Welcome to Kraken Day!

Kraken Day, also known as Myths and Legends Day, is part of International Cephalopod Awareness Days, or Cephalopod Awareness Week, which takes place from October 8-12 each year. Since octopuses have eight arms and squid have eight arms and two tentacles, the holiday week begins on the eighth day of the tenth month. Cephalopods are a class of marine invertebrates. Related to snails and clams, they have arms and tentacles, three hearts, large brains, and blue blood. Today we celebrate cephalopods of myth and legend, especially krakens.

Make the most of Homecoming Weekend with our latest travel tips and recommendations for the Triangle. It was moments after N.C. State’s 19-17 win Saturday over Florida State and Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren was being interviewed on the field by Kelsey Riggs of the ACC Network.

As Doeren glanced about Carter-Finley Stadium and a celebration in full flight among the players, students and fans, he spoke of his pride in his team’s comeback in the second half and broke into a smile when asked about quarterback Jack Chambers.

“How about Jack Chambers?” Doeren said. “I mean, unbelievable. He’ll be a fan favorite forever now, right? Nobody knew him. They’re going to know him now.”

It was Chambers, the graduate transfer from Charleston Southern, who came in Saturday after starter Devin Leary was leveled and injured in the third quarter trying to pass. Leary, his arm in a sling, would later return to the sideline as Chambers led three scoring drives — all ending in Christopher Dunn field goals — as the Pack squeezed out the ACC win.

While most of Doeren’s update on Leary was positive Monday, the coach saying no surgery would be needed and Leary should return this season, it could be Chambers at QB this week as the No. 15 Wolfpack travels to No. 18 Syracuse for another Atlantic Division game. That would make freshman MJ Morris the backup quarterback and Ben Finley the No. 3 QB.

As for the offensive game plan ...

Chambers attempted just one pass Saturday and it was incomplete — the only Wolfpack completion after Leary went out was from slotback Thayer Thomas to Chambers on a trick play that lost yardage. Chambers is 6-of-14 passing for 48 yards this season, nearly all against Charleston Southern in the Pack’s second game.

Dino Babers discusses bye week, Devin Leary injury ahead of No. 15 NC State (DO; Alandt)

Syracuse watched from afar as three top-25 teams fell on Saturday, allowing it to jump up four spots to No. 18 in the AP poll. Prior to the Orange’s game against Virginia, head coach Dino Babers said he was happy about the No. 25 ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but wanted to break into the top 20. That honor came on Sunday afternoon as well, a ranking that Babers said was “deserved” following SU’s first 5-0 start since 1987.

“Now we have to go out and prove that we deserve the faith that everybody is putting in us,” Babers said.

The Orange welcome their first ranked opponent — No. 15 NC State — to the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday. It’s the first time two ranked opponents will play in Syracuse since the opening game of the 1998 season. The two squads squared off last year in Raleigh, North Carolina, but Syracuse fell 41-17 after a dominant, 300-yard passing game from quarterback Devin Leary.

The two teams know each other well, Babers said. He faced off against Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren when he was at Northern Illinois and Babers coached Bowling Green.

A sixth straight win would mark its best start since that 1987 season, a season that ended with an 11-0-1 record, and would mark SU’s first win over a ranked opponent since it beat the Wolfpack, then-No. 22, in 2018.

Bye week

When Babers first saw the 2022 schedule, he was unhappy with the placement of the bye week. But after Syracuse went undefeated in its first five games, Babers said the weekend off came at a near-perfect time. Not quite an ‘A’, but ‘A-‘ timing for a team with a three-week stretch that features two top-25 teams and Notre Dame, whom the Orange haven’t beaten since 2008, ahead of them.

Babers said Syracuse is at a point where it needed to heal and allowing the team to rest or go home for a few days was a “pat on the back.”

“The main thing coming out of the bye for me is two things: You want to come back as healthy as you can, and we want to come back as fresh as we can,” Babers said.

The Orange just need to make sure they’re not “stale” against NC State. Babers’ teams have been overcome by opponents coming out of bye weeks in the past. Last year, Syracuse entered its late bye week coming off of a fifth win with three more opportunities to clinch bowl eligibility. After coming out flat against Louisville, SU proceeded to lose its final two games of the season and finish 5-7.

SU commit LaNorris Sellers scored 9 touchdowns with Dino Babers and Jason Beck watching (PS; Leiker)

LaNorris Sellers, Syracuse football’s only quarterback commit in the 2023 class, played a career game Friday in front of two of his future coaches.

Rather, he played a career first half. The South Florence High School (South Carolina) starter was pulled at halftime when his team led 63-0, a score that would hold through the end of the game.

Sellers completed 15-of-19 passing attempts for 426 yards and eight touchdowns. Three of those scores were on passes of 60 or more yards. The QB’s ninth touchdown came on his feet. Sellers picked up 26 yards on three carries.

Both SU head coach Dino Babers and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck were in attendance for Sellers’ performance, his father told syracuse.com.

Syracuse football's most highly anticipated game this weekend will boost local businesses (cnycentral.com; Scott)

This Saturday #18 Syracuse will take on # 15 North Carolina State in the highest-ranked football matchup here in Syracuse since 1998.

Fans and local businesses are preparing for the highly anticipated game during a special weekend on Syracuse’s campus--family weekend.

Bill Nester, owner of Manny’s said he is looking forward to the game, not only as a business owner but as a Syracuse fan himself.

“It’s much greater than big," said Nester. "It’s huge. This is like the most exciting weekend I’ve seen since like the 1980s.”

Nester says the excitement for this weekend’s game is also helping to boost the store’s sales.

“Business is going to be great," said Nester. "I mean we’re going to have so many people in this store. Some people will probably walk away if they can’t even get in this store. It’s going to be that crowded.”

Syracuse football is off to a hot start with the first 5-0 season in 35 years.

Long time Syracuse fans and natives said this has been a long time coming.

Doeren: Told them at halftime we are going to win this game :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; video)

NC State head coach Dave Doeren speaks to the media after a 19-17 win over FSU.

Orange Watch: Syracuse football to play ‘Game of the Century’ on Saturday - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: When 15th ranked North Carolina State (5-1, 1-1) invades the Dome Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m. ET / ACC Network) to face No. 18 Syracuse (5-0, 2-0), it will mark only the second time since 2000 that both teams will be ranked in the Top 25 polls for a SU home game. That also makes Saturday’s matchup arguably the most important football game played on campus since the Orange throttled Miami 66-13 in the 1998 regular season finale when SU was ranked 21st and Miami 19th.

College football has a legacy of referring to particular games in particular seasons as the ‘Game of the Century,’ due to both teams usually being undefeated and ranked 1st and 2nd in the polls.

In the last 60 years there have been famous meetings such as Michigan State-Notre Dame in 1966, Arkansas-Texas in 1969, Nebraska-Oklahoma in 1971, Miami-Penn State in 1986, Florida State-Notre Dame in 1993, Texas-USC in 2005, Michigan-Ohio State in 2006, and Alabama-LSU in 2011 and 2019 to fit that bill.

The closest Syracuse teams have come to playing a ‘Game’ was the 1960 Cotton Bowl with SU ranked No. 1 against No. 4 Texas, and the 1992 epic in the Dome when top-ranked Miami held off the eighth-ranked Orangemen coming down to the game’s final play.

In fact, since Donovan McNabb’s last game in the 1999 Orange Bowl, there have only been five contests where both Syracuse and its opponent were ranked in the Top 25, and just one game occurred in the Dome, the 2001 season finale when SU (22nd) beat Boston College (25th) 39-28.

The last time both Syracuse and its opponent were ranked in the Top 20 in the Dome was the 1998 season opener in which McNabb and company ranked 17th came up just short against eventual national champion Tennessee, ranked 10th, falling 34-33.

“That’s a long time ago,” Dino Babers accurately stated Monday at his weekly press conference. “That’s a strange statistic, but we’re excited about having the opportunity to play N.C. State.”

Tyler Baker-Williams, Trent Pennix 'close' to returning (247sports.com; Smith)

After being without starters Trent Pennix and Tyler Baker-Williams for the last several weeks, the Wolfpack could get two of its biggest playmakers back on the field in Week 7.

Dave Doeren wouldn't confirm both will be back, but started off by saying Pennix is 'very close' to a return against Syracuse.

"Pennix is close," Doeren said. "He’s either this game [Syracuse] or next, but he’s very close to being back. That’s where we’re at."

That comes after Doeren said last week that Pennix was close to returning and could be back for the Week 7 matchup on the road.

"We miss him. Hopefully we’ll have him back next week or the week after," Doeren said prior to facing Florida State. "He’s probably trending towards next week, but worst case we’ll have him for the rest of the season after the bye. He’s doing really good. He was out there running around today, but he’s not ready for this one. But we miss him. He’s a weapon at that position."

The veteran playmaker for the Wolfpack suffered the injury against East Carolina on Saturday when he was taken down after a catch out of bounds and hit the ground with his shoulder. Pennix was tended to by NC State trainers on the ECU sidelines before walking to the NC State side of the field under his own power.

Syracuse football: What’s college football saying about the Orange after week six? (TNIAAM; Wall)

Each week, we’ll take a look at what other college football media sites are saying about the Syracuse Orange. Did the bye week impact how Syracuse was viewed? Let’s take a look

AP and Coaches Poll

Syracuse is ranked 18th in both the AP and Coaches Poll this week. The Orange moved up four and three spots respectively.

ESPN

In this week’s SP+ rankings Syracuse inch up one to the 57th spot with the offense 61st while the defense ranks 45th. The Orange are ranked between Oregon St and Michigan St. This week’s opponent, the NC State Wolfpack rank 32nd with their offense 71st and defense 12th.

The Football Power Index has Syracuse up three to 32nd between Washington and Iowa State. The FPI continues to predict that the Orange will reach 8 wins with an expected bowl eligibility still at 99.5%. NC State is 26th in FPI this week.

The Orange moves up to 3rd in the weekly ACC rankings in between Wake Forest and NC State.

CBS Sports

In the CBS Sports power rankings Syracuse is up three spots this week and now sits 19th between Kansas and Illinois. NC State is ranked 16th.

The Athletic

The Orange move up two spots this week to 21st in The Athletic’s Top 131 Power Rankings placing them in between this week. which places them between Utah and Illinois. NC State is ranked 18th.

In their ACC Power Rankings, Syracuse is 4th between NC State and Florida State.

Dave Doeren talks injury updates, FSU win, Syracuse and more (247sports.com; Sawyer)

The NC State football team got back into the win column Saturday with a 19-17 win over Florida State, as the Wolfpack’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half to overcome a 17-3 halftime deficit.

Now the Pack has one final game before its bye week, as NC State will head up to New York for a meeting with undefeated Syracuse. The Orange have ACC wins over both Louisville and Virginia to this point, as NC State gets ready for another top-20 matchup.

There are some question marks around injuries for NC State, which lost quarterback Devin Leary during the FSU game. Jack Chambers came in and ran the ball efficiently for the Pack to help beat the Seminoles, but NC State will certainly hope to have its ACC Preseason Player of the Year back sooner rather than later.

FSU football: ACC Power Rankings after week six games (chopchat.com; Hunt)

I had FSU football in the top half of my preseason ACC Power Rankings, and there’s still some truth in that after losing to two of the better teams in the conference. The crazy thing is it was more FSU giving those games away, especially Saturday night against NC State.

Nevertheless, we have some movement within the both divisions as teams won and lost. The overall rankings in the ACC will see some movement as well.

FSU can shake up things is they pull the upset against Clemson before heading into their much-needed second bye week.

NC State will travel to undefeated Syracuse but will likely be without starting QB Devin Leary who got knocked out of the FSU game. That game will have huge implications. North Carolina will travel to play Duke after their big win over Miami.

Here are my updated rankings after six weeks by division and then overall as a conference:

ACC Atlantic

  • Clemson (6-0, 4-0 ACC)
  • Wake Forest (5-1, 1-1 ACC)
  • NC State (5-1, 1-1 ACC)
  • FSU (4-2, 2-2 ACC)
  • Syracuse (5-0, 2-0 ACC)
  • Boston College (2-4, 1-3 ACC)
  • Louisville (3-3, 1-3 ACC)
ACC Coastal
  • North Carolina (5-1, 2-0 ACC)
  • Pittsburgh (4-2, 1-1 ACC)
  • Georgia Tech (3-3, 2-1 ACC)
  • Duke (4-2, 1-1 ACC)
  • Virginia Tech (2-4, 1-2 ACC)
  • Virginia (2-4, 0-3 ACC)
  • Miami (2-3, 0-1 ACC)

Overall Power Rankings

  1. Clemson
  2. Wake Forest
  3. NC State
  4. FSU
  5. Syracuse
  6. North Carolina
  7. Pittsburgh
  8. Georgia Tech
  9. Duke
  10. Louisville
  11. Virginia Tech
  12. Virginia
  13. Boston College
  14. Miami

Parting Thoughts

I couldn’t drop FSU football below Syracuse because Syracuse hasn’t played anyone with a pulse yet, and the Noles gave that game to NC State. NC State leaps FSU with the head-to-head win but I think Wake Forest rolls them.

Miami football projections winning ACC Coastal plummets in ESPN FPI (carnswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The chance for the Miami football team to win the ACC Coastal Division fell from 37.2 percent after week five to 8.7 percent following the week six loss to North Carolina. Miami fell from a 10.2 percent chance to win the ACC after week five to 1.7 following the loss to North Carolina. Miami fell three spots overall in the FPI.

The Hurricanes are now 37th nationally in the FPI. Miami ranks seventh among ACC teams and second in the Coastal Division in the FPI behind North Carolina who moved up five spots to 35th nationally passing Miami with their win over the Hurricanes. The FPI projects Miami to finish the 2022 season with 6.3 wins and 5.8 losses.

Miami is given a 75 percent chance to win six games which would qualify them for a bowl game. This is the second straight season Miami is under .500 in October. Miami began the 2021 season 2-4 before winning five of its final six games to finish 7-5. Miami had to withdraw from the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl due to covid protocol.

Miami is favored in every remaining game this season according to the FPI with the exception of at Clemson on November 19. The Hurricanes are at least given a 60 percent chance to win those games with the exception of Florida State on November 5. The FPI projects Miami with a 51.6 percent chance to defeat Florida State.

Miami (2-3) listed as a 7-point favorite over the 2-4 Hokies for Saturday's 12:30 p.m. kickoff in Blacksburg. It's a sellout crowd and Homecoming for Virginia Tech.
— Manny Navarro (@Manny_Navarro) October 10, 2022

The percentage that Miami is projected to win in each remaining game this season has dropped with the exception of at Virginia on October 29 after the loss to North Carolina. Virginia lost 34-17 to Louisville on Saturday. The Cavaliers are 2-4 overall, 0-3 in the ACC and like Miami has a three-game losing streak.

Miami is given a 78.4 percent chance to win at Virginia Tech on Saturday. Virginia Tech is 2-4 overall, 1-2 in the ACC and also has a three-game losing streak with each loss by at least 16 points. Virginia Tech is 98th nationally in the FPI and last among ACC teams. Miami at Virginia Tech kicks off at 12:30 PM.

Miami has a very winnable schedule in front of them. Clemson who is sixth in the FPI and Florida State who is 24th are the only teams remaining on the Miami football schedule ranked higher than the Hurricanes. With Clemson remaining on the schedule and the loss the North Carolina winning the Coastal Division will be very difficult.

Why are Miami and VT rivals?

It's Miami week at Virginia Tech, and while the Hokies may not have the players to keep up this year, it has been one of the better rivalries in the ACC...

Over the years, Miami and Virginia Tech have developed a bit of a rivalry. It's not a rivalry based on geography; Blacksburg, VA is nowhere near Miami, FL. Rather, it was built on good games played for meaningful stakes. Just look at how many times both teams won at least 9 games during the season (highlighted in lightblue):

Crouse faces bleak financial future if it doesn’t merge with Upstate, consultants predict (PS; $; Mulder)

Crouse Hospital faces a bleak future if it does not merge with its next-door neighbor, SUNY Upstate University Hospital.

The financially distressed hospital’s annual losses could balloon to $45 million by 2026 if it doesn’t tie the knot with Upstate and continues operating on its own.

But if the merger goes through, Crouse’s financial hemorrhaging would stop and it would make a profit of $7.4 million in 2026.

Those predictions, never before made public, are included in documents syracuse.com | The Post-Standard obtained from the state. The forecasts, made by financial consultants hired by the hospitals, are included in documents Upstate and Crouse submitted to regulators to convince them the merger is necessary.

We're #14, above Coastal Carolina and below James Madison.
Here is James Madison's schedule:

Props to the Sunbelt Conference, which has had a nice season overall. But I think we have done more to date and have a lot more depth and overall talent.
