitt planners. The building, on 2.5 acres, has been for sale for $2 million.
