Welcome to Random Message Board Bump Day (Cali Day)

Chris Charles Matalas (August 2, 1945 - October 5, 2016), aka CaliCuse, was a long time member of the board. He was known for his extremely enthusiastic, positive outlook on live and Syracuse athletics and became a beloved fixture on the syracusefan.com web site.

One of his favorite things to do was to find a thread that had been dormant for years, and bump it. This sometimes caused confusion, irritation and often amusement among the rest of the board.

For your great enthusiasm and positive outlook, this day is for you Cali.

If you want to celebrate, find an old Cali post and bump it today. RIP Cali, you are gone now but we will never forget you...

3 Syracuse football commits react to coaching changes - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

In the past week, Syracuse football lost both of its coordinators from the 2022 season.

Offensive coordinator Robert Anae is headed to NC State for the same position with Dave Doeren’s staff, and defensive coordinator Tony White is on his way to Nebraska to take the same job under new head coach Matt Rhule.

Syracuse moved immediately on the offensive side of the ball, naming quarterbacks coach Jason Beck the new offensive coordinator. He was previously OC at Simon Fraser for a season in 2012. He then joined Robert Anae for the last 10 seasons at BYU, Virginia and Syracuse.

Meanwhile, passing game coordinator Nick Monroe will be SU’s interim defensive coordinator during the Pinstripe Bowl against Minnesota. He’s served under head coach Dino Babers since 2014 at Bowling Green.

The Juice Online spoke with three commitments in the 2023 class—tight end David Clement, linebacker Zyian Moultrie-Goddard, and EDGE Jalil Smith—about how the coaching changes affected their commitments.

So far, the answer is not at all:

Spoke to @GoddardZyian who told us the coaching change doesn’t change his commitment to Syracuse. “Yes I’m still staying at Cuse,” he said.
— SUJuice.com (@TheJuiceOnline) December 9, 2022

Just spoke with 2023 commit Jalil Smith (@iamfutureja_). He said he is “still sticking with the Orange,” despite the coaching change.

If anything, recruiting momentum has accelerated despite the departure of the two coaches.

Over the weekend, Syracuse received two commitments from a pair of offensive linemen in Vincent Carroll-Jackson, a three-star lineman from Central Daulphin (PA) East, and Joe More, a graduate transfer from Richmond with one year of eligibility remaining.

QB LaNorris Sellers is committed to Syracuse, which is battling South Carolina to keep him (247sports.com; $; Dohn)

LaNorris Sellers has a busy week, but there are no in-home visits set up and he will not be taking any trips prior to signing Dec. 21.

Where the Florence (S.C.) South Florence quarterback signs, though, is what he has to figure out while also prepping to play in Saturday's Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

The 6-foot-2 1/2, 217-pound Sellers is committed to Syracuse, but in-state South Carolina is making a strong push to flip him.

"I am really thinking about doing what is best for me," Sellers said. "When I am doing something else, just not worry about all the outside noises. I wouldn't say it is stressful, but it's a business decision. It's college, a new step in life, so you want to be comfortable."

Alabama Transfer Defensive Lineman Braylen Ingraham Commits to Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has made its a big splash in the transfer portal this offseason and it is at a critical position of need. Alabama defensive tackle transfer Braylen Ingraham has committed to the Orange, he announced on Monday. He has two years of eligibility remaining. Ingraham spent four seasons with the Crimson Tide, appearing in two games in 2019 and 2020. The 6-4, 298 pounder is a former high school teammate of former Syracuse defensive linemen KJ Ruff and McKinley Williams. Ingraham will provide immediate size, athleticism and depth in the middle of Syracuse's defensive line.

Injuries prevented him from becoming a consistent contributor and he was medically retired prior to the 2022 season. Therefore, he entered the portal looking to continue his collegiate career. The Orange pursued and hosted him on a visit the weekend of the Florida State game. Other schools involved included Indiana, Memphis, Florida Atlantic and Florida International.

Ingraham was a highly coveted defensive line prospect in the 2019 recruiting class. He was rated a four star recruit and top 200 prospect by various recruiting services. He signed with Alabama out of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida. Ingraham picked the Crimson Tide over offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa State, Louisville, LSU, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin among others.

SU wide receiver commit Bryce Cohoon earns postseason player of the year award (PS; Leiker)

Syracuse football commit Bryce Cohoon was named the Wichita Large School Postseason Player of the Year.

The class of 2023 wide receiver plays for Maize High School, the Kansas 5A state runner-up. The Eagles lost the state championship 28-14, their first loss of the season.

Cohoon had 37 receptions for 844 yards and eight touchdowns for Maize this year.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound multi-sport athlete committed to the Orange in June following an official visit. He’s the only wide receiver pledged to SU’s class of 2023.

Syracuse has 11 verbal commits in its upcoming signing class so far, adding defensive lineman Vincent Carroll-Jackson on Sunday. Early signing day is Dec. 21.

SU safeties coach Nick Monroe will serve as interim defensive coordinator for Pinstripe Bowl (PS; Leiker)

Syracuse football safeties coach and defensive pass game coordinator Nick Monroe has received a promotion, at least temporarily.

Monroe will serve as the Orange’s interim defensive coordinator following Tony White’s departure Thursday.

There was no press release announcing Monroe’s interim role. His title was changed on the SU athletics website.

Both White and offensive coordinator Robert Anae departed the program last week in moves that seemingly stunned players. White will join Matt Rhule’s new Big Ten staff at Nebraska, and Anae is will make a jump within the ACC to N.C. State.

Monroe was the obvious candidate to take over leading The Mob, at least for the next month. He’s been working with head coach Dino Babers since 2015 back when both were at Bowling Green, and is likely a candidate to take over the SU defensive coordinator role permanently.

Syracuse football: Orange add two more commits to 2023 class (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange football program picked up two new commitments over the weekend.

As the Orange continue to look to replace three starters on the offensive line they added graduate transfer Joe More from the Richmond Spiders and 2023 OL/DL recruit Vincent Caroll-Jackson out of Pennsylvania.

The 6’5 More is originally from Franklin, TN and he has been a full-time starter for the Spiders the last three seasons. He said that Syracuse is looking at him to play tackle which makes sense as the Orange lose both Matthew Bergeron and Dakota Davis.

— Nolove78 (@Joe78More) December 11, 2022

Caroll-Jackson is a three-star player from Harrisburg, PA. The 6’5 280 lb lineman just finished his first year of organized football and he committed to Syracuse over offers from Georgia, Florida, Pitt and Rutgers. He’s listed as OL by On3 and a DL by 247 and Rivals. We’ll have to wait and see which side of the ball he slots in on when he gets to Syracuse.

Alabama's Braylen Ingraham commits to SU, freshman Jeremiah Wilson enters portal (DO; Alandt)

Former Alabama defensive lineman Braylen Ingraham announced his commitment to Syracuse Monday afternoon. The redshirt junior, who entered the transfer portal on Sept. 22, was not with the Crimson Tide this fall and did not see any game action in 2021. He appeared in two games in both 2019 and 2020, finishing his three seasons at Alabama with five total tackles.

Ingraham was originally a four-star recruit from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who chose the Crimson Tide over 26 other offers. He was the No. 11 strongside defensive end out of the 2019 class and the No. 19 overall athlete in Florida. Ingraham, who adds experience to a unit that saw key injuries and whose inexperience was tested throughout the season, was most recently listed at 6-foot-4 and 298 lbs. He becomes the fourth four-star recruit on SU’s roster and will look to slide into Steve Linton’s role, who entered the transfer portal last week.

Monday morning, SU freshman corner Jeremiah Wilson announced that he intends to enter the transfer portal, making him the third 2022 contributor for the Orange to enter the portal. Courtney Jackson and Linton already announced their decisions. The true freshman played 158 snaps at corner in his sole season with SU, garnering 20 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one pass break up. He was graded out by Pro Football Focus at 63.3%.

He got time in place of Garrett Williams, who went down midway through the season with a torn ACL and might have slid in alongside Isaiah Johnson at cornerback. The Orange now have seven former players in the transfer portal, with Wilson being the first to transfer since both offensive coordinator Robert Anae and defensive coordinator Tony White took the same jobs at different schools.

Syracuse Football: 5-star quarterback with Orange offer discloses his top 8 (itlh; Adler)

Elite 2024 quarterback Michael Van Buren from Baltimore, who is rated five stars by ESPN and holds a Syracuse football scholarship offer, has released his top eight, according to numerous media reports.

An article from national analyst Adam Friedman does note that Van Buren is leaving his recruitment open, but at least for now anyway, his top eight consists of Penn State, Cincinnati, Miami, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Maryland, Oregon and Oklahoma.

A ‘chicken and bourbon’ joint’ is coming to the former Empire Brewing space in Armory Square (PS; Cazentre)

A locally owned, Nashville-inspired “fried chicken and bourbon joint” plans to open in the spring in a long-vacant and prominent restaurant space in Armory Square.

But first, its owners this month will open a new cocktail bar around the block. And that’s on top of the craft beer/burger/poutine place they’ve operated in the adjacent building since 2018.

“We started off with a place that’s beer-centered, but now we’re expanding the idea into other areas and concepts,” said Cheryl Chaif, the primary owner of all three enterprises, including the existing restaurant/bar, The Hops Spot, at 116 Walton St.

The Tallman Cocktail Co. is due to open later this month at 219 W. Fayette, on the opposite (or back) end of the same building (the Tallman Block) that houses The Hops Spot. It will feature an extensive mixed drinks list, plus some wine and beer, and an array of finger foods and small bites.

In the spring, Chaif plans to open The Whiskey Coop, the chicken and bourbon place, at 120 Walton St. That’s the basement-level space, formerly occupied by Empire Brewing Co., that is next door to The Hops Spot. It will feature fried chicken, various chicken sandwiches and burgers, plus a drinks list highlighted by more than 100 different whiskeys.
