Welcome to Monkey Day!

Monkey Day celebrates not only monkeys, but all simians, which include New World monkeys, Old World Monkeys, and apes. The day exists to bring awareness to the animals, and to show love and care for them. It was created by artists Casey Sorrow and Eric Millikin, when they were art students at Michigan State University in 2000. At first the day was celebrated by students at MSU, but it eventually gained a wider following after its creators' artwork and alternative comics, which featured Monkey Day, were published online and at exhibits. Today it is celebrated all around the world.

Syracuse considering Rocky Long, creator of 3-3-5 system, for defensive coordinator (report) (PS; Leiker)

Rocky Long, the creator of the 3-3-5 defensive scheme has reportedly emerged as a candidate for Syracuse football’s defensive coordinator.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Long is a target for the job. He’d replace Tony White, one of his former players and assistant coaches, who departed for Nebraska on Thursday.

During the 2020 hiring cycle, when SU first brought on Zach Arnett and then White as DC, Long met with Syracuse head coach Dino Babers to discuss the position. There is a gray area as to whether he was an actual candidate for the job or not.

Orange safeties coach and defensive passing game coordinator Nick Monroe is currently serving as the program’s interim defensive coordinator.

Long, 72, is the defensive coordinator at New Mexico. He’s been with the Lobos since 2020, serving under head coach Danny Gonzales, one of his former players.

A veteran of college football coaching, Long has served in a variety of positions at several schools in his career, mostly in the western half of the United States. He has been a head coach twice — at New Mexico (1999-2008) and San Diego State (2011-19) — and a defensive coordinator five times.

Syracuse football: DL Braylen Ingraham transfers to Orange from Alabama (TNIAAM; De Guzman)

The Syracuse Orange football program is taking a page out of the men’s soccer program and using the transfer portal to build up the team. Dino Babers picked up a notable transfer for the trenches on Monday night. Former four-star recruit Braylen Ingraham is joining Syracuse from Alabama.

I’m thankful for another opportunity #GoOrange @CuseFootball @CoachNJ_Monroe @CoachBabersCuse pic.twitter.com/ALQu5b3fc8
— Braylen Ingraham (@BIngraham5) December 12, 2022

Ingraham entered the portal back in September after not appearing on Alabama’s roster to start the 2022 season. He only appeared in four games and for 26 snaps over three season for the Crimson Tide. Ingraham told The Tuscaloosa News that he medically retired from Alabama, leading to his decision to enter the portal.

Ingraham’s credentials jump out on paper. He was a consensus four-star recruit coming out of St. Thomas Aquinas, a notable football high school in Florida. The 6-foot-4, 291 pound defensive lineman didn’t initially receive an offer from Syracuse when he was coming out of high school.

Nebraska Transfer DB Jaeden Gould Commits to Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has landed its third player from the transfer portal in Nebraska transfer defensive back Jaeden Gould, he announced on Tuesday. Gould took an official visit to get a closer look at the Orange over the weekend. He joins offensive lineman Joe More (Richmond) and defensive tackle Braylen Ingraham (Alabama) as incoming transfers for the 2023 season. Gould has four years of eligibility remaining.

UCLA, Maryland and Rutgers were among those interested in Gould, a former elite recruit out of Bergen Catholic in New Jersey. The 6-2 defensive back was named to the 2022 SI-99 as one of the best 99 prospects in the class. Gould picked the Cornhuskers over Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, USC, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin, among many others, in the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Syracuse football 2023 recruiting: Here’s where SU’s class stands a week before early signing day (PS; $; Leiker)

Early signing day is just one week away for Division I football.

On Dec. 21, Syracuse football is set to sign at least 11 verbally committed high school and junior college recruits to its 2023 class.

The early signing period lasts three days. Recruits have another opportunity to sign during the regular signing period that begins on National Signing Day on Feb. 1 and runs until April 1.

The Orange has also picked up three players so far out of the transfer portal, which opened on Dec. 5 and will remain open through Jan. 19.

SU’s class ranks No. 82 in the country and No. 14 in the ACC according to 247Sports.

Syracuse Football’s Losses and Gains Begin – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Ezeir)

It was a forgone conclusion that a bevy of transfer portal news would spring after Robert Anae and Tony White left Syracuse last week. Well, a domino on both sides just fell. SU landed Nebraska transfer Jaeden Gould earlier today, adding its third transfer to next year’s squad. The timing was just right on the defensive back, who still has four years of eligibility. Just hours later, former freshman All-American Duce Chestnut announced his decision to enter the transfer portal after two years with the program.

For those this as a player for player trade scenario, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Gould originally committed to USC before flipping his allegiance to Nebraska as a 6’2, 200-pound two star. Chestnut showed up in Central New York as a four-star and a top 25 cornerback in his class. Both are New Jersey natives but the former SU star corner is by far the more experienced player.

From day one, Chestnut received the nod and shined against opposing star wideouts. The 6’0″ defensive back earned third team All-ACC honors and was named an All-American by three different outlets. Chestnut recorded the second-most passes defended in the conference while simultaneously leading the Orange with three interceptions. But his most impressive feat surrounded the fact that the now-sophomore became just the third ‘Cuse true freshman defensive back and first cornerback in the last 40 years to earn a week 1 starting job out of camp, joining Andre Cisco (2018) and Markus Paul (1985), who were both selected in the first four rounds of the NFL Draft.

SU football starting CB Duce Chestnut has entered the transfer portal (PS; Axe)

One of the brightest stars on the Syracuse football defense has decided to play elsewhere in 2023.

Orange starting cornerback Darian “Duce” Chestnut has entered the transfer portal

Chestnut had 83 tackles and four interceptions over two seasons at Syracuse and paired with Garrett Williams to form what was regarded as one of the better cornerback duos in the ACC.

Chestnut was named Third Team All-ACC as a freshman in 2021. He was honorable mention on the All-ACC team this past season.

Official confirmation has not come on this but with Williams seemingly set to move on and declare for the NFL Draft, the Orange will be without its 2022 starting cornerbacks next season.

ESPN reporter predicts Pinstripe Bowl win for Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

In August, we chatted with ESPN.com national college football reporter Andrea Adelson on The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by SNY.tv, and we asked her if Syracuse was heading to a bowl game.

She paused for a moment before she made her prediction. “I’m going to say 6-6, bowl game.”

Adelson was one of the few national writers who predicted the Orange heading to the 2022 postseason at the time. And it’s easy to see why.

Syracuse was coming off its third straight losing season and was facing a gauntlet of a schedule. In the preseason, the Orange had a stretch of seven games where six of its opponents were ranked.

But SU started the season strong, routing Louisville, 30-7, in its opening game. That was the first of six straight wins for Syracuse that vaulted them into the rankings, where they ultimately topped out as the No. 14 team in the country.

While the Orange tapered off, and ended the season 7-5, it still fulfilled Adelson’s preseason prediction.

“It certainly something to build off of,” Adelson said of SU’s bowl appearance. “Making it to this point is great in terms of momentum and looking forward to the future.”

Adelson also said that while losing White to Nebraska was a big blow to the Orange, the loss of Anae to NC State wasn’t as significant with the promotion of quarterbacks coach Jason Beck to be the new offensive coordinator.

“Promoting someone who works well with Garrett Shrader,” Adelson said, “who can utilize his strengths, while also going back to the principals with the run game, is very positive for Syracuse moving forward.”

Another positive step would be ending the season on a winning note. Syracuse will face Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl, SU’s third appearance in that bowl. The Orange won in 2010 and 2012, and Adelson believes they will take home a third trophy.

“I’m going to with Syracuse to put a cherry on top of a good season,” Adelson said.

All 41 college bowl games picked: How Air Force and Syracuse will help you win your office pool (desertsun.com; Powers)

Well, it's college football bowl season. Your office is having a pool and you're staring at the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl between Western Kentucky and South Alabama.

Let's see, you did go on the three-day party houseboat trip in Kentucky that one time, so you pick Western Kentucky.

Well, guess what. You're wrong. And furthermore, those days are over, because it's time once again for my still-unpatented "Quality Games" bowl-picking system. Eight years ago, I wanted to come up with a system that would take my stupid head and my gullible heart out of my bowl game picks.

How do you compare teams you haven't seen play, and who don't have common opponents? Yes there are games like Georgia Southern vs. Buffalo, but even games pitting big-conference schools like Iowa vs. Kentucky are almost impossible to pick.

Without my "Quality Games" system, I wouldn't have any clue who to pick. Here's how it works. I look at every game a team played this year and assign it a point total. Add up the 11 or 12 games the team played and that is their "Quality Games" score. The team in each matchup with the highest QG score is the pick.

And wins and losses aren't the only determining factor. A close loss to a ranked team is considered better than a narrow win over an unranked team. In baseball terms, it's like looking at a team's ERA, not their win-loss record. Put simply, how often does the team play a quality game when they step on the field?

So with that as the backdrop, I've run the numbers on all 41 games (82 teams, yikes). Here are the important findings followed by the pick for every game.

We look back at our 2022-2023 college football preseason predictions for the ACC and see how we did.

Former UNC DB set to visit ACC rival among other schools (usatoday.com; Pearson)

The North Carolina Tar Heels football program may see former defensive back Tony Grimes next season.

Just a week after he announced that he was entering the transfer portal, Grimes is taking visits as well as scheduling some. And one of those visits is to Virginia Tech.

Grimes’ dad posted on Twitter that the former five-star recruit is heading to Blacksburg to visit the Hokies as he seeks a new team. The defensive back already visited Texas A&M per his Twitter and more are on the way.

Next up is the Hokies, and if they can land a commitment from the in-state defensive back, it will hurt UNC fans a little bit.

He’s also set to visit USC sometime before making his decision.

Grimes hasn’t released an official list of teams he’s down to just yet but after a visit to Virginia Tech on Wednesday, one could be looming soon.

Cade's Time: QB Klubnik prepares to start Orange Bowl (lancestoronline.com; AP; Iacobelli)

Cade Klubnik looked poised and confident in his new role as the No. 1 quarterback at Clemson. The only difference is he didn't have experienced teammate DJ Uiagalelei alongside to help guide him.

Klubnik took control of the offense — for good this time, after Uiagalelei entered the NCAA transfer portal last week — as the 10th-ranked Tigers continued postseason preparations for their Orange Bowl game against No. 6 Tennessee on Dec. 30.

The game marks Klubnik's first college start after a season mostly on the sidelines behind Uiagalelei, Clemson's often criticized two-year starter.

Klubnik, who came on in relief in a 39-10 win over North Carolina in the ACC Championship game, has had “a front-row seat to the good and the bad of what it's like to play quarterback at this level,” Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Tuesday.

Klubnik was among the country's top quarterback prospects when he signed at Clemson. Many supporters were looking to replace Uiagalelei, who fought through injuries and poor play as the Tigers' streak of six consecutive ACC titles and College Football Playoff appearances ended with a 10-3 season in 2021.

But it was Uiagalelei, a junior, who led Clemson to a 7-0 start and a projected playoff spot.

That's when things went off the rails for the Tigers' offense. Klubnik came off the bench for an ineffective Uiagalelei to spark a 27-21 victory over then-ranked Syracuse on Oct. 22.

Heisman's Blue Blood Bias (RX; HM)

Heisman's Blue Blood Bias

The Heisman Trophy might be the most blue-blood-biasedthing in College Football (and that's saying a lot!)

✌️ @uscfb now stands alone at the with EIGHT Heisman Trophy winners

Which school is the most surprising? pic.twitter.com/7AZkS5AYGN
— FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) December 12, 2022

Blue Bloods

Of the 88 Heisman Trophy winners, 43 of them (nearly half!) went to one of just 9 "Blue Blood" schools:
USC (8 winners)
Notre Dame (7)
Ohio State (7)
Oklahoma (7)
Alabama (4)
Michigan (3)
Nebraska (3)
Georgia (2)
Texas (2)
Total: 43
In fact, 29 (32.9%) of all Heisman Trophies went to players from just 4 schools!

Non-P5 Schools

Of the remaining 45 winners, 12 of them went to non-P5 schools:
Army (3)
Navy (2)
Yale (2)
BYU*, Chicago, Houston*, Princeton, and SMU (1 each)
Total: 12
* Yes, I know BYU and Houston are set to join the Big XII very soon... but when the trophies were won, they are not among today's elite conferences.

SEC Schools

The next biggest group is SEC teams not named Alabama or Georgia:
Auburn (3)
Florida (3)
LSU (2)
Texas A&M (2)
S. Carolina (1)
Sub-Total: 11
Of course, with Alabama and Georgia, the true SEC total is 16.

ACC Schools

Next is the conference we know and love...
Florida State (3)
Miami (2)
Boston College (1)
Louisville (1)
Pitt (1)
Syracuse (1)
Total: 9
If we were to include Notre Dame's winners with the ACC, we also have 16.

Clemson football junior Myles Murphy opts out of Orange Bowl, will turn pro (yahoo.com; Shanesy)

Clemson football junior defensive end Myles Murphy will turn pro and not play in the Orange Bowl.

Murphy, a first-team All-ACC selection and projected first-round NFL draft pick, is the Tigers' first healthy player to skip a bowl game under coach Dabo Swinney.

Murphy won't be with Clemson (11-2) against Tennessee (11-2) in the Dec. 30 Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami (8 p.m., ESPN).

PORTAL PONDERING: Clemson football transfer portal losses not expected to have major impact for Dabo Swinney

"Not surprised," Swinney said Tuesday. "He's a great player and I think will be a pretty high draft pick. I think he's going to test well and work out well and all those things and be a great player for a long time."

Murphy played in all 13 games this season, with 11 starts and has 43 tackles and four pass break-ups.

"He contemplated things," Swinney said, "whether or not he was going to come back or go pro and then whether or not to play in the game. All those things weighed heavily on him. He didn't make the decision on a whim. That's not who he is."

OFFSIDE REMARKS: Syracuse men: They've come a long way in 50 years - Front Row Soccer (frontrowsoccer.com; Lewis)

On Monday night, the Syracuse University men won their first College Cup, defeating eight-time champion Indiana University in a shootout.

Some five decades ago, I covered the SU varsity team, two years after it was playing at the club level – for the Daily Orange, the student newspaper.

I was a junior at Syracuse after transferring from Nassau Community College, where I wrote about Bruce Arena (future U.S. men’s national team and MLS coach) and Bob Montgomery (future Adelphi University coach and Red Bulls Academy director).

Football was the big fall beat and game coverage was passed around from writer to writer.

So, wanting to just write and improve, I wound up covering the soccer team and did some cross country articles for the paper as well.

And that was back in the stone age. We wrote our stories on typewriters (kids, ask your grandparents what they were). There were no computers and no internet. Cell phones? Ha! If you had a phone in your room, that was a big deal.

Stone age, indeed.

My first game was on Sept. 26, 1972.

To my horror when I reached the field near Manley Field House, there was no one on the field, only coach John Allen, a graduate student, searching in the adjacent brush, trying to find a soccer ball that was booted out of play.

It seemed kickoff time for the game was moved from 2 p.m. to 10:30 a.m. because Colgate, the visiting squad, had a typing error in its schedule. Many soccer fans showed up at the field at around 2 p.m. and left frustrated because of the re-scheduling.

I had arrived just after the game was over, but fortunately, Allen was there to help me build a story.

This was the first few paragraphs:

Not all was lost.

The Syracuse soccer team had just been beaten, 3-2, by a late Colgate goal in the second half. On top of that the team had also lost a seventeen-dollar soccer ball in the brush around the field.

From this, one would think the squad to be downcast, at least spiritually and economically, but they weren’t. Colgate happens to be one of the top-rated soccer teams in central New York. To play them even is a thing in itself.
