Welcome to Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War. The day is a minor, regional holiday in Mexico, being mainly celebrated in the state of Puebla where the city of Puebla is the capital. Military parades, speeches, and reenactments of the battle are held there. It is also celebrated in Veracruz and Mexico City, but in many other places of Mexico, May 5th is no different than any other day.

It is more widely celebrated in the United States, where it commemorates the battle, and celebrates Mexican culture and heritage. It is most celebrated in areas with large Mexican-American populations. The day began gaining popularity in the 1940s, during the beginnings of the Chicano movement. Mexican immigrants used the day to show their pride in their Mexican heritage. Awareness of the holiday was further raised in the 1960s by Chicano activists. Today it is celebrated by many in the country, regardless of their ethnic background. Parades, parties, and festivals are part of the day. These events usually include mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing, and traditional Mexican foods. The largest festivals in the country are held in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.

Penn State Football Schedules Home and Home Series with Syracuse (blackshoediaries.com; Slanina)

Per the Syracuse Football Twitter account, the Nittany Lions and Orange will be meeting for a home-and-home series in 2027 and 2028.

Syracuse has scheduled a home-and-home series with Penn State, the Orange's second-most frequently played opponent in program history.

Details: Syracuse and Penn State Renew Series - Syracuse University Athletics pic.twitter.com/WPq5jPvm2U
— Syracuse Football (@CuseFootball) May 4, 2022
The 2027 game will be held on Sept. 4 in State College, while Penn State will travel to Syracuse on Sept. 9 in 2028.

The last game between the two programs was in week one of 2013, when Penn State prevailed 23-17. Christian Hackenberg, then a true freshman, had touchdown passes of 51 and 54 yards to help give Penn State the edge. The last trip to Syracuse led to a 55-13 thrashing of the Orange in 2008, which would end with Penn State as Big Ten champs.

Penn State holds 43-23-5 advantage in the series, which dates back to 1922. That game ended in a 0-0 tie at the Polo Grounds.

The Nittany Lions have out-of-conference dates also lined up with Delaware and Temple in 2027, There are no other games currently on the 2028 schedule.

Can Syracuse football shore up the interior before summer? (TNIAAM; Wall)

We haven’t had much to talk about related to Syracuse Orange football since the spring game. Sometimes the quiet is good as we haven’t heard much about injuries or any other transfers. On the other hand, Syracuse has major questions on both lines and we haven’t seen any new singings on the offensive or defensive line.

The defensive line would certainly appear to be the biggest priority as the Orange are looking to replace Kingsley Jonathan, Cody Roscoe, Josh Black and McKinley Williams. There was positive news throughout spring practice about the development of Steve Linton and Caleb Okechukwu and physically Jatius Geer and Francois Nolton look as though they could contribute in the Fall. However the position is inexperienced and with a solid back eight for Tony White, the front three has to be ready to do their part.

We know that the Orange tried to get Albany’s Jared Verse who went to Florida State and were also after Cam Goode from UCF before he committed to Michigan. Will they find another player from the portal with the start of summer school approaching? If not could we end up seeing more of Chris Elmore on defense next Fall, and if so how might that impact the running game?

On offense Dino Babers mentioned throughout the spring that he wanted to find one more veteran offensive lineman to add to roster-preferably someone who could play center. Syracuse has a couple of internal options at the spot but we know the line has struggled so there could be an upgrade still out there.

Opponent Analysis: Wagner Seahawks — 2022 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Sears)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team opponent preview each week over the spring/summer. This week, we’re previewing Syracuse’s matchup with Wagner on Oct. 1 with their major storylines.

TOUGH START FOR TOM MASELLA

Tom Masella is going into his third year as the head coach at Wagner, and currently sports an 0-13 record (thanks to a Covid-shortened 2020 season). Masella has bounced around the FCS for his career, his most prominent stops being head coaching stints in Central Connecticut and Fordham University.

Masella sits in the Wagner Football Hall of Fame thanks to his days as a player there in the early 80’s, but his return as head coach hasn’t been as smooth and the Seahawks have yet to collect their first win in his tenure.

Masella has a defensive background with multiple defensive coordinator stops on his resume, but it has yet to culminate as the Seahawks have suffered multiple blowout losses over the last 2 years, the most recent a 44-0 loss to Duquesne to close out last year.

PROMISING MID-YEAR TRANSFERS

There’s not much talent to speak of on the current Wagner roster, but Masella hopes to change that with some incoming transfers that show promise. Lance DeSorbo is a 6’4”, 270 pound defensive lineman that has size to be competitive against tougher competition, and Arnold Djanie is a 6’4”, 235 pound outside linebacker sporting the kind of size you typically don’t see at that position on most FCS teams.

Fellow OLB Hunter Abbot stands an impressive 6’5” and at 225 pounds gives the Seahawks quite an imposing linebacker duo when they’re both on the field.

Incoming quarterback Nick Kargman is a local kid from nearby New Jersey and stands 6’3”, though at a slight 190 pounds, but will certainly appreciate his new tight end transfer from Yale, D. Major Roman who measures in at 6’6” and 245 pounds. Add to that incoming defensive back Roberto Auguste- 6’1”, 200 pounds- and it’s easy to see that Masella is prioritizing size in order to be more competitive in 2022.

We're #1! - The Story of 1990 ACC Football

Kansas State at Syracuse

Taking a look at our ACC vs Big 12 Sim Challenge on NCAA Football 23. (NCAA Football 14 with updated rosters for the 2022 college football season)

It’s May which means we can start prepping for the College Football season. Spring practice is over so the transfer market should be set.

Let’s start by taking a look at a couple Post-Spring Top 25 rankings.

College football rankings: Alabama, Ohio State lead post-spring top 25 ahead of 2022 season

College football Top 25 rankings: 247Sports' post-spring poll for 2022

There’s a lot of variation between the two post-spring polls which means things are pretty wide open after the top 3.

Links, News and Rumors 2022-05-05

From AP: 'Momentum' For Dumping Yearly Scholarship Limits In Football.

College football coaches are pushing for changes to NCAA rules to help stabilize rosters depleted by transfers.
The proposals would lift the yearly cap on how many players a school can sign and create designated windows in which a player must enter the transfer portal and retain immediate eligibility...
The coaches' proposal would scrap the current cap that limits schools to signing 25 players per year. Those players can be either high school recruits or transfers. The overall scholarship cap of 85 would remain in place.
...players transferring out can leave rosters well short of 85 scholarship players if only 25 can be signed in a single year [the current rule].

If I understand my college football history, the annual limit was put in place after Pitt won the 1976 National Championship using a large signing class which "grew up" together. That team included RB Tony Dorsett and QB Matt Cavanaugh.

Back in the day, this game used to be pretty big...
From FBSchedules: Penn State, Syracuse schedule home-and-home football series for 2027, 2028

Penn State will host Syracuse at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa., on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2027. The series will conclude with the Nittany Lions traveling to face the Orange at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2028.

Nice to see these former "Eastern Independents" keeping the series going.

NCAA Rule Change for CCGs Under Consideration (RX; HM)

NCAA Rule Change for CCGs Under Consideration

File this under "about time"... (note: bold and italics are all mine):

Noncontroversial Legislation – Amend Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) annual contest for conference championship exemption legislation.
(1) Recommendation. The Football Oversight Committee recommends that the NCAA Division I Council adopt noncontroversial legislation to remove the FBS requirements that must be met to annually exempt one conference championship contest. This will provide discretion to each FBS conference to determine the method for identifying the participants in its conference championship game.
(2) Effective date. Immediate.
(3) Rationale. Football is the only sport that has requirements that must be satisfied to exempt a conference championship game from the participating institutions' maximum number of contests. Eliminating the FBS round-robin, regular-season requirement for exempting the conference championship game would permit each FBS conference to determine its own conference championship selection criteria.
(4) Estimated budget impact. Varied, depending on any schedule changes made in response to this change.
(5) Student-athlete impact. None.

There it is - divisionless scheduling is being officially recommended for, not just the ACC, but the entire FBS. What we've been saying for years is finally under consideration.

What does this mean for the ACC?

Simply put, more Clemson vs. Miami, Florida State vs. Georgia Tech, Duke vs. NC State, UNC vs. Wake Forest, Louisville vs. Virginia Tech, Syracuse vs. Virginia and Pitt vs. Boston College. Less Boston College vs. Wake Forest, Syracuse vs. Clemson, Virginia Tech vs. Duke, etc.

I'm going out on a short, fat limb when I assume you guys are excited about playing Penn State, right?

How do you guys feel about the prospect of divisionless scheduling? PRO: play every team in the ACC twice every four years! CON: only 3 annual games (well, that's a PRO for some!)

All of the above

I think we should play PSU at least twice a decade.

I'd love divisionless scheduling

Agree with Mark.

Losing almost all our games against traditional rivals has made joining the ACC a tough pill for many SU fans to swallow.

We need to play teams like Penn State, WVU, Maryland and even Rutgers regularly OOC to help us recruit in the Northeast and make it easier on the fan base to travel to drivable venues.

Really like divisionless scheduling. Getting stuck playing Louisville every season has been awful. We have nothing in common with them. We play two of the ACC schools we had good rivalries with in the BE (Miami and VT) once every 6 years.

And of course, we play in one of the toughest divisions in college football. The Atlantic division is loaded with good programs. No easy wins there. Getting a break from playing Atlantic teams every year to play the weak sisters of the Coastal more will really help make it easier for Syracuse to go to bowl games.

Can't wait. Just make sure UL is not one of our 3 annual games and we will be happy.

I agree we should play West Virginia, Maryland, and Rutgers, Connecticut, Army, and Navy. That's enough eastern teams, we don't need to play Penn St. Paterno ruined eastern football so let them play the big ten. They aren't an Eastern team anymore.
